Have you ever had a Newcastle Brown?
My first time in London the couple I was staying with and I met a friend of theirs for a lunch of meat pies and mash in West Ham.  When in Rome.   Stayed on after in the pie shop playing bumper pool and got rocked on Brown by like 3pm.  Then went home and ordered pizza, which came with a six pack.  Then went bar hopping in Piccadilly and they finally left me at a club (with an address for the cabbie stuffed in my front shirt pocket) while I danced until closing with a lovely lady from Norwich who had been poured into her dress.  She rebuffed my Anglo-American Unification Plan, so I made it home just in time to meet the gent of the house getting up to watch the Australian Grand Prix.  After the race, I went to bed until like 3:30pm local time, which, since it was November, meant it was basically dark.  Waking up after dark completely horked my internal clock for the rest of the trip.

It was a very memorable day.  But the thing I remember most is the Newcastle Brown.  I can't even stand the smell of it now.

And already the United click baiters have Newcastle rumored as buying Martial, Lingard, VdB and Phil Jones.

(please let the Phil Jones rumors be true)

#### me. Just when I thought Spurs season could not get worse, hearing 2 players have tested positive for Covid and will likely miss the next 3 games.

unconfirmed reports that the two players are Son and Bryan Gil.

At emergency meeting of Premier League today there was an 18-2 vote to ban related party transactions (sponsors related to team owners) for a month while permanent rule changed discussed. Newcastle and Man City (who’ve always claimed Abu Dhabi deals are market value) opposed.

From SBJ

Sources: Euros heading to Fox Sports through 2028, EPL TV deal in play, MLS coming shortly after EPL is settled

Fox Sports is close to taking the UEFA European Championship rights from ESPN, according to several sources. Nothing has been signed officially yet, but sources expect a deal for U.S. rights to be announced within the next two weeks. ESPN has held these rights since 2008 and has built up the Euros into a jewel event. Deal terms still are being negotiated, but sources say that Fox will have the rights through 2028, which would include Euro 2024 and Euro 2028, in addition to the UEFA Nations League and European qualifiers.

The price Fox is paying for the package is not known. ESPN paid around $115 million for the package that included just Euro 2020. UEFA was believed to be looking for around $300 million to cover the next two iterations of the event.

The deal marks a big win for Fox, as the Euros fit the media company’s soccer strategy, which is more focused on big events with national teams rather than individual clubs. Fox boasts an enviable schedule over the next four years, which includes the FIFA World Cup next year, the Women’s World Cup in 2023, the Euro 2024 and the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2025. It also holds the rights to the South America's Copa America.

CBS, ESPN and NBC were involved in the negotiations at one point or another. These media companies have been active in picking up soccer rights, part of a strategy by each to bolster the direct-to-consumer component for their respective streaming services: Paramount+, ESPN+ and Peacock.

CBS, ESPN and Fox are expected to join NBC in submitting formal bids for the Premier League’s U.S. media rights next month, according to several sources. NBC’s current deal ends in May. The league has told interested companies to submit bids by Nov. 8. The Premier League has said that it will consider bids that split the rights between two media companies, a big change from how it has previously marketed its U.S. rights, which to date has only been held by one network.

Opportunities still exist for one company to pick up the rights. But other properties, like the NHL recently, have opted to split packages among two or more networks to take advantage of having big media companies help promote their sport.

Given the posturing among all the networks, it’s impossible to accurately predict how much the league stands to make from a new deal. NBC currently pays more than $150 million per season as part of a six-year deal signed in 2015. Considering the amount of interest, that fee is likely to double -- and possibly go higher. NBC Sports wants to remain the sole U.S. rights holder for Premier League, which has been a big driver of its Peacock streaming service.

When asked about the Premier League at last week’s CAA World Congress of Sports, ESPN’s Jimmy Pitaro said, “We love the game of soccer. We love it on linear, but probably love it even more for direct-to-consumer. Absolutely we are interested in more soccer content and we are looking at it right now.”

The frenzy around the Premier League has affected MLS, which also is in the market looking for new media deals. Sources said that media companies told MLS execs that they wanted to wait until after the Premier League’s bidding process ended before getting serious with negotiations around the domestic league’s rights.

They better not split it. I try not to complain about the current mess we have, but if they split the EPL between two or more streaming providers, I’m going to flip to Serie B or some league from South America.

Its awesome and unbelievable someone’s going to pay $2bln for this next EPL US rights contract.

An outright ban seems dumb to me. I don’t think it’s that hard to value these deals to keep them at FMV. That’s what FIFA does for FFP break even analysis and it’s done all the time for tax purposes.  Also, I’d think more than just City and Newcastle would have a problem with this. LCFC and King Power comes to mind and I’m sure there are others.

I think its also a bit of a red herring.  How hard would it be for the Saudi Royal family to encourage a non-related business to sponsor Newcastle (or the stadium) at a "fair" price?

I don't know what they can do, realistically - FMV is such a nebulous term.  Hard to argue one way or the other about what marketing in a global league like the EPL would be worth in various countries.

LOL at Bruce admitting it got to him when fans called him a “tactically inept cabbage head.”
“By the time I got to Newcastle, I thought I could handle everything thrown at me but it has been very, very tough,' he added. 'To never really be wanted, to feel that people wanted me to fail, to read people constantly saying I would fail, that I was useless, a fat waste of space, a stupid, tactically inept cabbage head or whatever. And it was from day one.” - Steve Bruce

He was in an impossible situation. Totally over his head but with zero help from the owner to disguise it and a fanbase that was just completely fed up. A perfect storm.

I seriously wonder how many BOATLOADS of money are being thrown at Infantino by the Qatar's of the world.  If you don't have any of UEFA on board save maybe Russia, what are you left with?  https://apnews.com/article/soccer-sports-2020-tokyo-olympics-world-cup-gianni-infantino-852c9b3684c356a427985173752ad5d0
it gets more dumb by the minute.

FIFA to explore proposal that teams can't play in consecutive World Cups if the event is held every 2 years

Radio guys talking about how the last game was Bruce's 1,000th and maybe that was why it was delayed?
That's speculation, yeah. I think the takeover just got approved so suddenly that it's taking a little time to get everything ready. I suppose it's a nice thought that they gave him a chance to get his 1000th but they're in a regulation scrap - can't be getting all sentimental.

Seriously.  Every 4 years is perfect.  FIFA needs to push for and promote the other federations to match their tournies with the Euros.  Want to keep interest?  Make the Gold Cup and Copa Libertadores and all the other ones go every 4 at the same time as the Euros.  Promote them.  Don't kill them for a watered down world cup, esp one that may not have big teams because they have to skip after playing the last one.

:goodposting:

But you would also think they would have had a plan beyond "Hey we bought Newcastle, now what?"  Now they have an interim Manager (not even a caretaker manager) and still no plan for who's taking over long term.

They'll have a caretaker before the Palace match I think. My guess is they wanted to stick with Bruce until they nailed down the caretaker prior to the January window, but they (and Bruce) just saw how untenable the situation really was after the Spurs game and mutually decided he had to go immediately.

I think they wanted to sack Bruce immediately - but realized he was sitting on his 1000th appearance...

once that was done, then they could at least remove him.

[Jaime Ojeda] Another win for the New England Revolution this year in #MLS. The team reaches the figure of 69 points already. How wild. #NERevs have a winning rhythm that projects them to reach 75.7 points this year, breaking the LAFC record (72) achieved in 2019. 3 games to go.

Romano reporting Newcastle in advanced talks with Former Roma Man Paul Fonseca. Fonseca has interest in managing in the Premier and wants at least 3yrs

There's a decent article in the Athletic from earlier this week regarding this meeting, which they are describing using terms like "astonishing."  A (soon to be former) Newcastle executive opened the meeting by reading a statement threatening all the other clubs as well as their executives with legal liability if the measures were passed.  That didn't go over very well.

This will be a PL rule, right?  (Or is this an FA rule?)

It won't apply to Newcastle next season, so I don't see why they care about it...

No surprise he's at Lazio given their Ultras are a bunch of Fascist and Nazi Sympathizers

Man Utd. First step has to be the final decision on Solskjær by the board. Internal talks still ongoing over how to handle the crisis. #MUFC

Antonio Conte would be prepared to talk with Man Utd about project, as revealed today - but there’s been still no official contact yet.

Conte probably makes the most sense, but I think it would cost Man United plenty in the transfer market.  I don't think they have the players to play Conte's style.

Doesn't he have some history with Cristiano?  I thought I read something from when they were both in Italy a couple years ago.
