Newcastle announce Nick Pope. 10 million or so, should push if not overtake Dubravka. Makes it easier to unload Darlow. Went from rumor to fact in about 3 days, perhaps a testament to Dan Ashworth keeping the actual business under wraps. Solid signing.

NICK POPE IS A gosh darn ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL!!!

Dubravka is a decent GK but Nick Pope is probably an upgrade. Darlow is Dubravka’s backup but is kinda bad, but not bad enough they can’t get something for him. Dan Ashworth is Newcastle’s new Sporting Director they hired away from Brighton - was successful in building them up and is given a lot of credit for strengthening the England national team’s youth development. Most of the crazy rumors and leaks have more or less stopped since he officially came on board.

The new owners have shown to be prudent and faithful to their word so far. They’re not interested (and most Newcastle fans aren’t, either) in signing gigantic names just for the sake of it. They really seem to be focused on the entire infrastructure (including the women’s team) while slowly building a stronger EPL side. It’s fun to obsessively monitor their progress instead of working, that’s for sure.

Ajax win 'the Oscar for creativity' in Cannes. They melted down their Eredivisie 20/21 trophy to make more than 40,000 championship stars which were sent to all season ticket holders

tl;dr- something about Newcastle?

I woke up to my silly season news feed telling me Neymar is a Chelsea target? or maybe Man U or Barca? who the hell can afford him?

and if so (to chels), it would be good to hear some news about CP. feels like it's been a bit quiet lately.

Saw something saying Neymar is only 45M and why won't United go in for him at that price?

United gets linked to everyone.  I think there are still writers saying Snjeider is on his way.  Is it like that for all clubs?

Looks pretty certain that Newcastle will finally land Sven Botman. I’m not going to pretend I heard of this guy before January, but he’s very well regarded and young. Eddie Howe is known as an offensive-minded manager but he now has:

                                 Pope

          Trippier  Botman Burn Targett

That’s not bad! We get a RW and we can possibly push for the Conference League and I’d treasure it.

USMNT Only@usmntonly

13 years ago today, the USMNT shocked the world with a 2-0 win against European Champions Spain in the Confederations Cup semis with goals from Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore.

Spain started Casillas, Ramos, Pique, Puyol, Fabregas, Alonso, Xavi, Villa and Torres in that match.

This could go in a bunch of different soccer threads....

Even if he likely won't make it through an MLS season, a free transfer and a TAM level deal makes this almost impossible to turn down.   There has to be something else here though.  I can't imagine Bale playing on only a TAM level salary...Not that it is bad mind you at $2.8m but I would have expected Bale could have commanded more

LAFC is close to a deal to bring Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale to Major League Soccer, sources have told ESPN.

The blockbuster move would be a free transfer as Bale's contract is up with Real Madrid and is expected to be completed using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM), as first reported by MLSSoccer.com, leaving the club with an open Designated Player slot.

Looks like it's about time to unroll LAFCAM, the league's newest salary currency.

Taylor Twellman@TaylorTwellman
🚨🚨🚨
Carlos Vela has resigned with @LAFC  as a DP until the end of '23. Bale & Chiellini are TAM players. Any questions with how Thorrington is operating under the salary cap???? WOW. #LAFC #MLS

The magic seems to be hiding behind how LAFC are getting these big name players on TAM deals ($2.8m max).   That seems fishy to say the least but LA Galaxy did the same with Zlatan as well (at least in the beginning).   They have to be offering other incentives...

Newcastle got hosed here. Milan and Lille had an agreement in January and Botman gave his word to Milan. When Lille heard Newcastle was interested they pulled the plug on him and Sanchez to Milan stating they wanted to keep players till summer do to CCL comp. L'Equipe came out with an article accusing Lille doing favorable business with Milan about 2 or so months ago since Elliot who use to own Milan had owned Lille at one point. But nothing was ever proven Lille's Technical director is also in a disagreement with the newer ownership Lille went from winning the league to 1Oth in the table Manager sacked and TD believed higher fees of players sold could get him in good favor. Botman wanted Milan and knew Milan wouldn't go over the 3OM. Newcastle put in a higher offer and then put in a higher offer then that essentially bidding against themselves. The Lille TD was pushing Botman to Newcastle despite wanting Milan. Finally Botman gave up and just said I'll go to Lille.

It's incredible poor business management by Lille here and I know if I'm a player I wouldn't want to go play for a club who's technical director apparently doesn't care about the players. Business and all I get but Newcastle outbid themselves here. It was only 5-1OM but I'm afraid clubs now see Newcastle as a club they can get more from and use that.

There has been fear of a “Newcastle tax” ever since the takeover. So far, I think the owners have shown everyone they won’t be gouged. Outside of the emergency striker buy of Chris Wood where we paid a high buyout clause (and took him from a relegation rival) and maybe paid a little more for Botman, they’ve been very shrewd with everyone else. 10 million for England international Pope? 12 million for England international Trippier? 40 million for Brazil international Bruno already looks like an absolute bargain, especially considering they got him in January. 15 million for a proven LB in Targett? Dan Burn was 13 million, also in January. I honestly couldn’t be more pleased especially when you consider this is their first two transfer windows, one of which took place when they were facing relegation.

Yeah I'm happy overall I just see some fellow Newcastle supporters acting like we stole him from Milan. Like I said in my One Magpie group and the Philly Newcastle Club Milan has set Prices on Targets and won't go above those fees. There's exceptions but they are really good with holding to those boundaries. Newcastle did offer the better price at first but Lille wasn't budging till Newcastle raised it and that's where my problem is.

I'm more mad with how Lille handled this because I think outside of Newcastle blinking both clubs stayed pretty firm in offers. I just think this is one of those times Newcastle should've put their foot down and had a take it or leave it and walked off if it wasn't accepted. Show they won't be held for ransom. You also have to be careful of flops and you know Fifa and UEFA ain't giving us a good deal on FFP either if players flop and we aren't successful.

Here is the potential LAFC lineup if Bale comes and note that because of these TAM deals, LAFC still has a DP slot open where they could amp this thing up significantly

Kylian Mbappe is at the Banc of California Stadium to watch LAFC - New York Red Bulls. He is one of the premier players on the planet on an increasingly rare vacation. And he's spending some of that rare personal time watching an MLS game. Hell yeah.

I still think they are hiding something.....

More from John Thorrington on LAFC's signing of Gareth Bale: "If Gareth was making this decision with a financial motive, he wouldn't be in MLS."

Most people think he just wanted a club so he can stay fit for the World Cup. May as well hang out in LA while you’re doing it.

What team X from Confed Y sells a player to Team A from Confed B and the sale involves a payment plan over multiple years who judicates should Team A fail to make all payments?

Is it FIFA?

sounds like he made sure he could golf a ton

LAFC co-president/GM John Thorrington on questions of motivation of Gareth Bale. Says he's not worried about his mentality whatsoever, then points out sharply: "It’s simply possible to like to play golf and also want to win. They’re not mutually exclusive concepts.”

well you watch long enough and you see everything.

A Philly Union trainer, coming on the field to tend to a player picks up a red card for getting into a shoving match with an opposing player.   :lmao:

Is he suspended for the next game??  :lmao:

yeah- the MLS timing is perfect for him to get fit over the summer and then have a little break to recover before national camp and the WC. ironic that MLS is going to provide the US's main competitor with best possible fitness.

he was looking at Cardiff City (home team, championship) as well, but would miss out on the summer match fitness and then be potentially signed through until the next summer... also talk of him retiring after the WC (although he's still youngish in terms of some of those elite guys- younger than future MLS retiree Messi, iirc).

Maybe Acosta can place a rather hard tackle on Bale and put him on the IR for a bit.  Having Bale in MLS could actually benefit the USMNT in that case.

Oops, forgot Kellyn Acosta is at LAFC now.  Doing that in practice may be frowned upon.  Still we have others in MLS that like a well timed 'professional foul'.

no chatter about Jesus to Arsenal?

I mean- I get City is extra stacked with Haaland coming in, but that guy is money- and just starting to get there. I would've thought they'd want him in another league and not to a possible competitor... could see him tearing up La Liga, tbh. Arsenal with a couple nice moves so far this off season. but sadly- not so great for US legend Balogun.

Not sure I agree.  He was a nice player but at City he is a squad guy.  He never could replace Aguerooooooooooo (who could though) and I think they expected more.  So they get Haaland, sell Jesus for a nice fee.

Arsenal could be a good spot.  Young team and he may just fit in better there.

Agree that he hasn't always been. But I think he was just starting to find his way on that team at the end of the season, and starting to look really dangerous and knock in goals in league and CL.

Eta...looking around, imo he is a guy poised for a breakout upcoming season. At least with city. Might take some time to sort out whatever Artetas trying to do over there.
