I agree and has I have stated I love Holmes, but you cannot ignore his very poor play the last two games. IMHO a coach cannot just call out reserve players for their poor play and ignore the starters poor play and keep his credibility.
Nonsense. I guarantee you the coaching staff is not ignoring poor play from anyone. They go through the film and it becomes obvious to the whole team when a player, regardless of his status, is screwing up.By calling out underachieving players to the media Tomlin is sending a clear signal that they better get their act in gear. He does cut a little slack in that area for proven vets because he knows these guys will come through for him down the road.Tomlin is in no danger of losing his credibility with his players or front office and that is pretty much all that matters.
The clear message I want Tomlin to send is that everybody better get their act in gear. The proven vets are the ones who shouldn't be resting on their laurels and lead by example. Young players will have their ups and downs, but the vets need to play up to their previous set standards and so far too many are not. Let's hope SD is just what the doctor ordered and they get back on track.

Wow. Read an article from the Beaver County Times yesterday that quoted Redman as saying the Steelers told him to be ready. Thought it was bunk as I didn't have a clue who would be cut to make room.

The one thing about Tomlin I really liked was his change in philosophy (from Cowher) was that young players can play and contribute. But at the same time I see the continous issues that these young players seem to have when we try to use them as a key cog early on.I really hope Redman can keep his ypc over 4.1 (sans short yardage) and not fumble. He will still need to learn the packaages and schemes, no doubt.
Yep. Redman goes in on short yardage, and it's a telegraph that is a run play. Roethlisberger audibles out to a pass, how do we know Redman hits the correct blocking scheme?I loved Redman in preseason, not too sure of his entrance in week 4.

What an awesome time. The hotel was a bit of a walk but overall not paying for parking and getting the room $50 cheaper than any others was worth the 75 in savings. We didn't have time to hit any local places, we arrived around 1:30, walked around penn street for a while, not sure if it was "china town" but my wife wanted to buy a hat and we hit one of the 17 stores and street vendors selling stuff. Was a couple blocks from the hotel. After tha weheaded to the duesquene incline to take some pictures. We were starving so we didn't bother finding a local place, we just hit the first place we saw.Go back to the hotel around 4:15 or so and took a nap.Walked over to the stadium around 6:30. The walk there was cool, walking over the bridge and along the water to the stadium was a very cool experience. It took us about 25 minutes to walk from the hotel to the stadium. The boater tailgaters was great. We wished we had more time and we would have hit the casino. That stadium is really nice, it's only the 2nd PRO football stadium I've been too but man it was great. I'm sure the fact that it's "my team" helps :)I wish we had more time to hang out and hit local places but we didn't.The good news is the wife liked it and mentioned maybe making it a yearly event. It's expensive for us to do that but :thumbup:It helped that they won

Another decent breakdown of the Steelers from postgameheroes.com, specifically Woodley's performance and lack of sacks vs. SD.

Calm down everybody, I found LaMarr Woodley.

...

That’s right people….Woodley dropped into coverage on 41% of all San Diego passing plays. For a frame of reference, Woodley rushed the QB on 72% of all passing plays vs the Ravens in last year’s playoff game. He rushed the QB on 56% of all passing plays in the playoffs last year against San Diego and he rushed the QB on 81% of all passing plays in the Super Bowl against the Cardinals.

...
ETA: KDKA reports that Stan Savran is in ICU after having quadruple by-pass surgery.

from a peter king article:

Free Agent Of The Year

1. Darren Sharper, FS, Saints.

2. Brett Favre, QB, Minnesota.

3. Correll Buckhalter, RB, Broncos.

Sharper told me Sunday that he seriously considered signing with the Steelers and old college teammate Mike Tomlin early in free-agency, but then New Orleans got into the picture and Sean Payton told him, "We just need a couple more pieces on defense, and you're a big one.'' Tomlin agreed that New Orleans was a better spot for Sharper, and so he went. He's the NFL interceptions leader with five after four games.

News from Mike Tomlin's press conference today:

DE Aaron Smith has a significant shoulder injury and will likely not play this week against Cleveland and could be out for several weeks. Travis Kirschke is also banged up and will be limited in practice but should play.

S Troy Polamalu and RB Willie Parker are expected back at practice tomorrow. Tomlin did not say which RB will start or how many carries each will get.

Not much else to report...

Ugh...just cut Eason for Redman too. Thin along the front right now. Might there be a Ziggy sighting vs. Cleveland?

I got the feeling it could be even more than several weeks. Hope not. Sounds like they should know more later today.

I heard the same thing, and then I saw Eason show up on our inactives list this past Sunday. When I dug around, I found that we waived Redman and picked Eason back up the Monday after he dressed for the game:

So I guess Redman is still a free agent because I don't see him on the practice squad roster. But there are some reports on the web that he was resigned to the PS. There does not appear to be any definitive information on this. Hopefully someone will ask Ed Bouchette about it in his chat today.

Redman was re-signed to the PS.Wink and nod agreement with Eason.

I think we can withstand Smith's absence far more easily than Troy's. The secondary play has been painful to watch with him missing.

Hopefully it is a short term concern regardless.

The last time this defense played worse than they have for the last month was when A.Smith was out, and I think the D looked worse then than it does now. Troy being out has been huge, but Smith is the unsung hero and may be the secret defensive MVP.ETA - Hopefully there is a silver lining and this easy schedule is the perfect opportunity to get Ziggy some good experience and still be able to make a playoff run. Starting to look like a wild card berth with the way Cincy is playing though.

No argument about Smith's value. Grade A stud.Simply stronger depth at the DE spot than the S spot drives my feeling.

I have not seen a pro player look much worse than Ratliffe has over recent weeks.

Tomlin had a great line, he said, "Ziggy is still in the oven." Not a finished product. He said they'd use the rotation of Kirschke, Eason and Hood while Smith is out.

We're only 1 game back and still have Cincy again in Heinz Field. Way too early to concede anything.

Smith could be toast for the year.Surgery. Out 3 months minimum according to one "unofficial" report so far, but Tomlin seemed very somber earlier, so I tend to buy it. He's typically pretty cryptic with injuries and he was pretty quick about saying "it could be significant":

A source with the Pittsburgh Steelers revealed to SteelCityInsider.com that Aaron Smith will undergo surgery on his right rotator cuff Friday, and that he won't be able to play for at least three months. That leaves the Steelers' valuable defensive left end out of action until the middle of January, meaning Mike Tomlin will have to make a decision similar to the one Bill Cowher made in 1995 with Rod Woodson, when Cowher left open a roster spot until the Super Bowl that season.
That sound you hear is the Steelers rush defense potentially being sucked down the toilet bowl. That month they played without Smith a few years back was GHASTLY in that regard. If Hood ain't ready now, he needs to get ready pronto...like by Sunday. They can't afford to "leave him in the oven until he's done." No time for them to wean him off the teet now. Gonna have to throw him in the deep end of the pool. If he can at least not allow them to totally fall apart vs. the run I will take that as a "win" for having to chuck the rookie out there. The Steelers' offense needs to get their s@#$# together NOW. This team is still talented enough to weather this if Smith is out long-term....but not if they keep letting teams off the hook on O.

To add context to that stretch:Ryan Clark was out at the time. Clark Haggans was the LOLB. Travis Kirschke's back was pre-surgery. Eason has improved. Troy was in his first game back from a knee injury in that first Jags' game and played the rest of the season before having offseason surgery on it. Throw in that, Davenport's horrific performance made sure our defense lived on the field, especially in the second half. There was more to their defensive struggles than just Aaron Smith.

So the pass D gets better just in time to see the run D go to crap. Now, instead of having to score lots of points on offense to keep up, we have to worry about how often the offense gets on the field. Good thing the schedule is soft, but this doesn't bode well for post season play.

Tough way to get younger, but maybe good for the futre?

This is what I'm thinking, too. At least it happened while Harris was sitting out there on the PS for us to snipe. I'm guessing this may be Kirschke's last season and Hampton's status is still up in the air, so if Harris works out well, there should be a roster spot open for him next year through attrition.

I'm not as worried as I probably should be, only because I think it will be important to get Ziggy in there. Now is as good a time as any. He showed alot during preseason.

I understand they will be rotating some guys but I think either they will eventually go to Ziggy most of the time based on his pedigree or Ziggy will downright win the spot through his play.

Primarily against 2nd team and scout team linemen. Personally, I think Kirschke gets the vast majority of the snaps as long as he's healthy.

From everything I've heard/read - Ziggy's biggest problem at the moment is that he doesn't hold up at the point of attack well enough yet. That's death for a 3-4 end in this scheme. He'll be fine when they cut him loose to penetrate and blow plays up in the backfield, but if he's getting pushed around in run-blocking by some of these behemoth RTs, he's not going to see a lot of time. Having an end that can't hold up when you're blitzing your OLBs is suicide. RBs will be hitting the second level and getting brought down by secondary guys regularly, and if they have to move Troy up to protect against that, they take away his greatest strength, the ability to read QBs and make plays in the secondary.
