*** Official Super Bowl LI Thread - Falcons vs Patriots *** (1 Viewer)

People laughed at my number crunching and analyses. It didn't look possible and was a wild ride to get there, but in the end, I was off by a single point. Drops mic.
:goodposting:   Your posts early in the week kept this thread going when it seemed no one cared about this game.  Kudos for the effort and for being spot on with your model above.  Good stuff.

Great game to watch obviously.  I thought James White was tremendous, just played his *** off.  Brady is incredible, same with BB.  I think the way NE controlled the ball really had a major affect on the Falcons D.  Their defense had to play way too many snaps in this game.  Of course the play calling was horrendous, especially when up by 8 in FG range and we all know how that worked out.

When Atlanta went up 28-3 I remember thinking about how impossible it will be for the Pats to come back without allowing Atlanta to score any more points.  I figured the Pats could still score 30 points, but I did not think they could hold Atlanta to no more points in the process.  Incredible game!

Falcons went backwards after the on side kick, and again after the Julio catch.

Had to like Belichick settling for the field goal lateish, when every instinct had to be saying we need a T.D.  Given a chance to panic he did not.
Ironically it was probably a sack on that end on 3rd down that led to the FG.  It pushed them too far back to go for it.  Had the 3rd down play just been an incompletion leaving them with a still reasonable 4th down attempt they probably would have gone for it.

I believe you are correct.

Aikman & Buck were horrible. The fake kneel down at halftime was a sweet play and they barely mention it. Lewis needed 1 backside blocker to have a chance , not counting his injury

I'm sure Logan Ryan will hear about this quote from after the game, "When we got to overtime, I basically untied my cleats and watched Tom like you guys did."

I must admit that when NE won the OT coin toss, it felt that the game was all but over. It just felt that NE was going to go down the field and score.

According to witnesses, on the field, right after the game winning TD, Roger Goodell to TB: “That was awesome. Congratulations. Great football game.”

Loved how D. Sanders changed his pick from ATL to NE after seeing Belichick's interview with Melissa Stark.  He kept commenting on how BB pretty much was guaranteeing a win.  BB didn't say that, exactly, but the confidence in the team swayed Sanders.  That was pretty bold of Sanders to put himself out there and risk his image to ATL fans especially being a former Falcon.

That was wicked pissah.
He picked the Pats on that set but then picked the Falcons when he was on set with Eisen and the rest.  He said he picked NE originally on purpose because he knew he'd be picking again and wanted to see what people said to him on social media.

From MMQB . . .

“Funny thing,” said offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels after the game. “When we came out after halftime, “Bill said to me, ‘We’ll be okay. Our guys believe. They will fight their *** off.’

Jim Harbug would have gone for it. He does it at least twice a year and costs the team wins.

It was 76 degrees inside NRG Stadium and felt warmer by game’s end. Atlanta was gassed. The Patriots could have played two more quarters. “You didn’t see anyone on our team tired,” said Matthew Slater. “We practiced in pads in Super Bowl week. Who does that? We’re squatting 80 percent of our max in Super Bowl weeks. We work. And tonight it paid off.”

It did seem like a lot of Falcon players were dropping like flies in the second half/OT.  Legit injuries, being gassed...maybe a combination of the two.  The up tempo pace had the defense reeling.

One of things that struck me during the pre-game was Sal Pal, reporting from the Pats hotel, said that the pre-game planning for New England was simply "getting plenty of rest and hydrating".  Sal explained that the Pats staff told him that the second half of dome Superbowls get very warm and humid and teams often tire in those conditions so the Patriots were taking every precaution to guard against dehydration.  In light of the comeback and how the Falcons fell apart in the 4th quarter, that was an interesting bit of foreshadowing.

While that makes sense and seems to have contributed to the outcome, the two things I would be curious about would be 1) the Falcons play in a dome so you would think they would be used to it and 2) they opened the roof at halftime for Lady Gaga's performance (which you would think would have helped the temp / humidity / air circulation.

ATL D was on the field for something like NINETY TWO PLAYS!!

Refs called this game brilliantly btw.
They only really missed one crucial call. On the holding call on Atlanta.....there was an obvious face mask and they blew it. It would have offset the holding and who knows what might have happened.

It was a huge missed call in an otherwise well officiated game.

The WWE bodyslam of Dion Lewis wasn't called either.

I wasn't upset about it because I think the refs did a very good job all around.  They let both teams play, called the blatant holds (Bennett v. ATL player, ATL player v. Chris Long, etc.) and were spot on with the calls on the field (Jones feet in bounds, the insane Edelman catch, etc.).

I didn't see the replay but it looked like there was a pretty massive chop block (one guy hit high at the same time another guy hit low) on the long pass to White down inside the 10 in overtime.  I think it would have been 2nd and 28 had the penalty been called.  I could have seen it wrong though.

Of course the way the Pats were moving the ball, 28 yards would have taken them about one play to pick up.

I did not see it. But if it happened...that's pretty big too. But overall they let them play. Usually the post season the officiating is far better....for the most part. Last night I thought they did a really good job and the pace of the game was outstanding.

Of course hindsight is 20/20--but it's become obvious that the Pats were an above average team that finished the season very strong due to a patty cake schedule.  It's also become obvious that the Falcons are elite offensively and criminally under rated defensively.  They are for real and are a far better team than I have given them credit for this season. I was rooting for this to be a close game--but watching how well the Falcons are playing is pretty cool.  Hats off to them.
Yep, gotta love that 20/20 hindsight ;)

In the 2000 Orange Bowl, Michigan's Tom Brady threw for 369 yards and four touchdowns, including three to David Terrell, and the Wolverines twice overcame 14-point deficits to beat Alabama 35-34 in overtime. RB Shaun Alexander rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns for Alabama.

So many mouthy haters, so little time.

I tip my cap to Atlanta, can't believe how well they ran the ball and how well they played D for most of the game. I thought NE had several edges going in and 2 of those edges were experience and mental toughness and in the end it was the difference imho. Just an unbelievable game by both teams.

I believe that was the same David Terrell that wRONg Borges lambasted BB for not taking in the draft. Instead NE got stuck with that stiff Richard Seymour   ;)

I just watched the game replay. On the facemask...BOTH players were grabbing the facemask. It's clear as day.

Watching on TV, I could lip read "awesome" coming from him.  I'm sure the quote is accurate.

This is exactly what happened in the Pats/Panthers SB at this location.  It's why the game went from a defensive struggle early on into a scorefest in the 4th quarter.  I remember this being mentioned in Sports Illustrated after that game.  Also, they said the halftime pyrotechnics in that dome didn't help matters.  At least last night they opened the dome for Lady Gaga which may have alleviated some of that.

LOL at the ****'s Sporting Goods store outside Atlanta that had their staff set up all the Super Bowl Champion Falcons merchandise as soon as ATL went up 28-3. Oops.

And hats off to the Boston Globe for their out of town edition going to print with a massive picture of Tom Brady lying on the field with Robert Alford jogging down field to complete the pick six with the headline A BITTER END and the corresponding article describing the bitter loss to the Falcons. Oops there, too.

Patriots players, like their coaches are smart, other teams have dumb coaches and dumb players. Sanu was too busy admiring his RAC to get up and lobby for the facemask, which he may have gotten. Edelman would have (lobbied).
