As for MVP...White had himself a big time game and is worthy of consideration but it's Brady...gonna go out on a limb and say at no point when the Pats were getting lit up did anyone say "we can still do this...we have James White"...that is not a knock on White but this comeback does not happen without Brady and his 466 yards and 43 completions which are both Super Bowl records...

Then White scored a couple of TDs and got a 2 point which helped trigger the rally.  I knew Brady was going to win it but White set a reception record had scored 3 TDs plus a 2 point conversation.  When it's close a QB is always going to get the nod.

Yes, i think they said he is giving it to him. And I saw a picture of White that looked like he was at Disney World. Not sure if Brady let him go in his place. 

ETA- Apparently the NFL stopped giving out a vehicle to the MVP last season.

Serious question: has any other player in Super Bowl history scored three touchdowns and not been the MVP?  

Note: Brady should have been the MVP.  I am just asking.

Roger Craig – San Francisco vs. Miami, XIX (Montana MVP)
Jerry Rice – San Francisco vs. Denver, XXIV (Montana MVP)

I forgot that there were two players to score 3 TD in the same Super Bowl . . . and neither one was MVP. So 5 times out of 6 occurrences did a player score 3 times and not win the MVP.

The fan base does not acknowledge that they cheated and got caught. The fan base argues that unless there is proof, beyond a reasonable doubt, to them, the fans of the franchise, that this was nothing more than a witch hunt.  That is their prerogative.

Me, I recognize the Commissioner as the representative of Bob Kraft's partners, the other owners.  The other owner's were open to the idea that Bob Kraft's organization was cheating its partners.  They conducted their investigation according to pre-agreed upon principals and guidelines, found Kraft's organization liable to the partners to a civil degree of certainty for cheating the partners, that degree agreed to by Kraft in the partnership.  This happened more than once, but not enough to confirm a pattern if you believe the axiom that it takes three to make a pattern.  Some see a pattern, some not.

In the end I do not fault Patriots fans for their loyalty, nor do I fault others for seeing the matter differently, as do I.  I do note that there are 5 Lombardi's in the Pats trophy case.  I don't see that changing unless they add more.  None are going to be subtracted.

Yes, Kraft (or any NFL owner) basically has no chance of winning a lawsuit against the NFL because that's what they agreed to, when they joined the league.  A hack lawyer would claim that a team getting punished (and having no legal recourse to sue and overturn the punishment) is proof of guilt.  A competent lawyer would disagree.

The whole situation was garbage.  Goodell got butthurt because Brady wouldn't give up his phone and imposed an egregious penalty.  There is no concrete evidence of any wrongdoing and the entire league does the same thing (Rodgers likes his balls overinflated).  As it turned out, those extra weeks of not getting hit may have contributed greatly to Brady's health for the playoffs.  Roger didn't expect JG and JB to go 3-1 in Brady's absence.  Goodell is a lackey, pure and simple.  The entire mess blew up in his face, and in the faces of all the other loser owners who are just salty over being outclassed year in and year out.

 
Watching the game again as well as some of the other stuff and one guy who gets overlooked in this game is Amendola...made a bunch of real big plays...he was not worth the original contract they gave him but I am very glad both sides have figured out a way to keep him in Foxboro...

He is always one of the guys on the bubble in terms of returning or not, and this off season will be no different. He is due $6 million this year and NE would realize a $6.5 million cap savings by releasing him.

I get the feeling he's a guy who wants to stay and will take the cut necessary to do so...plus I don't see too many options out there where he can really cash in...this is a good fit for both the team and player...

They are a great dynasty.  My team isn't close to winning (probably ever), so outside of that I don't really care who wins.  My comments have to do with whining even after winning the championship.  Bad look is all.   

"You along with" Pats fans should probably enjoy what you have, stop being so defensive, and trim down that chip-on-your-shoulders.

Not single-ling out any1 in particular, but got to laugh at the "never let it go, never say die" lineup of whiney tools who obsessively antagonize, trash and whine about NE and their fans in NE centric threads and then want to pontificate and lecture everyone on whineyness and class :rolleyes:  We know why NE & ATL fans are here and we know why the last of the jealous & classless NE hating turds are still here; best to ignore, but the haters peeing into gale force wind (really all over themselves at this point) is a very apt analogy at this point.

Not a Patriot fan but I admire greatness.  I enjoy watching them play.  They have a great QB and a fantastic coach, what's not to like?

I respect their greatness. As a fan of the Broncos, does it frustrate me? Absolutely. It took me a long time to realize that my hatred was spurred by jealousy, pure and simple. So I've learned to cast away that hatred and just appreciate the fact that I've been able to witness such spectacular feats in my lifetime.

I think Brady is probably the most mentally tough football player, and perhaps athlete, of all time. Is he the GOAT? It's becoming harder and harder to say no. Manning revolutionized the QB position and played the position in a way I'm quite sure Brady never could. On the flip side Brady did more with less throughout his career than anyone I've ever seen and his ability to win in so many different ways is something that I'm quite sure Manning could never have done. Manning's greatness was in his ability to master his system and run his system like a well-oiled machine. Brady's greatness is in his ability to adapt to the situation. In that regard he has never been bound by a single scheme.

Belichick is easily the greatest coach of all time and watching him work his magic wows me, whether it's in game adjustments or just his ability to recognize mismatches and get the most out of every one of his players. He gets greatness out of players that are cast-offs; guys no other team wants.  He can get rid of his two most talented defense players in a span of 8 months and find guys like Kyle Van Noy, Trei Flowers to step in and not skip a beat. He recognizes more than any other coach that football is a team sport; and the best way to win is by fitting the 11 best (not most talented) players together like puzzle pieces, with each of them unselfishly buying into the system/scheme, trusting each other, and doing their jobs, not for individual stats, achievements and glory but for team glory.

The sad thing is that so many people are blinded by hatred and jealousy that they will never truly appreciate what they have been gifted with witnessing these past 16 years. I know because I was that guy. I'm just glad that I finally saw the light.

Well said and I agree.  Brady is just a great competitor, along with others, and obviously a great QB.  BB is the best coach in football.  He makes adjustments quickly, probably more so than any other coach in the league.  He is also great with clock management, an issue with many teams in the NFL.  They look like a business that is well run and you know you are watching a great product.

 
Since we're on a BB love fest at the moment, IMO he has mastered team depth and in-game player rotation to help attack player attrition as the season goes on and to have fresh bodies on the field as games go on. The Super Bowl only amplified that.

I think too many teams value their top and most expensive guys too much and fill the bottom of their roster with guys will limited talent and utility. Many teams still adhere to the starter and back up methodology, and if they have some specialty players that they rotate in, they don't do it anywhere near as much or as effectively as BB does. If nothing else, BB gets the most out his roster, his players, and the salary cap.

I touched on this a few weeks ago in the Steelers and Patriots game thread when people were saying look at the difference in talent at the various positions, and I mentioned that the Pats generally don't match up to many teams based on pure talent and athleticism, but they do a phenomenal job in maximizing the talent in specific roles and have tons of players that can be utilized in different ways. When you can throw a defender in at safety, corner back, line backer, and then have him line up on the line once in a while just to mess with the other team, offenses have no idea what to expect.

I also think he and his staff do a great job with in game adjustments, and as he has said many times, if you wait until half time to start thinking about making changes, you aren't going to win many games. He starts considering adjustments after one play and many times will scrap what he thought was a good approach even on the first drive for either team. This is what killed me about the PIT game. The Steelers knew going in that the type of defense they had utilized before did very little to slow down Brady. Yet their game plan defensively looked very similar. Then they struggled on defense and still didn't really make many changes (at least from what I could tell).

I think that lack of talent might be getting exposed vs running QBs.  Having to guard against a QB running for 20 yards on top of everything else might be a breaking point.

In the past 10 years, they've won 2 SB, and ( excluding the Brady injury year ), been knocked out by Eli-2, Flacco-2, Manning-2, and Sanchez.  Not exactly a murderer's row of mobile QBs.  To say their "lack of talent" is getting exposed by running QBs doesn't really hold up when you look at their record.

I've had some of the same perception of the NE defense against mobile QBs, but they don't typically give up more points to those teams that have the mobile QBs, and I think it is just more of the bend but don't break defensive philosophy that NE has used so effectively over the Belichick years.

 
The thing I admire, and that hasn't been discussed much, is that Pats draft/trade/acquire for smarts. You can see it in the interviews. That's a big part of why they can be so flexible.

Worth a bump. Just a brilliant observation. It's time to stop and enjoy what we are seeing, for it may never happen again.

 
This year in the NFL, there were 108 times that teams has a 1st down at the opponent's 22 yard line. No team was forced to punt in that situation . . . until the Falcons kicked the ball away with 3:38 to go in the fourth quarter.in the Super Bowl.

That fact isn't going to make Falcon fans any better. And I remember the Steelers in the mid 90s, not sure of the exact year, had first and goal and had to punt. TWICE in the same season.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James says new championship ring has 283 diamonds to tell the story of the game. The Patriots were down to the Falcons 28-3 in Super Bowl LI. The amount of diamonds is the most ever used in a SB ring and more than double what the Patriots had in their rings in 2004 & 2005.

Just watched this game again last night ... because I can't watch baseball, 

I was confused at the end of the 3rd qtr ... ATL is lined up to punt and bleeding the clock. They let the play clock expire and take the penalty since they are at the NE 45 yard line.

So move them back 5 yards. Lined up to punt again and the ref starts the game clock  :confused: .

So the ATL punter just stands there and lets the qtr end. Still no punt.

So I ask, did the refs screw up or does the game clock start regardless of the delay of game penalty?

If so, why wouldn't teams with a 3 score lead just continue taking 5 yd delay of game penalties and drop 25 seconds each time?

Hypothetical scenario: ATL is up 16 with 8 mins left.

ATL ball, 4 and 10 at the NE 45.

Clock is running, ATL lined up to punt, ATL takes delay of game. 7:35 remaining = ATL 4th and 15 at the 50

Clock restarts, ATL takes another delay of game. 7:10 = 4th and 20 at ATL 45

Clock restarts, ATL takes 3rd delay of game. 6:45 = 4th and 25 at ATL 40

Rinse, repeat, 6 more times ... all the way back to the ATL 10 yard line. 

So ATL could essentially burn almost 5 mins of clock by doing this.

They would punt the ball with 3:15 on the clock ... and the clock still running.

NE gets the ball with about 3 mins left to play, down 16 points. 

I'm sure that I must be missing something here.

 
The clock does not stop permanently between plays except during the final 5(?) minutes of a half.  Not sure on the exact amount of time, but there is a point up to which the game clock starts with the play clock, even after incompletions and such.

On the other hand, I have seen teams flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for taking multiple sequential penalties, so that would be the eventual deterrent.

I was confused at the end of the 3rd qtr ... ATL is lined up to punt and bleeding the clock. They let the play clock expire and take the penalty since they are at the NE 45 yard line.

So move them back 5 yards. Lined up to punt again and the ref starts the game clock  :confused: .

So the ATL punter just stands there and lets the qtr end. Still no punt.

So I ask, did the refs screw up or does the game clock start regardless of the delay of game penalty?

If so, why wouldn't teams with a 3 score lead just continue taking 5 yd delay of game penalties and drop 25 seconds each time?

Hypothetical scenario: ATL is up 16 with 8 mins left.

ATL ball, 4 and 10 at the NE 45.

Clock is running, ATL lined up to punt, ATL takes delay of game. 7:35 remaining = ATL 4th and 15 at the 50

Clock restarts, ATL takes another delay of game. 7:10 = 4th and 20 at ATL 45

Clock restarts, ATL takes 3rd delay of game. 6:45 = 4th and 25 at ATL 40

Rinse, repeat, 6 more times ... all the way back to the ATL 10 yard line.

So ATL could essentially burn almost 5 mins of clock by doing this.

They would punt the ball with 3:15 on the clock ... and the clock still running.

NE gets the ball with about 3 mins left to play, down 16 points.

I noticed that in real time.  Same thought about a team taking consecutive delay of game penalties occurred to me too...   I agree; after a penalty like that (delay of game), I don't think the clock should have started.

 
I think this was an error. I remember seeing this live, and was questioning the clock at the time.

Clock should have started at the snap of the ball after the offensive penalty.
