I jump around a lot to increase acrobatics, and I also heal a lot even when I don't need to in order to increase my restoration ability. Is this pointless or am I doing good?
If it's not a major skill of yours you're golden as minor skills don't affect levelling at all. If those are major skills you could be in trouble if increasing them too much causes you to level without your combat skills keeping pace. All encounters are scaled by your level so you'll be spawning higher and higher level monsters... and will only be able to jump around and heal the damage they do you.

Question for those who have completed the "Paranoia" quest, I think I just ####ed it up:

****SPOILERS*****

Galrthir has you follow three people.  The first two I tailed all day and there was nothing doing.  The third guy, the Davide wine making dude, I lost him for part of the day, and later that night Glarthir asked me about him, I told him that there was nothing doing and he got pissed and attacked me.  With his fists.  Hah.  I wiped my ### with him.  Now then, the part of the day when I lost that guy I was supposed to be tailing...was he really plotting against Glarthir?  What happens if you told him so?  In any case, I now have a house where I can store #### in Skingrad (Glarthirs had his key on him when I killed him).
No, that is what happens. I just really like the variety of quests. Not sure if you told him the other way.
It just depends on what you do. I told Galrthir that Davide was plotting against him, at which point he ran off to go kill Davide. I then told the city guard about it, and the city guard went and kicked his ###.

I bought the waterfront shack in Imperial City. Those pirates were mouthing off every time I passed so I waited until one of them was talking with the Captain of the Guard. As soon as I set foot on their boat they drew their swords and immediately got hacked to bits by the Captain. Like a good mage I just stood there and watched. When he was done, I stripped the bodies and dumped them in the water. Effin' pirates.

Good call on dumping them in the water. I killed them a while ago after I stepped on their boat, and their bodies are still lingering on the waterfront.

Has anyone run into Hackdirt? Messed up town, man. Had to open me a can of whoopass on them.
There's more to Hackdirt than meets the eye.And you're not done whooping ### there.
Are you referring to what lies beneath? Because I kicked their asses, too. :boxing:
In part, yes. But there is a quest associated with the town.
I [sPOILED] if that is what you are referring to. If otherwise, I will have a hard time finishing the quest because, um, well, you know. Their ain't no one left alive. :bag:
That's it. If you didn't actually get a quest for it, let me know... you may be due a reward.
I never got the quest from the mother, but when I ran into the daughter, she asked to help her and it got me going. What is the reward?
Sorry, I had to go check what the reward was.***SPOILER***

Free Mercantile training. You didn't miss much.
Yeah, I got the reward. Big whoop, huh? Give me the goods, #####, or your daughter dies was not a conversation tree option. :kicksrock:

All you people who are dragging bodies around and dumping them in the water....Ar eyou PC'ing? I haven't figured out how to do this on 360.

I think that jumping is affecting one of the major skills because after leveling up I always have to sleep to get to the next level. But I do get to add points to "strength", so I'd suppose that helps a little with fighting, no?Restoration just moves me to the 'next class' of restoration...no leveling up or sleeping necessary.

So maybe I should cut down on the jumping then?

The best thing is to not even choose those as majors. That way, you can still improve them and get a lot better, but it won't put you at a disadvantage in combat.

found out from a GB that to drag bodies on the 360 you use the left shoulder button. Hope that helps with your rotting corpse problems.

Oh, well too late for that now I guess. Oh well, I'll just cut down on jumping a bit and level up at a normal pace...no problem.

Ok need help...

I'm at Cloud Ruler Temple, but I don't have a key to get in. Martin is here with me, but Jauffre(sp?) isn't...I don't know what happened to him along the way, but hes not here.

Where do I get the key and why isn't Jauffre with me?
Make sure you talk to all the guards outside the Temple, Jauffre just showed up for me on the upper part of the stairs there.
I'm not seeing any guards at all.

It might be time to make a new character.

Without goin into too much complicated detail....Level up minor skills more than major skills. If you are a combat character, you will want strength to increase the damage of your sword. To up your strength, it is best to level up strength-based minor skills (blade, hand2hand, blunt) a total of 10 levels (no less). If you are a bow character, you will want agility to raise the damage dealt with your bow. To do this, raise the agility-based minor skills you have (sneak, security, marksman?) at least 10 levels before your next levelup. Do this to 2 other categories (willpower, intelligence, endurance, speed, etc). Next time you level up, the 3 catagories you focused on will have +5 beside them. This is how you take advantage of the system and become stronger than the enemies. Not doing this in some way will make you weak over time and unable to fight in simple battles in advanced levels.

My biggest complaint about this game so far is...

Spellcasting.

Don't get me wrong, the spells are cool, but 8 quick slots to spread between weapons/spells/potions is absolutely atrocious. This combined with ridiculously short spell durations, I find myself just ignoring the fact that I have shield, summon, and debuff spells at my command. I can't wait for a mod to come out with some enhanced hotbars.

Wow, game just froze on me for the first time...pretty annoying.
That happened ALL the time to me in the last one....HATED that....I had to save every 30 seconds or I would have to redo a bunch of stuff....

Agreed about only 8 hotbuttons.

I kind of agree, but I guess I've gotten used to it. Besides, if you have access to the Arcane University you can make your own spells: extended summons, all sorts of mixed damage spells, etc.I know I'm limiting myself in a way, but I really only use a handful of spells on a regular basis; any other spells I need are an F3 away.

Strange....I went into Bruma to look around and all of a sudden Jauffre was right there by my side....I guess I have him now, hopefully I can get in the door.

I'm with Baurus in the sewers now...how the hell do I get the 4th book from these guys? They are so strong and theres so many of them, and I can't seem to hide from them!!

I didn't have much trouble with them. You may be seeing the effect of you constant jumping / leveling up without improving your battle skills.

I have to solution to the freezing problem for XBOX 360... It was happening to me a ton like every 20 minutes and got more frequent as I played. At first I thought it was my disc so I returned it for a new one... Nope, kept freezing, so I thought it was my XBOX so I called and had them repair it... While waiting for the box to arrive to send my XBOX into Microsoft, I stumbled upon the Oblivion forums for technical issues. It seems that Oblivion takes up a lot of the harddrive with caches for the landscape and all that stuff. To fix this you just hold down A when you restart the XBOX and the game is loading. It cleared out my cache so now everything loads faster and I have no more freezing. I just clear it out everytime I start the game to be safe. It doesn't affect your game saves... Hope I helped.

Wow. That will certianly help me -- I thought I had to put up with it locking every other day or so.ETA: Oh, and I agree totally with Ignoramus: as soon as you get to the arcane Uni, you'll be set. I made an all purpose shield/invisibility/night-eye/fortify magika spell. One slot for what takes up 3 right now (I have the same problem of not bothering with shield) ... Invis makes everything soooo much easier

I haven't used invisiblity yet.. but I have sneak jacked all the way up and it's pretty much like being invisible.. 6x sword in the back.

Sneak attacks roxs0r. GF'nB giving them an arrow to the noggin and watching them fly over a railing or something.
Nothing is better than waiting for a rat to jump at you and fireballing right below them to make them go flying over your head or into a wall and die.

LMAO last night at a goblin shaman I blasted with lightning -- the thing flopped around like a fish w/ ADD for about 2 min. GB confusing the physics engine :D Oh, and invis + sneak = wrong. bad enough you can sneak up behind them with stealth up high, but when you can walk right up in front of them and blast em? priceless.....

ETA: I've found the combination of invis/sneak to be incredibly valuable when I find myself getting ganged up on. too many guys beatin on me? Invis and sneak to a corner till they disperse, then 6x damage again lol

Finally got a character built up, a custom class similar to a crusader. Played for about 5 hours last night, mostly wandering around the City. (Anybody know how to get past the first room in the Market Section Sewers? I kept looking for a remote switch to open the door and never found it.)

Anyway, overcome with the urge to kill something, I headed out to Chorral. Stopped by Fort Ash for a little goblin cornhole, and got absolutely :own3d: by this goblin skirmisher and his little #### friend. Over. And over. And over.

Has anybody got any tips on melee combat? I rtfm and it says 'get the timing down on blocking then attacking'. Are you supposed to throw the shield up at the last second, or just hide behind it until he hits it, then attack? Either way, my reflexes must be shot to hell 'cause I'm getting :porked: , even when I soften them up with a few arrows first.

Of course, I woke up at 6:30 this morning and charged out to try it again. This time with the "Shoot 'em full of arrows, then run like little girl" strategy. That worked on #2, and I finally got #1 in a position where he evidently couldn't see me and made a pincushion outta him. Taking advantage of the AI always robs me of the "Woot!" moment at the end of a battle, though.

Any advice you could give little Moe the WampusCat would be greatly appreciated.

After posing the same question earlier in the thread, here's where I'm at..I hold block, wait for a strike, then unleash a few rounds on the enemy. It works ok, but I generally just stand in one place the whole time. I'm beginning to think there is more to strategically advancing and retreating as I'm still getting a fair share of whoopin's laid on to me if I don't use magic, even in 1 on 1's. I just don't do enough damage.

As for multiple opponents, my strategy is hold block, drink a lot of potions, and use the 'on Touch' destruction spells.

I was thinking about trying my Ice Touch spell - I need to work on my Destruction skill.

On the Market Sewer question, btw, I found this ***spoiler*** posted online:

For this one, there isn't a wheel on this side of the door. You have to come at it from the other side of the door. There's two sewer exits outside the city that I'm aware of: northeast and south-ish of the city. They show as "caves" on the map that you have to find. You can also get in through the basements of a couple shops; The Best Defense is one, IIRC, and I think the Main Ingredient is another.

If you can move quickly enough, my usual tactic if I have to melee with my little wimpy mage/assassin is to go back and forth in and out of melee range, starting my swing so it connects when I get in range, and backing out as soon as it hits, then charging right back in again. especially since I dont have a shield, its more about dodging the blows then blocking them. He just flat out can't fight more than a couple guys at once, so i revert to cowardice and invis/sneak away till they are in manageable numbers again.

I found it works well on small stuff (rats, crabs, etc.) but if you're up against anything with more than a couple hp, you're better off with longranged stuff. Unless you've got enough hp to go toe-to-toe anyway...

Circling works nice to get a shot at them from the side or behind. Otherwise, I mix it up. Sometimes blocking and taking the occasional shot. Sometimes bringing a flurry of strikes w/ a sword. Seems like every so often your opponent is vulnerable to 3-5 strikes in a row...

Wait for them to attack, block as they swing, counter with a couple swings or a lunge. Do not attack more than 2-3 times as you will get blocked and then countered. Against opponents with heavier weapons(hammers, axes) its easier to let them swing and retreat and then go in for a couple swings.
