Anybody know what Varla stones do, besides make you rich? I'm wondering if I should hang on to the two I have.

Just got my first magic weapon, some kind of burning axe (does blunt damage  ). Ran past some troll-like ape, cleaned out his locker, and bolted for the door. For some reason, he didn't follow me out of the dungeon like other critters have.

Been playing for 12 straight hours today - made 7th level. :nerd: :nerd: :nerd:

Varla stones recharge all your magic items. Weyland stones magicka.

This is just a tip for magic users that I remembered serving me well in Morrowind. If you have a magic skill you want to upgrade, say destruction, create (I guess at the Arcane University? Haven't progressed that far yet) a ONE point spell, in this case, a one point fireball. That way, you can sit and cast a ton of these things at a wall or whatever sitting in your room in the inn and upgrade that skill fairly quickly. Needless to say, this spell should never be used in combat, unless maybe you want to fireball a rat for an hour while it hacks away at you and builds your light armor skill or whatever. But it's a great way to upgrade at a cheap price, kind of like jumping everywhere.
Almost right... Good idea to create your own, but in Oblivion you can't just cast them at a wall anymore.. they have to affect something/somebody.. ie fireball has to cast on self.. not wall.. doesn't hurt that bad. I mean  Not that I'd know.

Hang on to them.. from the bit of experimenting I've done they do refill everyting.. and that's Very expensive.. 1 gold per point at the guild.. Not hard to have 3-4 items that you use on a dungen dive.. and have to pay 4k to refill.. Sidenote.. I've been using hammers and soul gems during dungen diving. and it's alot easier.. everything was broken prior.. fix before broke.. now if I could just repair my magic items.. I'd be self sufficient.. Does Expert Armourer get to repair Magic Items. .anyone know?

I just made some.. you have to get access to the Mages guild at the Capital.. then you can make your own. hold On.. I'll get the right names....... Arcane University.. at the Chironasium.. AKA Enchanting Center.. new enchanted cloths, armour, rings, and stuff next. hehe

More specifically to the on self. you get to choose up to three .. I think they are target, touch, and self.. for effect or some such. choose self.. and you are done... Access to Arcane U.. is after the recommendation quests. . :nerd:

I have been using the weyland stones and soul gems a lot to recharge in dungeon dives. I have 3 Varla stones so far saved up (I actually found TWO in one Aeylund ruin) but my frost bow and ice sword are about drained. :kicksrock: I do have about 15K saved up now, though. I still haven't bought a house, though. When you can rest in a guild house, it seems superfluous. All I carry now are my sword, armor, bow and lots of arrows. I am now to the point of using Dwarven and Elven arrows exclusively.

Man, this vampirism cure quest SUCKS. I made it out to this witch's house and now I've got to get these 5 soul gems. Problem is, I'm stuck there during the day. She won't let me wait there, and if I go outside, I die.

For anyone interested, here's a couple good links on this subject:

Made my first *big* oops in the game last night...

**Minor Spoiler**

Just joined the Fighter's Guild with my Ranged Assassain/Thief and headed out to deliver the weapons to the guys out at the Desolate Mine. Well, I sneak in there, as usual and have my Night-Eye ring on, and I notice 3 well armored "bandits" just inside. So I proceed to take them out, 1 by 1, but it's odd...none of them have weapons, just using H2H against me. Ok, whatever, so I proceed in. I take an hour to clear the dungeon, getting ganged up at times by 2 or 3 goblins at a time and really raising my Blade and Light Armor skill and loving it.

Only, when I get back to town, I get kicked out of the guild for killing a guild brother.

Those 3 guys that didn't have weapons, yeah, they were Fighter's Guild guys. :wall:   Oops. Anyone get kicked out of the Fighter's Guild?

Anyone? Also, there is a non-quest dungeon southwest of IMp. City (Fanacasecul). Has anyone done it? There is a gate on the first level with a pressure plate right in front of it, but the gate won't open and I've searched ALL OVER on how to proceed...I'm stuck. Anyone?

hmm.. 2 items to add.. I did encounter a bug. My Merchintile.. (sp) froze after I rescued the daughter.. flat would not move... and I was selling a bunch of stuff.. Check your Merc... if you have done this quest..

second.. houses are cool.. store all the stuff you can't sell... merchants have no more than 1200.. little more if you get expert in mechintile.. but not nearly what your really good stuff is worth.. according to the guide. max is 1700 (1200 plus Merc bonus. after you invest.. )

carry on

went to elderscrolls.com and got an answer...some of you may find this useful:
this is definately a bug, i've heard other people talking about pressure plates suddenly deciding they dont want to work anymore either. since you're on PC you can just open the console, type tcl to toggle clipping, fly through the door and type tcl again to turn clipping back on. xboxers will have to wait for a patch.
Also, am I the only one who didn't know that you can rename your potions/poisons when you make them    -fe

You saying it reminded me: those sigil stones make great item enchanters. you dont have to be in the mages guild either. nice little effects for not that much work and you get to name your item :D . Positive effect for jewlery, neg for weapons. That said, does anyone else find the oblivion gates less appealing than the rest of the game? It just feels to me like I step out of this incredible world and into a 3rd-rate Doom mod. :nerd:

I have read that alot of people are having that issue with pressure plates in the game. I think its a bug. Some would use the no clip cheat and take care of it that way. You can turn off clipping temporarally by toggling the console (~ key on the PC) and entering "TCL". Just do it again to turn clipping off.

I'm still working on it myself. It's a real pain in the neck. (Get it? Vampire. Pain in the neck.) You cannot fast travel outdoors because you're taking damage. I like how they make it so bright outdoors that it actually "feels" painful. I've got the gems and the vampire she wanted killed (who was remarkably easy to kill, BTW) but still have to gather a bunch of plants.

:nerd: in need of help here. I went to install my new video card (ATI Radeon X1300, which is supported. Got a good deal and it was affordable) and got a black screen in response. I followed the destructions to the letter, but no go. Here's what I've done so far:

-removed old video drivers

-inserted new card

-black screen, so:

-entered setup and tried to disable onboard video, per the instructions. Mine doesn't have an off, but it can be toggled between AGP and Auto. It was already on AGP, and I tried that and Auto with no success. Still a black screen.

I have a Dell Dimension 8250 w/2.4 Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, XP Pro, all the latest updates, etc. I know I need better specs for the best gameplay, but this should do. What's the issue for me?

Please help me here. I've read all of the pages in this string and am anxious to get my :nerd: on!

Research has led me to believe I may need to update my chipset and mboard. Downloaded the updates and will give it another go.

Still no luck - can't get anything but a black screen when I put the new vid card in
Have you installed the new video drivers?Edit to say sounds like a DOA card.

I haven't been able to install the new drivers yet. When I try to run the software w/the old card in so I can see, the program stops and gives me a "unable to install. Try to set your display adapter to standard VGA setting" or something like that. Sounds like it wants me to use a basic driver in order to run it (instead of old Radeon 9200 drivers). Arggghhh...do you really think the card could be bad? It's running (I can hear the fan, but no picture).

Edit to add that I've disabled, then uninstalled the old Radeon 9200 drivers (it was the only way I could get them not to load right away again). I'm typing this from my wireless laptop, so I can type and work on the problem at the same time...

Does it have a extra power connection on it? Many new cards do and won't "fire up" with out it plugged it as well.

BTW, there are some killer mods out and in progress.

There is one where you can have your own castle. Another one that will be making a new story line on the Dark Brotherhood. Oh, and yes a Star Wars Jedi Mod.

I presume Oblivion is like Morrowind where you don't have to start the main quest right away (But damn, the gates are wide ### open! My character can't just let them SIT there! And there's no emporer!! Who's gonna run this place?)

I've succumbed (so far) to jumping into the main storyline & I can't get anything done. So I'm gonna lay off the main storyline until my character is halfway competent. :nerd:

BTW, my wife loathes this game. Ah, well, what can you do?

hehe ... my wife liked watching it at first -- 84 hours in, however, she dreads me flipping the 360 on :nerd:

I don't know if it's just been a bad week or what, but I can NOT get in to this game like I did Morrowind. I didn't play Daggerfall, so maybe Morrowind just seemed more unique to me than what Oblivion is having spent so much time playing the previous game. But this weekend, I spent a grand total of ONE HOUR playing the game.

Wow - just started doing the Dark Brotherhood quests..... definately the highlight of the game for me so far, and I'm playing as a tank! Good stuff here.

Yeah, the Dark Brotherhood quests rock. There is a group of guys making a mod for the game to expand on the DB. I wont say too much cause I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't done all the quests yet.http://www.thedarkbrotherhood.com

Has anyone done the pillar quest as an Evoker in the Mages Guild?

If so...explain the pillar to me like im a 4 yr old child.
Is this the one with the translation book?
Yeah, that's the one.***SPOILER***

I'm assuming you've made it into the room with the pillar. On the left and right walls are a total of four plates with some phrases that you have to get the 2nd guy you talked to in that dungeon to translate for you. He'll tell you he needs a book from the first person you talked to. (Sorry, cannot remember names.)

Take the book back to him and he'll explain it to you. Basically you need to cast four spells on the pillar in a specific order to open it. IIRC, they are a fire damage spell, a frost damage spell, a magicka damage spell and a magicka restoration spell.

Nearby the 2nd guy you talk to is a chest with all of the necessary scrolls (plus a few more) just in case you don't have them in your spellbook.

Now I'm not 100% on the spells, but that's the crux of it. Just save before you start casting so you can start over if you screw up and get zapped.

OK, some help with the cheap house you can buy in Anvil (quest 'Where Spirits Have Lease’):

SPOILERS, but I think several of you are past this part already:

So, you buy that house from the guy for $5G. you go there and sleep and get attacked by ghosts. you go downstairs and find the hand with the note and how you have to have a family member to do something in the basement on that illuminati bull#### spot in the basement. Cool, so I go look for the guy who sold it to me, track his ### down in Imperial City -- My quest says I just need to convince him to help me remove the curse. His disposition is at 100 with me and he just keeps telling me I need to do it myself. What's my next step here? I'm close to putting my ebony longsword up his #######.

I'll have to double check to be sure, but I'm pretty sure I did. Why, do those come into play there? I figured it would work with normal conversation like all the other quests do.

You probably forgot it. The NPC needs to have certain information before they'll act in the right way.

You definitely need the latter, but I know I had both with me when i met up with him, that's the only think i can think of.

PLayed only 1 hour this weekend. Gotta get my taxes done this week, but that should only take an hour or so. :kicksrock:

what's everyone time logged and rank?

I'm at about 40 hours and lvl 21
The thing with the hours logged is that it logs hours even if you have it paused. I have had it running at my office and will have it paused for a few hours a day. Nonetheless, I have about 33 hours and am level 15.

I am at 32 hours and lvl 8... but I haven't been sleeping because my stupid skills will level me into get my ### kicked range. I will probably be at lvl 15 when i sleep. Trying to get some fighting skills up first... I'll probably sleep twice when I get home to lvl 10 and see if I can still handle the bad guys.
