***OFFICIAL***The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion thread (1 Viewer)

The Cow is now Listener.
I only made it to silencer before I reloaded with a new character. I'm one of those people who want the exact right set-up for me to be happy with a character so I've redone my character like three times now. It's kind of a PITA to do some of these quests over, but to offset things I try to do some quests that I had ignored with previous characters.
You may have posted it before - but what did you settle on? The one thing I didn't like about Morrowind was the urge to constantly restart with a better character.
My first was a Redguard Tank, I didn't know what I was doing at all there so while he was OK I wanted to do something more than just go in and hack and slash. My second was a Dark Elf, more of a sneak ranged combat type but I wasn't getting the results I wanted with my bow so I figured I needed the extra +10 from the Wood Elf bonus.

My third was a Wood Elf, again sneak and ranged combat. Now I had the ranged attack I wanted but I had virtually no magical ability and things were a lot more difficult to accomplish than I wanted them to be.

Now on my fourth character. A Wood Elf with major skills of Blade, Marksmenship, and and all the magic schools except Restoration. It's easy to boost up your athletics and sneak just moving around in the world. Alchemy is easy too, since you just collect all kinds of regular ingredients and make a crap load of restore fatigue potions. Block, Light Armor, and Restoration are easy to build up just by letting some rat take repeated chomps at you and using Cure Minor Wounds to heal yourself.

You also don't level as fast because your major skills are not affected by every day moving around use, so you're rarely in over your head against monsters or NPCs.

I'm sure this has been answered before in this thread probably, but I my searching skills are off...

If you train a skill at a trainer, do those skill increases count towards that skill's modifier when you progress to the next level?

OK, is there any chance in this game of constructing your own arrows?  There are some pretty sweet ones out there, but in very short supply.  I was hoping I could make them at the mages guild, but nope.

Any where else?
There are some mods out for that. There is also a mod out to increase the Listeners cash on the weekly quest.
Got a link? That link from previous is dead.
Retro's Arrow Fletching and Imbueing v1.5Dark Brotherhood Night Mother Money

There you go. Have fun!

for those of you who have cloned on a 360:  I must be doing something wrong.

I hold R Trigger to ready the bow to fire.  Go to inventory, and try to drop the arrows that I have equipped.  Get a message saying I can't drop until...blahblah.  All that works like I'm reading.

Now, when I switch to the item to be cloned, am I still holding the R Trigger in?  and I push X to drop the items that should be cloned, but it isn't working.

Edit:  found the cheat on teh intarweb

1)Equip ANY set of arrows.

2)Draw your bow back, while its drawn back press B to go to your inventory screen.

3)Click on the arrows you have equipped with A and then on any other set of arrows you own and press A twice.

4)Now find an item you wish to clone and drop it.
disregard: don't know what I was doing, but I can do it fine now

Your expert opinions would be greatly appreciated - should I bag this character?

11th level

HP/Magicka/Fatigue 174/94/207 Bad magicka, bad!

Attributes average around 50, range 34-62

Major skills range from 32-45, but Heavy Armor is 76, reflecting the beatings I've been taking :bag:

Minor skills range from 5 :bag: :bag: to 32

As you can see, I didn't rtfm closely enough to max out my skills each level. My wife's going to be out of town next week, so I've got a major opportunity to get some serious playin' time in. Virtually half my time so far has been spent on that vampirism cure, and I'd just as soon start over and .additem past that.

Whaddya think? or  on Moe?

Oh, I finished it. Most of the time (probably 4-5 hours) was spent hiking cross country to the witch's house or the vampire cave, etc. And I like to wander off course.

My thoughts on that thing have been recorded here. My point is, I could catch up to where I am now fairly quickly, and wonder if I wouldn't have a more survivable character if I paid more attention to my skills.

I jumped back into the main quest, found Martin and closed the first gate, but it just is not as fun as dungeon diving, so I am not sure if Cyrodill will be safe whilst I plunder.

I went about 1/2-way through the main quest before I started exploring hard-core. I've ignored it for a long time now, and it seems to be static. I had advanced it to a point where oblivion gates are popping up everywhere, but I can ignore them without consequence it seems. Near as I can tell, the main quest stays static if you ignore it to do other things.

If you like the character but are just unhappy with the attribute values then I'd keep it and just kick ### on the level bonuses here on out. By the time you get to level 20 you'll be happy with the skills and the fact that you dug yourself out of a hole. If you'd rather have different major and minor skills, then now's the time.

Ah - I wasn't sure I could catch up. I actually started over last night, and couldn't find anything I wanted to change skill-wise. Just hit my first level-up, so we'll see if I get bonuses better than the 2s and 3s I was getting.

Appreciate the help.

Quick question about leveling... If you go from say 0-100 in sneak before levelling, you'd get the +5 in agility right? But would you get a plus 5 for the next 10 times you leveled up? or does it only affect that initial level up?

I've basically set my character up so the only major skill i'm using consistently is heavy armor, so I'm doing really well with the attribute bonuses, but i want to make sure i'm not going to max out those skills and not have anything to bump attributes with by the time i hit the higher levels.

Can someone explain spellmaking? I have several grand soul gems but I don't know what to do with them. I go to that place in the uni but my alteration is not high enough to make my own.

Soul gems are for creating magical items in the Chironasium.

OK, I'm good on this now. Have some sweet enchantments on all my gear. Now, the sigil stones you get when closing gates....are those more, less, or the same as compared to a grand soul gem when it comes to enchanting items?

I think my sneak was in the 30's before i jacked it up the rest of the way. It affected more than one level up.. I'm not sure how many but it was atleast 3.

Just started in on the Thieves Guild quests last night. Made it through the DB and closed the oblivion gate at Kvatch. I also got a nice ring for doing a quest but it tells me I can't equip that item when I try to wear it. :(

Went into a cave about halfway between Skingard and Kvatch and got into it with a pair of trolls. I can't even beat one of these things, so I hauled ***. They chased me all the way back to Skingard, picking up a highwayman on the way. I'm doing the old 'run and heal' maneuver and can hear them swinging at me every step.

At one point one of them actually moved ahead of me  and all I had was this magnificent view of a hairy green monkey butt hightailing it down the road. For whatever reason he never turned around as I started drilling him with arrows (visualize this daisy chain). He finally peeled off and went back to chasing me.

I ran through the city gates and regrouped, then charged back out. By this time the city guard, the stableboy(!) and three other townspeople are engaged in a battle royal with the three bad guys. Finished them all off, apologized to the guard for hitting him accidentally a couple times ("I'm on YOUR side!"), and went back to the mine to clean up.

Just a typical day in Oblivion.

Sign you've been playing oblivion too much, #4293:

I went to church yesterday, and they were setting up communion. my first instinct was to do exactly what I do anytime I see a table with food on it in oblivion -- jump up on top of it and kick everything off. :bag:

Haha! I love that.. they don't want you to steal anything.. but you can jump on the tables and knock #### everywhere.

:lmao: One of the excellent minor details I love about the game.

Wow.. I didn't know what I was missing.. the Arcane University is good stuff. I've been wasting my time beating the crap out of people.. Grand Champion of the Arena... and I run the Fighters guild... some of the DB stuff... but all that would have been a lot easier if I could of made my own spells and enchant ####. When ever I start on a new character.. that's the first thing I will do.

This is exactly why I started from scratch the fourth time. :bag:

I'm too far in to restart my guy (started as a tank level 30, arena grand champ, db quest finished, warlock in MG, and pretty far through FG) but I am now starting to feel the limitations on my magic. even with enchanted armour that boosts my magic I cap out at around 260. Oh well. I'm pretty much indestructable otherwise but I would love to summon up some of those nasty mofos to fight with me.

Enchanting #### yourself is great, but I've found it to be pretty restrictive as far as the max potential. For example, my daedric longsword enchanted with a grand soul, will only have 1200 enchant points upon creation, and peters out after 20 strikes. Enchanted items from dungeons can push 5k points if not more. If anyone has tips on increasing enchanting capability, I'm all ears.

these are the people at xbox forum that have been confirmed as completing the game with all 50 of the achievements....wow...

This just in - this list also corresponds to a list of confirmed virgins that weigh in over 2 bills apiece.

I'm just about done with the Mages Guild quests. I just got the assigment and I'm headed up for the showdown with Big Perm. Lots of plot twists and backstabbing! Great storyline. I plan to go wipe my ### with him tonight. :boxing:

Does the Fighters Guild quest get this good?

I'm curious as well. But, play around with the creations -- I've created two enchanted weapons that are just brutal. One is a longswoard that drains 62 life points of every hit and is good for 60 or 70 strikes. another is a dagger with fire damage of 45 points for 2 seconds. I noly get about 20 strikes out of that, but if I go into sneak/invis mode, getting the 6x sneak attack with that thing is enough to kill (with one hit) just about every Necromancer I've come accross lately. The eeennchantments that add the damage for x seconds are the goods -- nothing like a delayed death.sneak....strike....they get amped up to strike back, and then die 1.7 seconds later

"WHATS THE MATTER? GETTING TIR!" /die

i restarted last night, as promised...

having a lot more fun with a "blade mage", i took the build from the guidebook and really liking him...

i'm using the flare spell on everything...

i know, way timid for you ekspurts but fun for me...

I plowed through the main quest last night and finished it. I was getting a little bored with how powerful my character was. I think heavy armor combined with Breton magic resistance is a bit too much. During my last few gate closes I never even bothered to block at all, I was just hacking my way through everything, and healing on the way to the next encounter.

My next go through will be with either a straight mage or archer type. It will be a huge combat change, and I'm sure I'll take plenty of lumps as I adjust.

For those of you with high-end ATI cards, there is a way to run the game with HDR AND AA! Go into your Catalyst Control Center and enable AA for all applications, then enable HDR in the game. It is supposed to look even more amazing. I am going to give this a try tonight.

How do I enchant items with like night eye and spell absorbtion and chameleon? I tried to enchant some stuff with a Grand Soul Stone with a grand soul inside and I only get like things to increase attributes and resists shock or frost. How do I get some better effects? Same goes for enchanting swords, I tried to enchant a silver longsword with a grand soul gem and I put fire damage but want to also put weakness to fire but I don't have that option. Does the type of sword matter? Do you get better enchantments with better swords? Does the soul matter or are all grand sousl the same? Finally, what are some grand souls to capture?

Obliviwiki has most of the creature/souls listed. You have to have a spell that causes the effect you want to enchant, i.e. you have to have a night-eye spell to enchant something w/ nighteye

can't help you with all those questions, but the place I always get grand soul gems is (assuming you are the arena champion, the minotaurs you fight are always grand souls)

So... I've managed to aquire a Black Soul gem that I "accidently" filled with a necromancer... (I'm the arena champ, and mage boss so trying to keep my reputation cleaner ... than not)..

Has anyone tried stacking 2 or more Grand Soul Gems, and or a Black Grand Soul Gem and a Regular Grand... ??? And if Stacking works... what kind of equipment do you need to make it effective..???

 TIA..

Yup... I am at two ogres and a big spidery looking thing.. gets me three Greaters each week.

I got my Destruction over 50 last night.. made a Glass Bow with 16 or 17 shocking damage for 2 seconds with a soul trap for 2 seconds. Nice not having to go up close to trap souls now.

Do the Burden spells slow down (or stop) an opponent? I'm getting beat down by some over-armored ho' in one of the mines, and I'm thinking that if I can just slow her down some I can wear her out with my bow. Any ideas?

I'm hoping the Thieves Guild quests get a little more interesting. After the DB quests these are pretty tame.
in comparison to the DB quests the Thieves Guild quests are pretty tame. It gets better once you start doing work for the Grey Fox.The reward of completing the TG quests has its pros and cons which I won't give away now.

yes burden can slow down someone if they are close to their max weight if they can carry. Sometimes it might take a couple of arrows dipped in a burden potion to get the full effects.
