Do the Burden spells slow down (or stop) an opponent? I'm getting beat down by some over-armored ho' in one of the mines, and I'm thinking that if I can just slow her down some I can wear her out with my bow. Any ideas?
they do if big enough -- may not work if the enemy you're facing is wearing light armor (glass?). May I suggest combining it with a speed reduction or strength reduction potion/spell/enchant? Come to think of it, a weapon enchanted with a decent amount of burden/str or spd reduction for, say, 10 sec along with 10 sec of a bit of damage could be very interesting.

either use a staff of paralysis, or make a paralyze potion and poison her with it.

depends how high his level is too. Paralyze is great if your illusion is high enough. I was going with a low cost alternative :)

Yeah, I'm only level 10 and my magicka ain't much, so my options are limited. I'm glad to hear I can hit with multiple burdens. She's wearing some sweet-looking heavy gold armor (It must be mine!), so I figure she got to be packin' a heavy load.

it is not an umbra is it??if it is glllllllllllll you'll need it fighting her at lvl 10

I plowed through the main quest last night and finished it. I was getting a little bored with how powerful my character was. I think heavy armor combined with Breton magic resistance is a bit too much. During my last few gate closes I never even bothered to block at all, I was just hacking my way through everything, and healing on the way to the next encounter.

My next go through will be with either a straight mage or archer type. It will be a huge combat change, and I'm sure I'll take plenty of lumps as I adjust.
Why not just turn up the difficulty?

Anyone else get frustrated that Mage Scholars in the Arcane University still won't talk to you, even when you are Arch-Mage of the Mages Guild?

the mages are stuck up as usual...I don't feel as bad robbing them of all their posessions

I do think it's kind of funny that I'm the arch mage with less magic skills than any of them.

At lvl 10 I'm guessing this is just Dwarven armor.

I have not played in almost a week.

Damn you quarterly taxes! :hot:
Same here; between taxes and finals I'm jonesing.
Finished my state unemployment today, and should finish up my 941, state witholding and state sales tax later today. Then I can get my :nerd: on later on.

 if it is an umbra then it will be a special dwarven armor but still pulls in some nice coin for level 10. The best part was her Umbra short sword that has soul trap so I am able to soul trap despite my poor magic skills. The only problem is it is a quest item and I can't remove it from my inventory.

It's gold and black - looks like a bee hive. And whatever weapon she's using is pounding the snot outta me in four or five hits. It's just no contest right now.

I like quest weapons. They usually have no weight, but can be pretty sweet, like a hammer I have which is Rock Shatter or something like that. Does a crapload of electrical damage. Good for when the baddies close in from missile range and you don't want to waste your really nice magic items on it.

that is probably an Umbra - Here is a message I posted a while back in dealing with her (I was around the same level as you):
Had a funny experience today.

I was searching one of the ruin sites grabbing the Welkynd (sp?) Stones and the Vallhara Stones (sp?). As I am exporing I come across an Umbra. I sneak and get her with my bow for 3x damage. Im using glass arrows so that was like 27 damage with my current skill. Her energy bar did not even move

Well I was far enough away so that she did not see me. I knew I was not strong enough to take her down so I snuck around her and continued on exploring. I got out of the cave and teleported back to my home in the Imperial City waterfront. I get to my house and sleep for a couple of hours and as I wake up I hear talking in my house... I turn around and it is the Umbra I shot in the ruin

She is not in fight mode so I try to talk to her but she doesn't say anything. So I leave my house and she follows. So I sneak and shoot her with an arrow. She comes to attack me and as she is attacking Hermonous Lex comes and starts to fight her. I jump on an house in the waterfront and I am hitting her with my arrows as Lex is whacking away at her. She was a ******* to kill. Lex can't die b/c he is a central character so she knocked him out 5 times. He would come to and start fighting again. Luckily she could not attack me on top of the house. She finally dies and Lex returns to the Waterfront and I have myself a full set of Ebony Armor & Ebony Longsword to sell :pickle:

I have yet to face an umbra. I only just saw my first Minotaur in the woods the other day. I was only way to complete a quest though so I didn't stop to kill it.

 Well, I guess there's always the old "Run back to Skingard and let the guard deal with her" option. Wonder why I would get such a mismatch? I've walked away from fights before where I was badly outnumbered but never taken such a pimpslapping from a single baddie.

I don't know why either - it is a definite mismatch.. Were you exploring a ruin site when you came across this enemy?I tried to fight her a couple of times and she killed me in about 10 seconds.

Well I became Arena Grand Champion last night. I did it in two Oblivion days. I was incredibly easy, disappointingly so.

I'd just make some poison and dip my arrow in it, then when the gate dropped I'd case 35 second Invisibility and run out to the center of the arena. I'd wait until the turned away from me and ran to a section of the arena, then I'd let loose an arrow in the back of their head.

They'd never turn around as long as I kept repeatedly pumping them full of arrows. It never took more than 4 and usually it was only two.

The only time I had any kind of trouble was when I was facing the three Argonian prisoners.

I had done the Grey Prince quests so I beat him H2H just to get that skill up a little.

Yup... I usually jumped up on the wall to the right and fireballed and arrowed them to death. I use my weekly matches to up my Destruction and collect souls.

How many matches are in the Arena Champion quests?  I am about 3 matches in and curious.
I think it is around 21. 3 for each level.
I don't think there were quite that many, but I could be wrong. I just started in the morning and kept doing them one after another until it got too late at night, then I went and bought a few more arrows, showed up the next morning and finished it off.

:goodposting: I just got promoted to warlock without the ability to cast anything other than basic heal, unlock and light skills. It's rather amusing.

I'm working on the Mage Guild and the Theives Guild quests concurrently.

Also I found this random shrine in the wilderness, didn't show up as a map marker or anything. I went up to it and activated it and it gave me a sweet new power, Dragon Power, or something. It's one of those can be used once a day powers basically fortifies Health, Magick, and Endurance by like 30 points. :pickle:

I also completed a quest for one of the Daedric Gods and got Azula's (or something like that) Star. Looks like it's for collecting a soul but it's worth like $2500 empty.

Yeah, I did that quest and gave it up to complete the quest. I almost wish I had kept it to play with it to see what kinds of souls it could trap.

Hmm, this was the reward for completing the quest. I don't have to give it up.

Not yet at least....oops! Spoiler??

You mean I can go back to the ##### to do more quests?

There was one instance where I had a quest that involved the Theives Guild and Mages Guild.

Potential Spoiler:

When you eventually get to the Grey Fox quests in the Theives Guild there will be a quest to get a certain arrow. You have to steal this arrow from a mage in one of the castles. In order to get to his layer you have to fight several sourcerers and a few demora along the way.

Anyway - the chest you need to steal the arrow from is directly in his field of vision. I used my invisibility but it disappeared when I stole the arrow and he started to attack me. I had to take him down and when I did it said I had murdered a member of the mages guild and I was supsended.

I had to go back to the Arcane University and do a quest to get reinstated back in the guild. Basically you have to bring eiter 20 Vampire Dust or 20 Daedra Hearts to the Archmage. I did it no problem (GB the item dupe trick) and was reinstated.

So if you are in both the Theives Guild and Mages Guild be careful during the quest.

I have not played in almost a week.

Damn you quarterly taxes! :hot:
Me either. But it's mostly because it's Fiesta Week and the Spurs playoffs, which I have tickets too. Anyone have a spell of Release Hangover Headache they want to sell me? I'll pay pretty handsomely. I'll probably be willing to pay double tomorrow (last night of Night in Old San Antonio, should be a helluva blowout).

Ok, I've made the plunge. Bought it last night for the PC and installed it. 5 hours later, I was convinced this is the best game I've played in a long, long, long time.

BTW, my character is a Dark Elf by the name of Drizzt Do'Urden. Forgotten Realms book fans should recognize the name and correlation immediately.
