***OFFICIAL 'The Walking Dead' TV Series Thread*** (2 Viewers)

just saw the pilotHTF does he run out of gas?wouldn't there be hundreds of places to get gas from on his way?
This is the nerd thread for the series; the serious discussion is down the hall. YWIA.
So, the gas station with no gas wasn't a clue. You know, the one with empty cars parked all over the place where people camped, because they had no gas? Think many tanker truck drivers kept showing up for work when dead people started eating their neighbors?

I feel like such a dork being this into a show, but i am happy they said the ratings were so good for last nights show (" drawing a whopping 4.7 million viewers, including 3.3 million in the key 18-49 demographic. That showed only minor audience decomposition from last week's Halloween premiere, which pulled in 5.3 million viewers, including 3.6 million in the coveted demo."). I was worried it was going to have a pretty big drop-off after Halloween, and considering it is competing against NFL late on a Sunday night, the ratings are pretty impressive.
Excellent wording. :lmao:

I'm sorry, how does this in any way spoil the show? Kirkman is not a writer or even a contributor on the show.

In the comic book, "issue 1 Rick" probably does the same thing as in the tv episode. "Issue 50 Rick" not so much. I think this is going to be the evolutionary path they take with him.
So Rick lives for a while eh? Nice spoiler tags nerd
oops.
He has said that in the end, Rick will die, and the comic will end.
Just stop, please.
:confused:Seriously, start a thread about the comic book if you want to give out spoilers.

Nerds are bad enough but rookie nerds are the worst. We had this ironed out by page 2 in the first LOST thread :blackdot:

Bit of advice for any of you discussing the comic books, we are two shows in (we being the folks that haven't read the books), anything past those two shows should be in spoiler tags. There is a very adamant group of tv show followers here that don't want to know anything about what the future holds for a show. Heck, in the LOST threads speculation was put in spoiler tags. Just a tip from uncle beer.

For me, the characters are what is interesting about the comic book. I am not even a fan of horror or zombies, but I enjoy the comic.

The TV show doesn't seem to be following the same path, maybe they can't and still satisfy the people tuning in to watch a zombie show. The characters in episode 2 were totally unrealistic and the situation was very contrived.

Seemed like unnecessary filler.

- Let's send the only black guy in camp on a trip into town with the redneck racist! What could go wrong?

- Getting into a fist fight while trapped on the roof with zombies all around? Gold!

- Gee mister police officer, is it looting if I take this? - Gosh no little lady, those rules don't apply anymore. Do you mind if I beat you with this obvious stick? PS, didn't you have a gun to my head 20 minutes ago?

Well, I am done tuning in to watch it every week. Maybe I'll skim it when it gets to DVD, but it's stale after 3 episodes for me.

Starts off horribly cheesy with redneck guy on the roof. Then you get everybody reunited too early, and then they stupidly turn around and go back into the city? Why wouldn't you grab the crap on the way out so you don't have to backtrack? Also, did I see this correctly:

He is able to get his hands on a hacksaw and for some reason decides to cut off his hand instead of cutting through the handcuffs?

*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();Add to that the whole "women are back to doing the laundry" and you are starting to get into a lot of :goodposting: territory.

Really disappointed in how the show ended up.

Gotta say I am stumped with why he couldn't cut the damn chain and the show is getting worse and worse by the episode.

There are only 3 more episodes before this season ends. Might as well just finish it out.

I didn't have high expectations, and have been enjoying this show.

I'm ok with the show, it's pretty much what I was expecting. The acting isn't top notch and I question some of the reasoning as well but I'll finish it. I agree completely with the spoiler tag above, made absolutely no sense to me and they telegraphed it a mile away.

Thank god. Hopefully this also means you'll be staying out if here too.

There was too much over the top    in this episode. Since there are only three more episodes, i will watch the rest but this is bad

I didn't understand this either.I also thought this, but assumed it was kinda like Saw, in that the hacksaw couldn't cut the metal, so he did the next best thing.

I didn't understand this either. No to nitpick - although it appears we are regardless. It could take a long time - if it works at all, to cut through a pair of police grade handcuffs with what appeared to be an old, rusty, dull hacksaw. Guy has zombies about to pop out on him, as far as he knows.

The better question is why not cut through the pipe or metal bracket the handcuffs were attached to. Would have been much faster. Or at least just cut off your thumb so the rest of you hand can slip through the cuffs.

However - for the sake of watching a show where dead people come to life and try to eat you - Ill let little subtleties like this pass.

And why is this in a spoiler? We cant talk about parts that have already happened?

What made me scratch my head was the pipe, when he freaked and started kicking it. If you watch, the pipe starts to crinkle or bend. Pretty sure if I had 3-4 hungry zombies eying up for lunch I'd go ape#### on that pipe until it broke before I'd do what he did. Either bad props or silly story telling.

Also agree that I would have sawed through the rusting bolt the handcuffs where attached to. That was all very silly.

Perhaps its because the season is only 6 episodes long, but I think they are glossing over a lot of things that typically make AMC shows great. I thought the first episode was completely awesome, the next episode was good enough, and last night was just okay. It seems to me if they are going to pull everyone out of harm's way for a while (last night) then perhaps developing the characters would be a good idea. We don't have ANY back story on most of the people in the camp, the wife dropped Shane instantly which makes no sense since I'm guessing he had a hand in saving her and her son, we haven't encountered the father and son from the first episode again, etc.

I didn't read the comics, but everyone in here has said that the character development was the key part of the story. And after episode 1 I was completely buying that. But with the exception of the women talking down at the water, there hasn't been any character development at all. I thought we'd be getting flashbacks to their lives before the outbreaks and how they all got there, but with only half the season left it looks like that's not happening.

I'm still enjoying the show a lot, but the first episode was clearly the best.

We found out in the episode that Shane told her that her husband was dead. So, maybe she thinks he did all that to get to her, rather than just save her...Also, the comic focuses on developing the characters after the apocalypse, and actually very little is known about most of the characters from before the Zombies except for occupations, little tidbits, etc. No in depth, Lost-style revelations.

 And if your belt wasn't long enough to reach the saw or gun or whatever you were trying to reach with it tie your socks to it...use your bootlaces...whatever. Hell, Mike Brady knew this. I can't stand watching shows where characters make not just stupid mistakes but unrealistic ones.

Colin,As an enormous fan of the comic book series, I can tell you that you've echoed my own problem with the shows 2nd and 3rd episodes. What makes WD, the written series, so fantastic is the characterization. We're brought into a world where people are complex. The untenable situation brings out the worst in the best. No one in that world is universally good or bad, they're multi dimensional ranging from the "heroes" of the series to the children to the villains. In the TV show, perhaps because of the need to 'dumb it down?' we're seeing one dimensional and almost stereotypical characterizations. And it's bumming me out.

I liked how they handled the wife/Shane situation. Prior to last night's episode you didn't really understand the dynamic with Shane, or why she had done what she did. But they captured her awkwardness pretty well when Rick came back, and revealed parts of the story to let you understand how it went down.

I'm still entertained by this show for the most part, but I knew it was gonna be cheesy as soon as I saw that weak fake beard Rick was wearing when he woke up in the hospital. what, he couldn't take a couple weeks and grow a real one for the part?

anyone know of a good inexpensive/free resource to read these comics? My library had compendium 1 (first 48 issues) so Ive read that, but where can I get the rest?

It was for the playoffs.

Your library is the only place you get can it for free without stealing it, but the trade paperbacks of the newer issues are available for relatively little cost on Amazon or your local comic shops.

Which is sad because I would imagine that the character stories, development, etc. could completely carry the show. I am interested in how the rednecks ended up surviving...did they fight there way through a bunch of zombies? What about the sisters - did they hide or get lucky? Where are their families, how did the two of them link up? The campers allude to having seen bruises on the one lady before - how long have they been there?

So can anyone explain why the dude didnt cut off the chain but his hand?

Please dont tell me because the dude was portrayed as a dumb###
