I don't have it anywhere near the best of the series, but it was definitely the best of the season.
It can't be a great episode when it's nothing but red shirts dying. The first 5 episodes so far have been the worst of the series.
 If you didn't enjoy last nights episode then I think this show has passed you by and it's time to move on..
The virus was a false jeopardy situation and it was obvious the main characters weren't going to die from it (except I thought they'd use it as a way for Herschel to make a heroic sacrifice for Glenn). I'll keep watching but this is an awfully cheesy show.
There are only 7 main characters left. How many do you want killed each week?
It's almost like cstu would like to see every other season be a new set of characters.. Maybe Rick and his son live, but no one else.... No need to get wrapped up into the lives of the other characters because they will all be dead soon any ways.. . :oldunsure:
But there might be something to that. I don't mean they need to kill off everyone or only keep Rick/Carl or whatever... but we've had the same small group in basically the same place for 3.5 seasons now. Personally, I'm starting to wonder what's going on elsewhere. What does it look like in New York? What about Europe or Africa? The "soap opera" label hasn't been earned yet, IMO, but the show is starting to feel a little small. I'd like to see the group (however many of them) move next season.
I agree. I got really excited at the radio broadcast and am really interested on a macro level of the world.

Feel free to include spoiler tags if necessary but has the comics done this? Personally, I don't care about that all too much. For me, this show is about this group of people (ever expanding and contracting). I don't need the show to go beyond them for it to be entertaining.

Edited to add - I am interested in how the outside world can impact this group. Be it Woodbury or the voices on the radio etc. But for me, it always comes back to these people. They're the ones I'm invested in.

I actually don't know. I tried reading the comics but couldn't get into them.

I'm invested in the group, too... but I also think a time is coming where this group isn't going to get stale if they don't move.

The writers originally were going to kill off Herschel in the Season 2 finale. So he's been living on borrowed time for awhile now.
Jesse Pinkman was going to die after Season 1
True but I'm not sure I'd equate Herschel's role on this show with Jesse's on Breaking Bad.
Interestingly the entire Break bad series could be construed as Jessie's story instead of Walter's, I do not think the same will be said for Herschel - now if you want to equate BB's Jessie with someone on TWD I would go with Daryl.

I like this. I think you could make a good argument that TWD folks didn't really know what they had with Reedus initially just like Gilligan didn't know what he at first with Aaron Paul.

Problem they have, are the two end game players Rick/Carl are 2 or the most disliked characters in the show. Checking other fan sites lots of fans don't like them and wouldn't mind if they died and the show moved on with out them.

I don't find much hate for them, just frustration at the character development and forced emotional moments.

Hard for me to conceive of this show without Rick. Not only is Andrew Lincoln great in the role but that's the most significant character on the series in my opinion. Kirkman must agree since he's often said Rick is the show's protagonist.

They won't kill off Rick or Carl, but at this point the only other indispensable characters are Daryl, Glenn and Maggie. Herschel's on borrowed time.

The prison has run its course...it's time for them to move again. As characters, they just aren't that interesting on their own. They need interaction with others to make the whole show work.

I think Carol comes back also.

I used to see Carl as mostly an annoyance, but I don't dislike him as much as I did. he's still a little stiff and wooden as a character, but I'm interested to see where they go with him. I haven't yet decided if he is either the prodigy who will one day become a leader, or a budding violent sociopath.

Thought the "look" Rick was giving Carl as they were taking care of some zombie business was kinda cool. Almost like Rick was realizing that Carl has grown up fast in this type of world, and can handle himself, and also maybe someone Rick could count on in battle.

Perhaps like the look a gushing father has when he watches his son hit his first homerun. Only different, because, you know.....one hits a homerun and the other is blowing a zombies head clean off.

I was just commenting about that look on another site. IMO, Andrew Lincoln is probably the best actor they have on that show just for the range of emotions he can convey with a look. Right after Carl tosses him the magazine and steps up to take he shots, that brief look on Rick's face... pride mixed with sorrow mixed with realization mixed with resignation... like, "holy ####, my little boy is turning into a man before my eyes but it's under these horrific circumstances and I didn't want this for him and we might die". Andrew Lincoln can act, is what I'm sayin'.

Probably, but she's really not necessary to the show. Her story arc is basically over. Battered woman and mother loses her child and grows into a strong woman who can protect other kids.

then later they share a pea pod..

Awesome episode. Can't be that intense every week but that was great.
:goodposting: also loved the background music they used to add to the atmosphere.
:goodposting: Seems like they are learning from some of the better series on tv. A much better episode than the crap fest of the first 4 episode. Lots of zombie action... Still lazy with some details though, like, where did they get all those freshly cut and limbed timber posts they were trying to support the fence with? And if they harvested themselves why was Maggie hacking away at them with a axe?

This is all that needs to be said of this show. Just dumb laziness by these writers. Chopping trees and where did they come from? For heavens sake people, this is the best you can do? This show is terrible because they did not tell us where these magical trees came from. For shame

In an alternate universe: "Why the hell would they bother showing everyone cutting down friggin' trees?!?!?! KILL MORE ZOMBIES!!!

I liked this episode...............just not the first 4 this season. But, it's silly because it's the equivalent of not running spell check.

It'd be great if they killed off Rick. He's a pretty big idiot and his narcissism is rather tiring at this point. Really wish Shane had manned up and shot him.

so is next week's episode going to show what happened to the gov after he shot the citizens up until now?
If they were using the same storytelling techniques as they have the past couple of seasons, next week's would be 95% flashback. But this season's different... I just hope it's different enough. The last thing I want personally is to have the entire episode take place in the past with the Governor, and then have the last 3 minutes in the present.
 They hardly ever use flashbacks in this show.

Maybe a parallel story?

Maybe flashback is the wrong word... not flashback like they're reshowing stuff we've already seen, but they do like to back up in time, give us story from another character, and then bring it back to the present for the final few minutes. I don't know if there's a filmmaking word for that - flashback is wrong, I think, you're right.

You guys don't get it, I don't want them to die I just didn't want this stupid virus story line.

I simply cannot stand Rick anymore. He boots Carol for stabbing the infected in the head, dragging them out back and burning them...only, to come back and see Hershel doing the same thing.

How about you keep quiet on Carol being the one and realizing the chick brings a LOT to the table.

I was  to see the Governor in the closing scenes, although it was obvious he would enter the story again at some point. He's a badly written soap opera villain played by a terrible actor. Single worst piece of casting in the entire show. Let's hope it ends quickly.

Gotta agree on these points. The guy's awful.

I started rooting for the zombies for the first time this episode. If no one wants to lock their cell they deserve to be eaten. Became a satisfying episode.

Carol killed the sick while they werr alive to stop the spread of the flu and Herahal was doing it after they died and he did everything possible to save them. Huge difference.

I'm back in...but if they kill off Daryl I will quit this show.
I cannot get past the ridiculousness of Daryl and his stupid crossbow. They have automatic weapons and he has a stupid one load cross bow. Makes no sense at all. Also if you were living in a zombie Apocalypse wouldnt you just shave off all your hair and be done with it?

There are better ways to deal with the zombie horde then putting up trees. Why not figure out a way to through gas on them all and just burn them. Trees against a fence, genius

(a) Crossbow does not make noise and (b) you never run out of arrows like you would by using ammunition. Lastly, Daryl is loyal, willing to do the dirty work, no maintenance and badass.

Ridiculous declaration that you're hopefully backing away from now.

I used to love this show but it seems like the last couple episodes have been more about zombies and less about gardening. I think I may be done with this show.

No. Pretty sure it would grow back. And continually shaving it seems like a lot more effort than just letting it grow out like he has done. Just take a knife or scissors to it occasionally if it gets too long.

In his defense, there was no way for Rick to know (other than trusting Hershel) that person was dead already. That really added to the scene.

I agree. A whole hour and they only open 1 peapod! Come on, at least give us a carrot or a potato!
If they aren't going to give us the gardening show we all desire, then they could have at least had the Pea be a mutant of some kind and attack <_<
