I can see there being a downside to a weapon like a halberd in that you would need some force to get the pointy end through a skull (you would go for the eye socket, but that's not easy to so with a six foot pole. If you thrust and the point glances off the skull or misses entirely, you could easily lose your balance. It may be why you only saw long range pole kills at the prison (through the fence). The fence not only proviles some stability (resting on the bottom of the hold in the fence, but it also keeps the walker on the opposite side in case you lost your balance and fell forward.
