Lisa definitely should have gone over Dale, but she's not going to last past another week or 2 anyway. Likewise, Dale had some chops, but can't cook anything besides Asian food. That would have carried him a little farther, but eventually he would have been called out on it and eliminated. Of the remaining five :Richard - best cook, true leader. He wins going away. It was obvious by about episode 3 or 4 that he is the cream here. I would be flabbergasted if anyone else won. He consistently takes chances and almost always goes yard when he does. He might be the best chef in any of the 4 seasons of this show. I mean, the guy lost by 3 points on ICA to Mario Batali, who is probably one of the 5-10 best chefs in the world, IMO. Lisa - won't last more than another week or two. She simply is not very good, and her attitude sucks. Shocked it wasn't her booted last night. Odds of making the final 3 : 700-1.Antonia - quietly proving she belongs. She'll be in the final 3, I have very little doubt. She makes dishes the judges like, plain and simple and has built up enough points with her recent run of success to avoid elimination over a small mistake. Spike - underrated because he looks like such a smug ########. Wouldn't be stunned if he snuck into the final 3. He trips up now and again, but he has strong recipes from working at such a top-shelf restauarant and the guy has skills. But more importantly, the strong recipes.. when he gets challenges that are in his wheelhouse and he doesn't have to work as part of a team, watch out.Stephanie - talented, but inconsistent. She is more talented than, but makes more mistakes than Spike. She has her fate in her own hands at this point, but one misstep is all it takes. I think she's #3 right now but is also more prone to tripping up and leaving the door open for Spike to get into the final 3.
Spot on accurate. How the hell did I miss this thread. For once there is a thread about TV I actually know what is going on.

I hope Spike sticks aroung until the end. He's a sneaky Mother####er.

Not sure if he's equal to the other chefs cooking wise but he has definitely "Played the game" better than any of them.

If Lisa makes the finals I may punch my TV
Don't punch it too hard. There's a rumor that they want three women in the finale this time. I didn't believe it until they sent Dale home over Lisa. The real tip off will be when they send Richard home. Then it will be obvious.

Never saw season 2 until yesterday. What a bunch of idiots. Can't believe the dude basically assaulted that guy. The winner comes off like a grade A doosh.

Oh yeah. Ilan was an uberdoosh. Plus, people keep saying that all Dale cooked this season was Asian food. Well, all Ilan ever cooked was Spanish food, because he worked in a Spanish restaurant. In fact, he used many of the same recipes from the restaurant. And he won. Season two was the worst ever.

It was poorly edited as well. Every episode had Colicchio basically delivering a dubbed in off-camera monlogue to tie up everything. Even the finale had a dubbed-in speech just before the winner was announced.

How did Lisa survive that? She is AWFUL.
Sadly, she survived it by getting under Dale's skin and making him lose his cool at judge's table. If he would've remained calm and explained that he had pointed out what was wrong with her soup and she failed to correct it, things might have been different, but his temper/hatred of Lisa got the better of him. Not that I can really blame him -- she's consistently in the bottom 3, she's annoying as hell, she has that horrible scowl on her face when she's at judge's table and she looks like she walked off the set of a Soundgarden video in 1994. Spike is pretty bad as well -- I don't think another chef as bad as these two made it as far in any of the other seasons.

Lisa is the worst Final 4 contestant in the brief history of this show.

Rooting for Richard and it's not even close.

Glad to see Allen Brothers featured tonight--they're my favourite steaks.

Stephanie/Richard

Antonia

Lisa

No way Lisa should still be there. She's a worse chef than: Jennifer, Andrew, Dale, and possibly Spike. If Richard goes home next week, we'll know the fix was in. Bravo wants a woman to win, and they WILL make it happen. That said, they probably didn't even have to go this far, Stephanie is a legitimate candidate. They could have just cheated on the finale, but Noooo.

she definitely has the worst attitude but she is still a better chef than spike. she's a distant 4th of the remaining chefs.
True, I hate them both (as contestants). I was happy to see either go but would have prefered LisaButcher quick fire was kind of lame, I liked the elimination challenge though.

I think it's funny that Spike lost the elimination challenge again after winning the quick fire.....I totally agree that Lisa has no business being in the final four. Dale was totally hosed last week.

I thought of you when I saw the Allen Brothers. Sic expensive but I have to buy some now.Richard wins this season easily. PM me if you would like to make a wager.

Man, Lisa comes off like the most annoying loser in the world. Last week when she said the "let's all go play baseball" line when trying to say she wasn't going to be in a good mood with Dale on her team was one of the most annoying things I've ever seen a person do on tv or in real life. This week after Spike is booted you see Lisa get all wide-eyed and smiley and takes a huge breath knowing she's in the final. How classless. Somebody just got their dream crushed and she's basically does a jig. How about keeping it in for a minute and showing some compassion? One of the worst humans on the planet.

I'm setting the odds like this

Richard +130

Stephanie +150

Antonia +300

Lisa +2000

Looks like they are working on whole porkers next week. Nobody is using pork products but bacon so far this season. Howie and others were all about it in season 3. Makes me think someone could get undone by it just based on familiarity.

If they knew what they were doing they'd be getting to know regional PR cuisine inside and out. Last year Hung just about got burned by not being prepared for the super predictable trout and elk show.

Dale's "Butterscotch Scallops were supremely bad. Jaw droppingly bad. So bad that there was a long, awkward moment at the table when all the judges just sat there, silent, stunned with disbelief that anyone--especially Dale--could serve something so...disgusting. It's the only time on Top Chef that I literally could not take another bite.
Great insights from Bourdain. Thanks for posting.

not sure if anyone else noticed this last night, but when they brought out the tasting dishes for the judges they told them who made each dish before they ate them. probably didn't matter for the guest judges, but I think that would have biased the other judges a bit. why not let them taste the dishes without knowing who made what?

I noticed. What a bunch of junk.

Was just watching it again and I was thinking the same thing. Also rewatched Lisa's competely selfish reaction to Spike getting booted. It's all about her all the time. She's the worst. She really went for the lez cut in the finale previews. Seems like they get a ton of gay, lez, bi chefs for this show. Just the finalists alone from all the shows put together are about half gay/bi. Lisa, Tifanni/Dave season 1, Hung/Dale season 3

They don't normally do this?

how often do they taste dishes when the person who made it isn't right in front of them? this was an opportunity for them to do it blind. there was no reason to announce who made each dish other than to allow them to let their biases influence their initial opinions.

Colichio would've spilled the beans at judge's table anyway, no?

well they had to find out at some point. I just think it would have made a lot more sense to not tell them anything until after they tasted the dish. knowing who made what meant they probably expected to like a few and dislike a few. maybe they would have been easy to figure out anyway. just seemed weird and unnecessary and most people everyone who watched it that I've talked to had the same reaction.

In almost all the challenges, the Chefs come out with their dish and describe it to the judges. I don't know why you'd think it would be any different this time.

You must not have watched much "Project Runway". I think ALL of the designer contestants are gay or bi on that series.

Just out of curiousity, have you ever worked in the restaurant business? I would pretty confidently say that industry has a much higher percentage of gays/lesbians than the society at large.

yes, so it was impossible to hide the identity of the chefs in those challenges. here it wasn't. here they went out of their way to identify who made what.not a big deal. just thought it was a dumb thing for them to do.

Richard wins this season easily. PM me if you would like to make a wager.
Stephanie will take it down. What kind of odds you offering since you think Richard is a lock?
+$140

Producers planted the frozen scallops that led to Spike’s elimination from Top Chefhttp://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/top_chef_4/2008_Jun_01_spike_scallops

Spike Mendelsohn was eliminated from Top Chef 4 last Wednesday in part because he used frozen scallops he found in the cooler at Tramonto’s Steak & Seafood restaurant in Chicago. As the challenge winner, Spike had first pick of the proteins at the restaurant, and chose a bag of frozen scallops that didn’t work well. When criticized for his choice during judging, Spike turned that on one of his critics, the guest judge and restaurant’s owner, arguing that the scallops were in his freezer.

But those frozen scallops actually came from the show’s producers via a food supplier—not the restaurant’s actual inventory, according to both head judge Tom Colicchio and the restaurant’s owner. “Their team purchased all the food and put it in the coolers. They put those in the mix to see … who would use them or not,” guest judge and Tramonto’s head chef Rick Tramonto told the Chicago Tribune.

And on his BravoTV.com blog, Tom Colicchio wrote, “My heart sunk when I heard this because I’ve known Rick for years and can say with certainty he doesn’t use frozen seafood in his restaurant. Along with the high-end steaks they had provided for the show, Allen Bros. had included a variety of other products to round out the restaurant’s existing stock, including frozen scallops, which is how they came to be in Tramonto’s walk-in. I learned later that Rick knew this when we taped the show, but chose not to make a federal case out of it. But as a colleague and fan of Rick’s, I feel it’s important to set the record straight.”

It might have made sense to set the record straight, like, during the actual episode, especially since who put them there was irrelevant to the actual elimination. As Tom points out, “Spike had first choice among a walk-in filled with high-quality fresh options. He didn’t have to use the frozen, and, frankly, he should have known better.”

However, in his exit interview, Spike calls “bull####” on the producers. “Obviously, I chose them, but all that protein in there should have been top-notch,” he said. “It’s just bull#### that they were there to begin with. … It just felt like it was just trickery at its best.”

was covered in this link too:
Per Rick Tramonto:

“The Top Chef producers stocked and paid for the product that went into our coolers. Unfortunately, due to editing and the whole reality tv way of filming, it was not conveyed that it was part of the challenge, nor is the conversation shown where Tom pointed out that they were not the restaurant’s product. None of my restaurants have ever used frozen scallops or any product that is not of the highest quality. Other than that, it was a pleasure being part of such an amazing production, and I loved the way that Tramonto’s Steak & Seafood looked on screen. It was a lot of fun to be part of.”

Wait, reality TV sets people up and then doesn’t show “reality”? This is too much for me to take. Seriously though, it is pretty despicable that the producers made it look like Tramonto was serving poor quality scallops in his kitchen. Frankly I love that he stood up to Spike and didn’t make any excuses. On the other hand, planting frozen scallops seems all fair to me, and if a chef makes that decision, as Spike did, he deserves to go.

karma. spike was out weaseled.

The show needs to stop using interview footage from the exit interviews to also recap what happened in the challenge. Spike looked so somber and almost as if he'd been crying during his interviews throughout the show and I figured that he had to have been eliminated. This happened a couple of other times as well -- with Jennifer and one other.

The problem wasn't Lisa over Antonia it was that Dale pretty much saved Stephanie's ### (after nearly ruining her). If antonia went off instead of Dale there'd be no issue. Antoina hasn't shown anything since budget wars way back. I forget the costa rica person's name last year but she's like her. Boring well executed food. Except this time it wasn't well executed and she's gone.

I guess they aren't doing the live presentation this time out as they filmed this just a few weeks back.
