***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (2 Viewers)

I don't hate it because I assume Payne is gone next year and this is his replacement.  But still.

They literally had Jamison WIlliams/Kyle Hamilton/Chris Olave fall into their lap in Round 1.  And Malik Willis fall into their lap into round 2.  And turned down the chance to draft them so they could have Dotson and Mathis.

But hey.  they are smarter than us.  I mean all the winning seasons prove it. 🤣

You could have had Jamison WIlliams / Malik Willis     Instead you got Dotson / Mathis.   Tell me which you'd prefer??

i was kind of hoping for Willis.  hes dropping pretty far though.  Maybe they like someone else and seeing Willis drop they feel they can get them in 3?  i dont have a clue about any of these guys tbh.

I dunno.  I don't really see what they are trying to achieve every year in the draft or even in FA.  It's all very confusing. What type of player they want, if they draft for need or best available, etc.  I picture Mayhew in a draft room throwing darts and saying ... yeah, that's our guy

I sure wanted McBride. Had we made a different (better?) pick earlier this round, I would have had no problem trading up to grab him here, but...

Phidarian Mathis just told reporters in Ashburn that his agent told him to expect to be drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. The #Commanders should tell him not to ever say that out loud again in any interview ever.
🤣

I guess the RB is solid value but just seems with Gibson/McKissic/Patterson we had bigger needs (OL, CB, LB) so not sure I get it.

Ron Rivera wants to build up lines/keep strong; they rotate their DT's quite a bit so Mathis wouldn't just be a "backup." Doesn't mean they have to trade Payne. Need a quality rotation. But if they keep Payne and he leaves after '22? You have two dudes.

John Keim

@john_keim

Ron Rivera said he likes that Robinson gives them a different style back because of how physical he is. Says he's a complement to Gibson, McKissic.

Robinson said he could be an elusive runner, can make defenders miss at the second level; pick up blitzes. And, he says, he "chooses to be physical in the run game." That's his calling card.

Honestly, i have no clue how this will shake out.  i guess i need to see the full draft and what happens the rest of the offseason.  But i certainly do not get it as of now.  Yes the line stays strong.  Sure we added a runner but we had depth there.  Still a ton of problems. Maybe they will give Rivera longer to turn things around

ETA:  Do we only scout Alabama?

It's been 16 long years living in the Washington local coverage map. I haven't been thrilled about that.

But now I'm a Commander fan for life. They just drafted my favorite college quarterback ever.

I dont know much about him.  Hoping hes a diamond in the rough.
Before the season, I think he had Top 5 odds to be the #1 pick in the draft. But he had a down year this year, as did the team. He lost his favorite WR that he's now reunited with, Javonte WIlliams, Michael Carter, and Dazz Newsome.

He throws a hell of a deep ball, moves well and he's a gamer.

He's great insurance in case Carson stinks it up too

So, Rivera called Wentz to reiterate that they view Howell as a developmental QB.

Look, I love Howell, but understand he needs some work.

But I'm not sure Wentz is the guy you give a "don't worry honey, he's just a friend" call to.

Seems like most coaches would say, uh, two other organizations just happily carried your bags to the airport. We're excited to give you a shot to compete to be our starter. You're welcome.

If you would have told me that WAS would come out of this draft with Dotson, Howell, Paul, Butler, Robinson I would have taken that in a heartbeat.

It's a little souring because there were so many good options in the 2nd round so it leaves you will a bit of a bad taste in your mouth.

This draft is funny because if you inserted Howell into their pick at #47 and pushed everyone else down a pick, the perception would be “this draft might piss off Wentz but what great value down the board!” All the same players, huge difference in perception due to pre-draft mocks and rankings.

My favorite pick is Brian Robinson btw. Gibson is not a real RB and his fumbling issues are not even top-5 in my concerns for him if he were the “bellcow”. He’ll be able to play more of a COP/joker role now which I think benefits the whole offense. Robinson was my RB3 in the whole draft, not that it was an incredible class of RB’s. But he can do it all and with physicality.

That makes sense. Glad he's on the case.

I mean, I get what Del Rio said was stupid, stupid, stupid, and I'm against public funding for billionaire's stadiums, but Del Rio's exercising his right to speak freely as a private citizen and as merely an employee of the team shouldn't affect the policy pros and cons of massive expenditures made or not made by the state.

That's just a grandstand, and silly.

I'm not a huge Del Rio fan but the idea that the reason the public has absolutely no interest in supporting a team owned by Dan Snyder because of anything Del Rio says/does is completely laughable.

It's a shame that any fan base has to subsidies these multi billionaires. BUF finally has a playoff run or two? Time to put the screws to those fans and then tread water as a franchise for another 30 years.

In a lot of ways the NFL is pretty gross.

I wonder how their relationship going forward will be? Hopefully, it's a done deal and they can focus on football.
i mean Jack has been pretty vocal in the past so his views arent a secret.  My guess is they will be fine.  How the players respond to him is more of a concern to me.

Yes, I remember some similar type things coming up with the Raiders.  I could see more push back from players in this situation simply because of the current national political climate.  Back then it would be easier for players to ignore, but now they may be more inclined speak out and give some sort of  public response to his comments.

I'm sure Rivera's fine came with some communication to his players that it's a done deal and let's get to work on the season. And if not it should have.

It's sad that in a WAS thread there isn't even any hand slapping for retaining their best player, at least until Chase heals. I liked the picks of both Dotson and Brown last season. Thought the Samual signing was a mistake, but overall this might be the deepest WR crew for WAS in a long time.

In other news I find it completely confusing that WAS spends a 2nd rounder to replace Daron Payne because they realistically can't sing all the DLmen they've drafted recently. And then you read this:

"The Athletic's Ben Standig reports that the Commanders have "rebuffed" teams interested in trading for contract-year DT Daron Payne.

Payne is due an $8.5 million salary in the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, but the Commanders haven't prioritized him for an extension. Other teams have approached the Commanders about Payne and might be willing to offer "significant cost in trade compensation and salary on a new deal." A deal that could be worth $17-$18 million annually for Payne. The Commanders drafted Phildarian Mathis in the second round of this year's draft and Payne could be a trade target to monitor in training camp or in-season if Mathis looks ready early. "

WFT WTF?

Can you imagine what it would be like living in a country where there are oligarchs and laws don't exist for you if you have enough money? It must be strange to live in one of those backward countries.

Can you imagine?

Yeah, sounds like they want to keep him and try to resign him?  I guess Mathis gives them a nice 3-Bama DL rotation, but that is going to be a TON of money wrapped up in the front 4.  I do still think they end up 9-8ish this year cause I think Wentz is their best qb since Cousins left.  But the team construct is definitely a head-scratcher.

I'm normally a guy that is fine with pouring as many resources into as possible into OL, DL, and DB.... but at some point it gets ridiculous. People were upset they released Ioaniddis but realistically would have been DT #4 on the depth chart(assuming Mathis was worth being drafted in the 2nd round).

I agree with your optimism at least in part because the Gibson/Robinson/McKissic backfield may also be the deepest RB group I've seen in years, which is a big deal when you have a HC as conservative as Rivera. I'm kind of hoping Robinson/McKissic play more the pure RB roles on the team and they use Gibson more like Deebo Samuel and the defense has to adjust to where he is on the field on a snap-to-snap basis. That's closer to the role I expected him to have coming out of college in the first place.

As a Gibson owner in both of my dynasty leagues, I hope you are right.  Keep him healthier, and get him in space.  McKissic is too good, I was heart-broken when he changed his mind and came back.

Just seem like a "Hey Look! Squirrel!" tactic.

As a franchise they want something in the news other than they stole money from their own season ticket holders and the other owners. They may as well sign Kap. Or sign T.O. to a contract. Or have male cheerleaders on the sidelines. Any news has to be better than the news they have been getting.

It's a shame because on the field this could be their best season in several years. The last time they won 9 games was 2015 and I think they have a real chance of doing that if their defense just plays as well as it did in 2020.
