***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Thread (In-Season) (1 Viewer)

For a team that has so much trouble pass blocking, it seems like they should be going out of their way to run the ball more. Having Griffin run the ball opens up the running game and momentarily freezes the pass rushers. That is how Shanahan got so much mileage out of a pretty weak offensive line.
Their scoring drive yesterday was basically Morris and Helu.
The screen to Helu has seemed to be unstoppable all season....should do that every play.

I will believe it when I see it. If he does start McCoy then it shows that Gruden has some stones and isn't afraid of what the boss will think.

Listen Colt McCoy isn't the answer for this team. But was Todd Collins the answer for the team when they had their fluke playoff run. And no the Skins aren't going to the playoff no matter how many times they will try to convince you on ESPN 980 this week.

That was different with Collins because Campbell got hurt and the team made a playoff run. Griffin isn't hurt and we aren't making the playoffs. Benching him basically means his time here is done.

Word on Skins Twitter is that Colt could be getting the start against the 49ers. If that's true...just wow. This team is a ####### joke.
dear god i hope not. That would officially be the last straw.
I'm done watching Redskins games this year.
I can't watch that San Fran game, gonna be ugly. I'm sure I'll watch at some point later in the season but this Sunday I'm going to the movies or something.

Yeah, he fumbled the one in a previous series. That is why we don't do that every play.

RG3 still the starter. Smart move.

The question is what do they expect of him against the 49ers? Trent Williams is day-to-day with an MCL sprain, but I don't see why you risk him. Though, he's easily our best OL.

Jay: "Rob needs to worry about himself and no one else. It's my job to worry about the rest of the team. He needs to not elaborate as much".

Jay saying Rob had some fundamental flaws. Should of took 3 steps when he took 5. Took 1 step when he should have taken 3. Not moving up in the pocket when he should, moving when he doesn't need to...

Bring back the read option. Let him at least go out on his sword if it is going to be like this. And who knows, we may even start winning football games.

The word I saw on twitter was just unknown people citing unknown reports. When they actually linked something, what they linked had nothing to do with replacing Griffin. Basically it was a bunch of ####, circulated by 1)people who don't know any better and 2)people who don't like Griffin.

I just listened to Gruden's press conference and there's no thought of replacing Griffin.

But hey, what does Gruden know, because twitter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The read option is a gimmick. Like all other gimmicks, it eventually fails. As The Tebow showed, you can beat incompetent teams but you will never win the SB. It would simply be a waste of time if the goal is to win the SB.

What has stopped it more than once this year is when Helu was supposed to chip block before heading out for the screen, Helu whiffed, and the QB got smashed or had to throw it away. In case anyone hasn't noticed Helu is a terrible blocker.

There's too many insider wannabes on Twitter. I got suckered into it.

The press conference was basically nothing. What you're seeing above is only some of what Gruden said about Griffin. He also said some complimentary stuff.

And basically Gruden said nothing's going to change on offense or defense, they have to play hard and eliminate mistakes, etc. etc. etc. same stuff he's said every week. Along with his usual "point out what this player did wrong, and deflect all questions critical of Haslett" crap. Nothing is changing.

He did say Morgan Moses played well.

I actually wonder if Trent Williams is going to want to risk Trent Williams. And I mean nothing against Trent by saying that. But this is a losing team, in disarray, with a rookie HC with no plan except "keep doing what we do" and "call out players", and it seems like the players are checking out. Williams isn't near the beginning of his career, his health matters, and it may matter more to him than playing injured in what might just be a clown show. In other words the injury may take a long time to heal.

I don't think he should play. Gruden said it'll be up to Trent and the trainers if he plays this week. Well he needs to rest up. He's been playing hurt all season. We need him long-term.

And fatness I agree 100% with how Gruden handles things in the media. Why does he feel like he needs to call out a player every press conference? Last week it was Hatcher. This week RG3. Do that #### internally. I'm sure his calling out players publicly is going to wear thin on the locker room sooner rather than later. You don't see any other coaches doing that.

When you listen to Gruden talk he sounds convincingly like he knows what he's talking about.

When you watch Gruden's team play it looks like Gruden has no clue at all about coaching a team.

Really great disparity there.

So it's never too early to start it, but Gruden needs to go.

It's so clear he wants nothing to do with RG3. He bashes players in the media. All from a coach with a sparkling 3-7 record. He calls guys out like he's done something. GTFO Gruden.

holy crap

that's amazing

He's a young guy learning his job. A "work in progress" which seems to be a popular phrase around here. And he's making mistakes, as you can see by his team's performance on the field and by his own performance talking to the press.

But I don't think he needs to go. He just needs to learn his job, which to me would involve:

1. putting a team on the field that plays like an NFL team

2. managing his players better, which can't be done in public view. The players tune out and Gruden looks like a teenager blaming others for the results of his work

3. managing his coaches better, because at least some of them are doing a poor job. That can't be done publicly either, but has to be done.

4. figuring out his own limits, and his own blind spots. Right now he calls offensive plays, obsesses about QB details, and the teams as whole is falling apart. He needs to step back from the micromanaging of QB and offense, and run the damn team.

If he's still doing the same things early next year when they hit their first losing streak, it may be time to say he has to go. But it's way too early now. He's doing a bad job, and his constant player-blaming is just irritating as crap. Some people still think it's good, that he "tells it like it is", but he really has little credibility that makes you think he'd know what he's talking about. He sounds so sure about player evaluation, then his team performs like crap again. Apparently he's not so damn smart or competent, and ought to stop telling us about other's shortcomings when he's failing himself.

Get some wins, coach. Earn some credibility. Stop being such a whiner.

No team, like Seattle, could ever win a Super Bowl running the read option. History has already proved you wrong.

On ESPN 980, Chris Russell strongly stated that Gruden wants to make a QB change. He also said that Gruden would strongly prefer an average QB who runs his system well than a talented QB who runs it poorly.

Sheehan and Levaro both thought that if Griffin is benched, his time in DC is over.

I wish someone would invent a machine (like in total recall) where I could "believe" I'm a life long Packers fan, so I could enjoy watching a good football team every weekend, year in and year out. Its miserable being a Skins fan in your 40s or older. You experienced the wonderful 80s and very early 90, only to be let down the last 2 decades....ughhh
GB was pretty bad in the 70s and 80s.
Oh I know, I mean RIGHT NOW. It must be awesome being a Packers fan today. Or even a Patriots fan the last decade plus. Its just MISERABLE being a Skins fan now. :(

As a 50 year old Eagles fan, I have no sympathy for you. You got to experience one of the greatest coaches of all time in Joe Gibbs. You won 3 superbowls with Joe Theisman, Jay Schroeder/Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien as your starting QB's. The present and near future may be bleak, but suck it up. If you stop rooting for your team just because they are going through a bad stretch, you will no longer be a Redskin fan. You will be a Cowboy fan.

Skins fans were spoiled to great times in the past, and now dying a death of a million paper cuts watching this franchise try to field a team year after year. I do think RG3 needs to play every snap this season, no matter what the score, and either grow into his role as a franchise or play his way out of town. But he HAS to play, no matter what. And I absolutely HATE how we have an amazing RB in Alfred Morris that brings it EVERY day on every play, and is a total class act on and off the field, and yet this is the team he's stuck with. Can you imagine what he'd do in Denver, NE, or GB??

It's the smart move. The guy simple sucks at playing QB.

Whoa. Clueless. They won because they had a dominant defense. It had nothing to do with the read option. They shut down arguably the best QB ever. THAT has NOTHING to do with the read option. The read option was along for the ride. You are out of your league.

So Russel's passer rating of 101 last year ranking 7th among qbs had nothing at all to do with that? The point is you can win with the read option.

They lose with an average defense. Manning carves them up.

Now onto Russ. If it was any part of the reason they won last year, what happened this year? Oh, their defense is not even close to what it was last year.

The fact is you cannot win with the read option unless you have a dominant defense. That means it's just along for the ride.

so what your saying is that you can actually win with the read option.

Chris Russell was slobbering for Kirk Cousins since before preseason. He's become a pretty crummy "source".

There's some good stuff in that 2009 season thread. Here's John Keim's assessment of Bruce Allen.

According to numerous NFL sources, Allen is not considered a strong personnel guy, but rather an excellent administrator -- one who can get along with everybody.

"He'll be great with Dan Snyder as far as dealing with him," one NFL source said.

But he was not responsible for making personnel decisions in Oakland, where Al Davis did that and Jon Gruden had that power in Tampa Bay.
