***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Thread (In-Season) (1 Viewer)

Want to read a bad article? Here you go: http://www.fantasyfootballoverdose.com/eye-on-football/sources-washington-redskins-might-trade-jay-cutler/

There's quite a bit to laugh at.

Jay Cutler might possibly get picked up by Jay Gruden. Although acquiring him will cost a lot of money for the Redskins organization, they might take the risk if Gruden can promise a winning season.
Redskins can offer Cutler different looks and plays in the field. The great offensive mind of Gruden could be the answer in terms of unleashing Cutlers greatest potential.
So stupid that it just might happen.

Well, if it came from "Sources", how could this information be incorrect?

Why is Gruden so candid about only RG3 on this team? Where are his comments on Kirk and Colt?

Because Griffin seems ill-suited for Gruden’s system, the team’s offense should be changed, many observers contend. In a different system, Griffin could resurrect his career, some television analysts suggest. But what magical offense would that be?

“I don’t know what offense they are talking about,” Gruden said. “As far as offenses that I have studied in the National Football League, we all run similar dropback concepts. Not everybody runs the zone read.

“We run the zone read to try to help him out. We run a lot more play-actions and bootlegs than most teams. . . . If you play quarterback in the National Football League, you’re going to have to drop back and throw it.”

My sources say that was funny.

Many of us are assuming that Griffin is done in Washington. Here's an alternative take:

Not sure I buy 100% of this, but an interesting read nonetheless...
I don't buy all of it -- some of it seems a bit like excuse-making. But he makes some of the same points we've made here --- Griffin's confidence is low, the other QB's have been equally bad, the blocking has been terrible but Griffin's the only QB of the 3 who gets blamed for that, Griffin's young and inexpensive, neither of the other QB's is in any way an obvious choice to be a starter, wasting a draft pick this year on a potentially-good QB would just put them behind a bad O-line.

As for the offensive line, it was entertaining to watch Cooley's film session suggest how difficult Griffin made life for his blockers. While there is plenty of value in what Cooley said, the reality is the offensive line as a unit has been poor this season. Even Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams has had a tough season, with both injuries and ineffectiveness. Put on tape of the St. Louis Rams loss. It was just plain bad for Williams and the offensive line. The coaches can't forget that when they analyze why Griffin seems to play scared at times.

Griffin's thrown 3 INT's. So has McCoy. Cousins has thrown 9.

http://www.nfl.com/teams/statistics?team=WAS

I don't recall week after week of criticizing Cousins or McCoy.

Gruden really exposed himself as a bad evaluator of QB's by obviously wanting Cousins over Griffin, and Cousins throwing the ball to the opponents again and again.

Agreed. I'm not trying to make it seem like Griffin has been above the critcizing because he frankly hasn't played all that well this season. But neither have Cousins or McCoy at times and they get a pass from Gruden. Why does he only go after Griffin in the media? It's so obvious he does not like him. If right now I had to choose between Griffin and Gruden, I'd take Griffin.

Good article.

Of course it does not address the elephant in the room. Where does that leave our idiot coach?
Hopefully out the door with our GM and Defensive Coordinator. I'd keep the young guy who's our "Offensive Coordinator" because he is just that in title not actuality with Gruden calling the plays. Of course it would be up to the new regime as to who stays and who leaves but they need a new FO atmosphere and some contractual guarantees that the Owner won't butt in and override/emasculate the coach.

To me, point #3 seems like the most important one. What's the downside in bringing back Griffin? He's cheap and if you move him before next season you take a cap hit anyway. At most you sacrifice the third round pick he might return in an offseason trade. The upside is obvious, no matter how unlikely- you could find out you've got a QB who can get the job done, after all he got the job done before. Hell, they could even let him loose on the ground now that their long-term plans are no longer inextricably tied to him.

The obvious counter point is the soap opera stuff- Jay hates him/he hates Jay, he's a "loner," the media circus will continue, blah blah blah. I think fans and media overestimate that stuff. Football is a business, playing and coaching is a job. People won't refuse to do their jobs just because they don't get along great with a co-worker. And even if I'm wrong, as I said, what's the downside? Another last-place season? Does anyone expect anything else in 2015 regardless of the starting QB? If anything, keeping RGIII will force them to use their high draft picks on a lineman or defensive player instead of Mariota or Winston, neither of whom strike me as Luck-type can't miss prospects.

Agree with all of these. There's too much upside to Griffin to let him sit on the bench the rest of this season. Let him either win or lose the job these last few weeks. If he continues to play poorly, then you have a pretty good idea that he's not the answer under Gruden. But if he plays well, he at least inspires some confidence in him for next season and gives the team a little bit of hope going into the offseason. Just letting him sit around does nothing.

Interesting thought: the only game they were competitive since they bye week was against San Francisco. That was the game started by Griffin and the Gruden has a very run heavy game plan so Griffin would not throw the ball.

Based on this game, might anyone on the coaching staff think that running the ball might make them more competitive?

I am now hoping Griffin starts, they run the ball repeatedly, only letting Griffin throw 15 times, and they win the game. Then, after the game, we can hear Gruden talk about how bad Griffin was, how they had to strip down the offense, and have him mope after a win. It will be Spurrier-like.

They were not competitive in that game. SF kept having turnovers that the inept offense couldn't capitalize on.

In contrast to Gruden's comments I posted earlier about RG3 needing to be a pocket passer.

This is from Gruden when he was hired:

When it comes to the quarterback position, my job is to make him comfortable and productive.

"I'm not going to try to turn RGIII into Andy Dalton or Drew Brees. He isn't them. They're not him. I would be foolish to try to turn RGIII into a pocket passer. It would be foolish. The way he is as a runner, we have to take advantage of that. He strikes fear into defensive coordinators when he runs outside. I'm going to let him be himself."

This year can't end soon enough for you guys.

Do you guys have all of your draft picks next year? O-line biggest priority?
Yup believe we have all of our picks.

OL should be the 1st priority, but knowing how this team drafts, we'll take a LB or DT.
Our pass rush is horrible and will get worse if/when Orakpo leaves (Worse than when he was in earlier in the year). It wouldn't be the worst thing to improve our defense, and we could still go O-line in the 2nd round.

Really we need pass rushers, oline, and secondary help, not necessarily in that order. The first 4 rounds should be OLB, OT, OG or C, and CB or S. Then just double up on all of those in the later rounds. If we could trade back to around pick 10 and get a solid Offensive lineman, and someone's first round pick from next year, I would do that in a heartbeat.

I am not in here hating, you guys know I like to talk Football. It's obvious your team is a bit of a mess right now. Here is my take as a total outsider looking in, feel free to be critical of my posting/ideas. Here is what I would do if I was your Owner.

Here we go:

-It starts at the top with the Executives. Are changes needed? Looks like it to me. The team has to decide what kind of team it wants to be. Running/passing/ or a defensive powerhouse. When I think about Washington, I think about the Hogs and gritty players at QB and on defense. So step one is decide on the identity and start to create your plan to make it happen.

-Determine if the coach fit this plan? No, Gruden is a passing Coach who was supposed to help RG3's development. Fire Gruden and hire a Defensive Mind to lead your team. This person will be more apt to embrace establishing a run first offense and support and coach up a defensive group that needs some work.

-QB position. Blow it up boys. Trade RG3 for a pick. I am not sure what his worth is, but likely a 2nd or 3rd round maybe? Correct me here if I am off based on the value. Bring in a guy like Hoyer for a couple of years while you build your Offensive Line.

-Draft. Build from the lines out. I would personally start with the O-line. They tend to have the longest careers and you are building from almost nothing aside from a few defensive guys. This is important in building a team imo. You can't start with a QB, if you have no support. It makes no sense to draft Wr's, Guards, or Safeties. Offensive Tackles and a Center is where you start. When you have your book ends and a center, then you look for a franchise QB.

-Be disciplined. No more trading up in drafts for splash players. No more big Free Agent signings and hurting your cap.

Anyways, these are my thoughts on you guys. If I was a Skins fan, this is what I am hoping for.

Gruden says they don't need to see anymore RG3 to figure out what he can or can't do #Redskins

Redskins placed OT Morgan Moses on injured reserve with a Lisfranc injury, ending his season.

Moses, the 66th pick in May's draft, played 131 offensive snaps as a rookie, making one start at left tackle in Week 12. He gave up two sacks that day. Moses may have a future at right tackle, but was unable to unseat Tyler Polumbus on the right side in year one. Lisfranc injuries have proven to be trick in the past.

it isn't a question of Gruden seeing "what he can or can't do". It is more to show other people (specifically Snyder and Bruce Allen) what he can or can't do. Listen winning isn't important unless you are one of those "we win our last 3 games in a row we will have momentum to make a run in 2015" people.

I have no problem with starting RG3 because then it will make crystal clear whatever the decision is in the offseason. None of this "well he only played 3 games" nonsense

Agreed. I couldn't give 2 ####s if we win out right now. Actually, I'd be kinda annoyed since we'd lose draft position.

There is no downside in starting RG3 these last 3 games. Zero. Zippy. Nada. There is a ton of upsdie in starting him these last 3 games. Jay doesn't understand that.

I don't know if I consider it an "upside". I look at it this way. if he starts three games and stinks then it further prove that Synder runs the team if Super bob stays and Gruden leaves or it proves that he is finished when RG3 leaves the team. if he starts three games and plays great or above average then it further proves that Gruden is the real problem with the offense and can justify getting rid of him

Yeah I guess upside may not explain the whole point, but, there's certainly more of a reason to give RG3 these last 3 games than giving McCoy the last 3 games.

For the most part this is correct, we need to do a lot of this to repair our team. The one thing I would change is don't trade RGIII and don't get Hoyer. We already have Hoyer's Redskins counterpart in Colt McCoy.

If we traded RGIII at best we could hope for a 3rd round pick, but more importantly, the other options just aren't good enough to try and move on. The 2 leading QBs expected to be in the draft aren't sure things, there aren't any big QB free agents, and an RG3 trade wouldn't save us very much cap space. Not to mention I still hold out hope that a different coach could somehow teach him to read NFL defenses and increase his confidence.

We desperately need to increase the talent along our offensive line and could do so with high draft picks (like the Steelers who currently have a very good offensive line). We also need to increase the ability of our team to pass rush. Our secondary is horrible but if they only have to cover for 2-3 seconds we have a much better shot of keeping QBs contained.

The only place we have talent on our team is WR, Kerrigan, and Trent Williams. It's a rough start and we need Snyder to hire a new GM who hires a new coach. Then we need Snyder to walk away and just watch for at least 3-5 years in order for the GM and Coach (who hopefully are on the same page) to rebuild the team from the ground up. See Seattle who revamped their Defense to lead the team, St. Louis who did the same and is finally turning around, the Steelers who improved their team by getting offensive weapons to cover a bad D, and Arizona who used a good Defense to reach 9-1 this season.

I think the only thing playing Griffin the last 3 games will prove is how crappy Griffin looks in Gruden's water down offense.

If Griffin had a coach who believed in him and called plays that he would good at running, maybe the results would be different.

I am not defending Griffin. At 3-10 speeding to 3-13, there is plenty of blame to go around.

One thing is clear, if Gruden stays, Griffin won't be the starter next year.

Well if that doesn't get him fired so he can take a college job, he might as well start refusing to use the term "Redskins" in the post-game press conference.

The public relations staff just needs to execute. If the media coverage isn't enough to motivate them to do well, we need a new public relations staff.

If Gruden returns next year who wants to go find a new favorite team with me? (life long fan and been watching the Skins since the early 80s) :bag:

Go Nats. Pitchers and catchers report in a little over 2 months.
Wizards are playing well too.

Truly sad that there is an entire generation of people living in the DMV that have never seen the Skins win consistently. 2012 looks more like a fluke everyday.

I forget who on here suggested it, but this is pointing to something happening during the bye week.

Gruden put rg3 out to dry in the next game and next post game press conference. The blatant bashing of Griffin...way too much for a coach to put in the media. Plus sticking by McCoy? He really hasn't done anything to justify starting. Something went down between coach and player.

Gruden is fighting to get canned.

I think Snyder will fire them all. Allen. Gruden. Haslett.

I am praying for this at this point. And hopefully Snyder cans himself too.

I bet Gruden gets a job elsewhere next year and makes Snyder look like the fool he is.
Why do you believe that will happen? Gruden has been HORRIBLE this year, no matter who was playing QB. He hasn't gotten the team to respond to anything, he's been a clown in his pressers, what makes you think he'll suddenly be good elsewhere? The more I think about it, he can thank AJ Green for this contract he got.
