***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Thread (In-Season) (2 Viewers)

So would it be out of line to suggest Gruden started an injured player (McCoy) mainly because he refuses to start Griffin?
Nope not at all. In fact, that right there is enough to fire him. He would rather risk McCoy's career than to play Griffin.
If I was a reporter covering this team I'd be all over that. From an outsider's perspective that's sure what it looks like to me.
The reporters seem to give Gruden a pass during his press conferences and I really don't understand why. He needs to be held accountable for all his failures this season.

I still can't believe that Gruden did not know Moss was ejected until Siragusa told him coming out for the second half.
“I didn’t even know they’d thrown [Moss] out of the game until I came out for the second half,” Gruden said. The four yellow flags thrown in the air and the multiple officials giving him the heave-ho tipped off the 77,648 in attendance. But a whole coaching staff either missed it or didn’t tell the head coach.

Gruden's the least-aware head coach I've ever seen. He can tell you everything Robert Griffin did wrong with his feet, his eyes, his decisions. But more than that? No. He can't see how the defense is stopping him and come up with a way to adjust. He can't tell you why his team does what it does week after week. He doesn't know when a player's been kicked out.

He's a QB micromanager, nothing more.

For some reason or another.

We'll have to watch the films to figure out why.

It's pretty obvious he did just that. And then had the injured player trot out to talk to the press and say why it was OK, while he was in obvious pain.

Don't forget that he can identify anything RG3 did wrong immediatley following the game, but everyone else, he needs to go watch the tape.

Steinberg with a pretty good takedown on the end of the game: The Redskins and Jay Gruden gave up at the end of the Giants game and it was weird and sad

“Can’t remember the last time I saw a team down 11 pts with 1:30+ in the game quit,” wrote Kevin Sheehan, the host of the Redskins Radio Network’s pre-game show, on his blog. “Gruden threw in the towel. I thought it was disgraceful.”

Well, there’s a reason Sheehan can’t remember it: because it almost never happens. The Redskins on Sunday became the first NFL team since 2011 to punt after getting the ball back with less than three minutes remaining while trailing by two possessions. (In other words, while trailing by between 9 and 16 points.)

In fact, only four times this season has a team trailing by two possessions received the ball with less than five minutes left and wound up punting. Two of those times were recorded by the Redskins on Sunday.

So Grudes is in a tough spot here.

If he keeps playing Griffin and Griffin plays well, then people will wonder why the hell he gave up on him so early and didn't allow him to keep playing to get right.

If he keeps playing Griffin and the team keeps losing, it doesn't help his case for coming back next year after a 3-13 season.

Kind of a no win situation for him. Though, he brought it upon himself.

From cbssportsline:

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Monday the plan is for Robert Griffin III to start at quarterback Saturday against the Eagles.

Griffin replaced Colt McCoy in Sunday's game against the Giants after McCoy aggravated a neck injury on the opening drive. Gruden said McCoy will continue to be monitored by doctors during the week.

Gruden added the team will try to build the offense around Griffin's strengths. He said it's important for the run game to be effective in order for Griffin to be productive.

"It's important for our offense to rally around him, and to play well around him, also," Gruden said. "Moving forward, this is Robert's team right now."

----------------------

Gruden sounds like Griffin's biggest supporter all of a sudden. "Moving forward, this is Robert's team right now."

I watched the presser. Gruden looked really defeated at the beginning but sort of came to life as he went on. I don't know if there was a meeting after the game or not, but he almost seemed more relaxed then in the past. Interesting to see.

Perhaps he's resigned himself to his fate?

Also, I like how he's just saying now that they'll design an offense around RGIII's skills....

It looks like it never dawned on him to build the offense around his strengths. And it looks like Gruden expects his offense to flourish without an effective running game. But Griffin is so handicapped, he needs an effective running game.

I mentioned this earlier. Gruden has coached himself into a no-win situation.

His last grasp was to have Colt McCoy do a Rich Gannon, go from journeyman QB to solid starter, and show everyone that his offense is awesome and Griffin was the problem.

I think more people than ever think Gruden's offense is a big part of the problem.

When he arrived, he said he would be stupid to try and make Griffin somebody he isn't.

Duh.

The run game is important for any QB's success, not just Griffin. It's as though Gruden thinks that using the run game, especially in second halves, is a crutch and is unwanted. I don't think he understands a damn thing about offensive football. And taking 13 games to understand the needs of the team he agreed to coach is inexcusable.

But all that will be out the window against Philly as soon as they're behind by more than 7. And it'll be pass, pass, sack, pass, pass, sack.

The Redskins had 135 yards in penalties, their most in a game since a Week 14 loss at Philadelphia in 2004. ...

Washington ranks 27th in number of penalties this season. Before you start screaming about well-coached teams and penalties, know this: New England, Denver and Seattle all have committed more. So, too, has Buffalo. So of the five teams with more penalties than the Redskins, four have winning records and three are considered legitimate Super Bowl contenders. The difference is, Washington has little margin for error. ...

Here’s another one to chew on: Of the 10 teams with the fewest amount of penalties this season, only three have winning records (Kansas City, Green Bay, Arizona). ...

Ah, but here’s the rub: The three power teams behind Washington in number of penalties also rank among the top five when it comes to fewest turnovers. The Redskins, meanwhile, are 24th in that category. So they not only commit a lot of penalties, they turn the ball over a lot. ...

Add it all up: 3-11. The Redskins are a bad team that makes mistakes. They’re the ugly girl (or guy) with a bad personality. ...

Is anyone else watching the Monday night game? Jon Gruden is repeatedly taking apart Jay Cutler's throwing mechanics, decisions, footwork, etc. He's been doing it since the first quarter.

Runs in the family I guess. Them Grudens sure know how to criticize QB's they don't like.

I'm not surprised you're questioning this. :lmao:

One thing re: Gruden coming back, has anyone else reported it aside from Diana? She's been fed wrong info in the past, so just wondering if this is 100% accurate.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/redskins-secondary-unimpressed-by-odell-beckham-jr--s-latest-feat-163705007.html

Evidently the Washington secondary weren't impressed with Odell Beckam, Jr.

"He's a good player," Amerson told NJ.com. "I'm not saying he's not. But it's not really that difficult. He just sat down in zones and he catches the ball — he's very good at that. They threw him a lot of balls, so of course he has a lot of yards, but I wouldn't say he was difficult to cover. I wouldn't say that."

Yeah, because it's not like Beckham is known for making difficult catches or anything.

Maybe it wasn't all that difficult for Amerson since fellow corner Bashaud Breeland actually drew Beckham's assignment for much of the afternoon, racking up four penalties for 70 yards in the process.

"He made some plays. I made some plays," the Redskins rookie corner told Washington Post columnist Thomas Boswell. Pressed on whether he would've done anything differently in retrospect or hoped to get some help, Breeland added, "Not really," and, "Are you saying I need help? I don't need any help."

Seriously?

OK, Amerson: they threw a lot to him so he burned us a lot...it's not that hard. I guess it's not too hard when you are going against a secondary that can't cover. But you know, it does happen in the NFL David that players are thrown to and they don't beat the secondary every time.

Then Breeland: OK, he made some plays and you made some plays. Three of his plays were touchdowns. What were your big plays? Also, I can see why you don't need help...I mean, you have arrived and all.

SHM...this team needs a SERIOUS attitude adjustment!

Based on the Monday night game, I clearly expect the Redskins to trade for Jay Cutler. We'll probably give the Bears Robert Griffin and 2 number one picks for Cutler. That's generally how we work these things.

As bad as both Grudens were at playing QB themselves, maybe they figure all the crap they took from coaches is the way it's supposed to be.

@NBCdianna: Jay Gruden was told he will return next season per sources. More on News4 at 6. #Redskins
Ugh...
I posted before the most likely scenario is that Allen, Gruden, and Haslett are all back next season.

Gruden has had a brutal few weeks since then. Maybe he will fail in getting himself fired. A fitting end to a 3-13 season since he has failed at so much.
I suppose it's also possible that Gruden could have got assurances from someone who will also be let go. No one should be safe in that front office.

Here's Dianna's tweets from yesterday:

Asked if Redskins GM Bruce Allen or Dan Snyder have definitely told Jay Gruden if he'll be back next year... Gruden says No.

Dianna Marie Russini @NBCdiannahttps://twitter.com/NBCdianna · 16h16 hours ago
Gruden says he hasn't been told his job is safe. Why wouldn't Allen or Snyder provide that clarity if they want him back. Takes 2 minutes.

Telling Gruden he is safe provides clarity in locker room and with coaches. There is no downside. #Redskins

Jay Gruden told Redskins media he hasn't been assured his job is safe by Owner/GM but sources say "he's been told he'll return next season"

Looks like both Grudens have jobs next year “@alexmarvez: Jon Gruden has signed a contract extension with ESPN through 2021 #Redskins

Looks like she was on a mission to get an answer on Gruden's status for next season. Wonder if someone just fed her info to get her away?

Heard she's been fed misinformation in the past, wouldn't be too surprised if it happened here. Don't know why Gruden wouldn't say if his job was secure so the "sources" sound sketchy. It's hard to believe in a coach who quits before the game is over.

Agreed. If Gruden had met with Bruce/Dan and they said he was safe, why would he lie about that? Unless they met with him after the presser? I don't know.

But yeah, Dianna has been misled by sources already this season. Just seems strange that none of the local reporters have said anything similar.

Hang 10 is right. Getting an assurance from Allen that he is safe doesn't necessarily mean they are both safe.

It all comes down to if Danny Boy keeps Allen. Unless Allen is fired, I think Gruden is safe. I can't see ditching a coach and friend after one season unless I thought they were provided the talent to succeed, which is not the case. Also don't think the owner would part with $20m unless they were convinced there is a better GM / Coach tandem willing to come here. There may be, I just don't know that aspect of the NFL well enough to say.

Just to note, I did not say this report makes everyone safe. But the most likely scenario is that all three will be back. And this report increases the chances that Gruden will be back.

I could see them bringing in a new DC and moving Haslett to a higher position.

I could see them bringing in a QB coach to take some responsibility off Gruden's plate.

And I could see them bring in another person in the front office (like Smith) to help with talent evaluation.

I really don't see how they could possibly justify bringing Haslett back in any capacity.

The possibility of the Redskins being a last place team AGAIN next season is extremely high. I'm not sure how you bring everyone back and avoid a complete fan revolt at the first sign of struggle.

Agreed. IF Gruden is indeed back next season, does anyone really expect us to improve that much next season?

And if they bring back Haslett, the back lash is going to be awful for Snyder.

I would love it if thay

I would like Smith in the GM job. Not so much because I like Smith. But because it would show a personnel man is in that role, rather than a team president. Also, AJ Smith would not hide in the background and leave his coach and players out to dry like Allen has. He would do press conferences and answer questions like most GMs. Gruden, for all his faults, is having to take too much of the flak for this team's poor performance. A good GM would have been willing to step up and take some of the heat from the media. Allen....crickets.

Snyder once said his biggest mistake when he bought this team was firing Charlie Casserly. He hasn't found even close to a Charlie Casserly quality GM since. Not even close. AJ Smith ain't perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/16/jay-gruden-gives-lukewarm-assessment-of-desean-praises-maclin/

Washington receiver DeSean Jacksonrecently said he doesn’t miss Philadelphia. Next year at this time, maybe Jackson will be saying he doesn’t miss Washington.

Via Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, Washington coach Jay Gruden gave a lukewarm-at-best assessment of Jackson during a Tuesday conference call with the Philadelphia media.

“He’s a very good wide receiver but . . . the last couple weeks he’s been dealing with an injury and he hasn’t been quite the same,” Gruden said. “I’m a ‘what-have-you-done-for-me-lately’ kind of guy and lately we haven’t seen the DeSean we need to see.”

In contrast, Gruden praised Jackson’s former teammate in Philadelphia, Jeremy Maclin.

“He’s a consistent pro, man,” Gruden said. “I love the way he plays, his approach to the football game. . . . He’s tough and it seems like whenever Philly needs a big play, third down and long or they’re trailing, Maclin seems to always show up.

“Type of guy you want. Accountable guys that when the game’s on the line they have no problem making the play, and Jeremy’s done that.”

That last part — “type of guy you want” — comes a little close to tampering, given that Maclin will be a free agent after the season. Maybe he’s precisely the type of guy Gruden wants, and maybe Jackson is precisely the type of guy Gruden has decided he doesn’t want.

So now he's calling out Jackson? Are you trying to alienate your entire roster? What an idiot.

God I hate Gruden. Desean is one of about six players on this entire damn roster who gives a #### about winning. And he IS the only actual playmaker we have. He's been the only bright spot this season.

If this were any normal franchise, I would bet heavily Gruden is a goner. He is beyond terrible and every next move he makes, every next sentence he blurts just makes it worse and worse. He should be fired regardless of what they do with RGIII.

But that's the Redskins.

My bold prediction: The roster actually rallies behind RGIII in the last two weeks. RGIII finishes the season with two strong performances and sets up a most entertaining off-season fight between Allen/Gruden and RGIII and a team that has no respect for its coach. Final outcome: Snyder fires both Allen and Gruden; hires Harbaugh.

Do we have the biggest idiot of a coach or the biggest idiot of a coach?

Robert Griffin III - QB - Redskins
Speaking Tuesday, coach Jay Gruden said it's important for the Redskins to get an early lead in Saturday's game against the Eagles so they can limit Robert Griffin III's dropbacks and reading of the defense.
Gruden might as well have just come out and said he thinks RGIII stinks. Gruden also said Griffin needs to "get up quicker," and "avoid awkward hits and falls." He wants RGIII to be "more savvy." Gruden hates the way RGIII plays quarterback, and he's making sure he gets it on the public record before the offseason. Grudes has supposedly been told he'll be back for 2015, so it's seeming safer and safer to assume Griffin is a goner in Washington.

I don't get it.
