Actually I kind of like Price when he talks baseball..it is just when he gets stuck on the same lines over and over again that he wears me out. DDs daughter played in the same VB club as my daughter. I used to see him at VB tourneys in the winter all the time a few years back...the guy is the same as he is on the radio and loves talking baseball.

But I do love listening to them on the radio. The way baseball was meant to be if you were not actually there. I am truly blessed to only have had a few down years that weren't that bad at all that transitioned Ernie to DD.

4 Big Mans and two Buggy Whips and one Half Buggy Whip in the first inning alone today. I never really noticed the "Buggy Whip" before DD mentioned it..now I hear it all the time.

 
The Detroit Tigers have signed left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarez to a minor-league contract, according to James Schmehl of MLive.com. Alvarez spent the 2012 season recovering from surgery on his left shoulder, which he had to repair a torn labrum. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in early May.

Alvarez spent the past three season in the Miami Marlins system, after being traded there by the Red Sox in 2009. Alvarez is a two-time winner of the best changeup in the Marlins' system, and is 47-38 with a 3.62 ERA in 154 minor league games.

Pretty decent numbers in his minor league career, lots of walks but looks like the raw talent is there. Tigers signed him for organizational depth and because they needed a lefty, but his success at Toledo this season has been an interesting organizational development.

I'm a big Kelly fan, he is very clutch. Doesn't mean he should be playing against righties every day though.

Great effort by Alvarez today, some comfort in having a guy like that as our #6. Also funny how I don't get stressed in the 9th when Benoit gives up a double, because I know he's going to preserve a three run lead. Nice to get the sweep, I just wrote off today as a loss.

Six on the road vs the Royals and Twins, a tough ten at home (Orioles, Red Sox, Angels) and then an 11 game road trip. I think I'd be pretty happy with a 15-12 stretch there but this is definitely a challenging part of the schedule.

After crizicizing Prince the other day, I was pleased to see his clutch bases-loaded hit yesterday. Just before that, I had seen stats in the paper on the top guys with the bases loaded and Prince was on the list - again, before his 3-RBI double yesterday.

The Chicago Trib also recently listed the top all-time K/BB ratios for each team. Fister (5.5/1) is on a pace that would set the Detroit record.

Luckily that stat doesn't include HBPs, otherwise that ratio would look a little more normal. Adam Wainwright must have a ridiculous K/BB ratio right now.

 
Yesterday during the recap DD said something about Don Kelly..Price responded..."I am not suprised...Don Kelly is one terrific baseball player" Lets just say he had a big hit.

This is when we usually get complacent, so I'll be happy as long as we keep coming out fighting, regardless of outcome. See if this team responds differently with Torii and Victor in their ear. If we do then I have zero worries about the division and will feel even better about our chances come October.

This

Tough part of the schedule here but if they can win four of six this week you'd think a home cruise control mode would be less likely. Especially considering the Red Sox and Orioles are coming in.

 
I am not sure I am happy the rest of the division sucks or not. Tigers seem to need someone to push them. But as long at they can peak at the end of the season all will be well. Tigers need to be thinking about the bullpen help near the trade deadline.

 
This morning's stats in the paper showed the data for starting pitchers/relief pitchers. I was interested to see that while our starters have the fourth best ERA (and a 31-16 record), the bullpen is actually middle of the pack with ERA ...but virtually the worst record (4-11). Does that mean the pen has been a bit unlucky? They don't give up a lot of runs ...just enough to lose games. It gets back to the team's poor record in close games. We find a way to clean that up and we'll be in great shape.

It often means the Tigers aren't scoring enough ####### runs IMO. Fister is completely getting screwed over this year, not sure what else he can do.

This. Way too many losses where the tigers score 3 runs or less. Score even 4-5 runs a game and almost every game becomes a win for this team.

So true. The % of quality starts is about 75% (held down a bit by Porcello).

 
Wow, Dan Dickerson with a nugget I've never heard before. They were talking about the last Tigers pitcher to start 9-0, that was Doyle Alexander. Anyway the Braves asked for one of two pitchers in that trade, Steve Searcy or Smoltz. Jim Campbell dealt Smoltz who had a 6 ERA at the time at AA because Searcy was closer to the bigs. Obviously that's the biggest hindsight Tigers trade in my lifetime, but that's a bad beat more than anything.

Valverde was at 91/92 to first three batters and now he's throwing 95, WTMF?

Umpire bailed him out, that call on Butler was atrocious and it should have been two on and no one out. I'll take it but they stranded 10 runners and they probably deserved to lose that one.

Those substitutions worked out great! Good thing they won that after stranding 7 over the final three innings ...at least VMart got one run home. Max - wow, 9-0.

Is Valverde capable of pitching without drama? I honestly don't think so. It's like he needs to have his back to the wall.

Him completely unable/unwilling to hold a baserunner at first means a single or walk is a double. That can't go on, that is pretty much like a high school pitcher. Last night the Butler at bat got his adrenaline going I guess, him going from 91 to 95 was strange.

 
Verlander over 100 through 6 innings. I'm sure he will want to push for more, but with a 2-0 lead, this might be a good time to give 2-3 innings to Smyly.

Then Cabrera makes an error on an easy grounder and Fielder drops the pickoff attempt where they had the guy dead in the water. lol

 
That looked like the White Sox loss last night, completely unexpected and awful in every way.

Go with Benoit, send Valverde to the independent league. Giving up a homer to Markakis or Singleton is one thing, giving one up to Lorenzo ####### Cain is quite another especially on an 0-2 count. Rondon is not the answer, still walking too many guys. He may be ready to close next year or maybe even later this year, but not now. I wish he was the answer, he has the stuff and I think promoting him to pitch as a bridge again should happen soon.

Tigers relievers now 4-12 which is pretty bad and again only muster two runs. Can't move baserunners over, stranding too many guys and generally not putting hits together at all.

Valverde has to go though before he divides the clubhouse with those who support him, and those who don't. I was fine giving him another shot but he's just going to do this again, and probably one or two times after that. You can't use him in the 8th, you can't use him to face one batter and you can't use him with runners on base. So? Don't use him, let him go and call the experiment a wash for the 9 saves he got in 12 chances. I'd rather lose with Rondon or Smyly or Greco out there to be honest, at least I know there is hope. With Valverde there is none, he's a black hole of inspiration.

 
So I'm headed off to Minnesota this weekend for an annual Tiger trip we do. Who will be the closer?

Its just a matter of time before ... Jessie Crain is?

 
I would almost consider giving Smyly the closer role. He has been outstanding. The downside may be that Smyly has a chance at being a really good starter.
