Thought it would be fun to create one thread to log all potentitial free agency/trade rumors. Add what you are hearing:

Quarterbacks

Drew Brees - Franchised by Chargers - 1/11: In an AP Article, Brees responds to the rumors that he'll be slapped with the franchise tag and be forced to sign a one year deal: "I think the organization knows how I feel. I think I've made that known that I want to be here and I want a long-term contract," the Pro Bowl QB said Monday after the Chargers held their final team meeting. "It's up to them to decide what they want to do." 2/10: The Union-Tribune reports that Brees will in fact be hit with the franchise tag in a week. 2/14: San Diego Chargers QB Drew Brees, during an interview at the Pro Bowl, said he wants to remain a member of the Chargers not only in 2005, but for the remainder of his career. Brees, who is likely to be tagged as the team's "franchise" player due to being an unrestricted free agent, said he will do everything in his power to remain with the team.

Brad Johnson - Likely will be released by the Bucs this offseason. 1/24: From PFW Whispers, after refuting Moss to Arizona rumors as "ridiculous", PFW goes on to saw "the possibility that Arizona might go after QB Brad Johnson in free agency is a different story altogether." 2/7: Joe Gambonrano speculates in an azcentral.com article that the Cards might pursue Johnson. 2/10: An article on PewterReport.com states that "The Arizona Cardinals recently expressed interest in signing Johnson should he be released, but Tampa Bay is hoping a couple of more teams show enough interest to force a team to trade for the veteran quarterback, just as Jacksonville did with Mark Brunell during the 2004 offseason, although Johnson's large contract may prohibit that from happening." 2/23: QB Brad Johnson, who was benched for the Bucs final 12 games last season, was told by general manager Bruce Allen the team has no immediate plans to release him. "They've stated to me that when you look at who's out there (in free agency), Brad looks pretty good," Johnson's agent, Phil Williams, said. "I take it to mean that they're not going to let him go today. 2/25: The St. Petersburg Times, reports that Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen hinted that veteran QB Brad Johnson could suit up for the club next season despite his request to be released this offseason. "Brad Johnson will be a valuable player for some team in the league, and it might be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Allen said. "I understand Brad's desire to hopefully get a starting job, and you expect that out of him." Johnson has a high cap figure over the next two seasons and he is expected to be cut soon.

Kurt Warner - 12/29: Warner stated, "I am not going to be content being a backup, that's just the bottom line." Chicago was rumored to be his most likely destination. 2/6: The Arizona Republic reports that the Cardinals have told Kurt Warner that they have no interest in him. 2/12: Curt Sylvester, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci acknowledged that New York Giants QB Kurt Warner, who is expected to be released in March, has expressed interest in joining the Lions and competing for the starting job. "His agent sent us -- as he did a lot of teams -- the tapes of Kurt, and they're looking for a new home," Mariucci said. 2/21: Per an Inquirer article, "After a brutal season in New York in which he was supplanted by rookie Eli Manning, Warner said in December that he would not return to the Giants, and wanted to be a starter in the league. The Bears need someone. They gambled on the unproven Quinn last offseason, then paid the price when Rex Grossman went down with a season-ending knee injury early in the year."

Drew Bledsoe - Released By Bills, Agrees to terms with Cowboys = 1/26: According to a Buffalo News article, The Bills are strongly considering J.P. Losman as their starting QB in '05, and Drew Bledsoe could wind up out of town as a result. After reviewing the 2004 campaign, the team thinks it must give Losman a strong chance to start in what will be his second season. That means Bledsoe is going to have to be willing to compete for, and possibly lose, the job. 2/8: The Arizona Republic reports the Arizona Cardinals would not be interested in QB Drew Bledsoe (Bills) should he be released by the Buffalo Bills this offseason. The Cardinals believe Bledsoe's best days are behind him. 2/11: Per Len Pasquerelli, "it is believed that Buffalo officials have apprised Drew Bledsoe of the plan to elevate [Losman] to the top of the depth chart and are giving [bledsoe] some time to consider the ramifications of the move, and to determine if he wants to return to the Bills as the backup." 2/13: Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports the Buffalo Bills are expected to release veteran QB Drew Bledsoe, possibly by the end of this month, as the club plans to give 2004 first-round draft pick QB J.P. Losman the starting job in 2005, according to several league sources. The Bills would save $2.2 million in salary cap space by releasing Bledsoe, but the quarterback would still count $4.3 million in salary cap space, which is the amount of amortized bonus money left on the Bills' books as a result of a bonus Bledsoe received in May. 2/16: The Bills are expected to announce they will be releasing Bledsoe today. 2/16: The Star Telegram mentions Dallas a possible destination for Bledsoe. 2/21: Per the Inquirer, "If he is willing to accept a short-term deal, Drew Bledsoe could become a Cowboy this week. Jerry Jones wants another Drew - Drew Henson - to emerge as the Cowboys' starter in 2005, but Bill Parcells is wary. Jones conceded Thursday that Dallas needs a veteran to join Henson and Tony Romo, and Parcells, who coached Bledsoe for four years in New England, is a fan. The sticking point, however, could be length of contract." 2/22: Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports the Detroit Lions do not appear interested in pursuing free agent QB Drew Bledsoe (Bills), who has been given his walking papers by the Buffalo Bills. 2/23: Bledsoe agrees to terms with the cowboys.

Brian Griese - 1/14: Gruden already has stated that he wants Griese back, but Griese has a huge cap number for 05. Griese's agent, Ralph Cindrich, said Wednesday he has submitted his first contract proposal to the Bucs, who are trying to rework the quarterback's deal to lower his 2005 salary cap number. Griese's current contract carries a 2005 cap figure of $8.3 million. The Bucs are looking to lower that number significantly, and an ESPN report suggests they want to do it soon. 2/22: Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports the Detroit Lions could be interested in Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Brian Griese if he is released by the Buccaneers. Griese played college football at the University of Michigan. 2/25: Brian Griese's agent, Ralph Cindrich, arrived Thursday and will meet today with Bucs general manager Bruce Allen. Tampa Bay officials believe Griese, who could become a free agent Tuesday when the Bucs owe him a $6-million roster bonus, might find a suitor in San Francisco and Detroit, especially if former Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia does not sign with the Lions.

Joey Harrington - 1/12: Reports circulated that the Lions were leaning toward releasing Harrington. The rumor was the Mariucci wanted to cut Harrington, while Millen wanted to keep him. 1/13: The Lions responded to the rumors by releasing a statement that read ""We have absolutely no intention of releasing Joey Harrington, and there has been no organizational discussion about cutting Joey. Joey had his best season this past year and we firmly believe that he will continue to improve We consider the report baseless and untrue."

Matt Hasselbeck - Signs long term deal with Seahawks - An unrestricted free agent. 1/12: Hasselbeck said that he expects to be back with the team, ""I really thought (signing a new contract) would be done during the season. Mostly I say that just because I'm pretty reasonable." 2/16: Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports with the Seattle Seahawks reaching a new deal with OT Walter Jones this week, the club has now turned its attention toward re-signing free agent-to-be QB Matt Hasselbeck. The team has the option of designating Hasselbeck their franchise player if a new deal is not worked out before the start of free agency in March. 2/21: The News-Tribune reports QB Matt Hasselbeck will own the Seattle Seahawks’ franchise-player label if both he and Shaun Alexander remain unsigned Tuesday. The Seahawks have informed Hasselbeck of their decision to limit his free agent options if the sides fail to reach a long-term agreement by the looming franchise-player deadline. 2/22: The Seattle Times, citing sources close to negotiations, reported that the team will hold a press conference Tuesday to announce the signing of Hasselbeck to a long term deal.

Gus Ferotte - 1/21: The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports Frerotte is looking for a starting quarterback position but will come back to the Vikings under the right terms. 1/23: The Pioneer Press speculates "Don't be surprised if Vikings free-agent backup quarterback Gus Frerotte gets an opportunity with free-agent teammate DT Chris Hovan to join Denny Green's Arizona Cardinals." 1/31: A Miami Herald Article speculates that Ferotte could end up in Miami.

Jay Fiedler - 1/24: Fox Sports reports that "Feeley has been given the message that he will go into the offseason as the starting quarterback." This continues speculation that Fielder will not be back. 2/14: The Browns officially release Garcia. 2/22: Per the BenMaller.com email, "Dolphins QB Jay Fiedler, a Long Island native expected to be released, has told friends he is interested in joining the Jets as Chad Pennington's backup." 2/23: The Dolphins release Fiedler. 2/23: Per the BenMaller.com email, "QB Jay Fiedler is expected to speak with the Jets, Giants, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Chicago and Oakland when the Dolphins release him shortly." 2/25: The St. Petersburg Times, reports the Buccaneers are expected to express interest in free agent Fiedler who was released earlier this week by the Miami Dolphins. 2/25: Jets are interested in signing QB Jay Fiedler, who was released by the Dolphins. Fiedler, who grew up in Oceanside, N.Y., about 15 miles from Jets camp at Hofstra, has already said he'd be interesting in becoming Chad Pennington's backup.

Jeff Garcia - released by Browns - Rumors are that he won't be back with the Browns. 2/7: Joe Gambonrano speculates in an azcentral.com article that the Cards might Garcia. 2/8: A story on BayArea.com indicates that Garcia would be interested in returning to the Niners. 2/16: Cardinals GM is quoted in the East Valley Tribune on the Cards interest in Garcia: "We’re keeping the door open." 2/16: The

Tampa Tribune reports that the Bucs might have interest in Garcia if they can't work out a long term deal with Brian Griese. 2/21: From the BenMaller.com email: "Don't be surprised if former Cleveland Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia suits up for the Detroit Lions in 2005. Don't be angry, either. Garcia is Lions coach Steve Mariucci's security blanket. Garcia understands what Mariucci expects from his quarterback. Garcia would be more comfortable running Detroit's West Coast offense than, say, Kurt Warner, another free agent who would also look good wearing the Lions' Honolulu blue and silver." 2/21: Per the Inquirer, "If he refuses to renegotiate his contract, Griese could be gone. Since Tampa Bay isn't inclined to make Chris Simms the starter, it probably will make a run at Garcia." 2/22: Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports free agent QB Jeff Garcia (Browns) is certain to look at the Detroit Lions as a possible new home following his release by the Cleveland Browns. Garcia was a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in San Francisco under then 49ers coach Steve Mariucci, who currently coaches the Lions. Garcia and Mariucci had a strong relationship while with the 49ers and Mariucci has made it clear he wants a backup to compete with current starter Joey Harrington. 2/25: The Arizona Republic again states that the Cardinals are interested in Garcia.

Kelly Holcombe - 1/10: Rumors in Phoenix on sports talk radio, that Dennis Green might go after Holcombe instead of Brad Johnson or Warner. 2/25: According to Pat McManamon of ClevelandBrowns.com, the Cleveland Browns have offered a contract to unrestricted free agent QB Kelly Holcomb. "We're waiting to hear back," general manager Phil Savage said. "That will probably happen (soon)." Terms of the proposal were not released.

Mike McMahon - Some teams have shown interest in him in the past.

Jeff Blake - 2/21: Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles backup QB Jeff Blake is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March and is not expected to return next season.

Vinny Testaverde - 2/14 - The Star Telegram reports that the Jets would have interest in Testaverde as a backup as "They need a veteran backup who can step in until Pennington is ready." However, Testaverde's preference is to resign with the Cowboys. His agent said ""If they come to the table with a good offer ... certainly, with [Cowboys coach] Bill [Parcells] now doing it his way, I think there is no question he would sign."

Jon Kitna - 2/13: Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Jon Kitna is happy in Cincinnati and the word is that he will likely not depart the Bengals unless he has a rock-solid promise from another team that he can compete for a starting job. 2/14: According to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, all indications are the Cincinnati Bengals have no desire to trade backup QB Jon Kitna. They have him for a good price at $1 million for 2005, the last year of his contract, and the club would have to scramble to find a veteran who could play for any extended length of time in order to fit the role of top backup.

Chris Simms 2/15: ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Cleveland Browns want a big, strong armed quarterback who is adept at play-action fakes. Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Chris Simms is one player new HC Romeo Crennell is considering.

Chris Weinke - 2/21: Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers QB Chris Weinke has a relatively high salary cap figure for next year and could be released this offseason.

Jeff Geroge - 2/24: The Chicago Tribune reports the Chicago Bears will not re-sign QB Jeff George, according to sources. George will become an unrestricted free agent on March 2.

Running Backs

Lamont Jordan - 1/16: Jordan said he doesn't know what his market value is, but he's finished being a backup, saying, "I know I can start on any team in the league." Stated that he wants to return to New York, even as Martin's backup, but "I would definitely want an increased role. I want to play; that's the bottom line." 1/18: A Newsday Article suggests that resigning Jordan should be the Jets' top priority. According to the article, " If Jordan gets to free agency, he's probably gone, because the money could get too astronomical for the Jets to keep him and still stay under the salary cap. That's why they need to get it done before the signing period begins." 1/18: Newsday Article indicates that John Abraham, not Jordan will get the franchise tag. 1/19 - Another Newsday Article restates what has already been said about the Jordan/Jets Situation: ""He reiterated to Herm and to us that he really would like to be here," Bradway said. Chances are, Jordan will get more money to start somewhere else." 1/21: Len P reports that "the Raiders still have some interest in Jordan, but are justifiably concerned that he hasn't carried a full load. " 1/26: The Tampa Tribune reports that the Bucs were named by a league source as a possible destination for Jordan. 2/1: A Tampa Tribune Article names the Bucs as a possible destination for Jordan. 2/10: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the team is expected to make a "strong offer" for Jordan if they can't get Jerry Porter resigned. 2/23: The agent for Jets running back LaMont Jordan said yesterday that his client will test the free-agent market but hasn't shut the door on a possible return to the club. Free agency starts next Wednesday. Jordan, who just completed his fourth NFL season, is considered by many the top running back in free agency now that the Seahawks and Colts put their franchise tags on Shaun Alexander and Edgerrin James. Jordan hopes to sign a deal that would pay him at least $12 million in guaranteed money. The Buccaneers, Cardinals, Dolphins, Panthers and Raiders are among the teams who may express an interest in Jordan.

Shaun Alexander - Franchised by Seahawks - Unrestricted free agent. 11/18: Sun Sentinel Article: "In a conference call, it seemed like RB Shaun Alexander was just as eager to be with the Dolphins in 2005 as Seattle. Depending on who is running the franchise, the Dolphins may try signing a more modestly priced tailback. Still, that won't keep Alexander from dreaming about playing in a warmer climate." The 1/17 edition of PFW's Whispers states "With Seahawks RB Maurice Morris not considered heir-apparent material, word is the Hawks will seriously consider trading for a running back (Travis Henry? Reuben Droughns?) or signing one in free agency should Shaun Alexander depart. At presstime, our sources put the odds on Alexander leaving at 60-40." 2/21: The News-Tribune reports QB Matt Hasselbeck will own the Seattle Seahawks’ franchise-player label if both he and Shaun Alexander remain unsigned Tuesday. Seattle is poised to make that move even if it means allowing RB Shaun Alexander to hit the market when NFL free agency begins March 2. Teams have until 1 p.m. Tuesday to name one franchise player. The team has not been aggressive in attempting to re-sign the Pro Bowl running back, and a deal before the deadline appears unlikely. 2/22: Per the BenMaller.com email, the Seahawks reportedly reached a deal with Matt Hasselbeck last night, and could now be prepared to use the franchise tag on Alexander.

Edgerrin James - Franchished by Colts - Colts brass has stated that James will be back. James has stated that he'd love to go back to Miami where he played his college ball. However, since the Colts got Harrison resigned, they have their tag to use on James. From ESPN: "With several of their other offensive stars locked up with new contracts, the Colts can focus on Edgerrin James, and Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the team is set to slap a franchise tag on James to prevent the running back from being a free agent. The Colts structured Harrison's contract with an eye toward retaining enough salary cap flexibility to keep James." 1/18: An Indianapolis Star article echoes a growing sentiment, that the Colts should let James go and spend the money instead on shoring up the defense. The 1/17 edition of PFW's Whispers states "Team observers aren’t 100 percent convinced RB Edgerrin James will be in Indianapolis for the 2005 season. The Colts have said they plan to keep James, but the option to use the team’s franchise designation and trade James remains a possibility. Remember, Colts president Bill Polian traded Marshall Faulk for draft picks." 1/31: In a move that should surprise no one, James is quoted in a Miami Herald Article stating that he would love to return to Miami. 2/21: Associated Press reports Indianapolis Colts RB Edgerrin James, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, is expected to be tagged as the team's "franchise" player. The team could use their tag on him as soon as Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Travis Henry - Has received permission from the Bills to seek a trade. Interested teams are said to be Oakland, Arizona and Miami. Miami seems to have the most interest, the but the Bills are leary of trading him to a division foe. Buffalo reportedly wants a 2nd round pick. Titans GM Floyd Reese shot down "Henry returns to Tennessee" rumors: "''He is a good player, but from our standpoint we probably have more pressing needs,'' Reese said." 1/18: In a Palm Beach Post Article, Henry states that he wants a trade to Miami. "I would love to be down there. I was talking to my agent about getting me down there. That's what Miami needed this year was a running back. I see myself down there if at all possible." The article goes on to say "Henry is so convinced that the Bills will trade him that he has sold off many of his belongings and moved the rest into Florida storage." Oakland, Miami, Carolina, Tampa Bay and Arizona are listed as possible suitors. 1/19: - A Tampa Tribune article suggests that Miami might not be able to come up with a trade for Henry, but suggests that Tampa Bay is interested. 1/21: Len P reports that the Raiders "like Henry, but are concerned about his fumbilitis." 1/27: The Miami Herald quotes Tom Donahoe as saying that the Dolphins remain a trade possibility for Henry: "If we get the right compensation, we would do the trade. We're not going to give him away, but it doesn't matter if the other team is in our division.'' 1/29: The Bucs are reportedly not high on Henry. "The reason is not necessarily the second-round draft pick the Bills are believed to be asking for, but Henry's past fumbling problems." 1/30: A New York Post Article mentions the Vikings as a possible suitor for Henry. 2/21: Per the Arizona Republic, "Cardinals offensive tackle L.J. Shelton met with Bills coaches and officials Thursday in Buffalo, a visit that could lead to a trade for running back Travis Henry. Shelton's trip included a physical, but trade talks are preliminary and other teams are interested in Shelton." 2/23: According to the Rochester Democrat, The Buffalo Bills are aggressively trying to complete a rare player-for-player trade that would send disgruntled running back Travis Henry to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for young veteran left tackle L.J. Shelton. A deal could be struck at the NFL's Scouting Combine, which starts today in Indianapolis. "There's a lot of activity on it, is all I can say," said Arizona-based Eric Metz, one of Shelton's agents. 2/25: While no deal has been struck yet, Tom Donahue gave Henry permission to visit Arizona.

Rudi Johnson - Franchisd By Bengals - Cincinatti.com states that "the Bengals are expected to use the franchise tag on Johnson if they can't sign him to a long-term contract." 1/23: - Bengals.com reports that "Rudi Johnson’s agent has told the Bengals his client plans to sit out the season rather than play for a one-year deal as a franchise free agent. “That’s what Rudi has told me and that’s what I’ve told the team,” said Peter Schaffer. “He feels like he has showed good faith by playing this past year on a one-year deal and that he has earned the security of something long term.”" 1/31: In a Dan Pompei Sporting News Article he states "Don't be surprised if the Bengals allow RB Rudi Johnson to take a free-agent hike. The Bengals have decided they will not pay Johnson at the level of the top backs in the NFL, and they are not likely to put the franchise tag on him. How could they be so comfortable allowing a solid starter to walk? Bengals coach Marvin Lewis would be confident going into next season with Chris Perry as his starter. Perry, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2004, didn't make much of an impact as a rookie mostly because of a sports hernia. But Lewis believes Perry will be a special player who could be the team's 2005 equivalent of QB Carson Palmer this season." 2/1: Johnson's agent is quoted in the Cincinatti Post stating that Johnson will sit out the season if the Bengals place the francise tag on Johnson. 2/8: Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports the Cincinnati Bengals could opt to transition tag RB Rudi Johnson rather than place the franchise tag on him. However, by making Johnson a transition free agent and tendering him a one-year offer of $5.2 million (the average of the top 10 paid backs), the Bengals could risk losing Johnson in the offseason if another team makes a contract offer Cincinnati chooses not to match. 2/15: The Bengals officially franchise Johnson.

Brian Westbrook - 2/23: The Philadelphia Eagles have announced they have issued a one-year, $1.43 million tender offer to restricted free agent RB Brian Westbrook. By tendering Westbrook, the Eagles now have the right of first refusal to match an offer made by another team. If the Eagles choose not to match, they will receive a first-round draft choice as compensation from that team.

Anthony Thomas - An urestricted free agent. Will not be back with the Bears. Thomas said at season's end, "They're rebuilding, and I'm not part of that equation."

Reuben Droughns - 1/18: The Broncos give Droughns permission to seek a trade as Bell appears to be their guy. 1/19 - A Miami Herald quotes agent Drew Rosenhaus saying that Miami is Droughns preferred destination, "Agent Drew Rosenhaus said he has received permission from the Broncos to seek a trade for RB Reuben Droughns, and he plans to speak with the Dolphins.''Reuben's not interested in splitting time with Tatum Bell'' Rosenhaus said.``We've targeted the Dolphins as a team that we'll talk and visit with, either later this week or at the Senior Bowl next week.''

Amos Zereoue - 1/21: InsideBayArea.com reports that Zereoue "is set to become an unrestricted free agent. However, there does not appear to be a lot of outside interest for him."

Jerome Bettis - 1/24: Bettis says he "probably" couldn't say either way(whether he would be back with the Steelers in 05). He hinted that salary and playing time considerations could play into his decision. 2/2: In a Pittsburgh Tribune Review Article Bettis "said he still hasn't decided if he will return for his 13th season, but he said that, if he does come back, he would be content to remain a backup to Duce Staley. Bettis, who will turn 33 on Feb. 16, said he wants to be sure that he is physically ready to return before he commits to another season." 2/13: Jaymes Song, of the Associated Press, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis put his chances of returning to the Steelers at "50-50" following the Pro Bowl Sunday, Feb. 13. Bettis said the Pro Bowl was a special game for him, as he probably won't be back there again. He plans to spend a few weeks at home relaxing and spending time with his family before making a decision on whether or not he wants to return for his 13th season in the NFL. 2/22: Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jerome Bettis may be leaning towards playing another season instead of retiring; that is, of course, provided he can work out a new deal with the Steelers. Pittsburgh has exchanged contract proposals with Bettis' agent, Lamont Smith. If the two sides can work out a new deal, Bettis is expected to play again in 2005.

Eddie George - 1/23: George tells the Nashville Tennesseen that he's nowhere near ready to call it quits after nine NFL seasons. The Titans' all-time leading rusher and four-time Pro Bowl selection wants to play another 3 or 4 years, only this time for a team that wants him.''I just really wasn't one of (Parcells') guys."

Kevin Barlow - 1/23: A New York Post Article states "The Niners are willing to dump Kevan Barlow since the disappointing back is due $6.5 million roster bonus on March 1. A source tells The Post that Barlow could be had very cheaply."

Michael Bennett - 1/23: A New York Post Article states "The Vikes are planning to shop either Onterrio Smith or Michael Bennett this offseason. Minnesota is hopeful of acquiring a second- or third-round pick." 2/16: In an interview with the Pioneer Press, Tice also addresses trading a RB, "We're not trying to shop (Moss) or any of our running backs, either." 2/25: Hank Goldberg states on ESPN radio that the Dolphins and Vikings have agreed to a deal in principal that would send Bennett to the Dolphins for CB Patrick Surtain.

Onterrio Smith - 1/23: A New York Post Article states "The Vikes are planning to shop either Onterrio Smith or Michael Bennett this offseason. Minnesota is hopeful of acquiring a second- or third-round pick." 2/16: In an interview with the Pioneer Press, Tice also addresses trading a RB, "We're not trying to shop (Moss) or any of our running backs, either."

Mike Alstott - 1/26 : A Tampa Tribune article on the Bucs interest in Cadillac Williams suggests that Alstott could be a salary cap casualty. 2/10: An article on PewterReport.com states that "Although Tampa Bay may attempt to rework his deal and offer him a league-minimum contact in the next few weeks, Alstott could also become a cap casualty. The “A-Train” carried the ball a career-low 67 times for 230 yards (3.4 avg.) last season, and his $2 million cap value in 2005 along with head coach Jon Gruden’s desire to feature more of a two halfback-driven offense could make him a bit pricey for the cap-strapped Bucs."

Najeh Davenport - Would probably fair better if there weren't so many other options on the free agent RB market.

Verron Haynes - Everyone's favorite offseason RB sleeper.

Jesse Chatman - Quality backup to Tomlinson.

Dominic Rhodes - Resigns with Colts - 2/23: Signs two year deal with Colts.

Derrick Blaylock - Rumors are the Cardinals are interested in him, thought they would probably acquire another back in the draft/free agency to compete with him. The Cardinals new O-coordinator used to be the Chiefs O-Line coach, helping to fuel these rumors.

Ron Dayne - Showed up in training camp in the best shape of his career and demonstrated a lot of speed, but wasn't used much in the regular season. He'll hit the free agent market. The Palm Beach Post speculates that the Dolphins may be interested in Dayne, "Look for RB Ron Dayne to end up in Miami playing for former Big Ten coach Nick Saban. Dayne, who certainly isn't going to return to the Giants, is said to be very high on Miami's wish list. However, sources close to the Dolphins state the club will not be very patient with Dayne."

Chester Taylor - Has looked good backing up Jamal Lewis the past two years.

William Green - ClevelandBrowns.com reports that the team has given Brown permission to seek a trade.

Wide Receivers

Jerry Porter - Signs long term deal with Raiders - An unrestricted free agent. Struggled with injuries and consitancy, but saw his value surge after a big second half of the year. After voiding the final year of his contract with the Raiders said on his future in Oakland, "I'm done." 12/26 New York Post Article: "It sure seems as if free-agent-to-be Jerry Porter already has his bags packed for Tampa. The Oakland receiver has told teammates that he plans to sign with the Bucs this offseason, while a Bucs source confirmed that the interest is mutual." 12/30: San Jose Mercury News Article: Kerry Collins makes a plea to keep Porter - "It's very important, I've gotten a good rapport established with him. He can be an 80-catch guy in this system, no problem. I think that's one of the most important things that'll happen this off-season. We've got something started, and he's a big part of what we'd like to do.'" 1/23: Len Pasquerlli says that "Wide receiver Jerry Porter, expected to be one of the most ardently pursued unrestricted free agents when the signing period commences in less than two months, might not make it onto the open market. Although a deal is not yet imminent, sources close to Porter told ESPN.com that there has been ongoing dialogue with Oakland officials." 1/24: From PFW Whispers, "Though contract talks continue, it would be considered a real surprise if WR Jerry Porter re-signed with the Raiders before free agency opens in March. The feeling is he really would like to see what kind of market there is for him out there, and the Raiders, at least presently, appear content with that." 2/10: The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Porter has turned down a lucrative offer from the Raiders to test the free agent market. "I owe it to myself to get my market value, if not (sign with) some team that will pay me more than market value. I owe it to myself to find out (what I can get).'' 2/15: Brent Jones, of the Baltimore Sun, reports with the pending departure of WR Kevin Johnson, the Baltimore Ravens now have more money to potentially lure in free agent WR Jerry Porter once free agency begins in early March. 2/21: The Raiders are debating franchsing either Porter or Charles Woodson. 2/22: From the BenMaller.com email "The Raiders, meanwhile, continue to have "positive" negotiations with wide receiver Jerry Porter, a team source said, and hope to convince their leading pass catcher to sign a five-year contract worth more than $20 million before the March 2 start of free agency. The Raiders, sources say, already have accommodated his cap value in their short-term planning."

Randy Moss - Traded to Raiders - Articles in both Minnesota and Phoenix have local columnists talking about a Moss to the Cardinals possiblity. 1/18 - Pioneer Press: McCombs said he doesn't expect Moss to be anywhere else next season, and, when asked if Moss could be traded, he replied: "I don't think so. "I don't see how we would want to give up a player like that." 1/23: A New York Post Article states "WR Randy Moss' days in Minnesota may very well be finished. A source confirmed that a Vikings official contacted owner Al Davis, who said he'd be interested in acquiring Moss. A front-office source said they'd likely accept "an impact defensive player and a first-round pick" for Moss, who is signed through 2008. The source said it's "more than likely going to get done."" 1/25: A Star Tribune Article chronicles all the rumored trade destinations for Moss: Ravens, Raiders, Dolphins and Jets. 2/1: Joe Gibbs is quoted in a Star Tribune Article stating that the Redskins are not interested in acquiring Randy Moss. 1/30: A New York Daily News article states that " If the Vikings make WR Randy Moss available, as seems to be the case, the Ravens could make the strongest push for him." 2/6: Red McCombs has given permission to trade Randy Moss. In return the Vikings want a combination of draft picks and players, preferably a defensive starter. 2/7: McCombs denies the ESPN report about shopping Moss. In a brief interview from his home in San Antonio, McCombs said he has not authorized any trade discussions for Moss. And while the team likely will entertain offers once the trading period begins March 2, Brzezinski said there have been no discussions, either with McCombs or other NFL teams. 2/7: New York Newsday, reports the New York Jets are interested in trading for Minnesota Vikings WR Randy Moss, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. A trade to the Jets would reunite Moss with his college quarterback, Chad Pennington, who played two seasons with him at Marshall. "I think he'd be a great teammate," Pennington said of Moss. 2/7: ProFootballTalk.com reports that the the Raiders offered cornerback Philip Buchanon straight up for Moss during the season, but the Vikings declined. This prompted them to speculate that they'll continue to push for Moss. 2/9: An article on the Ultimate Jaguars Page states that "Owner Wayne Weaver said Tuesday that the (Jaguars) would not be willing to meet the Minnesota Vikings' asking price for the mercurial wide receiver, which reports say is two first-round draft picks or a first-round pick and a current starter." 2/12: In an interview with John Clayton, Mike Tice reiterates that the Vikings have no intention of trading Moss. 2/21: New Vikings Owner Reggie Fowler states that Moss will not be traded, "I think Mr. Moss is, if not the finest, one of the finest receivers in the league today," Fowler said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "And I think he's a winner. . . So I look forward to working with Randy, and I think he'll do all the things we need him to do. I don't know that you take some of the best players in the league and start trading them. We need those people to help us win, and I think Randy's one of those guys." 2/23: Chris Mortensen said on the "Mike and Mike Show" that the Raiders are the only team that has shown any real interest in acquiring Moss, offering the #7 pick and LB Napolean Harris. The big hold up per Mort is that Moss has told the Vikings that the only other teams he'll play for are the Ravens and the Falcons. Per mort, the Falcons have no interest and the Ravens interest is only limited, and they would prefer to sign a FA WR instead. 2/23: Moss's agent reports that he has been told that Moss has been traded to the Raiders in exchange for the #7 pick, Napolean Harris and a 7th round selection.

Derrick Mason - Released by Titans - Mentioned in the Tennesseen as a possible cap casuality. Derrick Mason has led the Titans in receptions for four consecutive seasons and is very reliable, but he's also due $4.7 million ($3.2 million base salary, $1.5 million roster bonus) this year. Unless Mason and the Titans can rework his contract to reduce those numbers, he'll be released. That would shift pressure to Drew Bennett and Tyrone Calico. 2/21: An article in the Nashville Tennesseen states that "Barring last-minute changes, wide receiver Derrick Mason will be cut." 2/21: TitansOnline.com reports Tennessee Titans general manager Floyd Reese stated the team will release WR Derrick Mason at a "point in time yet to be determined." 2/22: Per the BenMaller.com email, "The Jets also may be interested in former Titans wide receiver Derrick Mason, who was released yesterday in a salary-cap crunch. Mason, 31, played under new Jets offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger in Tennessee, where the wideout led all NFL receivers in 2004 with a career-high 96 catches for 1,168 yards and seven TDs. He was the first player in franchise history to have four consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons." 2/22: Adam H. Beasley, of BaltimoreRavens.com, reports the Baltimore Ravens will likely be shopping for a veteran wide receiver this offseason, and may already be eyeing free agent WR Derrick Mason (Titans). The Ravens do not have a receiver older than 25 on their current roster. 2/23: One person familiar with the Jets' intentions confirmed yesterday that former Titans receiver Derrick Mason will factor into their pursuit of a wideout to complement Justin McCareins and Santana Moss. In fact, word is that some in the Jets organization view Mason as a No. 1 receiver even though he is only 5-10. The Jets aren't frightened by his size or age (31), noting that Mason has only been a full-time starter for 4 1/2 years. 2/25: The Jaguars confirmed they have spoken with the agent for former Tennessee wide receiver Derrick Mason while expressing interest in Denver defensive end Reggie Hayward.

Laveranues Coles - 2/21: According to the Washington Post, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and Roosevelt Barnes, the agent for Coles, have reached an oral agreement that will likely lead to his release, making the 27-year-old wideout an unrestricted free agent. 2/22: Updating ongoing reports, Nunyo Demasio, of the Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins are trying to trade disgruntled WR Laveranues Coles to avoid releasing him and not receiving anything for him in return. However, any trade depends on Coles agreeing to restructure his contract. One option, according to a source, is for Coles to forfeit a $5 million deferred signing bonus payment, which is due April 1, in exchange for the Redskins trading him to a team of his choice. By doing such a move, it would limit the amount of money Coles would account for under Washington's salary cap. Head coach Joe Gibbs has denied the team would simply release Coles into the open market. If a trade isn't able to be worked out, the team could still end up releasing him if he forfeits the bonus payment. 2/22: The Washington Times reports the New York Jets have been involved in trade talks with the Washington Redskins about acquiring WR Laveranues Coles this offseason, according to a source familiar with the situation. The Jets' franchise player DE John Abraham has been mentioned in the potential deal, according to the source. Talks between both sides could heat up at the NFL Scouting Combine this week. 2/22: Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs said that a Washington Post report suggesting WR Laveranues Coles may be released by the Redskins is "inaccurate and untrue," reports Gary Fitzgerald of Redskins.com. "[Coles] and I have had several talks and we understand each other," Gibbs said. "We're just working our way through everything during the offseason, and that's really it." Asked if there's a chance Coles might not be with the team next season, Gibbs said: "My statement is how I feel about it and I'm making plans and we're going forward with what we have and [Coles] is part of those plans." 2/23: Chris Mortensen said on the "Mike and Mike Show", that Coles and Muhsin Muhammad top the Ravens wish list. 2/25: Clark Judge reports on CBS Sportsline that " NFL sources at this week's scouting combine said the Jets and Washington are close to a deal that would send (Coles) to New York for wide receiver Santana Moss in a straight-player deal".

Plaxico Burress - 1/24: Burress says he "probably" wouldn't be back following Sunday night's 41-27 loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game 2/12: Jerry DiPaola, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said the team is open to the possibility of rewarding both WR Hines Ward and WR Plaxico Burress with multi-year contracts if they feel it's in the best interest of the organization. "People can say (it will be difficult), but we would never approach it and say we have too much (money) in one position," said Colbert. "If they are your best players and they deserve to be compensated at those numbers, then you have to do that." Burress is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next month while Ward is said to be seeking a long-term contract extension this year. 2/14: The New York Post reports that the Steelers to not intend to resign burress. 2/15: Brent Jones, of the Baltimore Sun, reports the Baltimore Ravens could push to add Plaxico Burress once free agency begins in early March. 2/21: It appears that the Steelers don't intend to tag Burress.

Muhsin Muhammad - Released by Panthers - Hadn't heard any destinations, but he was in the press box for the Eagles/Vikings game, prompting speculation that the Eagles are his choice. The last two players who had worked playoff games at Lincoln Financial Field for the NFL Network ended up signing with the Eagles. 1/26: A Charolette Observer states that " Panthers general manager Marty Hurney and the agent for wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad met Tuesday to discuss ways for the team to keep Muhammad. He is under contract for 2005, but he's scheduled to receive a $10 million bonus March 2 and to carry a $12.5 million salary-cap figure. Both sides admit Carolina can't keep him at a cap figure that high." 1/30: A New York Post Article states that "If the Panthers ax Muhammad, the Bears are certain to make a very strong run at him. Muhammad's availability would add a solid player to a relatively weak FA group of wideouts led by WR Plaxico Burress." 2/12: Alex Marvez, of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, reports some of the Pro Bowl players representing the Philadelphia Eagles in Hawaii were reportedly encouraging fellow Pro Bowler and Carolina Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad to join the Eagles this offseason. Muhammad, who could be released this year if he can't rework his contract with the Panthers, has expressed his desire to remain with Carolina next season. 2/23: Chris Mortensen said on the "Mike and Mike Show", that Muhammad and Lavereneus Coles top the Ravens wish list. 2/25: If Muhammad, who has one year remaining on his Panthers contract, is still on the Carolina roster Wednesday, he will be owed a $10 million roster bonus. The team would like to keep him, but must release him before Wednesday(3/3) to avoid taking that hit. The Panthers had been hoping to renegotiate Muhammad's contract to reduce what would be a $12.5 million salary-cap figure in 2005, but negotiations with his agent, Joel Segal, have not produced an agreement. 2/25: ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Carolina Panthers have released WR Muhsin Muhammad. He would have been due a $10 million bonus during early March, which the team was not interested in paying. Muhammad set personal bests with 93 receptions, 1,405 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns during the 2004 season

Koren Robinson - Still under contract, but the Seahawks are unhappy with him (suspension, generally underwhelming performance). Could be trade bait.

Rod Gardner - 1/24: From PFW Whispers, "Tampa Bay is a strong possibility for WR Rod Gardner, according to Redskins observers, and the price the team might ask in a trade would be a mid-round draft pick." 1/29: A Len Pasquerelli Article states "The agent for Rod Gardner confirmed to ESPN.com on Saturday that the Washington Redskins have granted him permission to seek a trade for the veteran wide receiver. Washington is believed to want a second-round choice in the 2005 draft in return for Gardner, who was the Redskins' first-round pick in 2001. One team that has already been whispered to have some interest in Gardner is Tampa Bay, which intends to upgrade its wide receiver corps." 2/25: The Tampa Tribune, reports that the Buccaneers are believed to have interest in trading for Washington Redskins WR Rod Gardner this offseason. The club could dangle one of their 11 draft choices this year in a potential deal.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh - New York papers mentioned Houshmandzadeh as a target in free agency. 2/1: In a Cincinatti Post states that the Bengals want Houshmanzadeh to return as a starter, making re-signing him second only to resigning Rudi Johnson. 2/14: The New York Post reports the Pittsburgh Steelers already have a replacement in mind for free-agent WR Plaxico Burress, whom they do not plan to re-sign — WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Bengals). Pittsburgh believes the H-Man can be just as good a downfield threat as Burress, and will certainly come cheaper. His dependable hands and selfless attitude make him a perfect fit for the Steelers' offense.

David Patten - Unrestricted free agent. 2/7: A Len Pasquerrelli article states that "the Pats would like to retain (Patten) at a palatable price.".

Kevin Johnson - Final Year of Contract Voided by Ravens - 2/14: The Trenton Times reports the Baltimore Ravens will need a wide receiver to replace WR Kevin Johnson. He plans to opt out of his contract and give up a $1 million bonus he's due. Johnson wants a chance to test the market and play for a winning team with an experienced quarterback. "I've never had my choice," Johnson, who was drafted by Cleveland, claimed on waivers by Jacksonville and traded to Baltimore, said. "Let me go on the record and say I would love to play for the Eagles. I think I'd be perfect with Donovan, T.O. and (Brian) Westbrook. But I just want to play on a good team." That rules out the Giants, who supposedly have interest in him. Tampa Bay is a possibility, but don't be surprised if he goes to Houston and reunites with OC Chris Palmer, who drafted him out of Syracuse in 1999. 2.23: The Baltimore Ravens have voided the final year of WR Kevin Johnson's contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Eddie Berlin - 2/21: Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports the Tennessee Titans have decided not to exercise their option on the contract of WR Eddie Berlin, effectively making him an unrestricted free agent.

Freddie Mitchell - 2/21: Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles WR Freddie Mitchell could be traded or released this offseason as a league source said last week that the wide receiver told several teammates he wants to become this year's OL John Welbourn (Chiefs); a reference to the guard who complained his way out of town last off-season and was subsequently traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Santana Moss - 2/25: 2/25: Clark Judge reports on CBS Sportsline that " NFL sources at this week's scouting combine said the Jets and Washington are close to a deal that would send (Coles) to New York for wide receiver Santana Moss in a straight-player deal".

Jerry Rice - Released by Seahawks - 2/25: MSNBC reports that the Seahawks have officially released Rice.

Tight Ends

Bubba Franks - Transitioned by Packers - Franks is an unrestricted free agent. 1/29: A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel states that Franks' future with the Packers is "uncertain". Franks is quoted as saying ""There haven't been any talks really and I don't know what's going to happen. If this was it, though, at least I went on a good note." and "If I come back, I hope I get a few more chances. I hope that's the case wherever I end up." A Pro Football Weekly Article speculates that the Packers could place the franchise tag on Franks: "Green Bay could save money by paying Franks the average salary of the top five players at the position instead of locking him up long term with a deal that includes a substantial signing bonus." 2/20: Pete Dougherty, of PackersNews.com, reports the Green Bay Packers could decide to designate TE Bubba Franks as their transition or franchise player to limit his mobility in the free agent market. Franks, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, would cost the team $2.7 million as their franchise player and $2 million as their transition player. The Packers have until Feb. 22 to tag Franks with either designation. 2/21: The Green Bay Packers have announced they will designate TE Bubba Franks as the team's "transition" player, allowing the team to maintain a right of first refusal to match any offer sheet Franks receives from another team. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent March 2. The Packers plan to negotiate a long-term deal with Franks. 2/22: Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers TE Bubba Franks' agent, Gene Mato, said Franks is prepared to receive a lot of attention on the free agent market despite being tagged as the team's transition player. Franks is interested in going to a team that utilizes the tight end position in the passing game more than the Packers do. Mato did not rule out Franks returning to the Packers, but noted he would be looking for a team that heavily relies on the tight end in the passing game. As the team's transition player, Franks is in line for a one-year, $2.095 million deal from the Packers.

Anthony Becht - Is an unrestricted free agent and likely won't be re-signed by the Jets. "There has been no talk," Becht said of contract negotiations with the Jets. "I'm going to play very hard. I'm very loyal. I'm a Jet now. Whatever happens in the future, happens. "I'm not worried about whether I'm here or not. If I am, great. I love it here. If I'm not, I'm not."

Jermainne Wiggins - Showed a lot of skills that nobody knew he had.

Shad Meier 2/21: Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports the Tennessee Titans have decided not to exercise their option on the contract of TE Shad Meier, effectively making him an unrestricted free agent.

Kicker

Adam Viniateri - Franchised by Patriots - Unrestricted free agent. 2/7: Per a Len pasquerelli article on the Pats, "Don't believe for a second, though, that Vinatieri will be plying his trade elsewhere in 2005. Word is that, if the two sides can't agree on a long-term deal, the Patriots will use the "franchise" tag on their star kicker." 2/22: The Patriots franchise kicker is on the verge of receiving the franchise tag. Unless Adam Vinatieri and the Patriots come to terms on a multi-year deal, which as of last night did not appear imminent, the Pats are expected to lock up the rights to the three-time Pro Bowler by franchising him by today's 4 p.m. deadline. 2/23: Franchised by Patriots.

Joe Nedney - Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports barring any last-minute changes, the Tennessee Titans are expected to cut PK Joe Nedney. An official announcement could come as early as Monday, Feb. 21. The club could re-sign Nedney later this offseason to compete in training camp.

The only guy I didn't add was Koren Robinson. Is he a free agent? He obviously had a disappointing year, but I hadn't heard his name in trade rumors and thought he had at least another year or two on his contract.

I'd be interested in hearing anything about D.Blaylock. He's a free agent and certainly out in KC. Who'd take him? Was he a product of the system?

Seattle managment is very unhappy with him. I think there is a good chance he gets traded.

Let's speculate for a minute. Can K-Rob be dealt for a good RB? (or is the assumption that it would be a pick?)If so, can Seattle sign one of the better FA WRs, or are they better off drafting one?

KRob is baggage. just had a 4 game suspension, 1 more for a year. KRob will need to sign for little to nothing with incentives.

Since we're talking rumors, seems like you can add...Edgerrin James...options are Indy franchises him to trade, Indy franchises him and pays him to play, Indy gives a deal he'll accept, he walks as a UFA.Drew Brees...options are SD frnahcise him to trade, SD franchises and pays him (was there ever resolution in the other thread that contended if SD kept Rivers and franchised Brees they would account for 23 or so % of the 2005 cap?), SD gives him a deal he'll accept, he walks as a UFA.

Edgerrin James...options are Indy franchises him to trade, Indy franchises him and pays him to play, Indy gives a deal he'll accept, he walks as a UFA.
I think the writing is on the wall for Ind. :2cents: for Edge not getting a deal yet is because Ind brass wanted to see how they did in the playoffs with the ~30% payroll defense. With the early exit from the playoffs, I exepct to see Edge let go and Ind get serious about getting defensive players.

I updated the original post to include some additional links and quotes as well as adding a few more players. I was unaware the Derrick Mason was a likely cap casualty, at least in 05.

Wasn't there a rumor about O Smith to the Raiders a little while ago? Maybe you can list it as "Michael Bennett/Onterrio Smith" since one of them (yes, most likely Bennett, but you never know) will most likely be moved.

Eagles will make locking up Brian Westbrook and Jeremiah Trotter priorities, the interesting situation to watch is Corey Simon. Simon was playing his way out of Philly during the first half of the season, but has been back to his dominant self in the 2nd half. I had been convinced they would let him walk, but it's not that easy to replace a 2-way Pro Bowl DT who's under 30...they don't grow on trees. Most likely Simon leaves because some team will pay him more than his worth (if Cornelius Griffin can get the deal he received last year, all bets are off) but a deal to re-sign isn't out of the question.

Other notables:QBKelly Holcombe - Most likely a backup role, unlikely in CLEJeff Blake - Another backup most likely, but he has had success as a starter throughout his career.Mike McMahonRBRudi Johnson - I think he's still scheduled to be free. With all the good RBs on the market, CIN may decide to sit back and sign someone cheaper, especially since they took Chris Perry in the 1st round last year.Ron Dayne - Should get a shot somewhereChester Taylor - He'll have a market.WRDavid Patten TEJermaine Wiggins - Showed a lot of skills that nobody knew he had.

There are also rumors that Tennessee will be looking to draft a WR in day one. Mason could find a home in a lot of places, it will be interesting to see what happens, if he enters the market is he more sought after than Plaxico, Moose and Porter?

You can toss this little gem onto the "Ron Dayne Story"... If it's to be believedJan 2, 2005, 09:19Giants - RB Dayne The Dolphin ?Ken Palmer, New York Post - [Full Article]Look for RB Ron Dayne to end up in Miami playing for former Big Ten coach Nick Saban. Dayne, who certainly isn't going to return to the Giants, is said to be very high on Miami's wish list. However, sources close to the Dolphins state the club will not be very patient with Dayne.

Yeah, I remember reading that one - I'll believe it when I see it.Seems like the writer is basing speculation on the fact that they have Big Ten backgrounds. Kind of reminds me of the movie "When Harry Met Sally" when Billy Crystal had a bad date with a woman because she went to a Big Ten school, as did his ex-wife.

RBRudi Johnson - I think he's still scheduled to be free. With all the good RBs on the market, CIN may decide to sit back and sign someone cheaper, especially since they took Chris Perry in the 1st round last year.
I just don't see this happening.Rudi had 1400 yards and 12 TDS this year. He averaged 4.0 YPC and played all 16 games. He really turned it on for Cinci at the end of the year. (600 yards rushing and 7 TDS in the last 6 games. Perry was banged up for most of the year, and had a grand total of 5 touches.I can't see them letting Johnson go with the hope that Perry can get healthy and one of the other FA's can come in and have the same impact as Johnson.I think Cinci gambled that Johnson wouldn't pan out and they lost. Now they're going to have to pay to keep him around. Perry hasn't proven that he is a 16 game back yet, and to risk losing Johnson at this point would be silly.

Walter Jones may no longer get the Franchise tag on him with Alexander and Hasselback being free agents.

Kendrell Bell
Walter Jones may no longer get the Franchise tag on him with Alexander and Hasselback being free agents.
I disagree. He is still the most valuable of the 3.

My thoughts:

Walter Jones tagged again.

Hasselbeck signs a decent long term deal. Hasselbeck will not be tagged, as he is not worth top 3 at his position.

Alexander walks. Wants too much money, and doesn't really want to be with this team anymore. I don't think it's a real messy split, but he will depart. I could be way off on him, but I doubt it.

The team also has a ton of defensive FA's they need to deal with. Including Ken Lucas.

Add Rueben Droughns to this list. Denver is seeking a high round draft pick and a middle round draft pick in exchange for Droughns. :D

Lamont Jordan - The top free agent running back. Explosive, experienced and has low mileage. Will have lots of suitors. He said he doesn't know what his market value is, but he's finished being a backup, saying, "I know I can start on any team in the league." Stated that he wants to return to New York, even as Martin's backup, but "I would definitely want an increased role. I want to play; that's the bottom line."
This is a sucker move on Jordan't part. The Jets will resign him for less money than he can get on the open market and they can't guarantee how many carries the guy will get. As long as CMart is getting it done Jordan will ride the pine. And considering Martin is the rushing champ I don't see him coming down to earth any time soon. Jordan will resign and do the exact same thing he is doing this year. If he complains he will look like a malcontent and a cancer in the locker room. The only way he gets significant carries is if Martin goes down with an injury....

rumors in tampa are the bucs are going to go HARD after vinatieri or vanderjact.:shrug:forgive the hacking of the names, but they're kickers.

A kicker can mean a 20-30 point difference for a team when counting accuracy, distance, and the ability to make big kicks.

If I've heard once, I've heard 1,000x on NY radio these last few days how the Jets would be "stupid" or "idiotic" to let Jordan leave because he's the "future of the Jets franchise at tailback."People sometimes baffle me...the guy is 27 years old. Sure, he's a talent by all accounts, but WTF would you think he's any more talented than an elite RB prospect you could draft for a cheaper price (than tagging Lamont) who's younger and could potentially give you more years of service.

Other notables:RBChester Taylor - He'll have a market.
Speaking of Taylor -- who has the best potential for a keeper/dynasty roster spot -- Taylor, Morris, or Greg Jones?

Yes, and if either team loses their PK, it seems there's one in the draft who could be better anyway. But why wouldn't TB just draft the Nuge?

As far as I know, they're both under contract.

Correll Buckhalter seems to be a forgotten man.
With two major knee surgeries in three years, it's understandable why.--------------------

Here's a recent rumor on the Raiders' RB situation, courteousy of Pasquarelli.

Looks like the Raiders still have some interest in Jordan, but are justifiably concerned that he hasn't carried a full load. They also like Henry, but are concerned about his fumbilitis.

So seems like it may come down to taking a chance on a relatively unproven guy with upside, or a proven guy that tends to put the ball on the ground.

Raiders | Jordan on the Radar - from www.KFFL.com

Sat, 22 Jan 2005 15:13:55 -0800

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Oakland Raiders are likely to make a run at free agent RB LaMont Jordan, of the New York Jets. Raiders team officials and coaches have already studied Jordan, but there are questions as to whether or not he can be the workhorse running back that head coach Norv Turner usually likes. In Turner's system, the feature running back almost always carries the football 325 times during a year. Jordan has averaged just 65.5 rushing attempts in four seasons.

Raiders | Henry on the Radar - from www.KFFL.com

Sat, 22 Jan 2005 15:13:22 -0800

Updating previous reports, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Oakland Raiders are interested in Buffalo Bills RB Travis Henry and like him a lot. However, they have concerns over his fumbling.

However, there does not appear to be a lot of outside interest for him.

Simon was playing his way out of Philly during the first half of the season, but has been back to his dominant self in the 2nd half. I had been convinced they would let him walk, but it's not that easy to replace a 2-way Pro Bowl DT who's under 30...they don't grow on trees.
Eagles do have four other quality defensive tackles under contract - I think management will let Simon walk if another team puts big $$$ on the table, allowing the impressive Sam Rayburn to slide into his starting spot. If it goes down this way, DT will likely be a priority in the upcoming draft. (I heve seen mocks in which the Eagles draft DT Antajj Hawthorne at the bottom of the 1st round.)I would LOVE to see a Muhsin Muhammad signing... this would clear the way for Todd Pinkston's release. (Wishful thinking!) Freddie Mitchell is probably on his way out, unless he manages to become a Super Bowl hero. Greg Lewis looks to be a capable 3rd receiver in this offense.Correll who? He was an afterthought signing coming into this year, and now with another major injury, he's done in Philly. I do think a big back is needed to complement Westbrook, and I'm hoping the team pursues Najeh Davenport.

You missed one big time TE in the original list:Bubba Franks:

-- Franks Uncertain of Future --Thu Jan 20, 2005 --from FFMastermind.comThe Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Packers TE Bubba Franks took one look back at where he spent his last five years when he left the team's facility. "There haven't been any talks really," said Franks, who's set to become an unrestricted free agent this off-season. "And I don't know what's going to happen. If this was it, though, at least I went on a good note." Franks meant personally, and there's no question he closed his season in style. After having been a forgotten man in the offense much of the season - and at various times throughout his career, too - Franks ended with a bang. Franks caught touchdown passes in his final three games. Franks admits to having no clue what his future holds. But he does realize his strong finish could help him once free agency rolls around. "It's no surprise to me," Franks said of his strong finish. "I've always known what I can do. It's just always been about getting the opportunities here. If I got the opportunities, I usually made the play. If I come back, I hope I get a few more chances. I hope that's the case wherever I end up."
IMO, if he goes to a team that uses the TE more, he could be a top player. I'd like to see Chicago (are they still trying to use Kansas City's scheme?) or the Jets sign him.FWIW, he ended the season as a top 10 TE over the last 6 weeks and a top 5 over the last 3 in most of my leagues.

Davenport, Najeh FB GBNews: PackersNews.com reports the team won't necessarily match a contract offer on Najeh Davenport, who is an unrestricted free agent.Analysis: Tony Fisher would move up to second on the depth chart if Davenport went elsewhere.
I couldn't locate the rumor on packersnews.com though...

FWIW, Keydrick Vincent should be one of the better FA OGs available:

Vincent likely done with Steelers

By Jerry DiPaola

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Friday, January 28, 2005

Steelers unrestricted free agent Keydrick Vincent, who started 27 games at left and right guard the past two seasons, met with coach Bill Cowher this week and became convinced that he has played his last game in Pittsburgh.

"Basically, he told me good luck with everything, a lot of (teams) will be interested in me and Kendall Simmons is going to be the starting right guard next season," Vincent said.

"I thanked him and said, 'I guess it's time for me to see if I can play for another team.'

"It hurts, but Kendall is their guy. I didn't want it to be that way, but, evidently, they don't have plans for me."

Simmons' agent, Kenny Zuckerman, has had preliminary discussions with Steelers officials, and he came away with the same feeling.

"They said they probably aren't going to bring him back," Zuckerman said. "I don't think they are going to be able to afford him."

Vincent, who joined the Steelers as an undrafted rookie in 2001, moved into the starting lineup in August, when Simmons suffered a season-ending knee injury. The loss of Simmons, the Steelers' 2002 first-round draft pick, was expected to be a damaging blow to the offensive line, but Vincent stepped in and helped the team finish second in the NFL in average rushing yards per game (154).

Vincent also started nine games in 2003, when four-time Pro Bowl left guard Alan Faneca moved to left tackle for Marvel Smith, who had a neck injury.

Vincent, 6-foot-5, 325 pounds, said he was hoping to get an opportunity to compete for a starting job with the Steelers.

"I like a challenge," he said. "I think a lot of people think it was a fluke (that he played well for the Steelers). I don't think it's a fluke. I think I'm the real deal.

"I want to feel like a first-round pick. If I get enough money, people will think of me that way. I want to feel wanted."

Zuckerman, who is attending Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Ala., said he has heard through third-party sources that Vincent may be one of the top guards in free agency, along with Joe Andruzzi of the New England Patriots and Marco Rivera of the Green Bay Packers. Teams are not permitted to contact players directly until the free agency signing period begins March 2.

Vincent, who will return to his home in Bartow, Fla., next week, said the Steelers' loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game was a case of mistakes caused by nervousness.

"A lot of people got caught up in the moment," he said. "Guys were nervous. People didn't bring their A game, and it showed."

He said he enjoyed his time in Pittsburgh.

"They were the team that gave me the chance to get to where I'm at," he said.

Tony Fisher signed a 1-year contract today with the Pack.IF Najeh heads to RFA himself, expect the Pack to most likely pass, and, bump up Fisher to the primary back-up to Ahman barring a draft day selection.Edgar Bennett got moved up to RB coach today, also. :cheese:

Some Travis Henry news:

Bucs Reportedly Not High On Bills RB Henry

Published: Jan 29, 2005

MOBILE, Ala. - Disgruntled Buffalo Bills RB Travis Henry remains confident he'll work out a trade to another team this winter, but his chances of landing in Tampa Bay might be slim.

Though Bucs coach Jon Gruden has expressed interest in the Frostproof High product, two NFL team executives told the Tribune this week the Bucs are among teams shying away from Henry.

The reason is not necessarily the second-round draft pick the Bills are believed to be asking for, but Henry's past fumbling problems.

``He's a nice player, but he puts the ball on the ground a lot,'' one NFC team executive said. ``I don't think he was too bad last year, but his history in the league says he gives it up a lot.''

Henry didn't fumble while touching the ball 104 times this season, but he had five fumbles during the 2001 season, 11 in 2002 and seven in 2003.

Henry also ran for more than 1,300 yards during the 2002 and 2003 seasons and is considered one of the league's better young backs because he is improving dramatically as a pass catcher.

The Dolphins appear to be the team most interested in trading for Henry, but they don't have a second-round pick to send to the Bills. Other teams expressing interest are Oakland and Arizona.

Redskins have granted Rod Gardiner permission to seek a trade

Washington likely to ask for secound-round pick

By Len Pasquarelli

ESPN.com

The agent for Rod Gardner confirmed to ESPN.com on Saturday that the Washington Redskins have granted him permission to seek a trade for the veteran wide receiver.

The move, agent Joel Segal said, came during discussions with the Redskins at practices for the Senior Bowl college all-star game in Mobile, Ala., this week. Segal has already begun making contact with other franchises to gauge interest in Gardner, a four-year veteran.

Washington is believed to want a second-round choice in the 2005 draft in return for Gardner, who was the Redskins' first-round pick in 2001.

ESPN.com first reported two weeks ago in a "Tip Sheet" column that the Redskins would make Gardner available in trade talks during the offseason. Granting permission to the wide receiver and his agent to make inquiries of their own leaguewide reinforces that the Redskins intend to deal Gardner. Expanding the loop to include Gardner and Segal could aid Washington in locating suitors.

One team that has already been whispered to have some interest in Gardner is Tampa Bay, which intends to upgrade its wide receiver corps.

At this relatively early juncture of the offseason, Gardner is already the third offensive player to be granted permission to seek a trade, joining tailbacks Travis Henry of Buffalo and Reuben Droughns of Denver. Such permission doesn't always result in a deal, but it does broaden the scope of the search for trade partners, and it allows the player an active role in determining his next address.

In such circumstances, a player's agent will contact teams and discern their level of interest and then apprise the incumbent franchise of potential trade partners.

Gardner, 27, is coming off a 2004 season in which he started in 15 of 16 appearances and posted 51 receptions for 650 yards and five touchdowns. Redskins coaches were somewhat disappointed in his performance, but the Washington passing game struggled all season, and Gardner did not have as many chances to make plays as in previous years.

The former Clemson star has been a starter since his rookie season and in 2002 had his best year, with 71 catches for 1,006 yards and eight touchdowns. In his other three NFL seasons, Gardner, who is regarded as a prototype No. 2 wideout and solid possession receiver with occasional deep speed, averaged 52 receptions.

He has appeared in 62 games, starting in all but two of them, and has 227 catches, 2,997 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Gardner has one year remaining on the original five-year contract he signed as a first-rounder in 2001, and his scheduled base salary for 2005 is $1.446 million. Any team interested in Gardner likely would want him to sign a contract extension.

Add Rueben Droughns to this list. Denver is seeking a high round draft pick and a middle round draft pick in exchange for Droughns. :D
This situation is similar to when Shanahan was asking for a 1st round draft pick for Mike Anderson after his good season. There were no takers.

Redskins have granted Rod Gardiner permission to seek a trade
Just pure speculation, but I thought Marty Schottenhiemer, who draft Gardner, could be interested. It certainly looked plausible to me last year, but with the emergence of Gates and Parker, SD may not be interested.

Indy can't keep both James and Rhodes, that's too much money invested in one position, especially when they have another compitent RB in Mungro. James will not play under the franchise tag :hot: . He is a player that is very money driven. He knows that his next contract will be his last big pay-out, and he won't risk that by playing one year under the franchise tag. Sitting out the whole year would be worth it for him because he would still get the huge pay-out next year anyways. The only thing standing between him and his big pay check is an injury sustained while playing under the franchise tag. On top off that, the Colts can't afford to sign him out-right to a long term contract. This isn't because they don't have the money, but because they can't sign him and impact defensive players (this is their obvious need). If they franchise James and try to make him play they will end up without him and Rhodes, and they know this :X . They will sign Rhodes for much cheaper than James and the production won't fall off much because of the system, even though James is a bit more talented. In the end they may franchise James, but it will be for a trade similar to what happened with TO last year  .

Rudi Johnson/Chris Perry speculation:

Inside Dish: Johnson could be headed out of Cincinnati

Dan Pompei / TSN

Posted: 10 hours ago

Don't be surprised if the Bengals allow RB Rudi Johnson to take a free-agent hike. Perry, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2004, didn't make much of an impact as a rookie

mostly because of a sports hernia. But Lewis believes Perry will be a special player who could be the team's 2005 equivalent of QB Carson Palmer this season. . . .

Mungro IS a very good back, however for that very reason that he is I continue to think that Edge stays put. Let us not forget that ALL THREE BACKS FOR INDY are UFA's this year. I see Indy working hard to get Edge done, taggin' him if the need be, then moving on to Mungro (who'll be the best value sign cost wise of all 3), who's more than capable of handlin' the RB needs as a change of pace, or limited injury replacement, as well as playing FullBack, leaving Rhodes to put on 'is travelin' shoes when Indy shows him no love...IMO
