OMG! Tiki admits that he may hurt FF owners. (2 Viewers)

If Jacobs does prove to be an effective goal-line runner, he may have been an unfortunate choice as a FBG magazine cover boy.
Perhaps not nearly as unfortunate as Fantasy Football Index and Tatum Bell! :excited:
I was thinking the same thing. Could this be enough to push FF magazines to just revert back to putting the #1 guy from previous year on each edition?
Nearly every magazine this year had LT2 or Peyton Manning on the cover. I don't think being like everybody else is much better than going out on a limb with a guy like Bell or Barber. Clearly, the Bell thing could wind up hurting Index a bit, but they are the gold standard of FF magazines and I'm sure they will be fine. If anything, it could give the rest of the industry a small edge.

you said dayne was a fraud and jacobs IS FOR REAL. no one knows for sure if jacobs is for real until he gets some time in meaningful games. until then, it's all conjecture. ergo, you are jumping the gun...much like many people did with dayne last season. pretty simple really.
I'm assuming that since you are here, you play fantasy football. One of the most important skills in fantasy football is evaluating talent and projecting future performance.

I believe that Jacobs will be a quality complementary RB and very strong in short yardage and goal line situations.

I never thought Ron Dayne would amount to anything.

These are my opinions. We will find out soon enough if I am correct on Jacobs or not.
nice backpedal  next time if you are just spouting baseless opinions, you may want to label them as such. some people around here actually take what you staff guys say as gospel.

It'll be interesting to see what "goalline" means. Does Tiki get pulled from the 10 in...doubtful. Does he get pulled from the five in...maybe. Does he get pulled from the 3 in...likely.
:goodposting: I can see Coughlin pulling Tiki every single time when the ball is literally on the goaline but from the 3 on out I think he goes with his veteran Pro Bowler over a rookie.

what are you talking about? why are my opinions baseless?let me ask you...why does the fact that Dayne sucked suggest that Jacobs will suck? They are different players. What exactly does the past history with the Giants have to do with what will happen this year.Jacobs IS for real. Feel free to bump this post later after you've received whatever proof you are looking for.

Here are Barber's statistics from last year:Week1 @ PHI 9/125/1 (72 yard run) 5/75/0Week 2 vs WAS 18/42/0 2/27/0Week 3 vs CLE 23/106/1 (8 yard run) 3/48/0Week 4 @ GB 23/182/1 (52 yard run) 4/14/0Week 5 @ DAL 23/122/1 (3 yard run) 5/76/0Week 6 ByeWeek 7 vs DET 22/70/0 7/102/1 (62 yard reception)Week 8 @ MIN 24/101/2 (2 yard run, 5 yard run) 1/10/0Week 9 vs CHI 21/72/2 (3 yard run, 1 yard run) 4/59/0Week 10 @ ARI 21/108/1 (2 yard run) 5/52/0Week 11 vs ATL 21/107/0 3/24/0Week 12 vs PHI 19/110/0 1/9/0Week 13 @ WAS 15/38/0 0/0/0Week 14 @ BAL 19/55/1 (1 yard run) 0/0/0Week 15 vs PIT 18/76/1 (1 yard run) 5/38/0Week 16 @ CIN 22/109/1 (1 yard run) 2/14/0Week 17 vs DAL 24/95/1 (3 yard run) 3/21/1 (3 yard pass)So Barber scored 13 rushing TDs and 2 receiving TDs. Of those scores, 11 came from inside the 5. One was a reception but if we assume Jacobs is actually an effective goal line vulture, then they would probably not give Barber any receptions inside the 5 this year.If history repeats and Barber plays at the same level as last year, he would have 4 TDs. He had 2096 total yards last year, and they would probably fall by a small margin due to the carries by Jacobs in short yardage situations. If Barber were to lose 200 yards by missing out on short yardage carries, including some on third down situations between the 20s were he might have made big gains, that still adds up to around 1900 total yards and 4 TDs. looking at last year, those numbers would place Barber in 9th or 10th spot among RBs and he would be worthy of a late first round pick.If Jacobs has a few fumbles, Coughlan may revert to Barber as he was reliable last year.Eli Manning started from Week 11. In Barber's starts up to that point, he posted 184/908/9 rushing and 36/463/1 receiving. In the final 7 games he posted 138/590/4 rushing and 14/106/1 receiving. So Barber's ppg dropped from 17.2 with Warner to 14.4 with Eli Manning under center. It should be noted that those games were against extremely tough defenses and that Manning's level of play should improve with experience and familiarity with the system, so Barber's drop off in performance need not be a permanent one.

Here are Barber's statistics from last year:

Week1 @ PHI 9/125/1 (72 yard run) 5/75/0

Week 2 vs WAS 18/42/0 2/27/0

Week 3 vs CLE 23/106/1 (8 yard run) 3/48/0

Week 4 @ GB 23/182/1 (52 yard run) 4/14/0

Week 5 @ DAL 23/122/1 (3 yard run) 5/76/0

Week 6 Bye

Week 7 vs DET 22/70/0 7/102/1 (62 yard reception)

Week 8 @ MIN 24/101/2 (2 yard run, 5 yard run) 1/10/0

Week 9 vs CHI 21/72/2 (3 yard run, 1 yard run) 4/59/0

Week 10 @ ARI 21/108/1 (2 yard run) 5/52/0

Week 11 vs ATL 21/107/0 3/24/0

Week 12 vs PHI 19/110/0 1/9/0

Week 13 @ WAS 15/38/0 0/0/0

Week 14 @ BAL 19/55/1 (1 yard run) 0/0/0

Week 15 vs PIT 18/76/1 (1 yard run) 5/38/0

Week 16 @ CIN 22/109/1 (1 yard run) 2/14/0

Week 17 vs DAL 24/95/1 (3 yard run) 3/21/1 (3 yard pass)

So Barber scored 13 rushing TDs and 2 receiving TDs. Of those scores, 11 came from inside the 5. One was a reception but if we assume Jacobs is actually an effective goal line vulture, then they would probably not give Barber any receptions inside the 5 this year.

If history repeats and Barber plays at the same level as last year, he would have 4 TDs. He had 2096 total yards last year, and they would probably fall by a small margin due to the carries by Jacobs in short yardage situations.

If you by some crystal ball know a player is going to only get 4 TDs....he NO way goes in the first round, and thats a fact.

Brandon Jacobs = Stacey MackThis is Tom Coughlin people! Remember all the years Freddy was pulled within the five. Coughlin likes a big, bruising runner to pound the ball in when up close. Ron Dayne looks the part, but any Giant fans knows he sucked at that. Coughlin knew too. With that said, Tiki will still get his yards on the ground and in the air. Just not as many TD's. I'm predicting 6-9 TD's for him this year.

It'll be interesting to see what "goalline" means.  Does Tiki get pulled from the 10 in...doubtful.  Does he get pulled from the five in...maybe.  Does he get pulled from the 3 in...likely.

you need flexibility in the redzone unless you're on the one or two. Tiki can take it outside with the run or pass, and run it inside.Sig Bet to anyone says Tiki has more than 6 TDs this year...who wants some?

Why so rude to the Rude Dude? Most of us already knew he was stating his opinion and not a known fact. If he knew all the outcomes this place would be called www.rudeguy.com, not footballguys.

I take Tiki as a great value pick. First Jacobs is rookie who just finished a college season, (could have an affect on conditioning as season goes on) I have no problem with him taking the banging on the goal line with a better then average chance for a rookie to get hurt, plus one or two fumbles on the goal line and Jacobs is done. In pre-season Jacobs has mostly played against second team defenses, I wait unit he plays against first string d's before I get worried. This would be different if this M. Faulk backing up, but it still is an untested rookie. But keep the chatter up, I take Tiki anytime after draft slot 1-7 :D

I have Barber in my performance league, and I have no worries. In my TD league another team dropped Jacobs this morning and I picked him up...now I am freaking.I'm in a win win situation :hey:

Len Pasquarelli writes: …please, don't mistake him for Dayne. Although Jacobs' size is undeniable, his frame is so long that there isn't any fat, and the guy isn't all that thick in the butt and the thighs, as one might expect. He has an upright running style and, in a Monday afternoon practice, twice got to the perimeter with seemingly little effort. "He is more than just a power guy," Barber said.If Len is impressed, so am I.

I have always liked Tiki, and it's clear he is always undervalued. However, I do see a fall this year. I think the Jacobs threat is real. And Manning doesn't make me feel any better.
I picked Tikki over Westbrook :bag: To hear it confirmed by Tikki makes a difference. I want a do-over!!!

I surely hope this is the case.

Tiki can take it outside with the run or pass, and run it inside.
Jacobs isn't a typical slow, plodding power back. He has some wheels too.
The Ron Dayne Kool-Aid from a few years ago:"Giant RB Ron Dayne has looked great in camp thus far and is earning the respect of his teammates: "I'm just glad he's with us and somebody else has to deal with him," Pro Bowl linebacker Jessie Armstead said.

Since the minicamps, veterans have been most surprised by Dayne's excellent vision and his quick cuts in spite of his blocky frame. His thick body has raised questions about his quickness and speed since he was a grade-schooler, yet somehow he gets results. "I watched him in college and thought, 'Wow, he's kind of slow,"' guard Glenn Parker said. "But out here with him, he's much faster than I thought and he's much bigger than I thought. A lot of linemen and especially linebackers and safeties are going to regret hitting him." Dayne looked good in Saturday's scrimmage, breaking tackles en route to a 12-yard scamper and improvising a 1-yard touchdown run one play after incumbent starter Joe Montgomery was stuffed....

"He's fluid, so it doesn't look like he is running hard or working hard, but he is working and moving hard," said offensive tackle Lomas Brown, who used to block for Barry Sanders. "I think he is going to be a special talent, I really do. I'd be surprised if he wasn't, to be honest with you."'

I do think Jacobs gets work, but Tiki's still the man. They'll use Jacobs to spell him more this year. They'll bring in Jacobs in some goalline packages.

Once again Lhucks shows he doesn't know anything about RB's.Intersting how in THIS POST, he dropped Barber from 30% of his '04 TD's to over 50%.So, how much is a handfull? And what is "Goaline" to you?I love it. When someone points out that you're wrong, just change the definition.Like last year when his take on Chris Brown went from "He's not talented or fast enough to start in the NFL" to "He's too injury prone".Even though you said you'd take D.Foster over him.Barber in '05 = Barber in '03.

1) Jacobs is not Dayne2) Coughlin is not Fassel3) Coughlin picked Jacobs= Jacobs will be given opportunity

The good news about Barber:

2000: 1,725 total yards

2001: 1,442 total yards

2002: 1,984 total yards

2003: 1,677 total yards

2004: 2,096 total yards

He's clearly a lock to produce standout yardage totals on a yearly basis. He's too important to the Giants' offense as both a runner and receiver for that not to occur.

However, the bad news about Barber:

2000: 9 TDs

2001: 4 TDs

2002: 16 TDs

2003: 5 TDs

2004: 15 TDs

His TD production has been very inconsistent. If you want to take this to Eric Moulds-esque terms you could call Barber an even/odd performer when it comes to TDs which means 2005 potentially doesn't bode well for his TD output since he tends to slip in odd-numbered seasons.

What's more, Coughlin appears insistent upon finding a goal-line RB to replace Barber. So yes while all of the things we're hearing now with regards to Jacobs -- right down to Barber's comments about losing carries to Jacobs -- mirrors everything we heard last summer regarding Dayne, what cannot be ignored (or should not be ignored) is that Coughlin clearly wants to find someone to take Barber's place near the goal-line. Dayne was given that chance and flopped. Perhaps Jacobs will flop as well, but then Coughlin almost certainly will try to find someone else for the role. It's what he clearly prefers with his RB situation (his time with Fred Taylor and Stacey Mack in Jacksonville is further proof of that).

I think Barber is a solid RB2 option in all leagues due to his yardage potential. In point/reception leagues he's worth considering near the end of the first round due to his receiving skills. But no matter where you take him you need to brace yourself for the strong possibility his TD potential is going to take a hit this season -- perhaps by close to 50% compared to his 2004 output. Not only is there the Brandon Jacobs factor to contend with, but Barber's own history suggests he is not the most consistent performer when it comes to generating touchdowns.

As a sidebar to the main topic of this thread: if Jacobs does indeed get the goaline carries (and it appears he'll at least get a shot), do you guys envision a Zach Crockett/pre-Staley injury Jerome Bettis type season - simply goaline carries and very little else - or more of a Stacey Mack-type season in which he takes not only the goaline carries but also the occssional seriess here and there and puts up respectable numbers? It could be the latter due to Mack playing this role under Coughlin. If he plays the early-2004 Bettis role, his value is obviously not as great as if he really becomes a legit compliment to Tiki. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Either way I still like Tiki as a solid option due to his involvement in the passing game.Ren

If you take away five touchdowns from Tiki last year, where do you think he would have finished amongst RBs last year in ppr leagues?

Great stuff. Wow this guy must have really impressed to fool everyone. He must have had a great year last year. Oh wait he was in college. Hah!!! Let Tiki fall. He probably loses a few Td's but he will still get his including some huge 40 yarders. The giants will open up more this year especially with Plexiglass so Tiki will have a HUGE year. I think some people need to stop analyzing and actually watch football.

I don't really understand the connection.Just because Ron Dayne sucked doesn't mean that Jacobs will too.

Dayne, for all his size, was never a very good power runner. He was indecisive, slow, and spent way too much time dancing around behind the line.

Jacobs is the opposite of that. He's huge, quick through the hole, and is always looking to deliver a blow to defenders. He will run people over and move piles.

The team has always WANTED to spell Tiki in goalline situations but they never had a viable option. Also, Tiki struggled in short yardage situations last year so the team made an effort to bring in a RB who was a perfect fit for that role...that player is Jacobs.

Every single sign points to him getting the lion's share of goalline work. If anyone chooses to ignore it because of the bust that was Ron Dayne, so be it.

Tiki could still come through with another great year and a top-12 season...just don't expect 10 TDs from within the 5 again this year.

Don't forget Aaron that Dayne entered the NFL with a MUCH stronger pedigree than Jacobs. I'm not arguing that Jacobs is going to stink, but it's not like the Giants weren't giddy about grabbing Dayne when he came into the league too.

This is a simalar situation just like Deshaun Foster saying he will be a backup. Come on have you seen Deshaun Foster run. If he is healthy he starts no way he backs up and old decripid Davis. Same thing here with Tiki. What is he going to say no Jacobs is basically going to stay on the bench during all goal line situations. I dont think Jacobs has even scored a Td in the preseason yet so maybe let him score before you throw 10 tds his way. I am just saying be realistic. Tiki wont score 15 but he will score 7-10 tds. I actually think Toomer may score some this year which will take away a few tds in general. The field is going to be spread with Plaxico. Also Eli has to begin to feel more comfortable. :hophead:

The only thing Dayne has in common with Jacobs, aside from Coughlin's obvious desire to have a goal line back, is the number 27. Jacobs was given that jersey number by design, in an effort to distance the franchise from the mistake that ate, aka Ron Dayne. That is where the comparisons should end. Jacobs is bigger, much faster and does not shy away from contact. Infact, in Jacobs 1st pre season game against the Browns, he broke more tackles than Dayne has in his entire NFL career. Aside from that jersey number, they are two vastly different players.

Tiki could still come through with another great year and a top-12 season...just don't expect 10 TDs from within the 5 again this year.
I have Tiki at 8 TDs.Where do you have him?
I think 6-8 total TDs is a pretty reasonable projection.
Note that 6-8 TDs likely would still be enough to make the top 10, even in non-PPR leagues.
Not likely. FBG has him for ~9-10 tds total and pegged at #10.

I hope the Jacobs talk continues so I can get Tiki at 2.10 in the WCOFF.
that's not going to happen. his receiving ability still makes him a 1st rounder.but, people expecting another top-10 season in standard leagues are going to be upset when Tiki starts getting pulled inside the 5.
Unless it's a PPR league, I don't like Tiki Barber in the first if he's not going to get the goaline carries. If Jacobs does indeed get those carries, Tiki's been drafted to high as most people have last year's numbers in mind, probably thinking there will be a little regression because it was such a solid year. But to see Tiki run the ball down to the 3 and then just get taken out............no way I spend a top 10 pick on that, no way.
I just started my draft this afternoon at ants and I had the 1.12 and 2.01 picks. It is a PPR league and the cretans above me took Jamal and Portis so I was happy. In no way did I expect to have the choice of two outta of Dillon, Tiki, Westy and JJ.I have a partner and we talked long and hard, we chose Tiki and JJ. In a PPR league, Tiki and Westy may have been the options, but I still like JJ's 30 carries a game and 40-50 receptions, and I wanted a young horse to go with the vet.

Now I see this and think, damn maybe I should have taken Westy---wrong!! I will stick to my guns. Tiki has proven he can hold up now and get over the line, not to mention I expect him to catch 60-70 this year versus the 50, putting him in the top 5 still in a PPR league.

We will see what happens, but I stand behind the pick--viva la Tiki!!

agreed. and he flopped.that should have no bearing on Jacobs future prospects. I'm not predicting Jacobs to become a top-20 fantasy back anytime soon or even a starter. Simply saying that he should be able to hold down the goalline and short yardage work, which is exactly what the Giants want from him.

Owners draft Tiki for his yardage. His TD total will range anywhere from 4 to 14, I don't really know... nobody does.14TDs is only 60 fantasy points more than 4TDs That's 3.75 fantasy points per week. It's the 1600+ yards that you count on.and for some people, the 60+ receptions (PPR).Brandon Jacobs may be great. But until he plays a single real NFL down, I'm not gonna' buy into the hype. We've heard about his 40 times. We've heard about his massive frame. But it takes more than sexy 40-times and a big build to get it done in the Red Zone.Does he fumble?Does he have good hands?Does his upright running style expose him to monster hits?Does he have good field vision?Does he pick up his blocking assignments? And finally... I didn't see/hear the PTI interview. Some have said that Tiki made the comment in jest... you know, with a *wink wink* to the fantasy loons.

I TiVo PTI. He was not winking or joking. He was just being honest.

:goodposting: I was just going to say this. Aaron you know that jacobs is going to be the answer how? Dayne was picked very high because a lot of people thought he was going to be the real deal. Now all of the sudden Jacobs is a 270 pound Rb that has it all? All Rbs get a breather. Every year Dayne was going to spell Tiki at the goaline and that never panned out. This one might not either. We shall see.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game.If you drafted him, suck it up and move on. If you haven't drafted yet, adjust accordingly.

Tiki Barber was the guest for the five good minutes segment on PTI this afternoon. When asked yabout his own fantasy football outlook his reply was ominous at best for Tiki Barber owners:

"I'm the same guy, I work just as hard. The problem with it for fantasy guys is that we have a guy like Brandon Jacobs now who is 6'4 270 pounds whose going to get all the goal line touches. So, I've got to score from 20 yards out or I'm going to hurt you in fantasy."
To be fair, the whole interview had somewhat of a joking atmosphere. Tiki said the above while laughing, and had a big smile on his face. What I read into that is the following: this really isnt breaking news. Everyone knows Jacobs will get a look this year, just like Dayne got a long look last year. But whether or not Jacobs will succeed as the short yardage back, not even Tiki knows. It all depends on their production in real-game situations. Thats why he answered in such a candid, offbeat manner, imo. Its pure speculation, not only from an FF persepctive, but from a real world Football persepctive.Nothing to see here. Good interview btw.

<_<

I'm in a 2pt per recept league and the only thing I have to worry about with Tiki is if Manning learns how to throw it out of the backfield. It didn't seem like Jacobs was being put in short yardage situations with the 1st team offense this preseason. Maybe once or twice. He was coming in as the third back behind Cloud. That must mean something.

I do see a fall this year.
with all due respect, SLBD, Tiki was RB2 last year @ 299.6, 6.2 points behind RB1 Alexanderwith LT losing a few TD's to Gates and the Padre off the last month, he took #2 by default...there is no where for him to go but down

the question is--how far?

deduct 10 TD's and a couple hundred yards, Tiki yeilds ~ 220 FF points, RB8 right behind Rudi's totals from last year

Tiki in mid 2nd is a steal...as usual

Just because Ron Dayne sucked doesn't mean that Jacobs will too.

Dayne, for all his size, was never a very good power runner. He was indecisive, slow, and spent way too much time dancing around behind the line.

Jacobs is the opposite of that. He's huge, quick through the hole, and is always looking to deliver a blow to defenders. He will run people over and move piles.
Don't forget Aaron that Dayne entered the NFL with a MUCH stronger pedigree than Jacobs. I'm not arguing that Jacobs is going to stink, but it's not like the Giants weren't giddy about grabbing Dayne when he came into the league too.
agreed. and he flopped.that should have no bearing on Jacobs future prospects.
I clearly stated that it didn't. My point is that this isn't the first time the Giants have had a top draft pick at RB they were all giddy about. And keep in mind Dayne did produce decently as a rookie ... i.e. the "Thunder & Lightning" backfield. He didn't produce as they hoped but he wasn't a complete dog initially. That came later.

I'm not predicting Jacobs to become a top-20 fantasy back anytime soon or even a starter. Simply saying that he should be able to hold down the goalline and short yardage work, which is exactly what the Giants want from him.
And as others have said, this isn't the first time there's been a RB expected to do those things instead of Barber with the Giants. I think Jacobs may just be the real thing as well, but you have to admit that it does get funny hearing the same old thing with regard to Barber every single season.

I think it's pretty obvious that Tiki wants Jacobs to be the short yardage/goal line back so he can take the pounding and get the tough yards, keeping Tiki fresh to run in space between the 20s. That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to happen - he's wanted this for at least a year now. Coughlin will go with whomever is effective. For the poster saying Jacobs = Stacey Mack and yelling about "all the years Taylor was pulled at the goalline" - there was only 1 year in Coughlin's tenure in Jacksonville where he pulled his primary back regularly for a goal line back. Jacobs will have to prove he can get it done, which is not a given.

From the Bob Henry training camp report, this was reported along with Tiki's statements about Jacobs being the GL guy :

Tiki Barber looks ready for another big year. Every year there’s another guy who threatens to steal Tiki’s thunder. Brandon Jacobs is supposed to be that guy - this year. Friday night Barber appeared in mid-season form running 13 times for 47 yards. Barber also caught a pass for 15 yards. Brandon Jacobs ran six times for 12 yards – 11 of which came on one run. Jacobs is sporting #27 and looking good in camp, but he’s no guarantee that he will take any or all of Tiki’s opportunities at the goal line.

Let's wait and see, that's all I'm saying.

If you changed the second line of your thread title to "On PTI he said Dayne may get the goal line", you would've echoed the "Shark" sentiment a year ago. And thanks largely to that miscalculation, Tiki ended up being one of the blockbuster value picks of 2004.

Tiki's value is not in his goal line work. It's that he's the main cog in that offensive machine, who will catch 50+ passes, average 4.5+ yards or better per rush, and get you some TDs in line with 2nd tier TD performers.

I'll say it again: Ron Dayne was a fraud as a power back. Jacobs is not. IMO, of course. This has little to do with Barber or the Giants as an organization. It has everything to do with who the goalline back is.
