Online poker is back in the US, a start? (1 Viewer)

I have heard that Nevada worded their legislation such that down the road they could link up with other states that allow online poker to increase the player pool. Theoretically if all 50 states were on board you could have a national pool of players to draw from.

the only thing i could see being a boom for poker would be that there could be mobile apps that they didn't have before.. and i could see a whole lot of donkeys playing on smoke breaks, dump breaks, in between classes.
BINGO... unfortunately apple would block this so it would be an android only thing. That could take some of the wind out of the sails of it... but also push a lot of people TO android.
Poker on mobile devices has always been a no go. Collusion city.
Why is it more collusion than laptops or netbooks?
I would guess that it's because with mobile devices, everyone has a different IP address. If it is a laptop or netbook with wireless card, it is also a mobile device. But laptops connecting to a hotspot all get the same IP I believe. You could have everyone congregate at a house with mobile devices and verizon aircard connections and each one has a different IP. Use laptops with connection to the wifi at that house and everyone has the same IP. If everyone has the same IP and different screen names, I would think it will be flagged at the poker site.
If people really wanted to collude it's not difficult to get individual IP's. I would be surprised if mobile gaming isn't the future. Collusion is always going to be a risk regardless of platform.

What is Apple's policy on this? Why would they block this but allow a million other apps/games designed to empty your wallet?
Apple prohibits any apps involving gambling or pornography. It's kinda a drag as far as I'm concerned as The platform is absolutely RIPE for both to thrive. Sure, you can use an app for either, but the improvement in user experience of an actual app over browsers is pretty significant.

It's a rather significant flaw in Apple's ecosystem IMO. One of several right now.

:goodposting:It's remarkably easy with tethering/hotspots or 3G/4G enable tablets these days... No doubt that no matter WHAT the online poker sites do, collusion will become a massive problem once legalized fully. I'd be amazed if it wasn't a huge problem right now in other countries. It's just very very easy.

The only way to watch it is to track who sits with who and follow the money / track betting patterns.

This is this beauty of playing online. There's a data trail to be followed. Its how the guy that was able to see hole cards was discovered. As long as hand histories are public record players will police the games themselves when things aren't right.

I can't imagine Apple allowing porn apps. Just doesn't fit their image. Gambling maybe.

For anyone interested in the story, POTRIPPER was the name of the player that was discovered by other players on Absolute Poker.

1) this only works when its a national/global game. 2) Online poker will never be close to what it was in the party poker days... the majority of casual players washed out and have lost interest as the fad is "dead". The game only truly thrives when there is a lot of fresh blood coming in. When it does FINALLY go live nationally, you'll see an initial rush of players maybe equivalent to 20-25% of what we saw during the boom.... and 75% or more of those folks will wash out promptly due to going busto thanks to the horrible ratio of Very good to excellent players vs Dead money out there now. RIP Online Poker.
Good times. :(

It seems like there was a guy from another site that did this as well, but it's been a long time ago. He was taking down guys like Sheets continually until he got caught.

I'm just glad they got it in Nevada first. Those poor people, no other way to get your poker fix there. Oh, wait...

Come on their had to be lot's of people doing this. Just rare to find someone smart enough to hack the system and dumb enough to win every hand.

Uhm, no. These guys were software developers for the sites themselves. They weren't hackers. They were the programmers. The stuff was heavily montiored. There were'nt "lots" of people doing this.

The story didn't cover it, but isn't there a poker playing FFA guy in Vegas that plays professionally, Asani Fisher I think is the name? He may be able to fill in details if he stops by.
last I heard, Assani moved to Mexico so he could play online with no restrictions.
I just can't imagine wanting to play poker that bad. Even if you get rich doing it.
La Paz, Mexico is not bad at all, especially when you literally live across the street from the Pacific Ocean. View from my rooftop(where I play poker all day long):

Seriously that looks great, hope all is going well.

 hey as long as you're happy that's all that matters. Wouldn't be my bag, that's all.

To be honest I do like Canada better than Mexico and I"m definitely looking forward to getting back to Vegas....with that said, the ban on online poker has forced me to travel a bit, and while its annoying on the surface, its resulted in me living in some places that I might've never otherwise experienced.

Mexico is definitely a bit poorer than the US and theres many things you take for granted in the US that you don't have here...but its cheap to live, its a safe area(very touristy), and the beaches/weather are awesome.

The time has passed.
I disagree. When ever this starts back up, and its more when than if imo, this will be popular. Might not be huge like the Moneymaker affect back in 2003-2005 time frame, but there is now an entire generation of kids who missed out and will jump in if it is made easily available.

The attendance at the WSOP continues to be impressive especially considering it is no longer jam packed with internet qualifiers, indicating the game at the highest levels is still viable.

Won't someone think about the children!!!!!!???!!?!??

What a bunch of morons. They have no clue about the complexities of this issue. ####. ####. ####.

I don't know, maybe parents should be responsible for monitoring their childrens on-line activity. Nah, the government would be better.

A few of the guys at 2+2 commented on the hearing as it was live. I was there too. Some were optimistic about what was said. In my opinion it sounded like every reason was listed to completely ban online gaming. I think the optimistic approach looked it as reasons that legislation is needed and we just need to be sure there's a special carve-out for poker as its a game of skill.

At some point the potential dollars are going to turn the tide. People with lots of money are "talking" to Congress about this. Money makes things happen.

That hearing was a farce. Just making things up to obstruct any kind of forward movement. Still a lobbying issue and you can't out lobby the NFL. I'll be playing online poker and betting NFL games this season in protest of their position on gambling.

I agree, he is surprisingly powerful. I'm more than a little amazed that the GOP has so far been able to withstand all the public speeches that Obama, Pelosi, and Reid have made endorsing online gambling.

.
2011 is when the admin worked with the Justice Dept to get the ruling mentioned in the article that allowed states to start working on legalizing. So I would guess Obama has done more than speechify. Pelosi has been a long time opponent. Reid has pushed to expand online gambling with bills in the past.

Let me see if I have this straight: you are whining because Democratic politicians arent vigorous enough advocates for online gambling in comparison to the GOP politicians and the billionaire scumbag Republican casino owner who employs them who are keeping online gambling illegal?

You make so much sense with your false equivalency doodoo reasoning. Nicely done.

This political topic gets me frustrated more than any other. Members of both parties have taken dollars to sell their political soul with regard to online poker. Not gambling, but poker.

The "what about the children" argument is the worst. It shows a complete lack of understanding with regard to the topic and means that someone is entirely rooted in some other reason for their opposition, usually money or some form of moralistic fervor.

Online poker is my only experience working as a lobbyist in my state capital (Olympia, WA). Getting to see how lobbyist groups fill legislators with free food and drink in "the castle" next to the capitol building opened my eyes. Its a giant house next to the government campus where lobbyist smooze legislators. Yes, a house with a ton of empty rooms in it. Amazed to see how many secretaries and government workers looked like super models. The entire experience just felt slimy.

Goodness, you're confused. I'm suggesting the Democrats are, for the most part, just as complicit in denying Americans their freedom in this area. I'm suggesting that you know this full well, yet refuse to criticize the Democrats for the same thing, simply because of the letter next to their name.

I follow the issue closely and I'm a member of the Poker Players Association (PPA).

I know its Adelson from The Sands on a national level. Here in my state (WA) it was the Democrats that screwed us. Indian casino lobbyists wrote the bill and got it passed through Margarita Prentice (D) outlawing all forms of online gambling. My own representative (D) apologized to me personally years later after that bill passed. She didn't understand what she was voting for at the time. Her son was super pissed too (we both teach and coached basketball at the time).

I know that any nation wide bill trying to block online gaming is going to come from a Republican.

That sucks for Washington state. Nationally and in most states it is the Republicans fighting against online poker. Sheldon Adelson and the other Rich Conway anti-online poker GOP KooKs are funding many state efforts to keep it illegal while they lobby hard on the national level, as well.

Actually despite the fact that Obama and Reid have been open to it the majority of congressional Democrats voted to ban all online gaming. Now my guess is they knew it was a safe vote on the amendment because it was going down in flames and they wanted to look family friendly. But still you look at the roll call and the majority of the yeas were Democrats. Casino operators pay them as well.

You must hate Sheldon Adelson, then. I assume you will also be against his bought and paid for GOP Presidential nominee in 2016. Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Chris Christie and John Kasich are all in Vegas sucking his toes for money.

Whichever party is against online poker, I am 100% against. Currently the republicans lead that race. Anyone stopping me from making money can suck the #### right out of my ###. I hope this Adelson homo strokes out and flops out of his wheelchair with drool pouring out of his mouth.

Yeah, but you are not a Democrat...hilarious from you for sure.

I dont whine about the Republican right. I am anti-KooK. It just so happens that almost all of the KooKs right now are Republicans. Not my fault.

Please show me one other person like Sheldon Adelson, who the Republican Presidential nominee kingmaker, who is funding anti-online poker legislation nationally and all over the country at the state level, and I will hate their guts too.
