Revenant leading in noms? It wasn't *that* good.

Weak year for movies. Nothing was great.
Others have argued with me but I think only 8 best film nominations when they can go 10 only shows it was a weak year for films.

H8 was nominated for score, cinematography, and a best acting nod with Jennifer Jason Leigh, should have gotten a nomination for best film and best original screenplay IMO, that would have been 5 overall. As is I think it will still walk away with 2 big Oscars for score and also for JJL which I can't wait to see her accept the award. I have always always always liked her and I know she ain't cute to everyone but I always had a crush on her as a kid.
Not even close, imo. And Im a QT fan.
H8 was a top notch made film. Just the actual making of it, even the snow and the snow flurries coming in the cracks of the wood inside the cabin looked real. Everything looked very real to me.

We can agree to disagree, saw the H8 in the 70MM and thought the look of the film was pretty awesome. I am also a big fan of MMFR and want to see Leo's film this coming weekend.
What a strange criteria.

"Yeah, the movie was 135 minutes of people taking a dump, but it was filmed in 70mm so it all looked very real." :cue Oscar:

I wonder what it was about Sicario the Academy didn't like. One of the best movies I have seen in the last few years. I guess there were two or three too few car chases for them. ;)

They have up to 10 to use, and I am honestly surprised Sicario, Inside Out, or even Hateful Eight aren't on the list.
I'm not; it really wasn't that good of a flick. One of Tarantino's worst offerings (IMO).

I got Leo as a -2500 favorite at the one book with posted odds.

I think it's a lock as well, but that's an expensive price if you are wrong.

It was nominated for cinematography.

I agree, but was still surprised it wasn't.

Just saw The Revenant. It truly was one of the best made films I have ever seen. It deserves the cinematography award and I felt the action or fighting scenes felt real a d I could understand what was happening vs a Michael Bay film just for comparison.

That said I did not feel the story was all that much, long times can pass between dialogue. I had issues with a couple of scenes specifically when the director makes the decision to show you its all a movie when some blood hits the camera and the scene keeps going, I thought that was a poor choice. That said the film has some breath taking scenes and I wanted to choke Tom Hardy within an inch of his life and then stab him to death with a dull butter knife.

Also Leo made an awful quick recovery for a person who looked like he was losing blood at an alarming rate but it is a movie and we were reminded of that.

12 Oscar Nominations, encourage all to see it as I think it will walk away with quite a few that night. Hardy will not beat Stallone though.

I really hope there's some true backlash against this Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett crap.

Protesting something as inconsequential as equality in Oscar nominations just shows the world that you're the bitter racists.

Anomalisa should win (it wont) best animated movie. It should also have been nominated for best adapted screenplay and best picture.

And what des complaining about something as inconsequential as complaining about equality in Hollywood make one?

What with this black nominee stuff?

There are no fat one either. Why don't fat people get mad
I see complaints all the time that fat and/or ugly people are under represented in the movies. I complain about the over representation of hot chick sports announcers and news readers.

Just watched Beasts of No Nation last night. Great movie. Cant believe it wasn't nominated for best film or best supporting actor whoever that dude is.

This does look good.

I think the bigger issue with this movie getting nominations is that it bypasses theaters and the old farts voting don't like that.

I haven't been following the "too white" stuff all that closely. Who are "they" upset about not getting nominated? Did they tell us which white guy wasn't deserving of a nomination? That's the beauty of it all. For someone else to get nominated, one of the others would have to be "snubbed".

Ryan Coogler (director) and Michael B. Jordan for Creed (only Stallone was nominated). Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation. There had been some Best Picture buzz for Straight Outta Compton. Obviously, Jada thought her husband should have been nominated for Concussion (he was not a favorite as near as I can tell).

As I said, someone else needs to be removed than.

Of course, they could have nominated Straight Outta Compton as they didn't use all ten spots this year. I thought Creed was "OK" and felt the same about Jordan.

Losing loads of respect for Spike Lee. I'm all for protesting and making your voice heard but this just feeds the fires and continues to push racism in this country. To openly complain or cry racism in 2016 in a field that is driven by creativity and performance art, has likely the most open minded group of Hollywood Progressives and you are going to cry KKK here basically?

How awful and should be ripped apart in the media for what it is. I have a lot of respect for Lee's films and have loved many of them over the years, thought Inside Man was a rebirth for him a few years back but this is terrible on his part.

Not thrilled with Pinkett Smith either but Lee is more vocal and a stronger activist. You want to be honored, put something on screen worthy of praise. Tired of the Academy giving these awards to minorities just because they are minority, cheapens the awards themselves.

And is Chris Rock in a tough spot or not? He' going to have to make at least five or six jabs on this issue during the show or he'll be criticized by people like Spike Lee

Its up to Chris Rock to decide if he cares or not. I'm guessing he doesn't care and will do the show the way he wants to.

50 Cent is begging him to not even do the show.

Is will smith some serious actor now?

If Paul giamatti didn't get nominated ten years ago for sideways, I'm sorry, no one has any argument.

Tom cruise has no oscar.

Jim Carrey has no oscar

Hell, LEO has no oscar. All have spent their time chasing serious roles.

Will did Ali and Concussion and thinks he's Sidney pointer

which of the 3 black directors who have ever been nominated in the last 87 years are you tired of the Academy nominating because they are minorities?

which of the 4 actors and 1 actress that have won Best Actor/Best Actress, won because they were black?

Which of the 2 screenwriters that won because the Academy is giving awards to minorities?

your examples of people being slighted are Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey?

For people of his stature and profile, yes.

These are movie stars who sometimes take a "serious turn". With respect to men , the academy hasn't shown much interest in rewarding best actor stars. I lump will smith in wth them. As a star. Not because he's black.

That very specific response leads me to believe that some of the supporting roles, in your opinion, were. Could be wrong.

I wish they were specific with their outrage. If Will is in...who is out.
I'm withholding judgment until I see Concussion.

So far, I have seen two of the five nominated for Best Actor - Matt Damon and Eddie Redmayne. I don't bump either one for Michael B. Jordan (Creed).

I think he has better acting chops than those two guys. See: Six Degrees of Separation, Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness.

I haven't seen Concussion, no idea if he was snubbed. Also, I'm not exactly defending Spike Lee and Smith's wife, but the Academy hardly has a history of supporting minority talent. IMO, the real complaints are that there aren't enough black directors, writers, and actors, etc given opportunity, not that there isn't enough winning awards.

No, I wasn't going to list every category, I just looked at a few nominations. My point was MOP claims of Academy Awards being given to minorities because they are a minority, hasn't happened.

Cruise, Carrey, and Smith all blow. None of them deserve Oscars.

I'd like to see Will Smith, his ##### of a wife and snotnose kids all get in a rowboat and paddle themselves straight to hell.

Spotlight was excellent.

But my god McAdams part was nothing. Completely forgettable.

Jada Pinkett owned her magic mike scenes.

For a black actor either u put up the winning role or u get nothing. You don't get these soft nominations like McAdams got.

To be fair, if you read Lee's post, it's more about what gets green lit at the studios than it is about the awards themselves.
