What do the American men need to do to not suck at this (3 x 3), do you think?

call in the NBA dawgs = automatic gold

my team (of those not on the main team)

Banchero

Might be hard to find NBA guys with egos that can handle this.
Men and women 3x3 largely struggle because the team has to have players play in enough international 3x3 to qualify.

Women aren't going to do it because they don't have time (there's a reason the top 2 players for qualifiying are international or in college).
Men don't have time and there just isn't enough money in it to make it worth it.

Also, it's absolutely exhausting, you have to play defense, there are no plays off, and nowhere to hide on defense.

Not a chance in hell that somebody making $40 million a year is going to fool with this.

I don't know who the female announcer is for track and field, but really they need to have better tryouts for this. Pure cringe.

G Leaguers maybe?

Almost NBA guys?

I could see that. 2 of the 4 players have to qualify playing in enough events. So, at least 2 of the 4 players aren't going to ever be "blue-chippers".
Great NBA players just aren't going to play in the 3x3 FIBA circuit, for many valid reasons.

But they could get 2 and then bring in 2 NBA ringers.

Sort of what the women's team does. This year, the women had HVL (college), Brink (college), and Ciera Burdick (international) that all had time to qualify. American Pros just don't have the time to play in a bunch of international competitions. They brought in Rhyne Howard, and then when Brink got hurt, they brought in Dearica.

They are still coming together and we'll see how they do.

But I agree that the US certainly has the talent to pull it off even if we have to get creative.

Seems like it would be a lot of fun to organize this at the city level, so say in 2028 all the various US cities send their best three-man team to quals, which might be more fun than the Olympic event itself - watching a team from Oakland, CA take on the best of the Bronx for the right to fight for a gold medal. I'd watch that.

Looking at a couple other teams in this on the men's side - Latvia finished first, undefeated. None of their 4 guys play basketball professionally - no current team or club affiliation at all. Same with second place Netherlands and third place Lithuania. These guys just play international 3x3. There must be a sponsorship or other arrangement that funds their careers.

Maybe they could just send the reigning champion of Ice Cube's Big3 league to the Olympics every 4 years. Get some sponsors on board to make it worthwhile.

What do indoor volleyball and water polo players do all year? Are there well paying European professional leagues for these sports? I watched a lot of volleyball today - 3 awesome matches.

For volleyball, the men and women all play professionally for clubs, mostly in Europe. I'm not sure about the pay. The biggest leagues seem to be in Italy, Turkey, Japan, Poland.

Men's team: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_men's_national_volleyball_team#Current_squad

Women's team: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_women's_national_volleyball_team#Current_squad

I work with a personal trainer twice a week who played at a smallish D1 school and went to play professionally in Norway, then Spain before coming home to start a gym. She would never sniff the US team but was able to have a short but awesome time for a few years playing abroad.

Volleyball also has a Nations League each year that has a 3 month season from May to July. Then a world championship or other tourneys that last into September I think. So the national team plays together half the year, more unity there than in something like soccer where their games are scattered, and most of their practice time is with their club teams.

Very few opportunities for men in volleyball. Only a couple dozen D-I schools have men’s teams due to Title IX (balancing women and men’s sports). A lot of players end up playing club ball at D-I schools or playing D-III (non-scholarship).

More good team sports tomorrow.

Women's volleyball quarterfinal against Poland tomorrow at 10am central (NBC).

Women's Soccer semi-final against Germany at 11am central (USA).

Men's basketball quarterfinal against Brazil at 2:30 central (USA).

Women's beach volleyball, Hughs/Cheng against Swizterland at 3pm (NBC).

So great. God next week is going to suck.

USA with more shot at gold tonight with Caroline Marks vs Tati west of brazil in surfing. Jacko should be the hands on favorite for the men.

Joe Turpel is brutal on the call though, he’s the joe buck of surfing :wall:

ok just threw 40 on a parlay of robinson and marks, fn gambling on surfing again :kicksrock:

Just saw Suni's beam. That was rough. :(

You know, I really kind of hate the beam because I just cringe at the possibilities of injury to the point of not wanting to watch it.

American Sarah Hildebrandt Is wrestling in the semi finals this afternoon! She came in as number 5 seed and had quite a day so far. Let's hope she keeps it going.

The number one seed and defending champion in the weight class was already eliminated in an upset today.

I'm watching replay of women's bouldering. You know how there is always the running joke that we should have a regular person in all these events so we can see just how difficult it is? Well, the first competitor out, from South Africa, is doing her best regular person impressions possible. I feel terrible for her. I know she is obviously an incredible climber, but she is out there flailing around like someone who has never climbed before

Germany making things tough on our US Women's soccer team. Had a couple of chances - one great chance, but it's not looking like their earlier match so far.

Switched to soccer after volleyball ended. About time Germany got a yellow. Three times in 10-15 minutes they ran through players without even coming close to playing a ball. They were good hits in the NHL but not soccer.

Rodman just got TRUCKED from behind. Was there even a foul? Let alone a yellow?

Did they fly some Copa refs over for the semifinals?
