***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (1 Viewer)

Anything good on today? So far it's just wrestling and I find Nascar (turn left) more interesting. (shout out to Jaysus 🍻)

Sydney dominates!!
That wasn't even close. She's amazing.
She is, and almost certainly would have won no matter what, but pretty sure something was wrong with Bol health-wise...that's the slowest she's run in a while, and she faded badly even though she usually finishes very strong.

Can't wait for Sydney to break 50 seconds!
I don't think so. I'm just guessing, but racing more than one event of that sort is very hard. That's why the American from the team bicycle pursuit wasn't going to do all of the cross-country race.

Surprise! She must be in amazing condition.
Yeah - seems like there's no hint of health problems so far. And you're right that the multiple events must take a toll...I assume there were heats + semifinals for both the 400 hurdles and the 400 relay...so potentially 6 races in less than 2 weeks if she ran in the relay heats.

The freestyle is more interesting than Greco-Roman for noobs like me, although that Cuban heavyweight Greco-Roman guy was awesome.
Otherwise, for me today -
men's volleyball playing Italy for Bronze this morning. I'm guessing the US men are pretty heavy underdogs.
US Women's basketball semifinals against Australia. Unlikely to be a close game but I'll have it on while working.
Women's bronze and gold finals in beach VB this afternoon. No US teams left but these should be awesome matches.

Gold Medal Men's Soccer at noon EDT

Mens 4 x 400 relay...

The 16 year old kid's going to have to do way better if the US is going to have a chance @ gold
a 47 second first leg isn't going to cut it after the first qualifying round. I'll give him a little break considering the enormity of the situation for such a young person. They always have the option of swapping out runners, but if they think this kid is going to be around for the long haul, nothing beats this type of low-impact (they were most likely going to qualify anyway) race for someone who is experiencing it for the first time.

Is nobody watching the B-Girls throw down?

Well, I tried it. I think I might have always thought this was dumb (to put into the Olympics) but I’ll leave open the possibility it’s an old guy thing. They even do that thing where the B-Girl not dancing circles the stage looking unimpressed with the one who is.

"breaking" is cool and all but it not only is not a "sport" but it's not an Olympic sport. What's next, rap battles? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rap_Olympics #getoffmylawn

Just tuned in; pretty good so far.
I turned it on at the start of the 3rd set. USA won the first two and got out to decent lead in set 3. Now Italy looks great and might force another set.
They're definitely not laying down.
Just looked at the scores of the first two sets. Both as close as you can get. Wish I had turned this on earlier.

crazy back and forth

That Italian lefty outside hitter was great. China women also had a left playing outside. Not sure I've seen that before.

Back when I was banked out I used to watch the MTV show with the team “modern dancing” and I remember being moved by one of them. I was neck deep in it, however, so take it for what it’s worth. But there were some performances that blew my mind.

Probably a similar way you judge skateboarding would apply.

Yeah, break dancing as an Olympic sport is obviously pretty dumb.

But IMO, its no less dumb than stuff like Ice Dancing (the people who aren't good enough to be singles are kicked out to pairs....the couples that aren't good enough to compete in pairs go to ice dancing. Its basically the JV game), dressage (horse dancing?) synchronized swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized diving

This one I don't get at all. It's been part of the games for 100+ years mostly because rich people need a way into the games. But it's not a human doing the work like I think all the other non-horse games are. It's like having shepherding as an event. Yeah, my dog corralled those sheep better than yours. :wall:

ETA ... i love me some Natalia Kaczmarek

I've ridden an actual horse 1 time as an adult (a giant clydesdale like trail horse out in Montana. Other than not panicking when the big guy half-stumbled over a couple of uneven areas, I didnt do anything but pull on the reins a little bit to direct him) and I honestly wonder what would happen if you gave me the gold medal horse, taught me the commands (honestly doesn't look like they're doing anything at all) and 6 months to get comfortable.

I'm sure there's someone on this board who grew up riding horses or has a kid that does this who will call me a moron, but it kinda seems like pretty much anybody who isn't really fat or scared of riding a horse could do it.

Horse JUMPING or racing? Definitely not. But just sitting up there issuing a few commands while the animal does a little dance that someone else trained it to do since birth? I kinda feel like just about anyone could compete if given the opportunity and a trained animal.

Way back when I hopped on a horse for a quick ride but before I could get started another horse came up and bit mine on the butt sending mine into a full run. What I didn't know was that the saddle wasn't cinched well and I ended up riding sideways until bailing. If only someone had gotten a video... 🤣

This short sleeved accounting guy with glasses has certainly jumped the shark for me. Is he really necessary? It's not an election here, are we this stupid?

I became curious to know if any country has dominated these Olympics so far. I tried to see if there was a correlation between population and metals won. Meaning, the countries with bigger populations would 'probably' have a bigger population pool to produce Olympic greatness. These are the 10 most populated countries, ranked by how many medals won per person in the country.

America is obviously cheating, and India is tragically underperforming.
