***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (3 Viewers)

The gold medal race really is back and forth. Every time I think they might pull away from China it tightens back up.

I became curious to know if any country has dominated these Olympics so far. I tried to see if there was a correlation between population and metals won. Meaning, the countries with bigger populations would 'probably' have a bigger population pool to produce Olympic greatness. These are the 10 most populated countries, ranked by how many medals won per person in the country.

America is obviously cheating, and India is tragically underperforming.

EDit: Oh wait, they were banned. I see now.

Their athletes that are there are registered as independent.

Well, the name of their country starts with Bang. Wonder how many women over there are named Ladesh.

Me earlier: "If they have break dancing, are they going to add ballet later?"

Me turning on Peacock multi-view and seeing 5 ballerinas dancing in unison on a court: "Oh my god they have ballet!?"

(It was halftime entertainment or something)

If that is how it works, I will NEVER step foot inside the capital of Thailand.

Think it’s the most densely populated country in the world and like 100% is considered urban.

Break dancing on the gold zone channel is like when they show jags titans on the red zone
Lending itself to so great tweets, tho. 😆

Just what the heck. Someone said she has been the #1 ranked breakdancer in Australia. Either she’s the only breakdancer in the country or that’s a straight up troll job.
I’ve been ranked as high as number 3 in Bangladesh

Why do they need to separate men's and women's breakdancing? It's all subjective anyway.
Like with any sport, the men are just more powerful and faster in all the movements. There's a lot of strength that comes with some breakdancing moves.

Would love to see a gender dispute in breakdancing where someone accuses a biological man of breaking as a woman to get a competitive advantage.

Was Spencer Lee tied 2-2 before losing or was the Japanese wrestler up 3-2? I thought it was 2-2, but his aggressive move was surprising if that was the case

He would have lost on criteria. There is no OT which I didn't know until they said near the end. He didn't do much the whole match, was looking forward to watching it. Was pretty disappointing.

So Lyles was diagnosed with covid two days ago...

Didn't realize you could still compete in that condition
And he’s out there breathing heavy, hugging and shaking hands with other competitors after the race. Not a wise move there by him…he’s gonna get flamed for it for sure.

Lyles is also the anchor in the upcoming 4x100 relay so who knows what’s gonna happen there.
if he is vaccinated and has covid but no fever/other symptoms then according to the CDC he would be fine to go about normal life and not worry about being around other vaccinated people. I just went through this a few weeks ago and learned a lot about what's allowed and what's not supposed to be
But now his coach is saying he had a 102 fever when he raced.

Heptathalon scoring is the greatest thing ever. Wish all sports did this, I’ve thought for a while that every shot in the nba should be scored on a decimal system according to the exact difficulty of the shot using dynamic statistical analysis

Heh, was watching re-air of the Canada-Brazil women's beach volleyball final.

Brandie (Canada) and a Brazilian player got in each other's faces at the net with a prolonged argument that had the other two players coming over to join them, and the down official getting between them to make sure they stayed apart. Brandie got a yellow card.

So as they finally went back to their sides, the stadium started playing John Lennon's Imagine (a very peaceful song about people getting along), which had even the players laughing, and the whole stadium singing the lyrics as they must have played half the song.

Whoever decided break dancing should be an Olympic sport is trying too hard to include anything that resembles people moving in any fashion be an Olympic sport.

Like, break dancing came out of a time where there was a big-bang collision of technology + music + soul + grit + hope and created this weird form of expression that anyone that saw it for the first time thought to themselves “holy hell this is the coolest thing I have ever seen”.

It was like watching the blues and jazz come to life in a three dimensional fashion.

And now the Olympics are saying they can judge THAT?!??

GTFO of here.

By 1924, 100 years ago, the Olympics had featured:

Basque Pelato (?)
Cricket
Croquet
Horse High Jump
Hot Air Balloon Racing
Live Pigeon Shooting
Motorboat Racing
Pistol Dueling
Polo
Plunge for Distance (Diving)
Rope Climbing
Swimming Obstacle Race
Tug of War

And as a test event in 1900 - Poodle Clipping

Times change, and so does the landscape of what we consider sport. We old codgers will just have to learn to deal with it.

I think I'm too old for this.

I called it the dumbest thing I've ever watched and my nephew yelled at me. So apparently I'm just an old man howling at the moon.
Howl on, buddy. It is dumb. And I like break dancing. They look like idiots. It's the bland version of actual street dancing.

Yeah, break dancing as an Olympic sport is obviously pretty dumb.

But IMO, its no less dumb than stuff like Ice Dancing (the people who aren't good enough to be singles are kicked out to pairs....the couples that aren't good enough to compete in pairs go to ice dancing. Its basically the JV game), dressage (horse dancing?) synchronized swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized diving
This one I don't get at all. It's been part of the games for 100+ years mostly because rich people need a way into the games. But it's not a human doing the work like I think all the other non-horse games are. It's like having shepherding as an event. Yeah, my dog corralled those sheep better than yours. :wall:

ETA ... i love me some Natalia Kaczmarek
Not even slightly accurate. It takes time for the horse and rider to work that well together. And the horse can't do any of that stuff by itself. A horse can't see the jumps when it gets to them. It is relying on and trusting the rider to cue the jump. And it is physically demanding for both horse and rider. Given how few of the Olympic competitors ride cleanly in the ring, plainly not just anyone can do that.

The ice dance stuff is wrong, too. Singles skaters don't get "demoted" to pairs. They aren't the same thing at all. And ice dancers aren't failed other skaters. (Not that I watch ice dancing.)
