***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (3 Viewers)

Women’s kayak cross is kind of crazy
It's back on at 9:30a ET this morning.

I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but it's an event I highlighted.

I have my iPad streaming Olympics alongside my laptop as I get through my e-mails and meetings today.
OMG, what an epic disaster from start to finish.

I love it! What a battle! People are getting paddles to the face, and others are almost getting decapitated by the front of someone elses kayak. It's as awesome as I expected it to be!

And they call the buoy thingies sausages. LOL. I mean it's appropriate because that's exactly what they like, but it's a :snicker: each time I hear it.

"Fitzgerald is going hard around the sausage!"

Olympic records being broken with almost every race in the Women's team sprint finals!

The 2024 Olympics marks the first time that the women will compete with three riders. ;)

There have been a lot of comments about the running surface being particularly fast.

On that topic, there's a great Ted Talk about the role of technology and specialization in athletics, addressing the topic of whether athletes are better, stronger, faster than they used to be, and why.

I recall one part of it looked at swimming and mapped the various drops in the world record, and then put up the different technology changes (low friction clothing, wave dampening stuff along the edges of the pool, etc) and showed how those sorts of changes tended to spur the larger scale changes in world records.

This is the first year that I've really watched field hockey, it's wild the amount of complaining that goes on after every whistle. (n)

I noted a few pages ago that they should have hired John Henson as an announcer for this. They also really should have put big red balls in there somewhere.

Always amazed the see the steeplechase race is still a thing.

I love the sports that you know have been around for hundreds of years...makes the olympics more unique than say a collegiate track meet.

Steeplechase was born out of horses racing from one barn to another in Ireland, having to jump over creeks and such. It was the genesis for what you see now in the Olympics and made its debut in the 1900 Olympics.

The more you know.

I'm having trouble finding the men's volleyball. My DirecTv says it is supposed to be volleyball, but it is showing soccer. Anyone able to watch?

3x3 hoops - basket is worth 1 (inside the arc) but if you get fouled you get 2 free throws worth 1 each? So getting fouled can be worth more than making the bucket.

Defalco just hit like 7 foot line on a spike.

I never seem to see him until he hits it, like the guy has stealth mode or something.

Duplantis had the WR and caught the bar with his...hand. Plenty of height over the bar with his torso and other bits

Wrestling starts today, I am excited about that. Men's freestyle is my favorite, and I am not sure that starts until later this week. I am hoping to see USA grab a few gold medals.
P.S. Amit Elor is wrestling today, she is probably the best in the world right now (maybe ever?) and has to be the favorite to win even though she has a tough draw.
UPDATE: Amit Elor is wrestling for gold tomorrow! She outscored her opponents by a combined score of 28-2 today... and the 2 came from the #1 seed. She is going to be a legend.

Some amazing volleyball the first two sets and then we get two whiffs on attacks (one by each team) in the early going of the third set.

Just catching up on this Nigeria-Canada game from yesterday (Women's BBall).

I want the US to get 8 straight, and I can't root against Australia. But man I've got a foot on this Nigeria bandwagon. First African country to make the Olympic quarterfinals, men or women.

It would be so fun if Nneka could be with them.
No conversation about Olympic snubs can be had without starting with Nneka.
12 years of snubs despite great success playing for Team USA. And of course, she was the MVP of the WNBA in an Olympic year (2016) and still got snubbed.

In 2021, after (like Arike) she realized she was never going to be on a US Olympic team, she tried to play for Nigeria (where her parents are from). In an absolute shocker, FIBA denied her request to play for Nigeria. All those years playing for, and in, the US cost her a chance to play for Nigeria.

This Nigeria team plays their *** off, and it would be fun to see what they could do with Nneka on the team.

Either way, it would be fun to see Nigeria end up on the podium.
