Path of Exile (free to play & now on Xbone) (2 Viewers)

Found a great tool: Skilltree PlannerScreenshotInteractive light version of the skill tree that has a running tally of all the bonuses from it.

So I created a Marauder, cleared Crossroads and there was no Way Point anywhere. Does it not show up until I complete a quest or something?
The crossroads waypoint is at the crossroads intersection :lmao: Two roads run through crossroads, west to east is from town to the first bandit. From north to south is the place where you get the baleful gem and the south is felshrine ruins (which leads to the church dungeon).
How does the skilltree exe work? I downloaded it, entered my character name, and my browser opened up with what looked like code. The window says "Save it to the data folder beside this executable - it's name should be 'get-items'" but I don't see that anywhere.

Steps to perform for two different operationsSkill Tree importing

1) open .exe file

2) choose your character from CharType at top of .exe

3) open a web browser and go to your Path Of Exile login page and login in

4) click on your character at top of web brower screen

5) click on the passive skill tree tab in middle of browser

6) copy the address from the address bar and paste it into the area in the .exe file marked LoadBuild at bottom of .exe

7) Now click on LoadBuild and you should see your skill tree come in

Items Importing

1) Get back to the part where above you got the browser to open with a long string of data

2) Copy that data entirely into a file called get_items

3) Place get_items into the folder called Data where your executable lives

4) now click on Load Items near bottom in the .exe and it should pull in your items

Notes:

a) I removed any file extension from get-items (it was originally "get-items.txt")

b) I think any time you use the .exe after the setup it should always pull in your latest skill tree but I am unsure about the items. I have a feeling you may have to perform the steps in Items Importing above each time but I am not totally positive yet

c) I am unsure if step 2 in Skill Tree Importing above is needed but it does not hurt the process

Let me know if this helps

Act 3, level 30 - mobs are starting to get pretty tough, I think I need more defense. current build
I see you have ghost reaver, are you using evasion/energy shield or armor/energy shield? If you're using eva/ES id recommend grabbing iron reflexes.
I haven't really thought of Iron Reflexes, but I gotta tell you playing my Mara, he doesn't take any damage at all, not sure if it is the high armor or high resists he has, probably a combination of both. Was trying to focus primarily on Energy Shield, looking to get Vaal Pact and CI once my ES is high enough. Picking up as much life leech armor I can find.I leveled up a Mara for the main purpose of getting the Warlord's Mark skill gem, based on this guy's video:
Apparently crit flasks are obsolete now though so I might have to rethink the direction of my build and Iron Reflexes might work well.

Oh wow, Vaal Pact is a relatively new Keystone, I didn't even know it existed but its really strong. Yes, diamond flasks are gone which will significantly reduce your top end damage. In general Armor is much better than Evasion, the binary nature of evasion is awful, if you fail your dice roll you take full damage, if you don't you evade full damage - with armor it mitigates damage taken, all damage, including elemental damage (mostly physical but to a lesser extent elemental also.)Can't really comment on the build, I'm still struggling myself to take CI or not, the nerf to it makes it seem almost unusable, I'm already have survivability issues without it.

It is a tool to see how all of the various items, skills etc stack up together. The notes above are just a step by step guide on how to use the tool since it does not come with a lot of explanation.https://code.google.com/p/path-of-exile-skilltree-planer/

Ok thanks I got all excited when I saw that I had 100 skills to use.

Finally get to play today, 100 pages and an hour of video and then a thousand word paper on recursion...All I wanna do is click bad guys until they give me loot.

I'm a Diablo addict from way back and downloaded this last night after seeing this thread. Looks like what I was hoping Diablo3 was going to be instead of the dumbed down thing that D3 is.its hard to dumb down Diablo btw. This looks like a lot of fun. When they get their server issues sorted I will be on it, like a bonnet.

My laptop keeps "freezing and locking up." I have to unplug it and remove the battery to restart it. Happens about 2 times a day.

studying programming?
Yeah, 2nd to last semester and this is the most alien concept I've had to learn.

Could be a memory leak or temperature control problem, I've had both on my desktop so I'm sure its a nightmare on laptops.

Any tips? Maybe I should move to desktop?

It's essentially elegant programming, I do not know anyone that regularly programs with it since it can be difficult to understand and debug and since most companies have multiple programmers maintaining code you do not want to get too "cute" in your elegant programming. The only useful purpose for it was when I was still in school and some kid bragged about how he answered a question in an interview for Anderson Consulting (a big firm to get a job from back then) with 1 line of code using recursion. He ended up getting the job.

Very very busy right now on the site. These guys are going to make a fortune. over 15K people waiting to play! WOW
You have to think programmers at all the big game companies are drooling. Big companies might be in trouble here.
Activision and EA having a firesale of their developers. Blizzard, Sony and Microsoft hemorrhaging money, id say they are already in trouble.

Yeah, first day of class my instructor says, "In my 10 years I've used recursion legitimately twice, but for your coursework it will be fundamental" :wall: I'm no savant, but debugging recursive algorithms makes me wanna curl into a ball.

Looks like a new patch is out but I am unsure how to get the patch. Do I just use the "Download Now" icon or is the for the full game download only?http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/76950

The client is self updating, just restart the client and it will update.Got to the end of cruel difficulty and hit a wall on my witch, the CI nerf kills witch survivability.Been working on my Templar and I'm enjoying the faceroll, just walk around and occasionally right click and everything dies.

Damn I was just leveling a witch. It does seem melee has it easy. The mara was so easy to play. Might go back to Shadow-bow and try iron reflexes.

fyi on the passive tree:"Increased" and "Reduced" is additive/subtractive and combine together in their own step. Then each "More" and "Less" are multiplied after.

Switching characters sucks with this queue. You have to logout to switch characters, right?
As far as I can tell. Had a queue of 800 earlier and it went away in about 45 seconds. 15K... not so much.
Yes you have to log out to switch characters unfortunately. Yesterday during peak hours I wanted to start my templar so I had to clear out one of my mules that was reserving my name and then delete him, the act of logging in twice with a 5k person queue took like 15 minutes. Not great, not horrible, should get better with the hardware upgrades.

Struggling a bit with my Templar with a Wand. I can't seem to find a Wand node that is close enough to make the wand worthwhile in the early going.I may bag this character and try again with a ranger using a bow and sword as there are nodes close enough to make that work relatively early in the game.

is this game going to be free to play / download?
I believe the game will be free even after the "official" launch. You can pay money to improve your character, but most of the improvements are aesthetics and definitely are not required to succeed.

here is the official text from the FAQ6. What does Path of Exile cost to play?Path of Exile is 100% free to play, for everyone, forever. Our website will allow the purchase of many in-game perks and aesthetic upgrades, but all of these are completely optional, and players can have a complete, fulfilling gaming experience without spending a penny.7. I still don't understand how it's free to play - what's the catch? There is no catch at all, once you download the client you are free to play for as long as you like, with no charge. The purchasable perks do not convey any gameplay benefit, but help you create a unique look for your character and its fighting style.

Ok I cannot seem to figure out how to use the ORB's. Augmentation, Alteration, or the Exalted ORB. I keep getting, "failed to apply make sure it is the right type" error. I have tried them on everything I own. I have even taken them from the active menu removed the orbs if they had one and still no luck?

Alright, orbs can modify items they essentially create our crafting system.Alteration orbs take a magic(blue) item and reroll its modifiers, so if a helmet had +life and +armor you could use an alteration and it will reroll the +armor and +life to something else.

Augmentation orbs add an additional modifier to magic(blue) items. Magic items however can only have two modifiers, so it will not work if used on a magic item that already has two modifiers. So if you had a helmet with +life and nothing else you could use an augmentation but if it had +life and +armor you could not.

Exalted orbs do the same thing, but for rare(yellow) items. Yellow items can have 6 modifiers, so if a rare already has 6 mods you cannot exalt it, but if it has 3, 4 or 5 you can. That being said, do not use exalted orbs, they are one of the highest currencies and are worth a substantial amount.

when using an alteration orb, can your item actually get worse stats than it already had?For the exalted orbs caution, does this mean that you are almost always likely to buy something that is better than what you already carry

I don't have any Exalted yet, this is what I got, how do you rank them and are there any you use on a regular basis while levelling?1x Regal

1x Blessed

2x Chaos

2x Regret

6x Fusing

9x Chance

9x Jeweller's

12x Alchemy

18x Augmentation

19x Whetstone

26x Chromatic

38x Alteration

48x Transmutation

48x Armourer's Scrap

when using an alteration orb, can your item actually get worse stats than it already had?
Yes, its entirely random.
For the exalted orbs caution, does this mean that you are almost always likely to buy something that is better than what you already carry
No, but typically exalted orbs are reserved for items that you find that are near perfect (typically end game gear) that is missing a mod. Because of their inherit rarity and their purpose they are incredibly valuable. For comparison, a Chaos orb is worth ~1.5-2 Alchemy, a Gemcutter's Prism is worth ~2.5-3.5 Chaos and an Exalted is worth ~5-7 Gemcutter's Prisms.

Double post for two separate questions:

I don't have any Exalted yet, this is what I got, how do you rank them
Lowest to highest:
Portal Scrolls-Transmutation OrbsChromatic OrbsAlteration Orbs-Jeweler OrbsOrbs of ChanceBlessed Orbs (despite their rarity are actually quite crap)-Cartographers Chisel-Orbs of FusingAlchemy OrbsScouring Orbs-Orbs of Regret-Chaos Orbs-Regal Orbs-Gemcutters Prism-Divine Orb-Exalted OrbThere is an online tool for quick orb value referencing, but forewarned it can manipulate the market, not all orbs are worth what the tool suggests.
are there any you use on a regular basis while levelling?
If I outlevel my gear and its impacting my survivability I will find a decent level appropriate white item for that slot that has the sockets I need, I will increase its quality to +20% and then pray I don't get a bad roll off a transmutation - if I get only one mod and its a mod I want ill use an augmentation, if I get a bad mod or two I will burn a few alterations on it before cutting my losses. I probably upgrade like this every 10 or so levels as I level up.I never use fusing orbs on anything below end game gear, and I rarely use jewelers or chromatics unless its a really good item.

An exception to the above is anytime I find a perfect Onyx Amulet (20 all attributes) or perfect prismatic ring (12% all resistance) I use almost all of my chance orbs rolling for really nice jewelry.

Its important to note that quality improving orbs (not counting GCPs) increase a certain percentage of quality depending on the item rarity. On white items they will increase it 5% which means it will only take you 4 scrap or whetstones to max out the item quality, but if its magic it only increases by 2% and if its rare or unique it only increases 1%.

Trying to figure out why Orbs of Scouring are so valuable on that list. Doesn't an Orb of Alteration act similarly?

Say you get a nice white item with a lot of sockets, maybe even linked (some of the most expensive items in the game are just white items that have 6 linked sockets). So you try your hand at making a great piece of gear and you start by increasing its quality to 20%, maybe use a few chromatics trying to get the right socket colors. Then you use an alchemy orb on it to make it rare, it could be exactly what you want - or it could give you four crap mods you don't need. Now you're options are to use chaos orbs (which are 2.5-3.5 more than an alchemy) to reroll the rare mods on it. OR, use an orb of scouring and then use another alchemy orb.Orbs of scouring only remove the item rarity, it maintains the sockets, links and quality. Its cheaper, and scourings/alchemys are more common.

I am having some problems with basic pack management early in the game with a new character. I went out on one of my first missions (to recover the medicine chest on the island) and my pack filled up very quickly with only 5 or so items. Will I be able to get a larger pack size as the game moves on or is the game built around quick pack fill ups and then back to town to sell?
