Sorry for the new Patriots thread but I am curious as to how the shark pool feels about this.

The Patriots have been punished to a degree seen fit by the commish. They will no longer have the "benefit" of on-field videography. The playing field has presumably been leveled.

That said... what happens if the Patriots still manage to beat up on the NFL and win another Super Bowl. How will you feel about the victory?

:lmao:

My money is whichever poll option paints the Patriots in the worst light will be voted on the most (option 3).

I expect this disdain will go on by some for eternity. Just like I hear it done about the Steelers, the Cowboys, the 49ers, and the Packers.

Yes but this isn't a "Do you like the patriots" poll.

This is asking if you would consider the SB win legitimate now that they clearly will no longer have the benefit of on-field videography.

I am by no means a Patriots fan, but anyone who thinks the video stuff has anything to do with their Super Bowl wins, past or future, needs to pull their head out of the sand.

I disagree. The line between good and great is so thin in the NFL that even a little advantage can be the difference between winning and losing.

No matter what happens, Patriot fans will continue feel their team is being treated unfairly simply because their vaunted "dynasty" is in question after being caught cheating. remember boys, it's only a witch hunt if it isn't true. And I got 500K that says it was.

Enjoy martyrdom!!

I would congratulate them on a job well done like I did everytime they won when I thought they were doing it by the book.

 The Patriots have somehow turned into the Yankeesof the NFL.You either love them :lmao: or hate them, :lmao: there is no in between.

Considering all their SB wins came down to a FG, it's very reasonable to believe that an advantage gained for even just one series in the games could have been the difference.

How can you say this? Why did they do it if it didn't make a difference? Do you honestly not understand how a QB knowing what the defense is would be an advantage?

Here's the thing: If this was going on through the whole Super Bowl run, you'd have to believe the players knew about it, especially the leaders on the team. If that's the case, why didn't a guy like Lawyer Milloy, who felt betrayed by Belichick and the Patriots, and had every reason to blow this thing up say nothing? Or what about Ty Law? Or any number of players who left the team to eventually play against the Pats? Deion Branch? Joe Andruzzi?

Either:

(a) Most of the players didn't know about it.

(b) The players knew about it but once they went to other teams, they realized how widespread it is or that it wasn't that big of a deal.

or

© Its a relatively recent development.

Pretty much all three possibilities tends to reduce the "taint" on past Super Bowl titles.

I belive they deserve to be treated with the same respect as any other violator who has paid their debt to society. They are every bit as rehabilitated as Jamal Lewis, Chris Henry, Pacman Jones, and even Michael Vick (after he serves his time, of course). Therefore, I would obviously congratulate them as heartily as they congratulated the Steelers after their last Super Bowl win.

Again, I posted this on another thread on 610WIP in Philadelphia reported that:Monte Kiffen, then of Tampa Bay said that in a game against NE in 2000, Charlie Weis came over to him and said, "we had all your defensive signals and you still beat us."That leads me to believe that they were doing this since 2000. And to answer your question, people did know about it, possibly, the Patriots just got more blatant with their execution of the stealing of signals. But there was a letter sent to the teams last year warning them to stop this. So it wasn't like this weekend was the first time anyone said anything.

So, to me, the answer is (b) -- If this kind of thing was so top secretand exclusive to the Pats, why would Weis even offer that up to Kiffin in the first place? And don't tell me "arrogance" since it happened in 2000, when the Patriots and Belichick had absolutely NOTHING to be arrogant about.

I think we, as fans, have no idea how to quantify the advantage this gave to the Patriots. But the fact that the Commissioner took away a 1st round pick indicates to me that what the Patriots did was pretty serious. It's certainly not out of the question to think that these actions had some impact on their 3 Super Bowl victories. Especially when you consider the number of close games they've won in their 3 Super Bowl runs.

What about the rumors of surveillance equipment in the opposing teams locker room?
Again, there's no doubt this type of behavior has been going on for awhile. "The Hammer" is finally doing something about it. I'm not pointing any fingers at the Patriots because they're not the only ones doing it and those that act like they are are just naive.I will say this.......Bellichick trying to cheat the way he normally did against his former assistant wasn't the brightest thing he ever did.

I am not building this into anything more significant than it is, which judgi by the huge penalties given, is pretty significant.

I don't hate the Pats, in fact the AFCW is the furthest away from me and pretty much insignificant to me, but I really call their success into question right now. Every win for any team can be boiled down to 3-5 plays that made the difference in the game. It's pretty clear that the Pats were employing techniques not allowed by the rules to gain an advantage and if they can use that to make one or two of those difference making plays then it's copletely justifiable to call their success into question.

I just find it amusing that certain Pats fans have their heads in the sand about the situation, try to down play it, try to bring other teams into it, try to sweep it under the rug because the commish made his ruling etc... Making a poll like this is pretty much a showcase for blind homerism as evidenced by Alias' post.

Asterisk Bowl Rings for Everyone!!!

I voted that I would give them the respect that goes along with winning the Super Bowl. There's no reason not to. As for the other three...well that's a different story. I'll treat them the same way I treat Bonds' record. With admiration of what they were able to accomplish, but there's always going to be that little part of me that is mired in suspicion.

I would love to see these boards if SD goes into Foxboro on sunday and absolutely hands the Pats their asses, sacking Brady like 14 times. People's heads would explode. I think it'll be a close game though.

Tough call. I think we can assume the following:

1) Belichick isn't throwing away his existing tapes (probably for every team in the AFC and many in the NFC)

2) Teams playing the Pats will change their defensive signals

I am leaning toward thinking that 2 overrides 1 and the cheating won't help them much this year. But still, this season is tainted, so I'd like to see what they do in 2008 and beyond.

Are you really this dense? How is this season tainted after 1 game? The cameraman got caught 4 mins into the game... they had ZERO benefit from the tape in last weeks game. You honestly don't think teams won't change their signals? :lmao: What POSSIBLE advantage could footage of hand signals from previous seasons give the Pats this year? Absolutely amazing how far people will go to throw common sense out the window in favor of lunacy like this.... wow.

To be perfectly honest... the "hidden" (though several folks caught it and PMed me) motive for creating this poll was to fish out the lunatics.

Anyone voting the 3rd option is clearly just doing so out of spite/hatred for the patriots and has an opinion worth less than zero in the minds of any rational NFL fan. Partcularly since I dangled the carrot of #2 out there giving fans who hate the pats but are at least rational and objective an out.

Anyone writing off the 2008 season (which is apparenlty 23% of you so far) because of 4 mins of footage that the coaches never saw might as well not even watch the games as they're a little too emotionally invested in this league to be healthy. :lmao:

:lmao: I think that although I will always regard their Super Bowl teams as very good, the dynasty label and comparing them to the other great dynasties in football is now moot. New England will always be questioned in the end because they used technology outside the parameters of the game itself. I still wonder how they beat the Rams in 2001 when they should have got smashed and whether it's right or wrong, I now have doubts on whether that win in particular was legitimate. Then you go back to regular season games, 1st round playoff games, etc...??? Yeah, that's alot to consider. In the NFL the difference between franchises, personnel, and coaching is often negligible. A few key plays, one big performance, or one big stop is the difference between a championship and nothing. How many key plays over the past years were decided because the Patriots were cheating? Very tough to know but it should create a lot of doubt for the league, for other coaches, and to fans. I think what the Patriots have done is absolutely soil their reputation here and they are not going to be able to fix it.

I find it amusing that non-patriots fans assume no other team in the league is doing this and that patriots fans must be homers for assuming the opposite. The Patriots got caught and got punished for video surveillance of first game of the 2007 season. Extrapolating that to every game ever played under Belichick is ludicrous, it is like saying if someone was caught speeding on the expressway that they must have been speeding every day since they got their license. Furthermore I would expect there to be a lot more stringent security measures taken in playoff games. Regardless we cannot know either way which teams did this and how much of an advantage it gave them if any so speculation is running rampant.

I find it amusing that any Pats fan would have the balls to suggest they are above board because they "think" other teams are doing this. The Jets aren't, and their coach knew the Pats were. We don't know how long this has been going on but it has been at least three years and probably longer. Pats fans> :lmao:

Patriots fans need to realize there’s no way to uncrap this bed.

Sure, you can change the sheets and launder the dirty ones, but the odor is going to linger for awhile.

Again, I am not a Pats fan by any means (I rooted against them in all three Super Bowls, and I giggled like a schoolgirl when the Colts beat them in the playoffs last year), but it's crazy to see how people who hate the Patriots (especially fans of AFC teams like the Jets and Steelers) are using this situation as an outlet for their hate. "The Patriots beat my team, so they HAD to be cheating! CHEATERS!!!" They broke league rules, they were punished, and they were punished fairly.

So in response to your own words, what is the point of taping teams at all if not for immediate use in that particular game? Which leads us all to the fact that since they've been doing it for at least 2 years, and according to you it's no use in the future, that they HAVE used it for competitive advantage within the games that they were taping.

:lmao: ICON - Seriously now, what your clever detective work fails to acknowledge is the % of the Shark Pool and these boards that are pure shtick, and what makes it hilarious is that you yourself are one of the biggest Shtick guys here...You're one of the 1st guys to go running to the Yankees thread with any little bit of information you can dance your pickle to YET, here your are acting as if you're going to get results than mean anything.....You're obsessed with the Yankee thread, you admit to keeping an eye on other Yankee threads on the Net like YESNET, you use a GAYJETER Avatar for years, You are full of Yankee venom and you can't grasp what most of this is about... If this were the Colts, the Shark Pool would have gone down this week Exactly as it did - Certain lunatic Colt Fans would run to defend their team with 'Everyone does it" and diversion technniques while everyone else would mock them, and some Colt fans would "Get it"..... The difference would have been that Patriot Nation would have been leading the way with the one liners and cracks about how the Colts are tarnished and have lost repect. You, Fred, Workhouse, Alias and Finless would have been Hilarious.Maybe next time.
Oh make no mistake, if this had been the Colts instead of the Pats, I'd have been merciless. :excited:
:lmao:

Sorry for the new Patriots thread but I am curious as to how the shark pool feels about this. The Patriots have been punished to a degree seen fit by the commish. They will no longer have the "benefit" of on-field videography. The playing field has presumably been leveled. That said... what happens if the Patriots still manage to beat up on the NFL and win another Super Bowl. How will you feel about the victory?
Jealous, as usual.

My money is whichever poll option paints the Patriots in the worst light will be voted on the most (option 3).
 The Patriots have somehow turned into the Yankeesof the NFL.You either love them :lmao: or hate them, :excited: there is no in between.

I don't care about the Patriots although I respect what they've done the past 10 years. However, I certainly care about this topic. In all honosty, this team could have been anyone or at least could have been a lot more than just the Patriots. If it weren't for the Jets coach who snitched, it wouldn't have been found out.

Just being honest.Me, upon learning that Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield were admitted steroid users: :lmao: Me, upon learning that Rodney Harrison got caught with HGH: :lmao: :lmao:

If the Pats win this year, the "America's Game" that would be shown on NFL Network on September of 2008 will be among the 2 or 3 most interesting out of the 42 that NFL films made (comparable to the 1968 Jets and the 1970 Colts). Beyond that - I don't know the answer.

I think this incident hurts the NFL in general this year - and it won't truly recover until at least next season. It would have been "better" for the NFL if the team was caught was a middle-of-the-road team rather that the team favored to win in all by the oddsmakers. Now - if the Pats win it all it will be awkward for the NFL, and if the Pats don't win it all but look like the best team throughout the season it will be awkward for the NFL because every close call in the playoffs will be doubly scrutinized (will the refs screw the Pats in the playoffs because the NFL doesn't want them in the Super Bowl this season?).

There are plenty of Colts fans on various forums (not FBGs that I saw, but elsewhere) that are gleeful about what happened - but I'm not. I see this as bad for the league, at least for this season, that this happened. Hopefully in the long run this doesn't happen again, but this season will have questions almost no matter what happens.
