Peppers to the Patriots for a 2nd round pick? (1 Viewer)

I really dont think too many Cat fans would be disappointed if they traded for Cutler. Who says he has to start, bring him in and have a competition for the job.
You really think Jay Cutler would be ok with being a backup? I don't. I also don't think Cutler has done anything great enough as a QB thus far to compensate for his immature behavior and baggage. I would be disappointed if the Panthers traded for Cutler.

Ridiculous. Cutler is likely going to cost at least a 1st round pick. He's not going to want to sit, and you don't give up a 1st round pick for a Pro Bowl QB and then sit him on the bench. If you're trading for Cutler, you're starting him. Period.

If the Panthers were ever to acquire Cutler, you can bet Delhomme would be shipped to NYJ or TB quickly.

I don't see Peppers getting traded. At least not for Cutler or just a 2nd round pick from New England.

The Cutler trade is just a ridiculous idea from the Panthers perspective. It would tie up too much cap money at the QB position for one and leave the Panthers with yet another hole to fill at DE. They already have needs at DT and don't have a 1st round pick to address the DL if they trade straight up for Cutler. They also wouldn't have the cap space available to address their needs in free agency.

The NE trade rumor is just as ridiculous. The Panthers have made it known that they want Peppers here this year. They have not hinted at all that they are interested in working out a trade with another team. Not to mention the Pats don't have the cap space available to even sign Peppers anyway. You really think he's going to sign for less than what he would make playing under the tag this season?

Also, keep in mind the possibility of an uncapped year in 2010. Peppers can play this year for 17 million then get a HUGE payday with a 20 million+ bonus next year. Why would he sign this year and be stuck playing under a contract with an uncapped season coming up?

My guess is he will play under the tag this year and see if the Panthers tag him again next year.

I agree with all of it.

I agree with the way you are thinking, but trust me if you are in a championship run like the Panthers are poising themselves to be, you do not want a disgruntled employee as a pillar on your team. Remember Joey Galloway & Seattle. At this point, Fox is facing the serious chance to nt be abe to sign anyone and have Peppers sit out 10 games and involuntarily participate in the remaining 6.I am not expecting Panthers to risk such measures. Peppers risks losing a real good pay (10/16 of the franchise tag), but do remember that he will not get any mileage if he chooses this path and his position is one that players even in late 30s have continued to have successful and very profitable years.

There's no way Peppers will sit out any games and forgo over a million dollars per game by holding out. If he's not happy, he will phone it in and not try very hard, but he won't refuse to participate and cost himself money.

I seriously doubt Peppers would sit out any games. He has never said anything negative about the Panthers, and that includes the players, coaches, and owner. He has stated why he wants to play somewhere else. The guy has always been shy, quiet, private, and never a problem. I just don't see him sitting out because he might end up playing for the Panthers again. You know the Panthers offered him a huge contract before this past season started, and that was when he was coming off the worse season of his career. The Panthers have been good to him, and he knows this.

you also would have called the cassel deal ridiculous before it happened.what is carolina's alternative to taking the second -- remain right at the cap and let him walk next year?

or do you really think they would tag him again for 20m so he can dog it all year?

he's supposedly got a short list of teams he wants to play for, and nobody else is going to pay 17m for him for just one year.

if he wanted money to play in carolina he would've already taken that fat deal they offered him, so what makes you think he wants their 17m?

you have no idea how this new cba will shake out, or whether there'll be a work stoppage in 2011, and if he was to get a long term deal from a team he wants to go to w/some decent guaranteed money, it might not be a bad idea to take it.

you have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

just because 2010 is uncapped doesn't mean more than a few teams will put themselves over the 130m mark, and doesn't mean teams will want to sign some mega long term deal w/an uncertain cba or stoppage in the near future.

Consistent with his comments Saturday and true to his word, Peppers is not viewing this as a financial move but a career move –- to a place he wants to be, to a defense that appeals to him, to an organization he wants to be around.

the main hurdle on all this is what kind of cap space the pats can come up with, and while they're a little tight right now, it would be merely difficult, but not impossible to create the room they need.

if these guys thought the one year franchise tag salaries were so great to play for, why are they always so resistant to being tagged?

I think I did not come off right. Let me try it one more time. Carolina has no cap room to sign free agents at this point in time. So for what it is worth, until they sign Peppers, they need the same team and the new rookies to do better. The top three of these rookies will be selected at 59, 93 & 128. Perhaps I am wrong, but I believe John Fox has his team to win now. These rookies are hardly an answer. I think they already are a good team, the mold is there and their successful picks from last year will have a year under their belt - will it be enough? If so, no problem. Do not care to read more. I personally think not. That is just me. I do not think Peppers will miss a game either (if my math is right each game currently costs him $8991000/16 = $561937). I feel very much the same. Nevertheless, nobody can deny the chance he will not. The possibility exists. Denying is he will miss a game is rational, but not completely correct. Now, I am putting myself in JF's shoes. I do the rational thing and for some reason (whatever it is) it is not working. Do I have a risk? The Joey Galloway example is an outragous example, so would the Walter Jones example (2 games) and Barry Sanders example be (forever). They maybe just exist like pages from an old & dusted history book; but that book is certainly on the shelves of the NFL library.

Sounds like Peppers might be content playing for the Panthers this year after all.

Carl Carey, who represents Peppers, indicated last night he had not yet been contacted by Patriots coach Bill Belichick, or any other member of the organization. He claimed several other teams have asked him to gauge Peppers’ interest.

“While Julius is interested in the Patriots and a few other teams in the league, he is comfortable with the position he’s in right now,” Carey said. “In the event we are unable to reach an agreement (with another team), Julius will be among the highest paid defensive players next season, and we will be comfortable with that. We’re not in a position where we have to act hastily.”

update:

after reading adam's most excellent blog

http://adamjt13.blogspot.com/

this peppers thing looks even easier.

there's no way they can absorb that franchise cap hit, but if he just signs that tender, and they can work it out w/carolina, he's a pat.

haven´t seen any update on this in a few days and hoping it´s dead.

as a jets fan, I don´t want to see peppers on the pats.

I believe the original rumor reported the deal would be done some time between now and the draft --- so, not dead yet.....also, beli was on his radio spot saying these things can be fairly complicated and time consuming and the first thing peppers needs to do is sign his tender, so the pats can officially get involved in negotiations w/carolina.ok, I read between the lines a little bit on that one.

No, you didn't read too much between the lines there... I read the transcript from that radio spot, and he pretty much did everything but say, "Hey Julius, just sign the tender so we can openly negotiate with Carolina."
