Perspective: Provided By Neil deGrasse Tyson (1 Viewer)

In the pursuit of knowledge there's always supposed to be room for debate. But these days a lot of people seem more interested in talking about a supposed consensus and placing "deniers" in prison. That's not science. It's orthodoxy. Such are the times we live in.
Absolutely. I'm not buying in to this whole "gravity" orthodoxy. I don't believe in gravity, we need to start teaching the controversy there. I can't believe people just accept it, we need a healthy debate on this.
I want to hear more about putting evolution skeptics in prison. Will they share a cell with black ice skeptics?
Again, I wasn't talking about evolution. I guess I shouldn't expect you guys to have a germane awareness of current events outside the standard anti-religion talking points.

Scientists Ask Obama to Prosecute Global Warming Skeptics

Arrest Climate Change Deniers

Climate Deniers Should Be in Prison

RFK Jr. Wants Law to Punish Global Warming Skeptics

There are plenty of additional examples of such rhetoric both domestically and abroad.

I have voiced my opinion and have nothing else to add. I have given you credible statistics from the FBI and Census Bureau. I fine this Tyson guy to be annoying, that's all.

Statistics are impressive but you have to be wise how you use them. We still have aces in our sleeves to combat propaganda. Have a great day folks.

You have to be wonderful to get enough money for your new jet. Otherwise you end up flying first class with the common folk.

Estimates vary and Tyson's is on the high end but 2015 is expected to see approximately 33,000 total gun deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is nearly 3,200 every five weeks (comparable to the nearly 3,400 Americans who have died in terrorist attacks since 2001).
About 2/3 of these are suicides. White males account for the most gun deaths in America, largely because about half of all gun deaths are white males shooting themselves.
Have something to support this? A link perhaps?
In 2012, the latest year for which data is available, 64 percent of deaths from gun violence were suicides, compared with 57 percent in 2006. This increase can be largely attributed to white males, whose suicide rate far surpasses black and Hispanic males of every age. Among white men ages 35 to 64, the death rate by firearm increased over 29 percent since 1990 (after being corrected for population growth), and a staggering 89.2 percent of those deaths were self-inflicted.
Suicides among white males accounted for nearly half of the [total number of] deaths from firearm violence during 2012, and suicide among white men is increasing, Wintemute says. The increase offsets any decline we might have seen in overall firearm-related mortality during the 21st century.

This could be the greatest ownage in a internet thread EVER! Hilarious, especially with the mock and ignore response.

If you were any further off base, you'd be playing hockey.

3,400: Americans who died by Terrorism since 2001 3,400: Americans who died by household Firearms since five weeks ago.
Holy eff. Is the latter part true?
Yeah there's no way that's true.
33K firearm deaths in 2014 so I guess it could be close. Jesus.
Neil should tweet this:

"For every firearm death in the U.S. there are 15 deaths from tobacco."
What would that statistic be if you compared alcohol deaths? You do the math, 88,000 a year between 2006 and 2010. 1 in 10 deaths for working age people. Cost of excessive drinking in 2010 was 249 billion dollars or $2.05 a drink.

My wife revealed to me tonight over dinner that she has seriously been thinking about us owning a gun(she must want to kill me). My position has long been a gun supporter but not for me personally. Meaning I want freedom of choice. I was shocked to hear my liberal wife suddenly wanting to hit the range and explore what it would take to own both a shotgun and maybe a small hand gun or concealed weapons permit. I almost choked when I heard her say it.

I think TDG is an amazingly smart human being but I don't consider his political views to be far reaching and advanced. He is foolish if he thinks he can force humans to live in peace, never gonna happen.

How often do you have the urge to assault your wife?

He's a little weasel with an agenda. He can learn a thing or two from Bill Nye about keeping science fun and objective.
This is a joke right? I haven't made it through the first page of this thread, so not sure what is said after this point.

I routinely listen to Tyson's podcasts and he can come off snooty to religion or anyone that has any doubts about climate change. His best shows are the ones that he concentrates on the science. Often he'll have a celebrity as a guest and some of those can come close to getting political, or preachy.

It is because of his shows that I do not like Nye. Every time he comes on Tyson he comes off as swarmy to anyone that might have a different opinon than him.

I'm a huge fan of NDT but he's a dreamer. I do think it's possible for humans to one day live in peace but that is in the far distant future. For right now we need to focus on the root causes of violence and try to reduce it rather than hoping the human race is different than it is currently.

I saw a liveleak video yesterday of a guy with a machete vs a guy with a stick. I think it was in Brazil. Fortunately, stick guy just got a really bad cut to the wrist.

Can you imagine how many grusome liveleak videos there would be if they outlawed guns in America? Because people certainly wouldn't stop killing each other.

Well he threatened to smack me around, pretty much obliterating any board cred I might have established over the years. :topcat:
