He may very well be the nicest man on the planet in person. I don't like his celebrity persona or the Manning's family's tantrum during the Eli Manning draft. Eli was young and I don't hold him accountable for the BS during that draft. Your coming out of College having proved nothing, your father insists that there is no way you will play for San Diego. I don't like Manning as a QB because I think he is soft and too easily deflects blame onto his teammates without being direct about it. I perceive him as slightly devious and manipulative. I don't like seeing his little tantrums on the field followed by his finger pointing. Would I keep him as a Fantasy QB, damn right. Do I think he's a top QB in the NFL, damn right. Would I want him if I owned a NFL team, nope. There's more to it then being talented. There is high character and then their is high character, as long as Manning is winning he'll have it, lets see what happens when the team falters.
Should note I respect NFL players, but they are entertainment. I don't mind they make money - they entertain me. I never Idolize sports figures and they are not Hero's. So that may be why I cut across the grain of the average Sports Joe. My view of them is like TV Stars, shut up, look pretty(Play good football) and collect your pay check. Hey but thats just me. Sports is awesome but its a small, small slice of life. I'll take a humble EMT, Police Officer or Firefighter and of Course our folks in Uniform as Hero's, NFL players are very well paid entertainers - thats all.
Dang Mdog... I must respectfully disagree. It think it's about as far off base as you can get man. It sounds to me like just simply don't like him. Much like I don't like Brady. And I couldn't stand Aikmen back in his heyday either. I just hated them cuz they were/are so good! However, I do think Brady is full of BS.I wasn't too happy with how the Mannings handled Eli's draft either, but perhaps they were on to something. Seems to have really panned out for Eli though huh? Peyton is probably the most intelligent and competitive guy on that team. He expects the same from his team mates as he expects from himself. I'm sure he wouldn't be too thrilled to "lose". Who is? His character is immpecable, his worth ethic, his dedication, all of it.
I really think the bottom line is, if he's deflecting stuff onto his team mates, I'd say that usually he's right. He makes mistakes sure. And since i live in Indiana I get to watch them all the time. He has no problem admitting to a bad throw or whatever. But not to be an ### about it, I'd say that usually he IS right! The guy should go into coaching or even acting when he retires. He's always great in his commercials and on SNL, and his football brain is remarkable.
I guess the only thing that bothers me about Manning, is he kinda tightens his lips together when talking, in a "gosh dang it" kinda way. Drives me nuts. HA! But I think the world of him, and so does Indianapolis. He's a god around here. But so are many of the other players too. We all are just crazy about our team. Heck, I'd be willing to say that Jeff Saturday is as popular as Freeny around here!
I agree that real heroes are the guys that protect and serve our country and communities. It's just a game, and Manning is just a player. We make too much of it really and lose site of what's important. But our brains need that kind of break from reality I think, and athletes are just one of the ways that help forget about it all I guess.
One final note... Manning is VERY VERY good to his team mates. They all are very close, and this clip is something that is something that doesn't happen very often. Even Saturday laffed it off after the fact. It's the heat of battle kind of thing. These guys have been together a long time, and they are like blood to each other. Make no mistake... Manning is not disrespectful of his team mates EVER (aside from Vanderdouche).
