Peyton Manning’s image built on lies (1 Viewer)

Some people in this thread don't seem to know the definition of sexual assault:

Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape.

If you think his physical actions were just some locker room, frat boy antics of a legal adult subject to all laws (let alone what they did to her after the sexual assault ) , then I hope you don't have a daughter, sister, gf, or wife that ever has to go through this. Women are not the sole arbiter of sexual assault, the law is. This is the 21st century, people should treat others with respect and compassion especially in the workplace.

More will come out this week, and it will damage his legacy.
Which of those did he do?

Still boils down do a bunch of Pat fans who had their feelings hurt the last year. What he's being accused of is typical young adult college crap. He didn't rub his butt in her face but he probably did moon her. Nothing to get all bent out of shape over, but Pats fans will do this because 2015 didn't go like they wanted it to so they go after their long time nemesis.
Whatever dude. This isn't some football-centric crap about ball deflation or HGH; he sexually assaulted a woman and then assassinated her character.

I think Manning liked her. I don't know who here has seen a photo of the girl (Naughright), but she was hot. There was some prior incident the lawyers covered up that obviously wasn't bad enough to keep her from working with him.

Some hot chick he wants is working on his foot, he takes a chance (a stupid chance, but whatever, he's 19 and he's overindulged), it blows up massively, and as a humiliated, spoiled athlete with no social skills he has no recourse but to be a hostile ##### to her even after she's long out of his life.

(Seriously, why tf bring it up in the autobiography? You're free and clear, just keep your mouth shut! There could be other reasons, but you can't help but think the humiliation still stuck in his craw at that point).

You see normal guys get nasty all the time when a chick rejects them... times that by ten. That's what this was.

Same with Roethlisberger. Another guy who's so used to getting ##### he A) doesn't have any game whatsoever (in fact, probably lacks the basic social skills those of us who aren't treated like Gods have in spades); and B) can't handle rejection... so he goes ahead and just forces himself on to her like a total creep.

When's football back?

Maybe this was addressed earlier in the thread. I read the first 15 or so posts early on, so please excuse the (Honda) if it's such.

Why was he naked when she was addressing his stress fracture in his foot? If he wasn't initially, how'd he get that way while his foot was being examined? Just wondering. Sounds fishy.

Regarding haters, everybody has 'em. Me, you, everybody. Same with admirers. Problem with fame is that it multiplies both camps.
According to testimony by Rollo & Saxson it appears he pulled his pants\shorts down. "Peyton, you messed up. I still don't know why you dropped your drawers."
And she didn't know he was doing it??? Where did the pants go? I dunno. Not doubting something happened, just can't paint the picture.

I remember when the rumors about Manning's sexuality came out. Suddenly, all these poor homophobic Colts fans had to come out and expose Manning banging half the chicks in Indianapolis behind his wife's back because hey... at least it proves he's not gay! I bet JohnnyU was one of them.

Many posters here feel that Peyton is a scumbag who should be in prison, and that this is bigger than football team loyalties.

It's just a coincidence that those posters are all Pats' fans.

Patriots are to football what the Clintons are to politics. No matter how successful they've been, one can't ignore all the scandal and cheating on their watch (which was all probably totally unnecessary, but further accentuates how neurotic they were).

Likewise, the fans of the Clintons and Patriots fans are among the most obnoxious, humorless, persecutory human beings I know. They spend an inordinate amount of time highlighting the flaws of everyone else in an attempt to explain away and/or minimize the failings of those they support. I suspect that's pretty much what's been going on here.

Can't believe people are arguing what he allegedly did was not sexual assault. I've witnessed firsthand someone do something way less vile that led to them being arrested for sexual assault.

Feel free to question why this is brought up after all these years, question if Peyton is a changed man or not. Go ahead. But there is no question that if he did what he was accused he 100% sexually assaulted her and he damn sure violated her.

You should read the article. There's some pretty damning stuff in there.

I've liked Peyton pretty much his whole career. I've gotten a laugh out of a lot of his ads. It's been really something how he's willed himself through these last two seasons. I am not a hater. His first two years in Denver it was beautiful to watch that offense.

I've got nothing against the guy. But read the article.

The genitals in the face incident was not the first. There was an earlier incident of a sexual nature between Manning and Naughright that we don't know anything about because it's been redacted. But because of that there was hostility between the two at the time of the second incident. It wasn't a playful act.

That says more about you than I probably needed to know. Most people I know wouldn't do anything close to what Peyton did in this situation. The fact that you can casually dismiss someone who would do something like this to a woman is the reason why #######s get away with this ####.
Thank you. He put his a**hole on her face. HE PUT HIS A**HOLE ON HER FACE! Just thought I'd repeat that in case it was hard to understand.
Imagine being this woman, trying to do your job, and the "leader" of the team not only does this to you (after an incident two years earlier that the Manning family successfully was able to cover up, by the way, which I hadn't heard before yesterday's article) but continues to taunt you in your workplace by reenacting the harassment with teammates in your presence. Imagine making up to go to work every day wondering what additional embarrassment and humiliation is waiting for you by the person who robbed you of your dignity.

Those of you who simply laugh this off are part of the problem. Period. I hope none of you ever have daughters.
Her nickname was "C**t Bumper" amongst her peers and the student athletes. It sounds like there was a pretty misogynistic culture there at the time. Not that that absolves Manning, but he most certainly was not the only one involved.

Personally, I don't know if what he did counts as "sexual assault" or not. It was an ### thing to do, pun intended, but I don't know that it was assault. Sexual harassment, no argument, but probably not assault.

And we should remember Jamie Naughright was and is a really accomplished woman. And the Mannings tried to defame her in their book and she sued. Listen to what the judge said when he denied the Mannings' motion to dismiss the case:

"Even if the plaintiff is a public figure, the evidence of record contains sufficient evidence to satisfy the court that a genuine issue of material fact exists that would allow a jury to find, by clear and convincing evidence, the existence of actual malice of the part of the defendants."

"Specifically, there is evidence of record, substantial enough to suggest that the defendants knew that the passages in question were false, or acted in reckless disregard of their falsity. There is evidence of record to suggest that there were obvious reasons to doubt the veracity of Peyton Manning's account of the incident in question. The court further finds that there is sufficient evidence to permit the conclusion that the defendants entertained serious doubts as to the truth of the passages in this case."

true. But if it was done by an 18 year old kid, it would be a humorous tale at your workplace for years.
I own my place of business, and if an 18 year old kid did that to my daughter/ employee, then the cops would follow the ambulance to my work, and he would not throw a football for the next 8 weeks while his arm healed. It amazes me that you make the most ignorant statements, when this was someone's daughter he did it to. Maybe you don't have daughters since you seem to be doing this kind of crap at band camp a lot? Or if your older than 12, and indeed an adult- thank God you've not procreated; lest you feel the humility and anger of someone "bullying" your daughter with his a$$hole and junk on her face.

Looking forward to the breaking news 5 years from now of Big Ben getting rapey with a DTF girl in a bathroom while someone blocked off the pathway from c-blockers.

the old 'if it were my daughter' defense. Well that certainly makes it seem worse. How about 'if he were my son'? I'd slap him silly for being such an a**hole, but don't I'd be considering him a sexual criminal. The kid was obviously a doosh. But hardly a rapist.

I mean it's obviously not on par with what most people know as sexual assault. I'd call it somewhere between harassment and assault.

It's really a pretty weird thing to do. It sounds like he had history with this woman - will be interesting to hear what that was.

You're right.. like with most things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Based on what was the norm for this behaviour in 1996, this was not sexual assault, but this is also definitely not something to just defend over and over. People by nature don't like something they can't argue strongly about, so I get it... but it's good that this is resurfacing and being talked about

What Manning did clearly was heinous and indefensible. However, the bigger injustice was the treatment of this case by U of Tennessee. I think it's pretty clear that, as the star QB, and coming from a wealthy family, Manning received preferential treatment at the expense of the victim. That's not how things are supposed to work, but is anyone shocked?

I've mentioned soeveral times in this thread that it was a different world in the ealry 90's than it is today, and its tough to apply our current world view to actions from that time. The Title XI stuff I mentioned above brought back some memories for me. Title IX was about gender equity in college athletics. As a male college athlete, that meant to us that we were losing our share of the pie. I was a div III collegiate wrestler between 1993 and 1998 - I saw a number of wrestling programs die because of IX, and I saw female teams being promoted at our expense. My head coach couldn't get hired by the school full-time, he had to sell cars on the side to make a living. Meanwhile, the women's crew team's head coach was offered a staff position (the crew team was founded in 1995, the wrestling team had been around since at least the '40s).

Point is, the early '90s were a time when women were just starting to barge into a male-dominated world, and the men in charge didn't like that one bit. I'd imagine that's why the university treated this woman that way.

Good God they've managed to make the nested quote feature even worse!!!

Also, I agree very much that these institutions have to stop fostering this behavior.

Again the real problem here isn't speaking out against Manning if he did what was alleged, the problem is that all of the "facts" in this matter are presented from a necessarily biased document prepared by the lawyers representing the alleged victim.  I would probably be on board of the "I hate Manning" train if we had something more than just that document, based entirely on her word and prepared by people who stand to gain financially by proving her case, to go on.

In our society we are so damn fast to pass judgment based on so little information, or so much information from exclusively one side of the argument, that it makes me more concerned for our entire judicial system than I thought it was possible for me to be.  And I was really concerned to begin with.  It's sad.

And I hate the new board...almost as much as I will hate the next new board.
Actually scientific research will test that the nested quote issue seems to be just from quotes brought from the old board.

I will begin the experiment now....  IGOR!  THROW THE SWITCH!!

Super interesting that Manning couldn't wait to get in front of a camera after the Al Jazeera thing, but is sure quiet now.

Especially because he clearly has nothing to be ashamed of, as he outlined in his 2001 book, when he violated the gag order, and smeared that woman's name, which resulted in another suit, which he settled again.

He and his father are despicable.  Really hope he gets the Ray Rice treatment here.  Not for teabagging someone.  For ruining her reputation to maintain his image.  Really, really gross.

Then he did it again in 2005 on some documentary.  He didn't mention Naughright's name, but he showed her picture while talking about the issue.

PS: Oh no.  There can be pictures....

How about gifs, incoming science.

It's not just a he said she said.  There was a witness who tried to get Manning to come clean (I'm not sure if he saw the whole incident or part of it).  There's also people who came forward to dispute Manning's account when he tried to take down her character afterwards.

Mass I love you brother but why are we instantly assuming that the document prepared by her lawyers, and in the vacuum of no documents from any unbiased (or biased the other way) are entirely accurate?  I doubt his book is telling the truth but isn't it more likely that the truth lies somewhere in between (as it usually does)?  Her original complaint does not state that he placed his naked butt/####/everything in between on her face, it states that he flashed her.  Isn't that a notable difference in her story between 1996 & 2001?

I am not saying she is lying but wow, how many times has a person been accused without evidence had their reputation destroyed only to find out later that the the story does not hold up to scrutiny?  You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube on things like this.  People never remember the retraction, only the accusation.  Where is the moderation?  The "Innocent until proven guilty" mentality that is supposed to govern our judicial system?

There are documents.  There are affadavits from people disputing Manning's account, and also disputing he and his father's impression of that victim.
