***PGA Championship Thread*** DJ keeping weekend free with Walker atop leaderboard (1 Viewer)

Chunk it on the green and two putt is still not hard, but what in the world was he thinking?  Easy iron, easy wedge, easy two putt was drama free there.

4 first-time Major winners this year.  We have a group of young studs at the top, but also a ton of depth.

Definitely a competitive group.  Is Rory even in the conversation anymore though?
Of course.  He only had 15 starts this year with 4 top 3s and 6 top 10s.  The 2 MCs at Majors will leave a really bad taste for the year, but he'll still be top 5 in the WGR.  He needs to start over on his putting.

Good ending. Loved that both players didn't choke.

I also found walker's play curious there, but looking back on it I think it makes some sense. Iron off the tee seemed the safe, ensure no disaster play. Especially on the tee when he was three up. However, I think when he got up there to hit his second shot he realized he was only one up. So, the thought process is, how do I ensure par? A lay up actually puts water in play, if there's a bad shot. Up around the green was man made structures so, really, no huge danger. At that point I think the thought process was "let me just get this over the water and up around the green and I'll make my par."  So, basically, one decent three wood and he's home. Even green side bunker is fine. Of course, he goes and short sides himself so it got harder than necessary, but I think I see the strategy.

Probably a good place to post one of my favorite pieces of memorabilia.  It's a flag from the previous PGA championship at Baltusrol signed by its winner, Phil Mickelson.  It's framed and the whole nine yards

A former boss gave it to me on my final day of work.

I sort of agree, but his ball striking was so solid with irons and the greens were so soft the only way he could bring 6 into play was with a horrific lie.  And he almost got it.  Even then, he only had to get it anywhere on the green and 2 putt.  He hit a very smart shot to go long on the pitch - didn't get too cute.  Overall, very impressed with his nerves the entire time.  Solid.  Like Day but happy for Walker.

I had the pleasure of being there yesterday, courtesy of a friend with passes to one of the tents in "Centennial Village" which was right up on 18. Copy/pasting this quoted post over from the Tour thread where I got some good advice...so thanks to Mr. Ected.

If you get there early, then do your walking in the morning (of course after the free food!). Look for a good par three where you can see the green from the tee, so you can see the shot well, as well as the interaction with the caddie over the club and where to hit. (I would bet the tee at the Postage Stamp at The Open a couple weeks would have been the best spot on the course!) Then when things get interesting at the end of the day take advantage of the hospitality area. Check it out when you are there in the morning to see where to go for the best view!
Overall, the weather was much better than expected. Forecast was for 85% of rain from basically 1p-6p and while there were a couple times of steady drizzle, there was only about a 5 minute period of really hard rain. But the forecast changed our plans in that we didn't want to get too far from the clubhouse area so if the weather got terrible we could make it back as quickly as possible. And that was part of the issue...with how much rain came in over the prior couple days, the walkways were some of the heaviest mud I've ever seen. There was just no way to quickly move anywhere. We basically stayed in the area that had 1, 3, 4, 17, and 18 which was enough for us.  We hit the tent first and had a good view of Phil finishing up on 18.

Highlight was hanging around the 4th which is the signature hole. We had good spots both up at the green and at the tee. Was at the green for Adam Scott, Zach Johnson, and Summerhays. Moved down to be right on the rope at the tee box for Spieth and Fowler. Oh, and we also saw a grizzled 80 year old cameraman up at the green almost murder some guy because he thought he was purposely putting his umbrella up in the way of the camera crane. From there we moved quickly up to 1 to see Stenson, Day, and Walker tee off.

Back to Hospitality from there for more food/drinks. We had a perfect view of the 18th green, where the grandstand was dead center from our angle. So it was cool seeing everyone walking up/finishing.

I would definitely go back to a non-major tournament on a nice day when you could do some more walking. That just wasn't in the cards yesterday but a real fun time.
