Phillip Seymour Hoffman (1 Viewer)

I thought he was a fantastic actor, but he had a long history of drug abuse. Very unfortunate he could never get it under control.

Two young kids, and he's messing around with drugs like this?
Sounds like he's had a problem going back to graduating drama school in 2006.
I do think as you look back at all of his roles and you see certain things that are unteachable to actors, meaning Hoffman owns certain facial expressions and moods but perhaps that was an outpouring from the heroine. I assume he was not dosing while making the films but that might be a major leap of faith on my part. If he was, he could had head major withdrawals at different points in different films, might have made a difference as to what we thought we were watching.

Been a big fan since the mid-90s and a few months ago was the first time I'd ever heard of him being associated with heroin. The reports then were that he'd been into a bit as a kid but had 23 years clean prior to going in to detox. Where are you seeing that he had a long history of drug abuse? Not that I care or that it's any of my business, just seems like a presumptuous thing to say based on what I've seen over the years.

That was my understanding. That's hardly a long history of drug abuse. Unfortunately, that's more of a brief history of drug abuse.

OMG, I had to idea that's why this thread was created until I just saw it on Twitter. Unbelievable. So sad.

The actor's actor and I don't use that term lightly. Of those type of actors I probably have just a handful that would include some greats like John Malkovich, Gary Oldman, Peter O'Toole…the term actor's actor means to me from a person who grew up in the theater, this is a guy who the actors themselves want to pay to watch perform.

It just sucks and it doesn't feel any better now than it did when I heard it hours ago.

Oh, no. So sad. What a fantastic actor. We just saw him in Hunger Games 2 a little while ago. RIP and I hope his family will be okay.

The news of Mr Hoffman's death comes just one day after representatives for the actor issued a statement denying he was dead after an internet hoax claimed the star had passed away on Saturday.
Some of you guys owe DSP a pretty big apology imo. Let's see if you man up...
My earlier statement is still true.

Sad. He was a great actor. Single Handedly turned Along Came Polly from a mediocre movie to a really funny movie.

Obviously great in Boogie Nights, but he made the leap into my top tier when he secured the postcard to his spooge globby on the wall in Happiness. Became clear there was no governor on this one.

Was lucky to see him on Broadway in Sam Shepard's True West, with Jon C. Reilly. The guy came off like an open channel in everything he did. A shape-shifter. IMO, the biggest loss to the acting community in my lifetime. I can't think of any bigger.

I noticed they ran a commercial and made sure PSH was in the trailer they ran on TV last night. He also was filming the next 2 installments of the Hunger Games, was done with 1 but had not finished part 2…we don't know if his character was done filming or if they will have to re-write/cut him out or re-cast/re-shoot which could be a real PIA.

I'm sure they'll try to use the footage if there's enough to do anything at all with, especially if his performance was good (which we have no reason to assume it wouldn't be). How many people saw that batman movie who wouldn't otherwise have seen it just because of Heath Ledger?

Wikipedia says he was an addict at a young age and was clean for over 20 years. He got into prescription drugs in 2012 and then started back on heroin. Family did an intervention last May and he did 10 days of detox.

Goes to show you that battling addiction is a lifetime process. Being clean for a really long time doesn't mean you are cured.

Yep. Just means that next fix after you've been away for years is going to feel so incredibly awesome.

hey brohans here is what i liked about him you could take a movie that the subject just made me go i do not really want to watch that but if he was in it i would and generally wound up liking the movie he was really good what a loss

I don't understand people getting involved with heroin? If you need to get out of your head for awhile, just sit in your recliner and do some whiskey shots. Christ how bad off can you have it when you are a millionaire playing make believe.

Suicide? I have no reason to speculate that, and know nothing about heroin, but that seems like quite a bit to just have laying around.

I was thinking that yesterday.

If you are a former addict and wanted to commit suicide, what would be the easiest/best way to do it?

Yeah you never see other celebrities, athletes, or artists with drug problems.

Addiction is a #####. Even if you kick the habbit, the itch will always remain with you. It's very hard not to scratch.
Yeah it makes 0 difference who you are or how much money you have, other than you can afford more ####. As evidenced here.

Wait, is MOP really feigning anger at an actor he has never met before for using drugs and overdosing?

Go see a psychiatrist or something bud.

We're talking about Phillip Seymour- Hoffman right? By the way was he some kind of cross between Jane Seymour and Dustin Hoffman?

Terrible news. Why do so many celebrities, particularly rock stars and movie stars, succumb to this? What is it in the culture of these professions that brings on such death seeking behavior? Never understood it.
