Pizza Bagels, Genius! (1 Viewer)

You can't get #1 picks year after year and continue to suck. They'll get it right eventually.
Don't underestimate the Browns -- they're pretty good at sucking!  :P

Seriously though I agree with you guys.  If Kizer is the real deal there could be a major balance of power shift in the AFCN within the next 2 years.

A few notes:

  • Bradford on the injury report. If he somehow misses this game, our odds shoot way up.
  • All of our sacks took longer than 4 seconds. That could be due to good coverage, or due to Kizer being a rookie. If we play a veteran QB, the odds of sacking him after 4 seconds is much lower because the ball will already be gone.
  • Villanueva looked bad. Well, our whole line looked bad. Hope they can get it together this week, but the Vikings D is more troublesome than the Browns.
  • Don't forget to root for the Browns this weekend against the Ravens!!  That D is formidable, but I honestly think the Browns have a shot.

Steelers traditionally lights-out in openers in recent years - normally always play solid at HOME. Bradford/Diggs/Cook will be a challenge and they will get theirs, although I think players to watch for this week on offense are Martavis, Eli Rogers & Jesse James. The Vikings have a stout run D and Xavier Rhodes will likely be on Antonio most of game (not sure if he shadows or not).

Martavis is going to need to stretch field vs. Trae Waynes to take top off of the defense, while Eli & JJ need to win their control middle of field to be Ben's safety valve.

Bell is going to have another tough week and while AB will get some catches, I don't think he'll be able to exploit MIN's secondary like he did CLE's.

Vikings at Steelers
MDS’s take: These looked like two of the better teams in the league last week. I don’t think Sam Bradford is going to be able to do against the Steelers’ defense what he did against the Saints’ defense, and so I’m picking Pittsburgh.

MDS’s pick: Steelers 20, Vikings 13.

Florio’s take: The Vikings haven’t won in Pittsburgh since 1995. They’ve only player there twice since then, however. This year, perhaps they’re better than many expected. That still may not be good enough to take down a potential Super Bowl contender in their own stadium.

Florio’s pick: Steelers 23, Vikings 20.

Why does everything I read downplay Jesse James in this offense. He seemed to be the first look on both his TD's. If hes the TE1 in this offense he should have value correct? Any of the homers have a take?

He's not really a special talent and the team has so many other better options.  I believe you'll see a lot more 3/20/0 type games than what he put up on Sunday.

Updated Injury News:

  • Tuitt questionable
  • Dupree no longer on injury report, should play
  • Wilcox and McDonald questionable
  • Bradford, Rhodes, and Barr all questionable
If Bradford and Rhodes don't play, our odds go way up.

Kinda off topic, but I came across this while looking at injury reports:

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Dolphins SLB Lawrence Timmons has left the team and is uncertain for Week 2 against the Chargers.

According to La Canfora, Timmons' "whereabouts are known," but the team is "weighing the situation" ahead of this afternoon's kickoff. Timmons flew with the team to California this weekend. We'll update the situation as it develops. Miami is already forced to start UDFA Mike Hull at the MIKE spot.
Any idea what's up with Timmons?

Supposedly not serious.
Hope so, he did miss the rest of the game though. Probably just being cautious. Interesting thing was Chick played in his place. Harrison was nowhere to be found. (and Chick is playing great!)

ETA: 0 snaps yesterday and only 4 in week 1 for Harrison. They're either saving him or have moved on until needed.

Solid play by the defense yesterday aided greatly by the absence of Sam Bradford.

The offense continues to struggle on 3rd down and a lot of is not very good play from the offensive line.   Previously considered to be one of the strengths of this team,  they have been underwhelming in the first two weeks, particularly their run blocking.   I think they will continue to get better but they are certainly not looking like one of the best offensive lines in the league.   You do have to give credit to the Vikings defense though -- they played tough.

Once again WAY too many penalties.

Overall a better performance than week 1 but there is still plenty of work to do.   You can't take anything for granted in the NFL but having the Bears this week and then the Jags at home the next week should give the Steelers time to improve before they have to go on the road to face the Chiefs.

Hubbard was way better against Griffen than Villanueva. Maybe he was tired by then though from running right past 78.

Agreed.  I heard that Villanueva was ill all last week and didn't feel all that well yesterday.

Another interesting tidbit was that James Harrison suited up but did not play a down, even after Watt left the game.   I can't imagine he is too happy about that

When I heard Watt was sitting out my thought was "Next man up is Harrison"   :towelwave:

Then never seeing him at all. Strange.

Did you enjoy the game?   How were the seats?
Heck yeah! A win is always good. The Rooney tribute was very nice, esp Ben and then Deebo running around the field with the flag. Seats were covered by the upper level thank goodness. A little hard for my old eyes to see the other other end of the field but I could watch the big board when needed. Probably going to the Pirates tonight. Tickets should be easier to get and cheap. :D

Yeah tickets for the Buds will be plentiful

Some takeaways from the game:

  • Our offense still looked sluggish. The play calling was better than week 1, but Big Ben didn't look great. Missed some good opportunities and didn't seem to go through his progressions on some plays where a WR/TE would be streaking down the field open but he only had eyes for AB.
  • Bell looked better, but still didn't have much room to run.
  • Villanueva looked awful. Our O-line got much better after he came out. Maybe it was due to illness, idk, but he is not living up to the paycheck.
  • Our D looked stout again. Wish we'd done a bit more against a backup QB, but Keenum was getting the ball out quickly and Diggs/Cook are truly talented.
  • Our kicking game is on point!
  • Overall, we won, so I'm happy. But I don't think we were good enough to beat a top 10 team, and I don't think we'll win Oct 1st against the Ravens if our offense doesn't improve.

They're @Baltimore in between these games (week 4) - Jags are week 5.

By the way, if any of yinz find yourself in Atlanta on a Sunday during football season, go to a place called Smith's Olde Bar for the game.  I was there for the CLE game (running from Irma) and it was a mob of Steeler fans - great atmosphere, good drinks, good wings.  I'd advise either calling ahead to see if you can reserve a table or else get there by noon ET at the latest, there were only a few tables that weren't reserved for local Steelers diehards and I was lucky to grab the last one.  By 1:00, it was SRO throughout the entire venue, which had 3 good sized rooms that I could see - must have been north of 100 people in black & gold there.  Place was rocking and rolling from the opening kick through the final whistle.  I counted at least 30 different jerseys, including a frigging Boswell.  I figured I'd be the only one there rocking a TJ Watt, but sure enough, there was another dude 20 feet away also wearing #90.  We had numerous opportunities to stand and point at one another.

Week 4, I'll be on the road in SLC and have my viewing spot staked out already, the place I used to go to for games when I lived out there.  They haven't seen me in 16 years.  Week after that, I'll be in Vegas and have a location picked out there too, I'll make sure to give you guys the skinny on both.

This was also the case week 1 and I sure hope Ben shakes this habit.

And I agree with you -- we're going to need to play much better to beat Baltimore in their house

At both Heinz and last night at PNC, #90 shirts were all over the place.

Against the Bears, if we win by less than 10 pts it will be a disappointment. Also, this should be a get right game for Leveon. Great chance to start the season 3-0.

Didn't realize Watt got injured on Punt Coverage. Reminiscent of when Polamalu got hurt on Kickoff Coverage and was out for weeks. I get that special teams is important, but how about not using our stars on Coverage?

Also, looks like Watt and Gilbert should play, but not Tuitt this week. And the closer we get to the game, the more worried I get about the Steelers playing down to their opponent. I know that Glennon beat us back in 2014 and they've been showing the tape to the team this week, but this seems like a letdown game with the Ravens up on the horizon.

Watt shouldn't be on punt coverage IMO.

I'm not worried about the "playing down to their opponent" as much as I am worried that the offense is just not in sync yet, particularly the o-line.

if they were at home I would agree. On the road, I will just be happy with a win.

Watt out this week and Gilbert very iffy as well.

Did anyone see why Harrison didn't get any snaps last week? I found it very odd.

Agreed. Saw it when it happened and noticed he didn't come back. He's too good and too valuable to have him out there. I get that you put your best players on the field (I.e. AB doing punt returns) but as hard as he plays he needs to be D only. The position he plays is grueling enough.

Steelers will stay in locker room during national anthem today in Chicago per NFLN... social poop gonna hit the fan now.

Expecting widespread protests.

Didn't Harrison once say something to the effect of : anyone on my team who doesn't stand for the anthem will get an ###-whipping? I wonder if he's softened on that or if there are others on the team that want to protest, so they're keeping it under wraps so he doesn't get forced to back that up.

IIRC that was some sort of twitter hoax
