Brady will carve up the Steelers D week 15 and wrap up home field advantage unless the Steelers quit with the zone D. He owns them. He also owns Jack Del Rio teams for the same reason and that guy has never changed his D vs Brady. How are these guys coaching in the NFL? If you are beat everytime you use zone against Brady and other teams have beat him with man to man, why would you keep your losing philosophy?

Are you seriously questioning how Tomlin has a job in the NFL?  You may want to look at his record as a coach.  This just in - the Patriots are kind of good.  They own a lot of teams.

They didn't have the talent/depth to play man

Steelers OT Marcus Gilbert suspended 4 games for violating NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances. 4th Steeler in 3 years suspended multiple games: Bryant all of ’16, Bell 3 in ’16, 2 in ’15.
I'm guessing it was growth hormones to help shorten time to come back from inury but he's gotta be smarter than that.   Hubbard's been decent in Gilbert's absence and Gilbert will be back before the playoffs.

I have comments but the Patriots are a non-issue until week 15 and we have 3 games before then to worry about.  The Steelers shouldn't be looking past anyone, including the Packers this week.

Tomlin's Quotes Before the Game Tonight

Always nice when your coach makes quotes like this and your team can't back it up.
As I've had the night to digest this, I'm really disappointed by Tomlin's comments.  I don't understand why this team keeps bringing on these unnecessary distractions.  They're in such a good position and all they have to do is just stay focused.  Now the head coach is essentially overlooking 3 games (including 2 against the top division rivals) and looking ahead to New England (including a 2nd matchup in the AFC championship game)?  Last night should have been more than a 3 point win.

On to the good  - the 3 Bs are looking great again.  It was nice to see Bryant recover after that horrific drop.  However, the team will need Juju healthy to make a serious run.  Ben played a very good game and was just hurt by a few terrible drops and that deflection.  He's definitely starting to look like the Ben of old.  The defense was on and off last night.  When they don't get pressure on the QB, this secondary will get exposed big time.  Burns is looking like a pretty big bust.  Watt and Shazier running around like lunatics           Despite Boswell's missed extra, I still have complete confidence in that guy when the game matters.  9-2 is 9-2 and hard to argue with results (even though it hasn't looked pretty).  They have a stranglehold on the division.  Go Texans!!!

While I agree that Tomlin shouldn't be making those comments about winning it all and the Patriots I don't think it necessarily means they aren't focused.  On the other hand the media (especially local media) has been obsessed with the Patriots for weeks now.  It's even crept into this thread.  It IS the elephant in the room but I prefer not to address it until week 15 when it matters.  I just wish the head coach would have said the same.

As far as distractions go this team seems to thrive on them.

The 3 point win doesn't concern me in the least.  There are no style points and it should be a clear indication to the team that they need to play better.

I agree with the bolded.  I don't have an issue with the fans/media looking ahead.  That's what we do.  I just don't want to hear it from the coach/players.

I provided the link a few posts above.
Thanks for posting that link.  After seeing that I'm fine with the comments about NE and winning the SB.  It wasn't a bombastic arrogant Rex Ryan sound bite - Tomlin was just acknowledging the upcoming game(s) against NE and that the team has the ingredients to be a SB winner.

I recommend the entire interview but it's nearly 20 minutes long.  If you don't want to sit through the whole thing check out from 15:55 when he's asked about his tenure and how long he wants to coach - it provides some insight into Tomlin as a father which I think is pretty cool.

Yeah I know I'm probably in the minority and I had no problem with any of it until about the 18 minute mark.  I just think that the better way to respond would be to just say "we're focused on Green Bay right now" and leave it at that.  I know at the end of the day none of this should matter.  The results are determined on the field.  I just see how New England composes themselves every year and I wish the Steelers would do the same

There was definitely a mix of the good and bad last night. We came up with the win, and at the end of the day that's all that matters, but it would feel better if it was a convincing win, instead of a close call.

  • AB, Ben, and Bell all played excellent. Ben missed a couple opportunities, but more often than not, it was the receivers screwing up (missed a bomb TD to AB and checked down instead).
  • AV - He seems to have a hurt ankle, so maybe that's the excuse, but he got dominated on some plays.
  • Artie - He screwed up on the long Cobb TD and committed a costly hands to the face penalty, but he's definitely improved this year over last. He's also very young, so he should be able to keep improving and I still have high hopes for him. If he can play his best football in the coming months, that's all I care about.
  • Shazier - Had one big screw-up, but overall played great. We need him healthy so hopefully the ankle is no big deal. Also, the look on his face after the Williams TD was priceless. He was almost distraught over his error.
  • Tuitt and Heyward - They're beasts and they continue to blow up the backfield. Surprised we didn't blitz more to help them out, but they were able to be play-makers regardless.
  • Jesse James - He had some clutch catches, and some major drops. On some, it seemed like he was trying to set the football in a volleyball match, that's how hard he pushed the ball away from himself. Can't wait for Vance to be back. He has bad hands too, but it might be fun to see someone new drop the ball.
  • Eli Rogers - Get him off the field. He kept getting open, but it didn't matter because the ball would clang off his hands as if he were a statue. He proved why we need Juju fully healthy ASAP.
  • Juju - Please don't bring him back before he's fully healed. Even if this means we lose to Cincy or whoever. We need him fully healthy for the playoffs, and Hamstrings can be easily re-aggravated so it's just not worth it.
  • Hubbard - He had 1 play where he let up on his block, and the defender ended up chasing down Leveon for a minimal gain. Other than that, he played very well.
  • Boswell - Hope he got the game ball. I don't care that he missed the extra point. He tied the record for longest FG in Heinz Field for the walk-off win. He deserves it. Definition of clutch.
  • Tomlin - The team should be better than this. I'm not sure it falls on his head since several of the long TDs, it was clear that players were off their assignments, but we need to cut down on the penalties and improve the time management. When Hundley was sacked on their final drive, Tomlin should have called a TD.  Also, we're going to play against a bad team on the road next Monday. If we lose, I place part of the blame on Tomlin. This team has historically underperformed on the road against bad opponents, and they will want to be focused on the Pats, since they're looming large, but he has to keep them focused on the now.
We won, and the offense looked pretty good, but it was a bit close for comfort and they need to do better in the turnover ratio.

Tonight's the night. We might be without AB. Even without him, we should be able to handle the Bengals, but it will be a lot tougher.

If we can win the turnover differential and prevent any TDs of 30 yards or longer, we'll win this game.

Seven pages buried in Shark Pool as we're about to play the Bengals on MNF?   We're slipping...

Just to get the juices flowing.  Burfict is maintaining that AB faked the concussion.  What an idiot.

Speaking of AB:  reportedly he is going to test out the toe in pregame warm-ups.  My guess is the Steelers already know if he's playing or not and are just being a little coy.  Vance McDonald and Mike Mitchell have been ruled out and of course Haden.  Ryan Shazier is no longer on the injury report and James Harrison may be activated.

The Bengals will be missing 3 starting defensive players:  OLB Nick Vigil and key reserve Vincent Rey have been ruled out. Vigil leads the team with 79 tackles while Rey is fourth on the team with 56. Rookie Jordan Evans, a 2017 sixth round selection, is likely to get the start.

Starting strong safety Shawn Williams is also out. DE Michael Johnson is listed as questionable and may not be able to suit up either.

Looking forward to this game.  GO STEELERS! :towelwave:

Don’t really care about the game anymore.  I have no issues if the Steelers get blown out tonight.  Can’t blame anyone for that.  Just hoping Shazier can walk again.

Yay?

Honestly, I can't stand these Bengals games. We're already in the end times of NFL football. One of these games is likely to be the final nail in the coffin someday. Just like the playoff game a couple of years ago, there's little joy in this.

That said, f*** the Bengals. F*** Vontaze Burfict. Glad this effectively ends Cincy's playoff hopes.

Next week we play to clinch the division. Week after, we play for home field in the AFC.

I honestly don’t care that much about what happens going forward. The only thing on my mind right now is Shazier’s health.  I’m going to be hitting F5 a lot tomorrow.  Good night all.

Prayers for Shazier.  Hope he turns out OK, that's all that really matters here.  When you hit your knees tonight keep this young man in your prayers.

Some good news coming out from Steelers. Two players called Shazier's injury a spinal chord concussion, comparable to Tommy Maddox injury in 2002; Maddox missed 1 game. Encouraging news, another said.
Good to hear. I saw Colbert’s statement that he didn’t need surgery but it’s good to hear what the actual problem may be. Just very thankful if it’s not a fratured spine.

If the Bouchette report is true, it’s going to take some time for full feeling in the extremities to come back. The “good” news is Samari Rolle twice had spinal contusions and had a full career. Found the old Tommy Maddox articles and he had the contusion on Nov. 17 and was back on the field Dec. 06. Now there is a hell of a lot of factors I don’t know but that would be the absolute best case for anyone thinking about his football availability. Obviously the guy is going to have much larger questions to face than getting back on the football field. And, really, I’m just hoping that everything falls in place for him continuing a fully functional life. Football is secondary until given the clean bill of health.

Great news about Shazier!  But I'm still kinda bummed / emotionally spent from last night.  Ju Ju seems like a good guy and hopefully he'll be Steeler for a long time - I liked his comments after the game regarding the hit on Burfict.  AB screaming KARMA in the background is bad form.

Bad form, but Burfict shouldn't be in the league.  Even worse was Gruden on his jock all night saying what a great, throwback, tough player he is instead of calling him out as a ####.

Well thankfully it seems like Shazier avoided the worst possible news.  Just hoping the guy can recover and play football again. He truly is one of the best defensive players in football and he plays with such passion.

Last night's game was such a turnoff to me (putting aside the Shazier injury).  I can't believe how little control these teams display when they play each other.  It truly is a bad look for the league.

Loved to see the resiliency in this team after probably the worst half of football I've ever seen (which obviously is justified).  Ben has been doing a good job of recovering after some slow starts.  The defensive play calling in the first half was head scratching. In the 2nd half, they improved but partially aided by some really bad drops from Bengals receivers and a horrible holding call that negated a TD.  They're going to have to do a better job with the pass rush or Flacco and Brady will eat that secondary alive.  And why the #### are they always playing 10 yards off the receiver?  We already know that won't work against New England.

The good news is they're definitely in great shape to win the division and probably lock up a bye.  What they do with all of that?  I have no clue.

Great to hear that Shazier's injury may not be as serious as it looked last night.   It sounds like he dodged a bullet and that is much more important than any football game.

That said I do not share the sentiment about feeling turned off or bummed out.   I am pumped that Shazier's okay, the Steelers are 10-2, the Bungles are toast and the team showed a hell of a lot of heart after a piss-poor start and dealing with their emotions after seeing their teammate carted off.

Next week we have the opportunity to knock off the Ravens and the week after that play for what will likely be for home-field advantage.  Sounds good to me.

I wasn't turned off or bummed out by the outcome of the game or where the Steelers stand.  Yes the Steelers are in great shape and I'm happy about that.  i was turned off by how ugly the game got.  I was bummed about the whole Shazier thing.  Obviously today's news seems to be positive.

That was what I was hoping for when I saw the play. That is best case scenario.
