Pizza Bagels, Genius! (1 Viewer)

I know very little about this guy except that I had him on my fantasy team for a cup of coffee a few years back and he bricked for me.  Moving down a few spots in the draft doesn't seem like much of a price though (Steelers 4th round pick should theoretically only be 5-10 picks before the SF 5th rounder, not counting compensatory picks.)
Yeah the price tag isn't very high but the Steelers obviously felt the need to upgrade at the position.

ETA: I would prefer to see them make a trade for a competent defensive back though...

I don't understand the Green cut unless his career is over. Poor foresight by the FO and really a costly position to be in after the draft. I still think they should hit up SF for Vance McDonald or Blake Bell if they don't see those guys as future pieces.

Check out this guy, here. :bowtie:

Love it!

SF must like what they have seen from George Kittle

eta his contract

12/9/2016: Signed a six-year, $35.8 million contract. The deal contains $16 million guaranteed, including a $7 million signing bonus. McDonald is eligible for an annual $750,000 roster bonus and $150,000 workout bonus throughout the contract's life. 2017: $2.1 million, 2018: $3.7 million, 2019: $4.2 million, 2020-2021: $5.5 million, 2022: Free Agent

I posted this in the Vance McDonald thread, but it really belongs here..

Last year, the Steelers 4th rounder was pick 135 and the SF 5th rounder was pick 146.  An 11-pick move that far into the draft is almost like giving him away.  Based on both Chase's and the "NFL" draft pick value charts, the difference is the equivalent of a late 7th rounder (roughly pick 213-215)

Didn't he just sign a contract extension this off-season?  How much of the guaranteed money are the Steelers on the hook for?

While this may not have cost them much in draft capitol, it's a significant outlay of their cap, no?

There are some cap ramifications, but not too much.  His cap figure for this year is roughly $4.1M, which would be the 8th highest on the team, but after displacement, I think he'll count about 3.5M against their cap # for this year.  However, about half the guaranteed money in the contract is paid out this year, so they could conceivably cut him with a minimal dead-money hit (about $4M after year 1, $2.8M after year 2, $1.4M after year 3) if he doesn't work out.  Depending on whether or not they sign Tuitt to an extension, and what ramifications that has on this year's cap, this could mean the end of the line for Arthur Moats.  He's the player most likely to be cut to clear cap space as he's clearly the 5th option at OLB now and releasing him would only mean a $600,000 dead money hit and would save them $2.2M in cap room.

If they cut David Johnson after this move, that's another $900k in cap savings with only a $100k dead money hit.  If Senquez Golson is released (as expected), they shave another $800k with a $300k cap hit.  I expect both of those moves to occur.  If they cut those two and Moats, they only eat about $1M in dead money, which they can easily carry this year, and knock $3.9M off their cap number, which is enough to completely absorb McDonald's figure after displacement without using any available "space" to re-sign Tuitt.

Don't mind that trade at all.  McDonald's still a bit more of an athlete than a football player though.  After 4 or 5 years in the league now, I'm assuming he "is what he is", but....not like they have any lights out options at TE right now.  And as mentioned, they pretty much got him for just salary.

He's certainly another big target for the RZ/from the slot.  His career yards per reception is actually pretty good for a TE(albeit, I'm guessing he has been run from the slot quite a bit too).  Needs to work on the catch% though.  Drop rate is hella bad.

McDonald can be a great TE, but he also misses time due to injury fairly regularly.  He was signed to a big contract, but SF is paying for some of it. It cost us 1 round, but really just a dozen spots or so as Evilgrin said.  Overall I like the trade a lot, but I wish it was Ragland.

He tends to drop the ball a lot, but that could be a result of Colin K throwing the ball and maybe his rapport with Big Ben will be better.

I really hope we sign Tuitt to a long term contract before the season. Shazier too if possible. I think he's either going to get hurt or have an amazing year and cost a ton down the line.

I don't know all the details of his contract, but Caplan just tweeted :

While McDonald is signed through 2021, PIT can get out of his deal if they cut him by 4/1/2018. $3.7m for 2018 becomes fully gtd on 4/1.

According to ESPN, this is largely correct.

The Niners must absorb the remaining portion of McDonald's $7 million signing bonus on this year's salary cap, which isn't a problem because they've got the most cap space in the league.

McDonald's contract won't handcuff the Steelers, who will take a $4.162 million cap hit in 2017 but can escape the contract next year if willing to accept $4.2 million in dead money.

I'm pretty happy with the trade and think Vance will be an upgrade at the position, but this line from the article is a silly:  Before he’s even put on his uniform, McDonald is the best run after catch (RAC) threat on the team.

Did they forget about AB and M. Bryant?

And Le'Veon Bell...

Yeah was thinking he meant at TE

Joe Haden have anything left or is this Darrelle Revis part 2?
He's been injured the last two years, but it seems the consensus is that he's healthy now, just not worth $8 million this year.  That said, I think he'd be an upgrade at CB for us (never a huge fan of Cockrell, idk why) and the Steelers are apparently showing interest according to Rappaport.  Also, if Haden wants to join a potential SB team and stick it to the Browns, the Steelers are the best choice. The Chiefs and Saints are also interested, and the Chiefs would be the 2nd best chance for a SB ring of the group, but he wouldn't get to trounce the Browns twice per year.

But if it comes down to money my guess he'll be a Chief or Saint...

ETA:  I hear the Cowboys are also interested.

Steelers in mix for CB Joe Haden, and are now considered heavy favorites to land him per Schefter & Josina Anderson.

Not sure how I feel about that
Strengthens position that is considered weak link on Defense, Cockrell and Sensabaugh don't appear like the answers for this upcoming season.

Given Steelers win-now mentality in twilight of Ben's career, & considering investment would be minimal due to Browns commitment subsidizing the signing, I would endorse this move. Haden likely not player that he was in his prime, but likely will enhance the CB corp until Cam Sutton gets more seasoning.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Steelers are the "favorite" to sign free agent CB Joe Haden.

Most signs have been pointing to this over the past hour. Haden, 28, isn't going to last long on the open market. A plus starter when healthy, Haden should have his pick of the litter. Signing with the Steelers would give Haden a chance to stay in the same division and not have to pick up his bags and move far, while also providing a real chance at the playoffs. Haden will have a home soon.

Yeah, how'd that last Cleveland CB work out for us??

But I'm cautiously optimistic on this one.
The Gilbert trade was an attempt to take a flyer on a high draft pick that never-was.  Hayden is a 2x pro-bowl player that may or may not be washed up.  He's been plagued by injuries but is still only 28 so if he is healthy he is likely to be a significant upgrade over Cockrell and Sensabaugh.

Haden was due to make $11.1 million this season which is probably why Cleveland couldn't find someone willing to trade.

I'm not sure how they know the Steelers are the favorite. The same ESPN article said that he can't talk to teams until 4pm...

Anyways, I'd be happy if they brought him in. He's still in his prime for a CB (28) and if he can get healthy he could be excellent for us. Even if he is semi-over-the-hill, I think he's still better than some of our CBs.

If he returns to form, our secondary goes from a liability, to less of a liability!

Per Aditi Kinkhabwala & Ian Rapoport - FA Joe Haden traveling to Charlotte to meet with Steelers ahead of Thursday's exhibition in Carolina.

per Schefter, looks like a deal agreed upon: Steelers to sign ex-Brown Joe Haden  3 yrs $27 mil, $7 mil guaranteed yr 1

Lotta money. Hope he can resurrect the strong performance from his glory days.
Key figure in this deal: 1 yr, $7 mil. I am assuming nothing is guaranteed after yr 1, can move on if not up to par. It is well worth the risk to improve your CB corps in my opinion

Also - thing I like about signing - Schefter said he turned down more lucrative deals so he could become a Steeler. Always want someone playing for you who wants to be there, not just because you are the highest bidder.
