Players that FBGs was high on preseason... (1 Viewer)

I noticed when joining FBG that the writers and more knowledgable posters had real man-crushes on certain players.

Samie Parker- has he done a thing? Yes, no Trent Green, but whatever. He's a turd.

Ben Watson- disappointing start to the season, but could end up putting up some big numbers. It doesn't really look like Brady is going to stop using all of his weapons and hone in on Watson as some were prognosticating.

Ernest Wilford- one of the silliest man-crushes I've seen on here. Matt Jones > Reggie Williams > E Wilford. And Matt Jones sort of sucks.

Aaron Brooks- do I even need to say anything?

Vick- nice call. who would have thought he would be looking like VY did in college? That type of QB in that scheme is pretty damn unstoppable. Good foresight

Coles- wow. he's like the best receiver in fantasy right now.

Gore- his value is (supposedly) at a peak right now, but still a good call

Are there any other players that these dudes were swooning over that I'm forgetting about?

I had man love for Michael Vick, Chester Taylor, and to a lesser extent for Frank Gore. I also had Jon Kitna and Roy Williams ranked very high but that hasn't panned out yet. I think if you look at anyone's rankings or projections there will be some that are really astute and some that are pretty off base. That's the nature of the beast, I'm afraid.

Shouldn't we give it at least a few more weeks before we start deciding if we were right or wrong on guys?

On the flip side, I thought portis was dropped way too low. In hindsight, that projection doesn't look so bad.

Please, Lee Evans, for the love of God prove me right and do something, anything, except burn me for 14 more weeks.

TIA

My two sure-thing value picks last year were LJ and Boldin. Both hit.

This year I didn't have as clear a feel on my favorite value picks and didn't think there were any real sure things, but Gore was at the top of my list, followed by D. Jackson, Michael Clayton and Michael Turner. I like what I've seen from Gore, but the rest will require more time (in retrospect I think I may be dead-wrong on Clayton). I also think Leinart will end up a great one, but that may not happen this year.

I thought the season was over after week 2? Didn't they just play the Super Bowl?
It is 1/8th of the season. In many leagues it is 1/7th of the games that determine if you make the playoffs. In the NFL every game counts, it is true in FF as well. Not saying it is everything, but it is meaningful.

Very nice value picks. I liked them both, but didn't take them in any leagues, and both have outperformed my expectations so far.

On the flipside I have McGahee and feel the same way. I should have known better than to draft any player from a team with no O-line and no QB. But I fell for the hype and OD'd on the Kool-aid. "McGahee in best shape of his life and will be used in various ways...blah, blah." :wall:However, I was high on Antonio Bryant and have him in all 4 of my leagues.

This is the sort of thread that doesn't have much meaning unless your talking about a specific staff member's rankings. For instance, Mark Wimer deserves tons of credit for promoting Antonio Bryant. Luckily I was swayed and have Bryant on almost all of my rosters. I think I nailed Brooks (had him at QB25). On the flip side I really missed on Carnell Williams. Luckily I only drafted in the 5-8 slots in one draft.

How could this thread be 20 posts long and still no mention of Wali Lundy?

That's looking like the biggest whiff of the year, after he was being hailed as the Willie Parker of 2006. The guy went in the 5th round in my league on pure hype.

You could probably add Mike Bell to that as well.

Matt Jones "sort of sucks"??? Did you watch the game on Monday night? The dude's got great hands. He snatched a couple balls that it seemed he had no shot at catching. The Jags just need to throw him the ball more.

True, but at least you don't have owners already contemplating dropping Bell.

Can you say... Rueben Droughns where are you???? The hype o-meter on him has been off the charts and just falling flat on its face.

I get that, so a thread about which guys will stay at a high level, bounce back or continue to suck makes a lot of sense (and there are quite a few of them). We're all trying to figure that out at this time of year.A thread about where FBGs or anyone else were right or wrong about 2006 is premature. Right now Frank Gore looks like a top 5 back and Lee Evans looks terrible, but there's a good chance both of those things will have corrected to some degree once the remaining 7/8 of the season is played.

Amen to that. For a kid that's only played WR since Senior Bowl practices two years ago, he looks like he has the makings of something special.Glad I drafted him in the leagues I did. Wish I drafted him in the leagues I didn't

I drafted Troy Williamson based on Joe Bryants Perfect Draft article. I didnt know much about him and blindly drafted him solely on his advice. I'd say after 2 games, as a number 4 receiver drafted in the 12th round, he could end up being a steal. I am still 0-2 but that is a different story.

Exactly. Take a guy like Caddy for instance. He's sucked hard the first two games. He's got close to 300 carries from now til the end to turn it around. I'll give most any player the benefit of the doubt after 2 weeks. 4 weeks is my cutoff when I start to seriously evaluate my roster and the league in general.

Do NOT make fun of Matt Jones around here! We love Matt Jones.
Really? Me I love numbers. I love numbers that give me points that win fantasy football games. Where are the stinkin' numbers with that guy?One question for the Matt Jones lovers of the world: How many NFL weeks did Tyrone Calico occupy your roster space over the last 3 years?

I'm sorry, are we talking about the same guy who is on pace for 1150 yards? He's 6'6", 240 lbs and runs a 4.3 40... the TD's will come along shortly. You cannot cover this guy.I can tell from your statements that you've only looked at the stat lines. You have never seen Matt Jones play, which is surprising considering he beat the vaunted steeler defense for a bunch of first downs and over 70 yards last week on monday night football.

Like Dave said, it's too early to say how right or wrong we were for the season. That said, projecting a player to have good value for the year can yield immediate dividends if he gets off to a hot start and you can either start off well or trade that player at peak value. Some of my more notable selections are below, as I tend to be extreme in either direction if I love a guy or hate a guy. Luckily for me, a lot of the guys who I was high on that I've been wrong about (Culpepper, Clayton, et al) are not on any of my teams. But I wasn't exactly avoiding them. I'm one of those who feel we should be accountable for our rankings, so here are mine for better or worse.

My best hits to this point:

I was higher than any other staffer on my rankings for: Vick, Carr, Rudi, Gore, Desmond Clark. Higher than all but one on Chester Taylor, Antonio Bryant, & Andre Johnson. Also one of three staffers to have Michael Turner in our top 50 RB. I was lower than all but two on Lee Evans, and lower than anyone on Brady, T.Green, Caddy, Chris Brown, Holt, TO, Javon Walker, and Troupe. Sometimes it's just as productive to avoid busts as it is to find sleepers!

My biggest misses to this point:

I was higher than any other staffer on: Culpepper, K.Jones, Kitna, Santana Moss, M.Clayton, Hoosh, Curtis, Bradford, Lloyd. Higher than all but one on Roy Williams. Sometimes I need to not expect the Lions to become the '99 Rams!

I was lower on Toomer and Gado than most (neither one made my top 60 at their positions). I was also lower on Warrick Dunn and Terry Glenn than all but one staff. I had McNabb and Eli lower than anyone else by far. oops.

25 other guys are also currently on pace for 1100 yards. Some of them have even managed to score a TD and play in offenses that consistently throw the ball 30+ times a game and don't try to take the air out of the ball. If Matt Jones has impressed you with his size, speed and athleticism (did you see my Calico comment?), that's great. But the numbers he has put up so far in his career are a dime a dozen -- WR4 stuff. But maybe Jacksonville will indeed start airing the ball out soon?

LOL at matt jones sucks
This guy is one hell of an athlete. There are guys that play the same position in high school and college but cannot make it in the NFL. This guy never played WR in college and he is a starting WR is the NFL in only his 2nd year  .

I feel the same way about Lamont Jordan. I have him in two leagues. I thought he would be solid. But, honestly, I thought the Raiders offense had the potential to be pretty good. :bag:

But these guys have been playing WR for more 2 years...the guy is still learning. He'll be a star.

Let's not get carried away. As Sister Mary Catherine used to tell me, "Keep that up and you'll go blind."

I think Dodds actually wrote that.

I got Antonio Bryant in both my leagues as well as Frank Gore.

2 weeks, Shmoo Cheeks. Kicking myself for not grabbing a stud WR intead of Lamont Jordan. I think we have a pretty good idea after Week 2 he will be the bust of the draft!

Gates was the consensus #1 TE in pre-season. Based on his targets and production so far, he hasn't got a prayer to attain that ranking. How everyone missed such an obvious decline for him this season due to the change at QB still confounds me.
