Pope Francis 12.17.36 - 4.21.25 (6 Viewers)

Time to shut it down.  Someone needs to come out and basically say sorry folks, but Christianity is coming to an end. Thanks for your support over the years.  God is still up there looking over everyone and if you want to start a new religion feel free, but we're done here.
I wouldn't go that far but I think had the Pope excommunicated every cardinal, bishop and other high ranking clergy in the church that took part in the scandal AND allow priests to marry AND allow women to serve as priests it might be viewed as trying to fix the problem.   Instead he just gives it lip service.

He would have to excommunicate himself!!!

There is a reason Paul said do not forbid people to marry.

The extra-Biblical stances of the Catholic Church are at the core of this problem.  They lost their way theologically centuries ago.  Luther tried to get them to fix it and they refused to relent.  Power hungry and greedy, they are the Sudducees/Pharisees of today and the very false prophets Paul warned us about.

More damage is done to humanity by one false teacher than 10,000 atheists.

Pope admits clerical abuse of nuns including sexual slavery

Organized crime group. Bust 'em up.

“When a sister becomes pregnant, the priest insists that she have an abortion,’’ the report added. ‘‘The sister is usually dismissed from her congregation while the priest is often only moved to another parish — or sent for studies.”

African bishops briefed at the time decried the reporting of abuse as “disloyal.”

In 2013, the Rev. Anthony Musaala, a priest in Kampala, Uganda, was suspended and forced to apologize for raising concerns about his fellow priests engaging in sexual relationships with women, including nuns.

How does 10,000, or any number of people, not believing in an imaginary friend in the sky do damage to humanity exactly?

Summit on clergy sex abuse... https://www.npr.org/2019/02/24/697498640/pope-calls-for-all-out-battle-on-clergy-sex-abuse-with-few-specifics  Pope calls for "all out battle".  Necessary step in the right direction or lip service?  I suspect the latter.
I'm going with "other".

I don't think he's being insincere but I also don't think he gets it.

Time for a pope willing to crack some skulls and shake up the current power structure at the diocesan level.  An American pope perhaps?

The vast majority of current cardinals were appointed by Francis. Only four JPII appointments remain eligible to vote because cardinals lose voting rights on their 80th birthday. One of the JPII cardinals Vinko Puljic of Sarajevo will run the conclave if it begins before September.

The percentage of voting European cardinals is the lowest in history (38%) but they still represent the largest continental contingent.

I'm still bitter about losing $100 betting on the conclave that produced Benedict. I thought Cardinal Arinze was a shoo-in.

Cardinal Pizzaballa could be your redemption this time

Pope Pier Pizzaballa has a nice ring to it.

At 9:45 AM, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta with these words:

"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."

I am a Christian, although not Catholic. I always admired how he walked the walk as Jesus did of reaching out to the marginalized and sometimes overlooked parts of society.

He set a good example for all of us.

That's amazing. Please let us know how that was.

Today was already a holiday here in Italy. So it is already quiet. Waiting to see how things shake out locally this week. Serie A cancelled games tonite. I suspect more closures out of respect. We are going to Rome May 9-12 for Caravaggio and a Juventus match at Olimpico, like I said in another thread, maybe I get to see a new pope May 11, Sunday in the square.

Because I’m on vacation and don’t actually know what day it is, I got the date wrong. Tour is tomorrow. Will report back.

The city remains bustling and celebratory even with this news. But the bells haven’t stopped.

Thanks. And I'm sorry to be ignorant, but is there a specific message for the church bells? Is it more a "Something has happened" thing or is it more a mourning thing or something else?

I am not a catholic so I can only assume it’s just recognition that he passed. I’m not close enough to hear the Vatican bells but am surrounded by churches.

It will be interesting to see which way they go with the next pope.

Pope Francis was always looked at as a progressive choice that I'm sure wasn't in alignment with many. I'm guessing that they go a little more traditional with the next choice but then again, who knows what may happen.

I was reading something that Pope Francis appointed 80% of the cardinals eligible to vote in the conclave. That includes a lot of cardinals from countries that were not represented before. It is a going to be a really different group this time around from past conclaves.

Dumb question I'm sure I could google - how exactly is the next Pope chosen?
It's basically a cage match. All cardinals under the age of 80 are sealed in secrecy within the Sistine Chapel. They vote up to 4 times/day until one candidate gets two-thirds of the total vote. If they don't reach 2/3 majority, they burn the ballots and black smoke is emitted from the chapel's chimney. If they reach 2/3 majority, they burn the ballots, and white smoke is released. That's a signal to the world that a new pope has been elected.

He was able to deliver some Easter messages and spoke quite well in his final days. His Good Friday Stations of the Cross are probably the best encapsulation of his message for followers of Christ in our modern times.

Today’s builders of Babel tell us that there is no room for losers, and that those who fall along the way are losers. Theirs is the construction site of Hell. God’s economy, on the other hand, does not kill, discard or crush. It is lowly, faithful to the earth

An economy in which the ninety-nine are more important than the one is inhumane. Yet we have built a world that works like that: a world of calculation and algorithms, of cold logic and implacable interests. The law of your home, the divine economy, is different, Lord
