Pope Frank in the US (1 Viewer)

I like this Pope, and I'm not just saying that because he blessed my niece's son a few months ago.http://s6.postimg.org/gekyiw0ht/image.jpg
That is cool!!!
Yeah, was a big thrill for everyone in our family.

My niece and her husband are big fans of Pope Francis. They're also Jesuits and teach internationally - China 3 years, Palma de Mallorca last year, central Spain this year - and I cannot express how much it meant for them to have Pope Francis lay hands on Xavier.

Ironically, I come from a family of Methodists. My sister married a Catholic; her other child is a headmaster at a small parochial school. My ex-wife married a Catholic, so my son (now 17) was raised Catholic - though apparently Nietzsche recently cured him of that. My mother, R.I.P., converted to Catholicism in her mid-60s, largely because of her grandchildren.

This Pope seems bent on genuine reform and making the Vatican the servant of the Church. I think he is most strongly influenced by how he, as a South American Cardinal, was treated by Rome. I'm not a religious person but acknowledge he has wide influence, and generally speaking I think there is much good he can accomplish while he is still in power. Given his age (79) you wonder how long that might be.
I remember this quote from a John Allen article when he was doing profiles of the would-be papabile in 2013:

"Whether Bergoglio catches fire again as a candidate remains to be seen; one Italian writer quoted an anonymous cardinal on March 2 as saying, "Four years of Bergoglio would be enough to change things." Given his profile, however, Bergoglio seems destined to plan an important role in this conclave – if not as king, then as a kingmaker."

The whole article is an interesting read with 2 years of Francis to reflect on now:

Enjoy him while you can. Francis won't be around forever.

Not a religious person, but I watched because I'm from Philly.

I thought Aretha Franklin was horrible and was very disrespectful not even acknowledging the Pope. She acted liked the people were there to see her.

Also, judging by the aerial views, it looked to me that the crowd on the Parkway was a lot less than they the annual 4th of July festivities. I thinked the locals were scared away by the closed streets and security checkpoints. Saying that - I think the crowds will be much larger for the 4 pm Mass later today

I'm officially on board. I fully believe this is a bait and switch. Say whatever the people want to hear then slip in your agenda.

This is going to be a good 8 years to be a Catholic.

Good.

The valedictorian of my college class lives in San Francisco. They took their oldest daughter to D.C. to see the Pope. They combined it with some other sightseeing naturally, but just struck me as strange they would pull her out of school just so they could stand in a parade route and watch the Popemobile roll by. And they were super geeked to have caught a glimpse of him.

This person was in my fraternity, used to be able to do keg stands for more than two minutes. I spent part of a summer hiking around the Upper Peninsula with them and we were pretty close a long time ago. So....strange...for someone with that kind of intellectual horsepower to just throw it out the window.

People are weird.

Pretty sure that's something they teach in CCD/Confirmation classes.

They are filled with hate.

I'm not a religious guy and do not agree with all of his positions, but he is a great leader and communicator. His overall message is one of unity and just being a good person and neighbor. I like him. I won't be going back to church, but I hope people take his overall message to heart.

Pope Francis secretly meets Kim Davis at Vatican embassy on Thursday of US Visit

Well, this was conveniently omitted from news coverage over the weekend.
The same people who lied for days about a photo I am supposed to believe now? The same law firm that has lied numerous times? Color me skeptical.
It's interesting that the Vatican won't outright deny that this happened to put it to bed. Would put a real damper on his visit in my mind, as visiting Davis to meet one-on-one would be a pretty front and center discussion topic that would force his hand to have addressed and taken a harder stance as for or against gay marriage, as opposed to walking the tightrope very diplomatically on this topic during his visit.

On his way home he said the Mayor of Rome wasn't a real Catholic due to his support for gay marriage. So he's pretty up front on that topic.

Yeah there's not a lot left to interpretation there, but convenient that the quote was made on Italian soil and not while he was here when he was asked to addressed this and tip-toed. I would've had a lot more respect for him if he had said something more direct like that while on US soil in a diplomatic capacity, which would take some brass ones. I don't have a ton of respect for the double speak, not really helping the Catholic church truly address their stance IMO.

Well from the small amount of info leaking it looks like there was probably a meeting. It's possible the Pope didn't know exactly who she was, but maybe he did. His answer on the way home seemed to indicate he wasn't up on the details. Maybe he fibbed. The meeting is what it is but if he followed that up with a lie I would be deeply disappointed and have to rethink my opinion on him. I don't expect him to support gay marriage. I do expect him to be truthful.

No matter what, its disappointing. I guess - like you - I hope he had no idea who she was.

How in the hell did this idiot get a private meeting with the Pope?

Allegedly it was arranged directly with someone at the Vatican. There are many hardliners there who would love to see more Kim Davis' so I could see them wanting to throw her a bone.

Couldn't agree more with NCC; I just want honesty with the guy.

Looking back on my time studying with priests and monks, my most beneficial interactions were with the brutally honest ones. After study and contemplation I came to conclude they were crazy, but I never lost any respect more then because they were applying Catholic dogma and catechism without regard for anything else.

Seems like this dude is running for office with all of the ear tickling he tried to do.

Good job taking a hard stance on gun control, though.

Given that American Catholics are very liberal its easy to understand not wanting to turn this into a battle on gay marriage. A majority of American Catholics support gay marriage. But I doubt anyone thinks he's for it. At the end of the day he is still the Pope. Being against gay marriage and abortion kind of go with the title at this point in history unfortunately.

Yes. It's right after how to steal the pencil cases from and leave gum in the desks of the catholic school kid whose desk you're sitting in on the weekends for CCD class.

Bunch a freakin degenerates.

So it does appear someone slipped one by new Pope. And it appears the only audience he gave was to a former student. A former student who is gay. Along with his partner and family. Davis appears to have been one of a couple of dozen people at a general reception with the Pope. I am cautiously optimistic I didn't misjudge this Pope after all.
