Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs ruled Clinton Portis out for the game against the Dallas Cowboys, an announcement that surprised Portis and created yet another bizarre twist in the running back's injury saga.

"He didn't practice today. ... If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright will be the running backs against the Cowboys. Portis was downgraded from questionable to doubtful on the injury report, with Gibbs citing soreness from the pounding Portis took from playing in the season opener against Minnesota on Monday night.

can't ever remember a year when you have so much doubt about the stories posted on some of these websites (Rotoworld, KFFL, Sportsline, etc.). not only are there stories based on pure speculation, like the Droughns goal line thing, but the ones that actually have a quote behind them also need you to weigh the writer's interpretation, like this one. very frustrating

Gibbs: Portis will not play against Cowboys

NFL.com wire reports

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs ruled Clinton Portis out for the game against the Dallas Cowboys, an announcement that surprised Portis and created yet another bizarre twist in the running back's injury saga.

"It's really just because of soreness," Gibbs said.

"Actually, it's in a different spot in his shoulder. He's got some soreness there that lingered and kept him from practicing this week."

When told what Gibbs had said, Portis was taken back.

"I didn't know the decision had been made," Portis said. "I thought it was a game-time decision. As of now, my bag's packed and ready to go to Dallas, unless they come and tap me on the shoulder in the near future and tell me I ain't going."

Last week, the story was just the opposite. Portis spent several days downplaying his chances to make the season opener, saying he was not in football shape and had yet to recover from a partially dislocated left shoulder that cause him to miss nearly all of preseason. Gibbs then sprung a surprise after the final practice, saying that Portis had tested the shoulder sufficiently and would play as a backup to Betts.

Portis carried 10 times for 39 yards in the 19-16 loss to the Vikings, but he has complained of soreness all week.

"I can't do nothing but tell you to wait until Sunday. This bag is going to Dallas," said Portis, pointing at the equipment bag in front of his locker. "We have seen some miracle days happen. This ain't no situation for me not to be playing in."

As usual, Portis wavered from serious to playful, making it difficult to discern whether he really feels that he can play. At one point, he said: "I eat gunpowder twice a day now. As long as I'm on this gunpowder, I think I'm going to be all right."

Portis took a more serious tone when he expressed frustration over the week-to-week soap opera that his injury has become.

"I'll be happy when I'm healthy," Portis said. "Hopefully we can get this over with real soon and I can join my teammates and be on the field and it's not an issue. I don't like this being an issue going into the weekend. Am I up or down? Playing or not? Whatever's best for the team."

Portis wore pads and said he "ran a few routes" during practice, but that apparently wasn't enough for the coach.

"He'll probably tell me he can play on game day, but he didn't practice so we'll move him down accordingly," Gibbs said. "Hopefully he's going to be back next week, That would be my hope."

How about the quote from Gibbs that says they're downgrading him to DOUBTFUL, which is the most relevant piece of all of this? This story isn't TOO irresponsible.

Gibbs certainly is one to be vague, but he's not a guy to flat out say the opposite of the truth. Not his style.

If you're a Portis owner I'd pay very close attention to this and take it seriously, and not dismiss it as mere misdirection.

has FF gotten so big that reporters have to run to get a "scoop" and state things that just are based on speculation? or are they just not doing their due diligence?bad reporting IMO.

Didn't we go through this stuff last week? Portis saying he was not going to play. Gibbs saying he was going to play, Portis being "probable", Portis being "Questionable"...I would not rule out Portis yet, desite what reports say. I see Portis having another one of those games where he backs up Betts, comes in and scores a short TD..

For all of you people who drafted Portis in the first or second round... :wall:

Get used to this.. This could be the way the rest of the season goes..

Sounds to me like Gibbs isn't happy that Portis isn't practicing. And he's going to make his point by keeping Portis on the bench this week.

definitely possible, but if Portis says he could've played, and the Skins lose and fall to 0-2. there's gonna be some really upset people next week.

I'm not sure that that's a 100% firm conclusion to make unless the Skins listed Portis as OUT on the injury report.
espn outsides the lines just now reported Portis will not play this week.
I have no idea if Portis will or won't play. All I'm saying is if it's not on the Injury Report, it's not official. I've heard coaches use the "if they don't practice then they don't play" line before and they played. We'll have to see if the Skins come back with a revised statement that says either "yes, Portis is out," "he's a game time decision," "he'll be the backup," or whatever. There's still two days until game time, so I think this will get less cloudy before then.

One positive here is that the Redskins are traveling to Dallas tomorrow. If Portis doesn't make the trip there will be a report about that tomorrow.

Very :goodposting:You know I could not agree anymore with that. I am truly amazed this year how "out of control" the rumor mill has become. I can't even really read thorugh 80% of those threads. Getting true information is a challenge. And being able to have your own good sense and judgment is paramount in your fantasy success. I feel really bad for all the noob's trying to get a grasp of this game. YOu really need to know your football and have good insitincts and experinence wtching the game and understanding the injury report and how it has changed a ton over the last few years. Not saying this thing in particular is not true but man it is crazy this season how the reporters are marching out a ton of BS storys so they can pound their chest and say they got the scoop.

And go 0-2 in the process. they have no shot without him. Sorry that's a fact.
I seem to remember a game in 1987 when a Skins team full of scabs beat a Dallas team, in Dallas, with regulars such as Tony Dorsett, Danny White, and Randy White playing. I also seem to remember a game in 1989 when Dallas won in Washington for their only win that season.

If it was as simple as if he plays, they win, it would be a lot easier decision. I personally don't think the outcome of the game is going to hinge on whether or not Portis plays.

I think their chance of winning is greatly diminished if he does not. They have no threat of a good running game with Betts and Duckett. Dallas is no creampuff. It is a huge rivarly and Dallas will have their "A" game at home coming off a dissapointing loss. If I were a Skins fan I would be hoping Portis plays or the odd's of losing are huge. Other than Santana Moss name me another diffrence makeron the Skins. Seriously!Brunell needs a running game to be effective this week. The Cowboys are trotting out 2 playmakers in Owens and Jones (Jones can score from anywhere on the field). Big time players make big time plays in big games.

If Gibbs says Portis is OUT, then he's OUT. Gibbs isn't Shanahan. The guy says what he means.
When the injury report gets updated to "Out" then I will believe it. Because if he say's Portis is out and does not list it on the report, he does not mean it.

Bump Brunell up, since he'll have to pass the ball to move the ball against the Cowboys?

Or:

Bump Brunell down, since the Cowboys defense will be able to sit on the pass all day long w/ no Portis in the backfield?

:lose-lose:

Redskins | Portis will not play Week 2

Fri, 15 Sep 2006 12:48:33 -0700

ESPNews reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) will not play in Week 2.

If Gibbs says Portis is OUT, then he's OUT. Gibbs isn't Shanahan. The guy says what he means.
That's the issue--from what I've seen, he never used the word OUT. All he said was that if a guy doesn't practice than he's not going to play. But it doesn't say he won't suit up and be on the field. And someone else could get hurt and he might have to play. Or Gibbs could change his mind.I suspect we'll know more of what the reality is when Portis makes or does not make the trip to Dallas.

Clinton Portis was downgraded to doubtful with an injured shoulder after missing practice again Friday.

"A guy doesn't practice, he doesn't play," coach Joe Gibbs said. Gibbs mentioned Portis continued to feel soreness this week and said he could play Sunday, but Gibbs made the matter sound close. Look for Ladell Betts to start, with T.J. Duckett backing him up. Sep. 15 - 3:18 pm et

Thank you.As well as the injury report reading "out". Either way he is a risky start till this injury drama is behind him and it will be very soon. Because this is a disruption with the media constantly nagging Portis and Gibb's or whomever about this everyday.

Tell me about it. It is out of hand all the misinformation going out there about injuries. The teams are playing games and it sucks. It really just sucks.

I have got to think Betts is a must have now. This could last all year. Then again maybe Duckett is the must have???

I have to give FBG a  regarding the Portis situation. I thought the big Portis downgrade by Dodds and a number of other staff was a bit exteme but as I thought more about it I agreed. As a result I avoided him in several drafts. The season certainly isn't over by any stretch but this appears that it could be a nagging injury unless they shut him down.

Regardless of whether Portis gets into the game or not, his being this close to being declared out in addition to the opponent means Portis owners need to find another RB to start.

After listening to Bram Weinstein, beat reporter for the Skins for Danny Snyder's radio station, it's safe to say this is the maybe the most confusing situation in the history of history. Among Bram's throughts and speculation:

1) Portis is legit injured and played too much last week. Suspects he was running on adrenaline and should not have played as much as he did, if at all.

2) He reinjured himself last week in the same shoulder, but not in the same spot (consistent with the vague comments from Gibbs). This new injury has set him back to where he did not practice at all this week. He thinks the Skins may be worried for his season.

3) Portis may be partially in Gibbs's doghouse.

4) He tends to believe Gibbs here in that Portis will likely NOT play.

Take it for what its worth. I don't believe either side is telling the full truth, and I currently harbor much frustration with all parties involved. This is a cluster-eff.
