Portis will backup Betts Monday night (1 Viewer)

Wow! Good news for Portis owners!

Joe Gibbs says Clinton Portis will be used as a backup on Monday night.Ladell Betts will start over Portis, who seemed to rule himself out in statements made Friday. Portis told reporters he was "75 percent" earlier in the week, but now says he's at "93.9 percent" and could be fully healthy in two days. He should be a starter in Week 2 if he's physically ready.

Portis is just a wicked cool dude. First those crazy getups he wears when talking to the media, now he uses seemingly random, arbitrary numbers to describe how healthy he is.

Redskins | Portis upgraded to probable

Published Sat Sep 9 4:02:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Ryan O'Halloran, of The Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) missed practice Saturday, Sept. 9, and has been upgraded to probable for Week 1. Head coach Joe Gibbs said he would dress Monday, Sept. 11, and would play a backup role to RB Ladell Betts.

It's dumb because he's dressing for the game, going to be able to get some contact to see how his shoulder feels, and get in football shape? Yeah that's real dumb
If he isn't 100% healthy then they should wait until he is.
This is the NFL and nobody is 100% healthy even before their first game. Even practice will put a beating on these guys. But,,I completely agree with what you mean. If Portis can sit a game and it helps him from being a weekly question mark or put on the doubfu, questionable list then sit the guy vs MIN and put him in either next week vs DAL or the following week vs HOU.

93.9% healthy....how did he come up with that?
Clinton being Clinton. Where does Duckett factor into all of this?
I don't think Duckett is affected one way or the other. He's the short-yardage/goalline back in this game, with maybe a few other carries thrown in. Betts would be the starter in Portis' absence until Duckett learns the offense.
redman, what is your take on Portis playing and how much game time he gets?

A week ago I was optimistic about him playing, but that's changed as the week has gone on and it's clear that even his practices are very limited. He hasn't had contact in a month, and while they're working like mad to strengthen and tighten up that shoulder (a subluxation makes it "loose" in the joint), we just won't know what will happen until we see him lower his shoulder for the first time in a game. On the one hand, I have a feeling that they're not going to beat him up in practice just to test the shoulder. The first test will come in a game IMHO. That makes me wonder about whether they're trying to be sneaky about sliding him into Monday's game with significant work. Of interest, he's listed as Questionable rather than Doubtful. OTOH, the team certainly benefits by keeping the Vikings in doubt and forcing them to game plan for him. He has a unique combination of talents that nobody else on the roster has. The Vikings are a non-divisional game, and it's at home against a rookie head coach. Non-'Skins fans will scoff at this but the Redskins certainly are capable of winning this game with Betts and Duckett taking the carries and don't "need" Portis, although he certainly adds big play potential they don't have without him. A middle scenario might be to test the shoulder in this game by giving him limited work, perhaps starting him for the first series like in a preseason game and see how he holds up. Perhaps they could even select plays that have more limited potential for him to take a direct hit on the shoulder, such as a draw play or screen. But if he was none the worse for the wear, would they leave him in there or still pull him out as planned? The truth is that I personally would label him "doubtful" as a practical matter and would start your RB3 or flex WR over him if those other options are viable to you at all. We just don't know at this point as both Portis and the team have been masterful at saying everything and saying nothing. He seems "close" to returning to the lineup, but what that means for Monday's game remains to be seen. Sorry that I can't give something more definite.

My math had him pegged for 91% today! :D

I really don't know what to make of this. We done been bamboozled a lil' bit. At this point, he's either worse than 75% or 83% (by a wide margin) and this is just a decoy, or he's just about healed. Kudos to Gibbs and Co. for throwing me completely off.

As of today, I'm still sitting him.
You're not the only one scratching his head on this one. I think that means we take a step back from looking at the trees and hanging on every word that different people say to the media, and instead focus on the forest. To me, my horse sense says he's probably not going to play until they're sure he can take the beating, and I have a feeling the team will want to assure its fans that they're not rushing him back and so will assure the fans when the time comes that he's 100% before he takes the field. That hasn't happened this week.

Just a sign of the times. More and more coaches skirting the information distribution.

I have been optimistic about Portis being able to play in this game and I still think he could if the Skins really needed him. The season is 16+ games long from the Skins perspective though and I think they are being cautious with Portis because of this. If this was game 15 and a playoff slot still in question for example I think Portis would definitly play.

However this is game 1 and the Skins do seem to have thier attention on game 2 against the Cowgurls who is thier main rival for the division championship at this point. Giving themselves a better chance to win game 2 over game 1 is a higher priority for them I think.

I see the Skins starting Betts and seeing if they can be productive on offense against a improved Vikings defense that has not proven itself as improved in any games that matter yet.

I see 3 possible scenarios in regards to Portis playing time for the 1st game.

1. Skins offense effectivly moves the ball against the Vikings without Portis (most likely from Cooley matchup against Leber/Harrs being in Cooleys favor). Score is close or Skins have a lead and they rest Portis until late in the game giving Portis only one series to see how his injury effects him if at all or not playing Portis at all to not give the Cowgurls any fresh game film on him.

2. Skins offense struggles against improved Viking defense but they manage to not commit turnovers play sound defense and keep the score close. Portis could then be played more extensivly to give the offense a boost and help the Skins get a lead. Then once that is achieved they rest Portis again and try to hold thier lead with thier defense.

3. Skins offense struggles against improved Viking defense and/or commit turnovers. Skins are playing from behind and they play Portis in attempt to get a spark and catch up. Or they sacrifice the game and just focus on week 2 against the Cowgurls not giving them any game film on Portis to work with. I think if the Skins are behnd it is less likely for them to play Portis much in a attempt to catch up though as Betts should be fine in pass protection and they will be passing a lot more to catch up in that situation.

I am benching Portis for game one because he has not practiced enough for me to think he will play a significant ammount of plays for me to start him. Even though as I allready said I think he could play the whole game if we were at a later point in the season and post season aspirations were on the line.

I think he's good to go

If you have a better option start him - but I wouldn't start Ladell Betts. I am thinking they'll roll with Portis as the game wears on

well... give some props to the "injury insider" from ESPN who stuck to his guns and said Portis would be on the field on monday, even when things looked their bleakest

i was ready to sit Portis... but my RB3 will be sharing time too (Addai)... so i guess now i'm gonna wait and see what some of my guys (and my opponents') do tomorrow and make my decision before the Sunday Nighter... only problem w/ that is that i have Gates and Rivers going Monday night too... so i won't have that good of an idea of how many points i'll actually need to win

Actually .... this SUCKS .... do I go with my handcuff Betts or do I start my RB3 "Fragile Freddie" against a pretty stout Dallas D ? ..... Ggggrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!

:wall:

Wonder what kind of a start Betts would be ...
I thought Betts would be a good start vs Minny if Portis doesn't dress ... now with the chance he maybe, kinda could, might get a coupla ...yadda, yadda, yadda ... well this kinda crap just clouds the waters even more!Either play the game Clinton or take the night off!!

Washington Post article by Howard Bryant

A day after suggesting that he not only expected to miss tomorrow's season opener against Minnesota but wasn't even positive that he would be available for next Sunday's game at Dallas, Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis said yesterday he was "93.9 percent" healthy and hoped to play against the Vikings.

Further closing the gap between what had been his weeklong pessimism about being healthy enough to face the Vikings and the more optimistic view of the Redskins' coaches that Portis had been steadily improving, Portis was upgraded to probable on the injury report, and for the first time Coach Joe Gibbs said yesterday that Portis would be available tomorrow night as a backup to starter Ladell Betts.

"I think we've tried to accurately state exactly where he is," Gibbs said. "I think right now if I had to say I think Ladell will start and Clinton will play a backup role. I think that's the way it will go and that's what we've tried to accurately portray during the week."

The move represented a remarkable turnaround for Portis and underscored something of a disconnect between Portis's comments and those of the team over the past few days, where Portis and Gibbs characterized Portis's situation quite differently.

Portis has practiced the past few days but hasn't played since suffering a partial separation of his left shoulder on Aug. 13 during the first series of the Redskins' first preseason game. On Friday, Portis ruled himself out for the Minnesota game.

"The way things look, bro, we'll aim to probably see 2-6 against Dallas," said Portis, referring to himself by his jersey number, 26. "Who knows? Hopefully, I can come back against Dallas, but if not, I should be ready for Houston."

But yesterday, Portis was upbeat, funny, relaxed, speaking about himself in odd, incremental percentages. On Thursday, Portis said he was at 75 percent healthy. Friday he joked that he was up to 83 percent. Yesterday was 93.9. "We've got two more days to get a six percent increase. Right now, I'll get some good rest, and hopefully get up to 98 or 99 percent and be a game-time decision," he said, adding that he was aided by the game being played on Monday. "It helped me out a lot. To shoot for Sunday, being at 98.5, missing that 1.5 percent could have hurt me."

Portis's levity stood in stark contrast to the grim, smoldering Gibbs, who has stated multiple times over the last 10 days that tomorrow's game is one of "the most important" that he's "ever been a part of" and is acutely aware that Portis's status was a topic of high interest.

"I've tried to accurately portray during the week exactly where it would be," Gibbs said. "I think he's practiced this week and we tried to tell everyone what we thought it would be."

Bubba Tyer, the Redskins' director of sports medicine, said Friday that when Portis plays he would wear a shoulder harness that would keep his shoulder stabilized. "We haven't had a lot of physical contact since I've been trying to go, basically being in the right place, doing the right things, and getting your timing down, just in case," Portis said yesterday.

By the end of the afternoon, Portis walked to his car and said, "After my shower, I now feel like I'm at 96.1 percent."

Redskins Note: Defensive end Renaldo Wynn (sprained ankle) was downgraded to doubtful for tomorrow's game.
It's not often I disagree with Redman, but I think Portis will play the majority of the snaps at RB in this game. Had the preseason gone better I wouldn't say that. But I think the Skins actually lost some confidence in themselves during the preseason and know they weren't playing well, and they don't want to begin the season with a loss in a game they "should" win. And even if they're not playing well, having their best player on the field may help them win ugly. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe I'm missing something but correct me if I'm wrong. Portis has not had any contact since he hurt his shoulder, correct? THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY HE IS PLAYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No coach, in his right mind, is going to risk his premier back playing him in a game before he has tested his shoulder out. It is just not going to happen. All these BS quotes about him not playing till week 2, maybe, then the next day he's 93.9% ready, is all talk. You would think we were talking about the Patriots the way they are throwing out this crap. :wall:

Disclaimer:

If, by some miracle, Portis plays, nobody is allowed to flame me.

take into consideration that Portis knows exactly what this injury is like... to an even worse degree... he came back from a DISLOCATION (not partial) on his other arm back in HS.... he's not in uncharted waters."insider reports" had Portis sure of his availablity days ago... w/ how silly he's being w/ this whole thing... it's seems more probable to me that he's known he was gonna play for awhile and him and Gibbs are just playing head games w/ the opposing coaching staffand he's already said that he won't come back and play in a limited role... he's gonna be 100% when he hits that field... and w/ only 6.1 percet to go w/ a good 48 hours yet to rest....i'm puttin him in :football:

Why is this game so significant to Gibbs?

I understand your reasoning fatness but I have not read these other comments by Gibbs over the week backing up this statement "Gibbs, who has stated multiple times over the last 10 days that tomorrow's game is one of "the most important" that he's "ever been a part of" "

I have now come to the point of double think. Until Portis statement Friday that he would be out I was leaning towards him playing. And that the Skins may struggle against the Vikings without him. Then my opinion changed when Portis said he would be out. Now I find my head spinning and I have no idea what will actualy happen.

I definitly would like to start Portis over any other option I have as long as I thought he would get 15 or more carries. When assesing possible outcomes above I only saw 1 out of 3 scenarios that he likely would. But I may be wrong about how important this game is to Gibbs and that was a big part of how I looked at those 3 scenarios.

ETA- I may subconsciously wearing purple glasses when it comes to Portis playing. As it would certainly help the Vikings.

If he wasn't on my roster, this would be pretty funny.

he TRIED eh?sounds like the same B-S i used to tell my GF when i disappointed her some how...

"Yea... i TRIED to find something you'd like for your birthday"

it's BS... he's lying

so Portis is either MORE hurt then what he's reported... or less... i'm confidently assuming the latter... due in part to Clinton's cutesy media flirting w/ the decimals and percentages and stuff

he's ready

Gibbs has said that frequently over his career about upcoming games. He gets wound up tight as hell before games. Taken by itself I don't think that statement would mean much. But added to the way the Redskins have played in the preseason (badly) and the disappointment Gibbs had expressed about it during the preseason, I think it's a big game for them. Who wants to go into Dallas after a loss?By the way, the video interview with Portis is viewable on Redskin.com now. It's near the top right under Redskin TV, called "Portis 9/9". Link

Watched the video. One of the reporters asked if he would be at 100% come game time. He said "At the rate things have been increasing - looks pretty good" at about 1:00 of the video. He looks upbeat and in a very happy moodHe's good to go.

 Clinton Portis = SOD, no doubt, especially for thos who got him in the 2nd roundUsually we're forced to search for value in drafts and take chances on guys who may lead your team to a championship later in drafts (i.e. Larry Johnson in 2005, Cedric Benson this year) but when it's handed to you on a platter, you have to feel very fortunate.

Could it be that they'll start Betts and only play Portis if Betts is ineffective?

No way I'm starting him this week, even if I have to start Wali Lundy instead. If Portis can prove to me that he's healthy, then he will make it into my starting lineup but not before. Going on heresay and maybes never won a championship in my experience. Always go for the sure thing.

Unfortunately my other best option is Chris Brown and Jeff Fisher is playing these same games.

God I hate ff sometimes. I dont own Portis or Betts but now you cant start either of them. Sickening. Oh well I got Steve Smith problems.

I'm starting him. It plays out like this for me:

I can start Rhodes vs. Giants, Lundy vs. Philly, Bush vs. Browns. Everyone of those guys will split carries regardless. If Portis plays and splits carries, he's still light years ahead of the rest of my weak RBs.

If he doesn't play and I get a big goose egg from my RB1, I'll be in position to be first in the waiver wire order following this weeks games and have the opponrtunity to pick up whatever backup may step into an injury opening.

Always the optimist. Particularly when I have no other choice.

I'm starting Portis. Who's with me?
