Preseason Game Observations (2 Viewers)

I think Jon Gruden just complimented a guy as giving every ounce of what they have just as the guy jogged to finish the play.
Gruden is the best color commentator ever. I just love watching the games to here him say stuff that makes me literally stop my entire thought pattern to just burst out laughing and scream "WHAT?!"

I'm numbed to him since he thinks every player in the league is top 10 at his position. Plus Gruden the coach >>>> Gruden the commetator

Lets stop quoting Keno numbers and get back to something interesting.
yeah like rice should easily be in the talk for 1 overall. I can see him finishing way above adp because of his catches
Pretty much every back in the first round has a valid argument for #1 overall. I was taking Rice over Peterson (2 weeks ago) before I started taking Mccoy over Peterson (1 week ago.) I think Rice is the safest back in the first round - mostly because of how consistent he is in the PPR format.
What about non PPR?
I personally wouldn't take Rice over Peterson #1 overall in standard. I could see an argument for Mccoy, Richardson, Lynch, Martin, Charles, Spiller and Morris though.Do people still play standard these days?
70 year olds with pen/paper and dial up do
Why is PPR better? The current NFL already had shifted the rules and style of play to favor pass catchers. Why do they need ever further compensation?

Marlon Brown is probably the guy I'm most intrigued by. I've mentioned it before, I don't think Torrey Smith can run all the patterns that some people are predicting. I know I'm in the minority, but he just hasn't shown that ability. I'm always on the lookout of guys that can potentially steal that #1 WR spot on a team. Brown seems to fit that bill so far.

For you Raven homers, has he been practicing with the 1st team offense?

He is like the 5th WR on their depth chart, not sure there is much to look out for, at least this year.

I've been on the Charles @ 1.01 wagon since like May. I'm not shifting that opinion and haven't as I've drafted him in three different leagues so far. Albeit none where I have 1.01. I've gotten him at 1.03, 1.08 and 1.05. In my most recent one I really did think about it being possible that McCoy is the better pick. But I'll stick with my gut on Charles. I think he's being severely underestimated in terms of his scoring production. People keep seeing his single digit TDs and seem to ignore that his past production was with Romeo Crennel and Matt Cassel running the show. Big big difference now. He may not have 20 TDs like McCoy but I think 15 is perfectly reasonable to assume.
JC's most TDs in a season is 8, but its perfectly reasonable to assume he gets 15 this year. Interesting.

tsmith still will not be targeted a lot even though boldin is not in town.....?
It doesn't matter who is playing besides him, he's a home run threat and nothing else. People here like to fight for some reason why he's not, but they're wrong. He's great in best ball formats, terrible on your fantasy roster. He will scored 2 TD's in one game then the following week catch 1 pass for 5 yards. AVOID!
it's looking like this.
He hasn't even been taking snaps...
Tonight? Why wouldnt he have been?

You could make an argument for anyone. No other RB has the cosistently elite track record that Peterson has. And yes, people still play standard.
why?
Why play PPR? How is that better?
because you get credit for yards
You'll have to unpack this for me.
I dont think pantherfanatic understands that there is a difference between TD only and non-PPR

Ya, because he came in undrafted this season.

He's shown enough this preseason to be no worse than #3, and I wouldnt be shocked to see him as their #2... he doesnt have much to beat to get there, they're corps is weak.

Flacco seems to trust the kid and he's looked damn good.

If you have bench depth, Id add him in a heartbeat

Im a ####. I was obviously talking about his rushing stats you festering clam.
Do you play in a dumb format where receiving yards are somehow worth less than rushing yards?
Nope, but since I understand real football in conjunction with the Dungeons and Dragons version, I draw hesitation based on the fact that a team's RUNNING BACK had 4 instances where he had less than 14 carries.

And in doing so and applying that to how the offense now looks without 2 of its top 3 receiving options from the year prior, I have further cause for concern for the CURRENT SEASON.

But go back to rolling your 100-sided dice, and don't mind me. :penguinscreech:
Im surprised no one laid this out for you, but in these 4 games where Rice didnt have as many carries (even though you are ignoring his receiving production) that you continue to harp on, there were perfectly good reasons. Lets look at these 4 games:

9 carries - a 43-13 loss to HOU. Hard to run the ball when you are down 29-3 at halftime.

13 carries - a 55-20 BAL win. On the opposite side of the spectrum, when you are crushing your opposition, no need to risk injury to your stud RB.

12 carries - a 23-20 loss to PIT. Damn only 12 carries? Well yeah, but he still had 78yds rushing and a TD. This game is really the only outlier.

12 carries - losing 17-0 to DEN at halftime, losing 31-3 after 3rd quarter. See HOU game, you cant waste time running when youre losing by 4 TDs

Sometimes you need to look at a little more than how many carries/touches a player got, or at least pay more attention to what matters - the Yards and TDs, instead of using some arbitrary number as your "carries cutoff" to support some dumb argument on a player.

Despite the 40-9 loss to the Lions, Tebow didn't play at all tonight for the Patriots. He still had one more passing yard than he did last week.

There was probably a reason this guy wasnt drafted, right? Im looking at his college stats, and he literally only had 4 good games over a 2 year period, and theyll were all against the SEC bottom feeders like Vandy and Mizzou.

I understand in the past some UDFA's have hit, just seems you are getting a little too excited with this guy. Maybe he's worth a last round pick just to see if he shows up week 1 (or week 2 if he's still on your roster), but thats all Im buying right now.

ETA: You said he's shown enough in the preseason to be no worse than their WR3, yet before tonight he only had 2/31 in 2 games where Im guessing he was a guy who saw a good amount of snaps.

Well, that's what Im advocating... a last rnd pick, a flier...

he is 6/90/1 this preseason - decentr numbers, honestly... The real reason he is of any relevance is because BAL has such an atrocious WR corps

I grabbed him.. why the hell not?

eta: his stats prior to tonight are hard to put into context as Flacco barely played in the previous games.

Game 1 - Taylor was QB and got his 2 completions from him

Game 2 - dont even know if he played or not, but no stats

Game 3- played w Flacco and looked great

On topic:

Still not thrilled about Deangello Williams, even if he is your RB5.

He had a couple of above average plays last week and this week he looks pretty much like the same old DWill.
BAL was getting penetration on every single run play but I must admit DWill looked almost tentative to run forward. I was more excited about him as a RB4 prospect before this game. Regardless as to whether or not he can still be productive, it will all be moot if the Oline gets man handled like that on a weekly basis. It was tough to watch.

joique bell

if you dont got him, go get him

he's so for real in that offense
I didn't catch the game (watching the replay right now) and am excited to see this guy run. He looked good last year and would normally come in towards the end of the game to work tired defenses. Here's rotoworld's take..

Lions RB Joique Bell rushed five times for 52 yards and caught two passes for 49 yards in Thursday night's third preseason game versus New England.
Bell runs hard downhill, has some lateral agility, and really excels in the passing game. He played ahead of Mikel Leshoure against the Patriots and is Reggie Bush's clear handcuff. Through three preseason contests, Bell has 12 carries for 78 yards (6.50 YPC) and seven receptions for 91 yards. Because Bush has often struggled to stay healthy and the Lions run a high-octane offense, Bell should be drafted in all leagues. At worst, he's a solid RB4.

Brown certainly didn't live up to the hype in college, but he was a 5 star recruit. That doesn't mean much but when he's in an ideal spot to win a #2 job I think he's worth rostering. Most UDFA's don't have his opportunity. Worse case is you drop him if someone else wins the #2 job but right now it's wide open.

Brown looked good tonight but keep in mind Jones was targetted early and played well for the short time he was in. Jones also was wide open like Brown.

Agreed, and Stokely or Mellette could still be the #2. It's a crowded field.
Mellette pissed off the coaches for loafing during practice prior to them bringing in Stokely. I think Mellette has potential (which is why I was paying attention) but he is not seizing that opportunity. I kind of hoped it was just the coaches using the media to motivate him, but it does not look like that has had an effect.

There is plenty of opportunity here. Stokely seems the surest bet.

Stokley is definitely the safest bet, much like Edelman was the safest best in NE several weeks ago.

After a good catch over the middle in last night's game, Harbaugh was grinning ear to ear at Stokley as he was returning to the sidelines. No need to read too much into it, but I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh feels like he's found adequate Bolden replacement.

Brown also looked good last night. He struck me as the kind of guy that could take over a game.

For FF purposes, Stokley is going to be a low ceiling guy and might have a shot at putting up WR5 numbers in Baltimore. Brown is a bigger gamble, but if he wins the #2 WR spot, he looks talented enough for low-end WR3 numbers.

Downgrade all offensive panthers. I may even reconsider Dwill even if he is there in the 10th or 11th. The offense and line in particular has some major issues that I dont see getting ironed out before the season. Cam still looks like he is going to get his 700 yards rushing though so factor that in

the Defense looks top5 with #1 potential. The pass rush is making things easy for the lb's and corners. Plus Ginn looked really fast on ST.

Thoughts/questions to others on the night:

-The D-line for Detroit is nasty but can the secondary hold up to support it? The front looks awesome but their corners were whipped.

-Will there be any fantasy relevance to the Carolina running game this year? I always thought DWIL was pretty good but he has either died in the offseason or that line is as bad as Pittsburgh's.

-Why is Olsen blocking so much? New scheme or necessity?

-Brandon Stokley has every bt a chance as being the #2 WR on the Ravens as anybody else right now (from a FF ppr reference).

-Luke Kuechly is the nastiest thing I have seen in a LONG time. We all knew he was the new MLB to have but he might be a JJ Watt difference making LB, relative to other LBs. If he maintains his health, I don't see how its possible in that scheme for him to have less than 12 points a week, just by default.

-Reggie Bush. Ok, should we temper this ppr love for him because Calvin isn't out there or do we just resign to the fact that our RB is now basically a WR and is that a good thing?

-I'm not willing to annoint anyone in New England yet. Those fumbles put Sudfeld, Vareen, and Bolden on the bench and I think they just picked and picked and picked at that terrible Detroit secondary.

Am I the only person who finds it ironic that someone referring to themselves as a fan of Walter Payton is insulting football fans who are actually old enough to have been able to appreciate sweetness first hand? And doing so in reference to puffing up clearly inferior players just because of a broken scoring system that does not reflect a players true ability compared to their peers?

PPR has made you all sound not so smart when you talk about football.

Yes, you're young and hip for playing ppr.

But get your facts straight - it's parchment not paper that non-ppr players use to tally up their scores.

Don't know what that has to do with it. Even my USA today tracked receptions.

I don't know why there has to be an argument about PPR vs Standard. I enjoy both. As I am sure many people do. Such insults being hurled over this. LOL

I love Mickie Shula as a college QB....but it ends there. He's been the OC of my NFL team and the HC of my college, and both ended poorly...with bad offenses as the exclamation point. He's scared me off here.

This. Seriously guys?

I'm sick and tired of getting into any kind of hobby or interest only to have people #####ing and fighting over their e-**** size because of tiny little variances in choices. Not everybody enjoys the exact same thing or chooses the exact same thing. Get over it.

Its my fault, I was needling a moron that seems to frequent specifically this thread alone and does nothing but rail on people. I realize standard still has an active following, if you take offense to my opinions about your scoring format - I'm sorry. But I really do think your scoring system is awful, I don't by any means think PPR is perfect but atm it is the better format, in my opinion.

Sorry to everyone else for further derailing this thread with this comment, it started as an innocent snarky comment to a guy that was clearly talking out of his ### on multiple topics.

Well I'm sure that'll be the last word on the subject.

Looks like Olsen will be utilized after all ;) .

Cobb will not play this game again, I have no idea how his adp can still be around 8, but maybe they're onto something, or just wishful thinking.

What to watch for tonight:

GB v. SEA--lacey and finley for me. It looks like Cobb's injury will hobble him all year and Finley stands to benefit since he and J.Jones are the only healthy wrs so far.

CHI v OAK-- I'd like to see if they finally involve Forte in the passing game, which we know they will in the regular season. OAK-- I will probably just keep track of the targets for the wrs. One of these guys should emerge as a number 3 wr for fantasy purpose. Ausberry(sp)/Butler/Moore all had 3 targets each with Flynn at qb last week.
