Have a question for you SSD guys. I have a Lenovo thinkpad that's 4 years old. It's starting to slow down a bit. Looking on ebay, I think I can get $150ish for it. I basically use it for web browsing and microsoft office stuff.

Would it be worth while dropping $200 on a SSD, or just selling this computer and getting a new one for $800ish?

Will the SSD make that big of a difference?
I put this one in my wife's laptop that is about 4 years old. Made a huge difference in performance. 120 GB is small in today's standards but I wiped her old hard drive and turned it into a nice little external hard drive that she only uses to store files. There are slim, cheap cases it will fit into with a usb cable. Just plug it in and you have your extra 500 GB, or whatever.

Course they sell 250GB -1TB SSDs as well.

Used just for web browsing and office.. you'll see a big difference. Everything will launch faster.
Yep. I have a 5yr old Macbook pro that I dropped a 240GB SSD into it, and its snappy as hell.... and i'm a power user with 4 screens active (Windows XP virtual system, Outlook, Web Browser, then "work screen" (photoshop/illustrator/dreamweaver/office/etc)... I work on huge 1-2GB photoshop files, stream music, run a shell of WIndows, and more... all without a hiccup on a 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and only 6GB of DD3 RAM.

If I was buying a SSD today I'd target the Samsung EVO line of drives, which seem to rate the best of any brand going right now. Plus they've very affordable ($180 for 500GB all day on eBay)

Starting to rethink the shave secret.

1. Yes, it is a noticeably closer shave, but the improvement I got switching from my Mach 3 to the Shick! Hydro 5 with electric vibrating goodness was a more noticeable improvement. Plus I'm not convinced that the oil doesn't give a false sense of closeness.

2. I think it might clog my blades fast, and that's going to be a deal breaker for me.

Anyone else have this clogging issue with the Shave Secret?

Oh yeah, the Shick! is the schnizzle. I believe in that product.
I have a clogging issue with SS. I used the product twice and shelved it. I somehow cut myself on both shaves too, which I rarely ever do. Based on the unanimously awesome reviews here, I chalked it up to my own user error and moved on.
Not really seeing this one either. Getting just as much irritation as I do without using a shave oil. May have to go back to expensive Truefitt Shave Oil, Will up the amount and see how it goes.

I do use a double edge shave with Feather blades. If you grow a thick beard and shave each day, like I do, Feather really cuts that #### down.
Second that on the feathers. I use porarso and the feathers in a Merkur 34c. So sick of buying Mach 5's.

I have some new cream on the way so we shall see how that goes.

things this thread is bad at:

wallets (I have a minimalist wallet as good as any of the ones listed..it cost $16 and lasted 3 years. I got others as gifts and they aren't as good).

shoes (crocs? clarks? really?)

coolers/koozies--koozies should be free promotional items that walk off your boat with someone's beer and you don't care. if you need something to keep one beer cold for over an hour, you really should consider just not drinking.
The Yeti cooler is a pretty fantastic product. I thought that's what the thread was about? at a bunch of FBG's scoffing at the price.

For me, the "problem" I have with the koozie is I just don't need a beer to stay cold for more than 30-60 minutes; and why spend huge money for something I might be pissed off about losing when I would not be pissed off about losing a $1.99 koozie (if I even used one)?

I bought a $7 pen because I always lose pens and got sick of not caring.

Completely understand...but it's a "nice to have"...especially as a gift...and if you drink nice craft been in a hot, humid environment; it can be beneficial.

I wouldn't mind one as a gift

You live in Massachusetts. Nothing wrong with that.. I lived there two back in the day. When the summer peaks out at 85 and you don't really get the intense sun you find in the southern US.. you don't NEED a fancy koozie for your beer to stay at a drinkable temp for 30-60 mins.

In the southern half of the US, your beer is piss warm within 20-30 minutes in a normal koozie. If you happen to spend much time by the pool, or out on a lake.... and you're not inhaling natural light all day, this makes a bit more sense. Still a luxury purchase... but not a crazy one. We're talking about $30 here fellas... don't be afraid to live a little.

My biggest misunderstanding of this koozie deal is: y'all take more than 30 minutes to down a beer? ;)

A tub of TOBs lavender just came in. I think I agree.

it takes me 46.7 minutes to drink a miller lite. The yeti koozie will make the last sip just as cold as the first :banned:
miller lite has so little booze in it that if you took that long to drink it you would actually never get a buzz on bromigo the first sip would be out of your system by the ttime you took the last i guess thanks for supporting milwaukee tho bromigo take that to the bank

Rubbermaid garage track system. I have all kinds of crap hanging from that thing. A bit pricey at roughly $10 a hook but I am so meh more organized now.

Do not recommend - gladiator cabinets. At least the one I purchased is not that solid. 72" tall by 48" wide. The shelves can only support 50# each.

In the cart to purchase and will review if anyone cares;

Myq garage door opener - wifi

New router of some kind

Looking for wireless wifi light switches.

Keyport Key Chain - A bit of a pain to get the actual keys made (you have to go to an actual locksmith not Lowes etc) but once you do these things are great.

Tommy John Underwear - I use to be a huge believer in the exofficio brand but after a year of those and switching over to the TJ's for a year it's not even close. TJ's are the greatest underwear ever

I endorse the Rubbermaids as well

The signal that my wifi router (comcast) puts out is terrible. It doesn't reach the other side of my house. Any recommendations?
Check with the comcast website to see if they "Recommend" any routers/modems. I did this with cox and get a good signal.

The actual wifi signal may be dependant upon location in your house. You want it as central as possible to the areas where you will be using the signal.

We did a thread on these digital pad locks before, but they've really come in handy for me. So convenient.

what's the install like on these?
In my experience, it's not much different than a regular door lock. Just have to make sure you have the clearance for the keypad. We had a door that the hole in the door was drilled really close to the side causing the lock to be really close to the door jam and the one we bought wouldn't fit.

what happens if the batteries die and you don't have your key? I mean, the reason you'd use this is to not have to carry a key, right?

Installation is simple. I've put 5 in (different houses) over the years and never had an issue. 15-30 min job. The batteries last for years, but there is a warning system to let you know the batteries are low (audio and visual). It is also key accessible.

They have warning systems on them....if you ignore them and don't have a key, I guess you need to break a window? I don't know how long the batteries are to last, but mine are going two years strong right now.

If I locked my door, I'd certainly buy one of them. Do they make one that opens using a key fob as well? I'd prefer the convenience of a key fob with the option to key a code in case you didn't have the fob with you or to give out temporary codes to others.

My dog is a chewer. She chews through anything you can throw at her. This includes those little black K9 Kongs and chew tire things.

This has been around for a year now and not a dent. https://www.westpawdesign.com/dogs/dog-toys/zogoflex-dog-toys/hurley-dog-bone

Also K9 ballistics dog beds as she has chews every one too shreds except this one.
blackdot

Mine destroys every toy you put in front of her.
Same. I'm getting one for sure

Agree about safety razor, so tired of paying for. Mach 5. invested in a merkur and love the shave I get.

There are versions available from kwikset that connect to wifi and allow you to open them from a smartphone.

Would be cool if it could use nfc to lock/unlock.
