Q about Detroit WRs (1 Viewer)

We all know the end result with Charles Rogers and Mike Williams being in Oakland.

I remember ALOT of people praising Mike and Charles when they were in their first camp with the Lions and the rosy expectations for them in their first season.

If ya don't mind, tell me why Calvin Johnson is different.

yeah it's been coverred months ago but every draft pick is their franchise's savior then. There's a real different vibe about rooks now than in April.

I don't remember any hype surrounding BMW. I think most were concerned about his shape due to repeated visits to the Hamburglar's house during his year off.

I don't recall anyone saying anything about Rogers'/BMW's poor character or work ethic at this point in their careers. They were very highly regarded until they actually started playing football in the NFL. I see little difference at this point in time. I think Johnson will be a stud, but I thought that about the other 2 as well. Time will tell. The fact that Johnson has already slowed down his progression is a bit of a red flag. Funny how we ignore things like that early in players' careers though.

BINGO . . . as for CJ, people ARE PRAISING his work ethic, and there was a lack of praise of work ethic for Lions and Rogers . . .

I agree with your last part, I don't consider it a big red flag, but something to keep an eye on.You're wrong about BMW's work ethic not being questioned though, and Rogers had character issues at MSU.

I don't see where Calvin has "slowed down his progression" at all. If you are referring to him hitting the wall, that is to be expected. First, Martz runs his WRs hard, plus, Calvin missed the first week of camp. There is nothing at all surprising about him losing his legs. It is a complete non issue. As for the difference between Calvin and Rogers/Williams, the big difference is there is not one red flag about Calvin, while there were several about the other two.

BMW was taking a lot of heat at this point for being oveweight and lazy. I still contend if Rogers did not suffer consecutive injuries, he would have been a damn fine NFL WR. He caught 2 TDs in hist debut and was on pace for about 700 yards and 9 Tds his rookie year. The injuries just gave him too much time away from the structured world of football and he let himself go.

Calvin has not been accused of being lazy or out of shape, so if he can avoid injuries, he should prove different.

Yeah, Williams and Rogers weren't known for their work ethic, like CJ is.

Being a Lions fan, I've followed the WR thing a good bit. When Rogers came out of college, I was very happy with the pick. He had the skills to be a top WR in the NFL. He even started his rookie season with a bang, but then got injured. From then on, it was downhill. We all know the story.

As for Mike Williams. Well, at first I was kinda happy with the pick, as I thought Williams also had some great skills. But his size, lack of work ethic, and the fact that he sat out a year had me worried. And well, we know the end result of that. If he can hack it in Oakland, then more power to him. Good luck! I'm just glad to have turned the page on that one, too...

Back to CJ. I live outside Atlanta. I got to watch him a number of times. This kid is amazing to watch. He is in the perfect situation, too in Detroit. He has a stud WR ahead of him (ROY) who will demand a lot of attention, which will help free him up. He has a QB, who isn't the best in the NFL, but still has some in the tank and threw for 4000+ yards last season on a horrible team. He has some decent RBs that will help keep some LBs honest, and make safeties second guess some. He has another WR with him (Fuerry) who came out of nowhere and did extremely well, and will also help to spread the field. Also, he has an OC (Martz) that is dedicated to making it work, and spreading the ball a lot. We are going to see the field stretched a ton, and there will be a lot of 1v1s with CJ, and with his skills, height, etc. he's going to beat a lot of folks. Finally, their defense is still a work-in-progress, so opposing teams will still score a fair amount of points on them, forcing them to air it up more...
