QB Aaron Rodgers, PIT (3 Viewers)

Rodgers winning a super bowl in Pittsburgh this year would be a great story. Rodgers beat Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl the last time GB and Pittsburgh made it to the big dance. Even better if GB is the foe.

Very unlikely, but it would be a great story.

I have a feeling folks are going to be disappointed with the lack of fireworks from Rodgers and Pittsburgh. I expect Tomlin to capture another winning season and then an early exit from the playoffs by the Steelers. Rodgers should have a solid season.

I’ll check in later when this thread gets back to being more about football.
Kinda tough to gauge what’s going to happen with Rodgers in Pittsburgh after 3 days in shorts.
Here in Minnesota people aren’t allowed to wear shorts, because all the white legs are a danger to drivers. I always wear sunglasses when driving for this very reason.

No idea why the Steelers declined to even take a 4th-round flier on Shedeur but are pinning their hopes on a washed Rodgers. But I guess they know better than I do.
Reportedly the interviews did not go well and even if they had drafted him they would still have pursued Rodgers for this season anyway
Some interesting reports from here in CLE. He just got a second speeding ticket; this one in excess of 100 mph. Mostly, I dismiss this as "young & dumb" as we all were at some point. The fact that it's the second one concerns me a little. In camp, they say he's shown good throwing skills -- right touch & accuracy. They also say he's leaning standard NFL QB stuff like calling plays & adjusting blocking schemes, a bit of a learning curve there. I've heard proponents trash the coach/FO for "stubbornness" despite having no real inside knowledge, which drives me nuts. From what I can tell, they are duplicating the reps, side by side, so they can get lots for everyone. So far, it looks like he has some skills, but also has the farthest to go. I'm as certain as I can be that this stuff will sort itself out during training camp.

Just curious what is the most (2026 draft picks) anyone would give for Rodgers in a SF Dynasty league, knowing this is his last year?

Before my rookie draft started (and before Rodgers actually signed), I offered a 3rd round pick (2025) and it was accepted. I was/am deperate with a QB room of Flacco, Cousins and Richardson.
I think a 3rd is fair enough; but I'd recommend owners just hold him as I think that's pretty much the floor of his value in SF outside the chance he gets injured. Whereas I think there are lots of scenarios where you can get more than a 3rd for him during the season when an owner loses one of their QBs to injury and/or if he's putting up high end QB2 numbers with the Steelers. I don't think you're ever getting a 1st or anything crazy, but I'd rather maximize value on him and just keep him on my roster potentially helping my team in the meantime.

While I wouldn't right now, I'd gladly pay someone a 2nd+ for a QB scoring week to week in the top 18 in a SF league that could help me win a ship if the need arises.

Sheesh
The god of Cheesehead Nation was isolated and dismissive,” Smith writes, regarding Rodgers's demeanor during a player meeting. “He sat in the back row of the meeting room, issuing loud sighs before standing for a dramatic exit. An incredible quarterback, to be sure, but an even more impressive antagonist.”

Smith also says this about Rodgers: “In August 2021, my phone chirped with a text from Aaron Rodgers. ‘Can you call me?’ it read. Could I not run into traffic instead?”

lol - that’s rough, but collective bargaining isn’t for everyone. Still an interesting anecdote. Doesn’t really speak to who he is on the field, but for someone his age it’s a little immature behavior if true.

Mark Kaboly Camp Report

Aaron Rodgers: Rodgers is the unquestioned No. 1. The only question with him is if he can stay healthy for a 17-game season at 41 years old. He has shown no signs that it will be a problem. Now, he’s slowly ramping up where he needs to be for the Sept. 7 opener, but his intangibles are off the chart – snap cadence, play clock manipulation, reading defenses. His arm looks strong, and his mobility has been pleasantly good.

I said this in the Steelers thread but think it's interesting.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before.

Strength of schedule AND timing of the teams is something I think is underlooked.

From Bleacher Report:

Pittsburgh will only play one playoff team from the previous campaign in its first six games, which gives the veteran quarterback plenty of adjustment time with his new teammates.

What a jerk... ;)

And I'm sure there will be a way to spin this negative. But thought it was interesting.

Aaron Rodgers Rejected Steelers Offer to Pay Him More Money: ‘I Just Wanna Play Ball’

Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden revealed on 93.7 The Fan that Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers rejected the team’s offer to pay him more money. The four-time NFL MVP wasn’t kidding when he told The Pat McAfee Show he would play for “$10Ms”.

Rodgers actually got $13.65 million from the Steelers that includes up to $19.5 million with incentives, but the point stands, it’s not about the money for him.

“It wasn’t about money because they are giving him around $13 million or something like that. And I got word that he actually could have gotten more, but that’s what he wanted,” McFadden said. “They were willing to offer more. They were willing to pay him more than what he’s actually receiving, but Aaron was like, ‘No man, this is what I would take and I just wanna play ball.”

And more on what I suspected was at play.

It was a mutual respect between two OGs.

“A big attraction was Mike Tomlin,” he said. “I’ve gone against him over the years. … The last Sunday that I called him was some of the coolest conversations I’ve had in the game. Definitely with a head coach. He’s a big reason I’m here. I believe in him and I’m excited to play for him.”

I gotta tell ya that I think he sort of is. We knew when he left money on the table in NY that greed wasn’t his bugaboo.

I’ve changed my mind a little on Rodgers after watching the Netflix Enigma show about him.

I still think he can come off a little dooshy, but I’ve never had to deal with what he’s had to deal with. I think he hurts himself with how he handles the media.

At heart, I think he’s probably a decent dude who is smart, but not as smart as he thinks. He also seems like more of an introvert, which would make it hard to deal with the media and constant scrutiny.

I’m rooting for him to succeed this year.

Marshawn Lynch on Aaron Rodgers' leadership.

Obviously, he's a few years past his prime and MVP season of 2021.

But thought this was interesting.

Tom Brady says Aaron Rodgers is the most talented QB in NFL history.

"Aaron in his prime, to me, is the greatest passer of the football the league has ever seen. He could get the ball from point A to B faster and more accurate than any player in the history of the NFL."

I've used that quote often to get blind haters to quiet down a bit. doesn't work on the Rodgers haters that also hate Brady, but those people can go babble in a corner because nothing will make them happy.

I honestly thought that in his prime he was better than Brady. I could be wrong but that playoff game against Dallas where Crosby was hitting fifty-five yarders and the score was like 38-35 (?) was the most insanely quarterbacked game I'd ever seen. Rodgers was hitting guys on a rope like forty yards down the field. I haven't ever seen anything like that before or since.

Highlight of the sick throw I’m talking about at 10:18

Just watched episode one of his Netflix Enigma doc. I've always liked Rodgers. Whenever I watch these docs i always stat surf on my phone. My goodness. Id forgotten how many amazing seasons he had. Episode 1 was good, I'll keep watching.

Just finished the 3 episode Enigma. No one can question his remarkable football ability. Haters gonna hate, but I found him a genuine guy. My favorite part of the show was the short clip with Favre. That was the time for Favre to be like, "You know I didn't handle that well, but im a competitor and wanted to just crush this kid from California. My bad." Instead Favre is like. We were friends and things went good. We golfed. I had him at the house. Blah blah blah. Rodgers is like ya sure buddy. Ha ha. Favre just came off as fake. Solid watch obviously from Rodgers perspective. I'll say whatever opinion I had of him, I liked him a bit more after. Craziest stat about him is his TD to int ratio. Just remarkable numbers:

Aaron Rodgers
503 tds and 116 ints

Brett Favre
508 tds and 336 ints

Dan Marino
420 tds and 252 ints

One more thing.

The qb cadence segments was interesting. During the COVID no fans games, I had no idea that was an advantage. I guess he led in free play snaps. Just found thar interesting.

This thread topic was started in 2014 but the title was changed a while back to just be the generic A Rodgers thread. Initially, the title was OP suggesting Rodgers should be considered the best QB in NFL history. Its now 111+ pages long but if someone were to review the first 50 pages or so I think the consensus was that's a reasonable position to take. He was arguably the best ever over 10 years ago and is still playing.

I hate to say it because I don’t consider myself reductive like this but it’s only one Super Bowl win,

It would also be curious to know, if Belichick had been coaching in Green Bay all those years and McCarthy in New England, how many superbowls each team would have.

Aaron Rodgers completed 22-of-30 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns in the Steelers’ 34-32, Week 1 win over the Jets.

Rodgers took four sacks and the four touchdowns were a bit fluky — the Steelers went after Brandon Stephens to a lot of success and struggled to run the ball — but this was a fairly competent debut for the 41-year-old in Arthur Smith’s offense. Rodgers did not attempt a target over 20 yards and found a lot of success behind the line of scrimmage with nine completions on nine attempts for 48 yards and a touchdown. The Jets signalcaller is likely on the QB2 line for Week 2’s game against the Seahawks, but this is a promising debut in the sense that Rodgers could be a streaming option in one-quarterback leagues.

This was a huge storyline from Sunday.

Ian O'Connor's feature in the Athletic this morning did a good job with this.

Aaron Rodgers’ takedown of Jets is one of the sweetest victories of his Hall of Fame career

O'Connor talked about former NBA star Tim Thomas and the perspective from the guy told he's no longer wanted.

But more than anything, Thomas was among the rare fans in attendance Sunday who understood exactly what professional athletes feel when they are traded, waived, fired, told they are no longer wanted.

Told they are no longer good enough.

The New York Jets sent that message to Rodgers following a disastrous two-year term. Seven months later, after the future Hall of Famer took the Jets to school with four touchdown passes in a 34-32 Pittsburgh Steelers victory, Thomas had a good read on exactly what Rodgers was feeling.

"Oh no, this s— is big. This is big,” he said. “This is the Super Bowl, his birthday, New Year’s Eve, and having a newborn baby all put together for him. Trust me, it’s definitely deep, deep, deep inside. Aaron is the type of individual that wouldn’t put that out to the media, but this is huge for him.”

So huge that Rodgers couldn’t help but open a public window on his competitive soul. In the lead-up to this revenge match, Rodgers insisted that this was Week 1, and only Week 1.

Never mind that the Jets’ rookie coach, Aaron Glenn, had enraged him by cutting him loose. Never mind that the Jets had been a neon billboard for dysfunction for so many years, and that Rodgers had accepted the challenge of “saving” them.

Never mind that Rodgers had given the Jets everything he had — body and soul — only to be betrayed by the clownish coaching that turned a 10-7 season into a 5-12 season.

Rodgers swore his 21st NFL opener overall and 18th as a starter was no different than any preceding it. He even told ex-teammate Breece Hall before the game that this return wasn’t a big deal because he’d only played 18 games for the Jets. He even opened his post-victory news conference with more of the same messaging and tone.

And then Rodgers couldn’t help himself anymore. He was reminded that his career had been shaped by overcoming doubts and slights going back to high school, when he was offered the same amount of Division I football scholarships that were offered to the average sportswriter who covers him.

“So it was nice to win, especially hearing some of the catcalls out there and the boo-birds,” Rodgers finally allowed. “I’m not sensitive about that. I expected that. I kinda like that.

“But there were probably people in the organization that didn’t think I could play anymore. So it was nice to remind those people that I still can.”

He was talking about Woody Johnson, the owner who had once led a delegation of Jets recruiters assigned to romance Rodgers at his Malibu estate. He was talking about his former NFC North adversary, Glenn, who left Detroit for the big job with the franchise that had drafted him and couldn’t wait to escort Rodgers to the door.

Asked if there was a significance in beating Glenn, Rodgers said, “I was happy to beat everybody associated with the Jets.”

It's such a human story to be rejected and told you're no longer wanted. I think that's a big reason this was such a big story. And such a big game.

And part of what makes the game so appealing to people. It's a game. But it's life stuff.
