QB Anthony Richardson, IND (1 Viewer)

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. worked with the team's first-team offense in practice on Thursday and was "far from flawless," according to James Boyd of The Athletic. Boyd notes that Richardson was 3-for-7 as a passer with an interception during the 11-on-11 portion of practice. The number four overall pick in the 2023 draft, Richardson Sr. has yet to cement himself as the Colts' franchise quarterback and now finds himself in a battle for the QB1 role with Daniel Jones. Richardson Sr. possesses elite fantasy upside due to his rushing ability (635 career rushing yards, 10 touchdowns), but he's struggled mightily as a passer. He completed just 47.7% of his passes in 11 games last season and recorded more interceptions (12) than passing touchdowns (eight). Previous reporting indicated that Richardson Sr. was behind Jones in the QB competition heading into 2025, and it does not seem as though the first few days of Colts training camp have changed that.--Will Brady
I heard that AR was ahead of Jones after Friday's practice FWIW.
All it takes is one practice?
Between AR and DJ there have been 6 opportunities to look like a decent NFL QB. 5 of those opps were missed, and AR had the one positive day. So, yeah, he's in the lead.

For some reason the common thinking has been that AR has to unseat DJ but that's not the situation at all. AR is in the incumbent starter. Lots of questions and doubt about him, but DJ has to unseat him, not the other way around.

I think people's heads got twisted about this when he had the shoulder injury setback. Because if AR missed camp, DJ would be starting most likely. But AR didn't miss any camp. People need to reset themselves and realize that the default here, if both perform equally throughout camp, is AR remains the starter. This is true based upon what is invested in both players. DJ needs to outplay AR to start, and thus far he hasn't.

I agree - and prior to the shoulder issue being reported it seemed like the majority was in agreement on that aspect.

And as I’d mentioned upthread, the Colts are invested in developing ARich. IMO they *want* ARich to win the job. He was the hand-picked QB by this coach.

Danny Dimes hasn’t exactly been an unstoppable force behind center. He fumbles a lot, throws mind-numbing picks, and was pretty well exposed in NY. If he were a franchise QB he’d still be wearing blue & white & Russell Wilson/Jaxon Dart would be in other cities.

If ARich can develop even a little more touch & string together a few good weeks of camp, i think he’s gonna get the gig.

And if that happens I will sell high as quickly as I possibly can before he gets his bell rung again.

As somebody who pushed Richardson hard as a rookie and again last year, I've wisely climbed down from the soapbox. Still, I can't say Richardson isn't intriguing.

I wrote about the Colts' competition in this week's Fantasy Notebook.

For me, the discussion has obviously shifted. While all the abilities that made him as likely to finish as a QB1 (and maybe THE QB1) any given week haven't gone away, zero job security makes it hard to me to chase those physical attributes. But while they're free? I'll be adding shares as my QB3 in best balls.

If IND had any confidence in Richardson, they don’t bring in a QB like Jones. Jones is a seasoned vet who has had a LOT more success as a QB on the field than Richardson - it’s not close right now. This is a true try out for the starting position. If you think otherwise you’re fooling yourself.

And 3 days of TC is absolutely no indicator or which guy is winning.

Flacco was seasoned vet too

This is facts.
As a Colts fan no one wants Richardson to succeed more than me. He has to start showing it this year, because if he doesn’t, the three amigos are gone. Those are the facts. Live by that pick, die by that pick.

I talked about all this on the radio last week, too.

To me that’s yet more impetus for them to want AR to win the job, no?

Colt management is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. If Richardson is not the answer this year, and going forward, Daniel Jones has not shown he can be that guy either. Going all in on a QB is risky business. Fingers crossed he pulls it together enough this season to show he can grow into a legit NFL player.
Not like there hasn't been any discussion on Feel It or F It about this cat.

And it’s a damn sight better than anything Richardson has been able to display to date.
Eh, there have been flashes, but I’ve seen a lot of Jones work - it’s not awesome.

OK, just to be clear I am no fan of Jones. But let’s be more clear. Jones’ worst seasonal completion percentage (his rookie year) was almost 15% points higher than Richardson’s last year. Richardson could have improved by 14% and still would have been the worst in the league. Only one other QB last year had a higher INT ratio than TD ratio - Minshew - and Richardson’s INT ratio was 1.5 point higher than his TD ratio. Richardson couldn’t even complete half of his passes in a league where 60% completions is the Mendoza line to be a starting QB.

Richardson wasn’t just bad. He was epically bad, and with a year’s experience to get better where he remarkably sunk to those levels instead.

Jones may be a very mediocre QB, but he’s several notches above Richardson.

At the moment, probably. But ARich could develop.

You can’t dismiss that possibility entirely. It’s absolutely possible that he can put in the work. He’s dropped 10 lbs, and shows up every day. Not like he came in looking like he’s on the Jamarcus Russell diet plan.

OK, so I’m willing to bet that a guy who could not pass even remotely competently in college will not be able to make enough changes in his horrendous mechanics, D reading ability, accuracy and anticipation to become a capable passer at the NFL level.

There’s a whole lot of muscle memory from a decade before he entered the NFL that has to be stripped out and replaced with new mechanics before he’s ready to start applying the mental agility and synapse response to his game, and if he can get the mechanics engrained into muscle memory - no small task with all the flaws he has and will likely take years - there’s no telling what happens to his passing when he’s so completely different. He’s going to have to be completely remade. If last year’s progress is any indicator, his best bet to stick in the bigs might be to switch positions, or settle to be a short yardage/goal line specialist like Taysom Hill.

well, only time will tell.

one thing is clear. Richardson is running out of time to establish himself as a legit starter. I know his health has also been an issue and has likely hindered his development as a player..... but hes not gonna keep getting mulligans. RGIII had 2 injury prone years after a healthy rookie year and then he was shown the bench.

Dudes gotta step up

Agree with every word.

“Training camp is where Richardson looks the best -- if he's healthy, he's likely to outperform Jones on the practice field,” Graziano writes. “The Colts also have a lot more invested in Richardson, and if it's a close competition, most people I talk to believe that will tilt things in his favor -- at least to start the season.”

"You take it."
"Nah, I don't want it. You take it."
Seems to summarize where Jones and Richardson currently stand.

According to analysis from The Athletic's James Boyd, Jones has failed to separate himself from Richardson as both quarterbacks have struggled. So far in 11-on-11 drills, Jones is 23-of-41 with one touchdown and an interception. For his part, Richardson is 19-of-43 with two touchdowns and an interception. Richardson reportedly outplayed Jones on Friday, but other than that, both have struggled for the bulk of camp.

I’ll say it again: if Daniel Jones is the barrier to a starting job, go ahead and name ARich now.

I’m eager to see what happens when pads come on. Both QBs have a little moxie. These daily reports are agonizing. It’s been like 4 days. Lot of camp left.

Colts have acknowledged from day 1 that ARich was a project.
This reminded me of a QB drafted in the 1st round 34 years ago. To date, Anthony Richardson and Todd Marinovich have each played 2 seasons in the NFL. One of them has a lifetime completion percentage of 50.7%, and the other one is currently at 50.6%.

I also went back 10 years to see if any drafted QB had a lower college completion percentage than Richardson's 54.7%. Out of 119 QB's drafted, he was dead last. That's actually insane, when you consider he was the 4th overall pick.

Last year, Richardson completed 47.7% of his passes. You know who has a lifetime completion percentage of 47.7%? George Blanda, who started playing in the 1940's.

From a fantasy perspective, is there a more high-reward draft pick out there? I just took him in the 18th of my expert draft.
I think he's overrated as a FF QB, and I know he is overrated as an NFL QB. He was talked about in this thread as a top 10 FF QB last year, but even if we just go by fantasy points per game (because we all know his odds of playing an entire season are ZERO), in what format did he finish top 10? He's a RB who can't throw. IND is going to waste another year trying to see if he is the chosen one. This is what happens when top brass isn't willing to admit they drafted a dud.

Not meaning to be hyperbolic or anything but from a mechanical standpoint Anthony Richardson is looking eerily similar in the short/intermediate throws in these training camp clips to someone who's off-season team he's been working with lately...
Not trying to shoot our messenger but it seems like this story of AR working out with Allen or his personal QB coach has taken on Rashee Rice tore his ACL levels.

To be clear here is a description of both events: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM-e46xdcUo

The drumbeat is getting louder.

If Jones held any lead in the QB competition coming off spring and early-summer workouts — Richardson was temporarily shut down from throwing in late May after aggravating his shoulder — it appears to have faded a week into training camp. After sloppy starts from both, Richardson was sharper during the team’s first two padded practices, showing off some improved accuracy on the very throws that he’s struggled with throughout his first two NFL seasons. He finished 9-for-11 during live full-team periods Tuesday, including a handful of touchdowns in red-zone work.

Until tomorrow when we read Jones is clearly processing the offense faster and Richardson is struggling to pick up his reads. Ha ha.

Reading a defense isn't Richardson's problem. Hitting the targets is. If he can show massive improvement in his accuracy, Daniel Jones will hold a clipboard.

Today’s update was even more glowing. Meanwhile Danny Dimes has been pretty meh, reportedly.

All I want for XMas is for ARich to play well enough to net me a future 1st or a semi-elite RB in the one league where I have a share.

Okay, I'll bite. Who has he been working out with? Tom Brady? Aaron Rodgers? Uncle Rico? Patches O'Houlihan?
If you can dodge a wrench you'd know it's Josh Allen

Except AR denies any of it being true.

I did some research and while it was reported earlier this year that Richardson was going to be training with Josh Allen and Chris Hess, those plans apparently did not materialize:

James Boyd
By the way, for those who are curious, I asked #Colts QB Anthony Richardson directly if he trained with Chris Hess and Richardson said he didn’t.

Hess is the biomechanics expert who worked with Josh Allen, but again, Richardson said he did not work with Hess this offseason.

I’ll add that #Colts QB Anthony Richardson also said he didn’t work out with Josh Allen.

(I’m not sure if his plans changed due to his shoulder injury in the spring, but this is what he said.)

This is why earlier when you posted this I mentioned this was like the Rashee Rice injury misinformation. Something like everyone was wrong about.

FWIW I knew early this off-season he did not work out with Allen but swore I saw reports he was working out with Hess. You can sure find a lot of articles and tweets saying such.To the point I'd not believe otherwise if it was coming from anyone other then the horse's mouth.
