Gator fan here and I’ve chimed in on Richardson before, but interesting conversation I had w some gator buddies over the weekend and the gist was: maybe the gator offensive coaching staff didn’t really know what to do w him. we kind of figured a coach like Pete Carroll (and behind geno for a year or two) may be the best place for him.

I think I can see the Combine Effect starting to put pressure on teams already. Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson is a compelling prospect. I saw him Friday making the interview rounds, and he’s huge—6-4, 240. He has the perfect physique for today’s NFL quarterback, and he throws the ball with NFL velocity. He went out and excelled at his Combine workout, with the best-ever vertical jumps and broad jumps for a quarterback here. He ran a 4.43 40-, a speed half the wideouts can’t top. The Fan Duel Sports Book now lists Richardson as the player with the second-best chance to be drafted at the top of the QB class this year, behind Bryce Young. Richardson’s an interesting prospect, to be sure. He could turn out to be a megastar; his tools suggest that’s certainly possible. But let’s recall he won six games as a college quarterback, started for one season, and completed 54.7 percent of his career passes. We do some weird things in the media business, but inflating players because of their Combine performances is the weirdest.

I think Houston really wants Young. Demeco's got the Alabama connection. Caserio has long had a tight relationship via Bill with Saban/Bama. They are trying really hard to bring some juice to the organization and while AR has juice as a player I'm talking about a Heisman trophy winning day one type of starter.

Irsay was the one who made that comment. I'm not sure if he meant it and spoke out of turn or if he thought he was being clever playing the goofball trying to throw people off the scent.

This stuff is intriguing and I think the Bears have a large desire for the Colts to covet the pick more then anyone. What is key for the Colts wanting to pay to move up I think boils down to how much do they prioritize their QB1 over their QB3 or 4. If they feel good about 3 or 4 QB's maybe they just stand pat. If I was a fan of their team it's what I'd rather seem them do instead of forking over next years #1's plus a good amount more.

This is why I think that while the Bears would prefer Indy makes them a good offer for pick 1 I think it's more likely we see a team like the Raiders from the 7 spot or the Panthers from the 9 spot make the move to 1. 1 I think it's more likely we see a team like the Raiders from the 7 spot or the Panthers from the 9 spot make the move to 1. The teams that might feel they are to far to pick for any of the top 4 QB's, if they even have 4 QB's worthy of being top 10 picks.

Their wet dream is if HOU is in love with one of the QBs. Drop to 2, then drop to 4, then drop to 7 if the Raiders are feeling bold. Imagine how much 2023 & 2024 draft capital they could accumulate if they dealt with all 4 of HOU, INDY, LVR, and CAR.

Extremely unlikely, but non-zero chance.

I think he will be all over the place in rookie drafts. Probably anywhere from 1.4-2.4 depending on a variety of factors.

Maybe Pete wants someone to trade up to AZs spot and draft AR after Stroud/Young go 1/2, so he can get a better defensive player at 5 than his division rival gets.

But if i can get 85% of Burrow, that’s probably not too bad for FF either. And likely without Fields not insignificant injury risk to boot.

ETA, Stroud will also arguably be in a better team situation - hard to be in a worse one than the Bears, pending 2023 draft/FA.

People can have any comparison of PLAYER X to PLAYER Y that they want. The reason I brought up Fields and Stroud is my son went to OSU and I watched the huge majority of games for both guys. IMO, Fields was a bigger big play threat both running and passing. He produced chunk yardage. Stroud had better touch on underneath routes and was more of a move the chains kind of a guy. I am offering insight across many games . . . your Stroud / Burrow comparison is somewhat based on recency bias / a limited sample size (ie, how well he did in his last game or two).

Also of note, the OSU / Alabama QBs (and Burrow) all were throwing to first round, impact WRs in college. Burrow ended up on a pro team with 3 top flight WRs. Guys like Fields and Jones did not. Tua these days has two game changing receiver threats in MIA. Talent level in the NFL matters . . . a lot.

I would be hesitant to compare guys in the pros to guys coming out of college. Put Stroud on the Bears, and he would look inaccurate and not a great passer just like FIelds did. Sure, if Stroud ends up throwing to guys like Harrison, JSN, Egbuka, WIlson, and Olave like he did on the Buckeyes, then sure, he could light it up like he did at OSU. Put those guys all on the same NFL team, and that would be the best set of WRs in the league. Guys like Mac Jones had Jeudy, Ruggs, Waddle, Smith, and Metchie to throw to at Alabama. Then he went to the Patriots . . . which was a huge downgrade at the skill positions.

My point being, it's hard to predict which college QBs will translate and adapt to the pro game, and the team around him will make a huge impact on how well each guy will do. Not exactly covering new ground, but it's hard to be a transformational player on an otherwise miserable team (like Fields playing on the Bears).

Can't the same argument be said for Fields? That he helped make Olave and Wilson better, too? He played with them for two years. I generally find the combine and pro days to be very little like actual football. They are drills with no pass rush, not in came conditions, not run with teammates. How often is a QB going to be able to just stand in the pocket and thrown to a receiver 50 yards downfield with no one else on the field? When is a player ever going to engage in the long jump during an actual play?

If there's anything that we can conclude, it's that OSU is an NFL WR factory. In the past few years, they produced Wilson, Olave, Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Michael Thomas, Devin Smith, and Corey Brown. This year they have JSN . . . and they still have Harrison and Egbuka. Other QBs in that era were Dwayne Haskins, J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones, and Braxton Miller.

Maybe they have had some good coaches in Meyer and Day? I think they just have a good pro level program . . . it remains to be seen how impactful any of the QBs will be at the NFL level. They didn't play Burrow . . . which I find interesting. Maybe OSU just has a really good system for developing WRs?

Maybe so. I know after I posted that last message I caught up on my twitter feed, saw mocks from McShay and Brugler and both had the Bears doing a double trade down, both times resulting in teams trading up to the #4 for Richardson.

For me it boils down to do the Colts or Texans have A guy they want or after the combine do they have a group of QB's they are comfortable with over paying a first plus. I came out of the combine thinking the later. We'll see.

Regarding the bolded and Arizona. I actually keep getting annoyed at most mocks I see that just assume the Bears will trade out of 1 because they have their QB(which I agree with, it's going to happen) but rarely do you ever see them make the same assumption with Arizona. I don't get it. Arizona has a ton of needs and a QB in place as well.

100% correct. Thinking Howie will be looking to add more to the 2024 draft in any scenario, but this would be an ultimate spot to be in. The Eagles already have 2 2024 2nd round picks, and with the glut of free agents set to leave, there is a good chance we get 1-3 3rd round comp picks, which could *really* make the 2024 draft capital very very valuable if he is somehow able to add another 1st rounder next year.

I look forward to seeing how his amazing broad jump will help him become a better QB, because what I’ve seen of his 13 games wasn’t anywhere near as impressive as the underwear Olympics.

Everyone knew he was an athletic freak - I don’t believe all of this hype at all.

What is key for the Colts wanting to pay to move up I think boils down to how much do they prioritize their QB1 over their QB3 or 4. If they feel good about 3 or 4 QB's maybe they just stand pat. If I was a fan of their team it's what I'd rather seem them do instead of forking over next years #1's plus a good amount more.

This is all a crap shoot and many times letting the other guy make your decision for you turns out the best. Getting "stuck" with your QB3/4 rather than giving up assets to get your QB1 that may not be any better than your QB3/4 seems like it could go the wrong way.

Teams really struggle with QB evaluations and it seems much of the time the QB's that go 3rd or 4th of the group end up being the better option. It's nice to get your guy but I am not so sure it is always the best way to go.

We don't have all the info these teams do that is driving their decisions but I've always thought it was best for teams to not fall in love with A player. So for me based on the info I have there is no QB in this draft that stands out above the rest so much that if I was Houston or Indy I would pay looking to pay something remotely like next years #1 plus. No way if I was Houston.

True. I also know that if they did stand pat and get Levis it would take two of the other guys to hit in order for there to be second guessing with standing pat. Obviously tier breaks are a thing and if you have a huge gap between the top 3 guys and your 4th guy it's hard to stay but I know it seems like when I get "stuck" with the last guy in a general group many times it has turned out better than getting the guy I preferred.

It's all a crap shoot no matter what info the teams have. Too many QB's have busted as early picks while later picks have flourished to give us any confidence that the NFL teams know how to scout QB's. It makes for interesting discussion though.

The new coach just came from a system that runs a QB engine that's a shadow of AR's physical skill set. If he brings this system with him, he's going to go get the guy that best fits it. Well, the last 3 QBs shows he wants to win now, even if it didn’t work out, but Rivers did make the playoffs. Yes, they want to draft a QB this time, but I think they want a more pro ready QB. Obviously I could be wrong. It will be an exciting draft for sure.

If I were you, and I'm not (in case you, or I, didn't realize it) I would like my team to trade from 4 to 1 to get Stroud. He's got the pedigree, the experience, the size, he's not a project...etc.

Would you prefer the Colts to trade from 4 to 1 to get Stroud or would you rather stay at 4 and end up with Richardson or Levis?

Like everyone I'm intrigued by Richardson but, IMO Stroud is the target and everything else is background noise.
