QB Baker Mayfield, TB (1 Viewer)

Damn this thread got real quiet.
Baker had an awesome game yesterday, easily his best as a pro QB.  I hope he can consistently play well as he and the Browns offense are fun to watch when they are going good.  Amazing what a difference a good head coach can make.

He's had performances like that before. His ability to repeat and do that while under duress? Not so much. He passed his first major test this year and now a bigger one awaits Monday...

Baker Mayfield's yards per attempt and completion rate have spiked on play action passes this season.

The Browns used play action to perfection in their Week 13 drubbing of the Titans. Tennessee defenders continually bit on play action, leaving Cleveland pass catchers wide open. Mayfield has completed 66.1 percent of his play action passes -- 6 percent higher than without play action -- and his ten yards per attempt on play action is 3.9 higher than it is on straight drop backs, per Pro Football Focus. The Browns have used play action at the fifth highest rate through Week 13. Eager to stop the Browns' rushing attack, opposing defenses have been caught off guard in recent weeks. It's paid off beautifully for fantasy managers who have streamed Mayfield.

Baker Mayfield completed 28-of-47 passes for 343 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Browns' 47-42, Week 14 loss to the Ravens Monday night.

This was probably the game of the season to date, with the Ravens and Browns trading second-half punches. Whoever got the ball last was going to win, and it was Lamar Jackson who set Justin Tucker up for the game-winning 55-yard field goal with two seconds left to play. (The Browns took a safety on a multi-lateral final play.) Mayfield now has back-to-back 300-yard passing games after failing to accomplish the feat a single time Weeks 1-12. He also has nine touchdowns over his last three games, and his brutal interception to Tyus Bowser in this one was his first since Week 7. Mayfield is playing his best football of the season ahead of the playoffs. His touchdowns in this one 21- and 22-yard hookups with Rashard Higgins and Kareem Hunt sandwiched around a five-yard rushing score of his own. Mayfield gets a tough Week 15 date with the Browns as a middling QB2.

Baker Mayfield completed 27-of-32 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns' Week 15 win over the Giants.

This was a win that shows how much the Browns organization has improved in recent months. This new front office invested in the offensive line that kept Mayfield clean all night, and the coaching staff called a very manageable game plan that featured a lot of play-action passing. Mayfield was accurate and poised himself, two things he lacked under the previous regime. The Browns are a legit playoff-caliber team with Mayfield under center. Mayfield will be a solid QB2 play against the Jets in Week 16.

Baker Mayfield is fantasy football's third highest scoring quarterback over the past four weeks.

Mayfield is torching opposing secondaries, completing 70.2 percent of his passes over the stretch. He's second in touchdown passes (10), and third in passing yards (1,232) over the past four games, most recently throwing for 297 yards and two scores against the Giants. He's emerged as a plug-and-play QB1 in a Browns offense that seemed intent on being a run-heavy unit in which Mayfield would be nothing more than a conservative game manager. Cleveland's dominant offensive line has kept Mayfield cleaner than almost any signal caller in the league: he's faced pressure on a meager 26.7 percent of his drop backs this season, the fifth lowest rate in the NFL. Mayfield and Jalen Hurts are superb Week 16 streaming options. The Browns play the Jets.

Dude has been on fire the past 4 weeks.  He's a must start against the Jets this week over guys with weak matchups like Cousins (NO) and Ryan (KC), right?  A floor of 250 yards and 2 TDs would seem to be a virtual lock.

Baker Mayifeld completed 28-of-53 passes for 283 yards in the Browns' Week 16 loss to the Jets.

The Browns placed their top four receivers on the COVID-19 list less than 24 hours before kickoff, and they were without their two best offensive linemen in LT Jedrick Wills and RG Wyatt Teller. This game had disaster written all over it. Cleveland's defense was poor overall, and Mayfield was unable to take things over himself with the ground game struggling (18 carries for 45 yards). When he has a great offensive line and coaching staff, Mayfield can make the throws necessary. It's unclear how far he can lead the team when things aren't perfect around him. The Browns must win next week to have a chance at the playoffs.

Baker Mayfield completed 17-of-27 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown in the Browns' 24-22, Week 17 win over the Steelers.

With the narrow victory — the Steelers were a two-point conversion away from tying with 1:23 remaining, and then nearly recovered an onside kick — the Browns clinch their first postseason appearance since the 2002-03 season. Their reward is a rematch with the No. 3 seed Steelers. Considering Pittsburgh was starting Mason Rudolph today and next week's game will be in Pittsburgh, the Browns have a lot of work to do following a listless offensive performance vs. a T.J. Watt-less Week 17 defense. Mayfield enters his first postseason with three total scores in three games since his Week 14 eruption against Baltimore. With the Steelers' run defense elite, he will have to dig deep in the Wild Card Round.

- Rotoworld

Bakery Mayfield was the most accurate deep ball passer in the NFL this season.

Mayfield's adjusted completion rate on throws more than 20 yards downfield was 51.9 percent, according to Pro Football Focus. He attempted 54 deep shots on the season, the 16th most in the league. Deshaun Watson had the second best adjusted completion rate on downfield passes. Mayfield's success on deep passes brought a much-needed element to the Cleveland offense, which began the season as a conservative, run-heavy unit seemingly uninterested in big plays. Nearly 13 percent of Mayfield's throws beyond 20 yards over the season's final six weeks compared to a 10 percent deep throw rate in the season's first six weeks. Mayfield will have to remain aggressive if the Browns are going to upset Pittsburgh in the Wild Card round.

Baker Mayfield completed 21-of-34 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns in Cleveland's 48-37 Wild Card win against the Steelers.

It was the organization's first playoff win since 1995 and first road postseason win in 52 years. Cleveland opened the half with a commanding 35-10 lead, tying the team record for the most points in any half of a playoff game, due to a fumble-six following Mike Pouncey's first (poor) snap from scrimmage and tacking on a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis Landry (5/92/1) and two touchdown scampers from Kareem Hunt. Pittsburgh made it interesting in the third quarter, scoring 13 unanswered to close the gap to a 35-23 deficit, but coach Mike Tomlin cowardly punted the ball back to Cleveland on 4th-and-6 to start the fourth quarter and could only watch as Nick Chubb housed a 40-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield on the Browns' sixth play of the possession. Cleveland's injury-riddled o-line also kept Mayfield clean without a single pressure permitted throughout the game. The Browns will take the night to celebrate this one before returning in the Divisional Round against the Chiefs.

Baker Mayfield completed 23-of-37 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the Browns' 22-17, Divisional Round loss to the Chiefs.

With everything on the line, Mayfield was shaky, especially early. He was not helped by drops, offensive line injuries and awful game management from rookie coach Kevin Stefanski. Although it was not Mayfield's finest hour, he played well enough for the Browns to beat a team that lost Patrick Mahomes for the final 20 minutes. The Browns just could not get out of their own way, especially with 1:42 remaining in the second quarter, where Rashard Higgins fumbled a potential 49-yard touchdown out the back of the end zone. Nothing cost the Browns more than Stefanski's second half game management. 2020 was the best season of 25-year-old Mayfield's pro career, but he still created too little offense on his own. Mayfield needs the run game humming and the play-calling clicking to really elevate his squad. He remains one of the league's very worst quarterbacks when pressured. That's not a trait that usually improves. With Odell Beckham's Browns future in question, Mayfield could have limited weapons as a passer in 2021.

Pay the man. Before the season starts. Odds are slim they can draft a Qb as good or better than him in the next several drafts. Had been trying for 20 years. If he fails it's just another rebuild which we are used to.  Pay now and save Million$. Wait and there goes the cap savings and the rest of the team. Will have to hit on draft picks like no other team. Qb salaries are only going to go up and up and up.

Browns exercised Baker Mayfield's fifth year option.

Fifth-year options are offered to first-round picks before the fourth and final year of their rookie contract, ensuring their base salaries are fully guaranteed. Mayfield is now locked in for the 2022 season. He gave the Browns little choice in the matter after his scorching finish to the 2020 season, throwing 14 touchdowns and a mere two picks over his final eight games as the team made the postseason for the first time since the first George W. Bush administration. Mayfield was fantasy football's No. 8 quarterback over the regular season's final six weeks. Look for the Browns to strike a long-term deal with Mayfield, 26, if his impressive play holds up this fall.

Baker Mayfield's agent said he thinks "something will be done this summer" when talking about an extension for his client.

The Browns picked up Mayfield's fifth-year option this spring. Under first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski, Mayfield bounced back from his disastrous 2019 season, throwing 26 touchdowns while limiting himself to just eight interceptions. He also led the team to its first playoff win in over 20 years. Jack Mills, Mayfield's agent, noted that he couldn't guarantee a deal would get done and that the decision is in Cleveland's hands now. Browns management may be haggling over the specifics of the deal but letting Mayfield walk is out of the question. This is a matter of when the deal gets done, not if it gets done.

The Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot reports negotiations for Baker Mayfield's extension could stretch into the fall.

No "substantial talks" have taken place between the front office and Mayfield's agent yet, likely stretching long-term negotiations well into October. Cabot adds that there's still no urgency from either side to get it done prior to training camp or the regular season because both know "it's going to happen." The 26-year-old is due a relatively affordable $18.858 million on his fifth-year option for 2022, giving the team more than enough time to toss numbers back and forth with Tom Mills, the chief negotiator on the deal. In the meantime, Browns GM Andrew Berry will continue working towards long-term agreements with RB Nick Chubb, G Wyatt Teller, and CB Denzel Ward.

Mayfield is never going to be a top talent.  He's going to be just good enough for the Browns to overspend on his contract for too many years.  Unfortunately this is the case with most teams.

Baker Mayfield completed 19-of-31 passes for 246 yards and one score in Cleveland's 26-6 trouncing of the Bears.

He also scrambled four times for 31 yards — a terrific sign last week's shoulder injury is a thing of the past. Although the box score won't show it, Mayfield admittedly left two touchdowns on the field Sunday, missing Demetric Felton over LB Roquan Smith for a would-be score before overthrowing Harrison Bryant running wide open in the end zone in the second half. Fortunately, Mayfield could afford to get away with those mistakes since Cleveland's front-seven dominated this one with nine sacks and just 47 total yards allowed. Next week's matchup against Minnesota is a juicy one, but Mayfield's involvement in a run-heavy scheme leaves him best deployed as a QB2 for SuperFlex leagues.

Baker Mayfield completed 15-of-33 passes for 155 scoreless yards in the Browns’ 14-7, Week 4 win over the Vikings.

Mayfield entered this one atop the league in yards per attempt (9.8) while completing close to 74% of his passes. But neither quarterback played well Sunday, but Mayfield was better than Kirk Cousins. Mayfield didn’t turn the ball over, and that’s all Cleveland needed, as Kareem Hunt scored the offense’s lone touchdown while the defense shut down the Minnesota offense. Mayfield is miles from fantasy relevance in this run-first, low-volume offense ahead of a Week 5 date with the Chargers.

Baker Mayfield had an adjusted completion rate of 58.6 percent in Week 4 against the Vikings, according to Pro Football Focus.

It's the lowest adjusted completion rate -- the percentage of aimed passes thrown on target -- among any Week 4 starter. Mayfield time and again overthrew his pass catchers against Minnesota, totaling a pathetic 155 yards and no touchdowns against a middling Vikings secondary. Mayfield -- and, consequently, Odell Beckham -- were massive fantasy disappointments in Week 4. Mayfield through four games has the league's seventh lowest adjusted completion rate, just a smidge above Zach Wilson. Mayfield's inability to deliver catchable balls could be a major weekly issue for OBJ.

My $.02 from CLE...   This is unnaturally bad for Baker.  He doesn't miss open throws.  In previous seasons, there's always been a reason for a bad game.  This time there is none.

My guess is that he was taped up or wearing some sort of device that restricted his range of motion due to the previous week's dislocation (of his non-throwing shoulder). I am also willing to speculate that next week we'll be back to the old Baker -- one way or another.

He went from hitting 84% of his passes to under 50% this past week AFTER he dislocated his shoulder.  Doesn't matter what he or Stefanski says, it is the shoulder.

Pete Smith@_PeteSmith_

There are offensive concepts the Browns are not using at all with Mayfield in his current condition that they used quite a bit before he injured his shoulder.

They are calling the offense around his shoulder as much as possible.

Mayfield hurt his shoulder against Houston.

did he re-injure it against Chicago?
Let me guess.  You will try to contort everything into an OBJ take as the reason for Mayfield's struggles going from 84% completion rate to under 50% this past week where he was wildly inaccurate throwing to EVERYONE.  Two of his wildly inaccurate passes to OBJ were OUT OF BOUNDS and Baker's throws were of course OBJ's fault right?

The wild overthrow of Schwartz and Hunt in the end zone were not Baker's fault, it was OBJ.  Oh OK, that makes perfect sense as does you ranting that Baker's decision to keep the ball and run on a crucial 3rd down when Felton was wide-open in the flat two yards beyond the sticks but BAKER decided to run and failing to get the gimme first-down was OBJ's fault.

Everything wrong with Baker is OBJ's fault.

did he re-injure it against Chicago?
does anyone else know the answer to this?  it's entirely possible he got hurt again in the Chicago game, but I don't remember seeing it happen.

he did get sacked five times in that game.

apparently he's been playing with a torn left labrum, and Mayfield admitted to wearing a harness of some sort.

hope they can figure something else out for this Sunday.

NBC Sports Edge:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Browns QB Baker Mayfield suffered a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder in Week 2 against the Texans.

The good news is it's in his non-throwing shoulder. The bad news is that it explains why Mayfield has played so poorly the past two weeks, completing 53.1% of his passes for 6.2 yards per attempt while missing wide open receivers streaking across the field. Mayfield reportedly doesn't need surgery and will continue playing through the ailment, which could be spun as detrimental to the team rather than heroic. Case Keenum will undoubtedly come off the bench if Mayfield continues to struggle.

Baker Mayfield (shoulder) said he'll "absolutely" play in Week 7 against the Broncos.

Mayfield suffered a gruesome left shoulder injury in the Browns' blowout loss to the Cardinals and appeared at his postgame press conference with the injured arm in a sling. He said he dislocated his already-injured left shoulder during the loss to Arizona; he's expected to undergo an MRI on Monday. Mayfield, who has never missed a game as a pro, would seem to be a long shot to suit up for Cleveland's Thursday night game against Denver, positioning Case Keenum as the team's starter. Keenum isn't a massive downgrade for the Browns offense considering Mayfield's poor play over the past few weeks.
