Baker will be the opening day starter in 2022.

Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reports "there’s been a disconnect all season between Mayfield and Kevin Stefanski in terms of playcalling."

Cabot said "there’s a feeling that the Browns haven’t played to Mayfield’s strengths this season, but that’s also been hard because he’s been so banged up." And there are other offensive players who have taken issue with Stefanski's play calling this season, Cabot reports. Mayfield reportedly has not been happy with the team's messaging about his litany of injuries, including a torn labrum in his left shoulder, bruised heel and knee, and a groin injury. Stefanski has said repeatedly downplayed the injuries and said they have not affected the QB's on-field performance. Mayfield's numbers have dropped off dramatically from last year's red-hot second half of the season, when the Browns' passing offense proved efficient with a heavy dose of play action. The team has utilized play action on 26.3 percent of Mayfield's drop backs this season, a slight decrease from 2020. A healthier Mayfield will try to propel his team into the postseason despite the organizational strife. He's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2023.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Baker Mayfield tested positive for COVID-19.

Case Keenum will likely be under center for the Browns in a crucial game against the Raiders. He will be operating the offense without Kevin Stefanski on the sidelines, who also tested positive for Covid Wednesday. Mayfield's positive test comes one day after the Browns placed eight players on the Reserve/COVID list. Keenum will be a minor downgrade for the Browns' receivers. Nick Chubb looks set for one of his biggest workloads of the season.

Speaking Thursday, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed "the plan" is for Baker Mayfield (COVID-19) to return for Saturday's game against the Packers.

Mayfield has yet to officially be activated, but it is a formality since the "10-day rule" will run out before Saturday's contest. It is unclear what kind of supporting cast Mayfield will be returning to, but LT Jedrick Wills and Jarvis Landry are also expected to be activated. Still dealing with absences on both sides of the ball, Mayfield will not be a recommended QB2 against a Packers defense that suppresses the pass.

BAKER MAYFIELD QB, CLEVELAND BROWNS

The Akron Beacon Journal's Marla Ridenour reports the Browns are "likely" to bring in competition for Baker Mayfield in 2022.

Ridenour floated the idea of Aaron Rodgers signing with Cleveland as the final piece to an otherwise solid roster. That, however, seems exceedingly unlikely, especially if Rodgers propels the Packers to the Super Bowl. Mayfield's four-interception performance against Green Bay on Christmas provided Browns brass with "even more minuses on their ledgers when deciding whether to offer Mayfield an extension with his contract expiring after the 2022 season," Ridenour said. Among the notable 2022 free agent QBs: Andy Dalton, Jameis Winston, Cam Newton, and Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Browns could also acquire a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft. Perhaps the Browns could pry Russell Wilson away from the Seahawks as Seattle's Super Bowl window has slammed shut. It's clear Mayfield is not the answer, and the team's window will shut in a hurry if they can't find a serviceable signal caller next season.

Browns OC Alex Van Pelt said Baker Mayfield's shoulder injury has "definitely hindered" him this season.

"It definitely shows. Hopefully next year without the harness you’ll see Baker back to normal with his throwing mechanics. Got a lot of respect for the fact he’s battled through that, we know he’s injured." Mayfield has been playing through a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder since Week 2 and fractured his shoulder on a Week 6 sack by Cardinals DE J.J. Watt. The Browns have downplayed the injury, but it's clear that it's been a factor in Mayfield's regression, who's expected to have surgery after the year. Cleveland has Mayfield signed through 2022 after picking up his fifth-year option but could add competition at quarterback this offseason.

Baker Mayfield completed just 16-of-38 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Browns' 26-14, Week 17 loss to the Steelers Monday night.

A truly horrendous performance from the fourth-year pro who is hoping to get a second contract this offseason. Mayfield has been flat-out bad much of the season and particularly over the last eight weeks or so, and this was one of his worst outings of the year. He started 1-of-10 and couldn't get passes through the line of scrimmage, getting a handful of them batted at the line. Mayfield absorbed nine sacks in total and now has 10 interceptions over his last six games. No quarterback has tossed more interceptions than Mayfield since he entered the league. His two touchdowns in this one were an end-zone fade to David Njoku and a wide-open one-yarder to Harrison Bryant on play-action. Mayfield will close out a forgettable fourth season against the division champion Bengals in Week 18.

Mayfield will the Browns QB next season because no one is going to trade for him and he'll count $19 million against the cap if they release him.    Due to Baker's performance & injuries they won't extend his contract which means he will likely be auditioning for the rest of the league next year.

It should be very interesting to see how this plays out

When I saw the injuries he has been playing thorugh this year it is tough to be too hard on judging him.  So he will probably start next season.

Unless things get much better he will be destined to be a backup QB the rest of his career.  And he would be a great backup on a good team.

Baker Mayfield (labrum surgery) won't play in Week 18 against the Bengals.

Mayfield will undergo surgery immediately and miss the rest of the year. Under contract for one more season and owed a fully guaranteed $18.858 million, Mayfield and the organization will likely enter the offseason at a standstill for an extension unless the 26-year-old shrugs and plays out the rest of his deal knowing he lost all leverage while fighting through injury in 2021, completing 60% of his passes for 7.2 YPA, 17 touchdowns and 13 picks. Case Keenum will start in Week 18 and the postseason if the Browns can squeak their way into the dance.

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reports Baker Mayfield is "likely to be back with the Browns" in 2022 while playing under his fifth-year option.

The Browns didn't extend Mayfield last offseason, leaving them no choice but to let him play out his final year after setting career lows in 2021. There are rumors Cleveland wants to upgrade on Mayfield, who had surgery this month after playing through a torn labrum and fractured shoulder. Mayfield is a 26-year-old with 97 career touchdowns that's one season removed from taking the Browns to the playoffs. Betting against Mayfield would be a risky move in a year with poor quarterback draft and free agent classes. The trade market would be the most realistic avenue for an immediate upgrade but would cost a pretty draft penny.

I’m not picking on you @Faust

I appreciate your work.

just seems like the people putting out “content” are getting lazier all the time.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports Baker Mayfield (shoulder surgery) is expected to be sidelined 4-6 months.

Mayfield will likely miss or be limited for OTAs, but this puts him on track for the start of training camp. The Browns expect Mayfield to make a full recovery and are hoping he returns to his pre-injury form after setting career lows in yards (3,010) and touchdowns (17) while playing through a torn labrum and fractured shoulder. Signed through 2022 after his fifth-year option was picked up, Mayfield is entering a make-or-break season with the Browns.

Funny how OBJ can suddenly play again when he's got an accurate QB. Funny isn't it?

Cleveland is going nowhere with this bozo as QB
Phunny how OBJ needed a triple crown winning #1WR before he did anything, lol.  He's no longer a #1WR who can handle bracketed coverage but thrives in a second banana role with his wide catch radius in short areas.

Hysterical that the moron got paid in Bitcoins, Bwaaa Fricken' Haaaa.  He got paid LESS than a rookie.  The brilliance of OBJ in a nutshell.

Baker's awful. He and Cleveland are a match made in heaven. Terrible QB and a perennial losing franchise.

But hey, at least he's not Brady Quinn, Tim Couch, Brandon Weeden, John Manziel, etc...etc ..etc...

There's been lots of speculation among bloggers regarding Baker's future with the Browns.  IMO, you can call it all click bait and move on to the next article.  Barring preseason injury, he will be the starting QB on opening day 2022.

Of course, the Browns aren’t going to pay him $18 million next season to hold a clipboard.

right. One possibility I read yesterday that makes sense to me is for Cleveland to sign Mariotta to a moderate deal to back him up, but with Baker on a short leash. It’s entirely possible for MM to rejuvenate his career and he’s a decent backup. I assume the same could be said for Trubisky. But both would depend on value.

Browns GM Andrew Berry said, "I don't think there's any reason he [Baker Mayfield] can't rebound."

Berry noted that Mayfield has played at a high level before and the injuries he suffered in 2021 affected his play. Mayfield played through a number of injuries including a torn labrum that would ultimately require surgery. He went under the knife at the end of January and could be sidelined until training camp. Baker threw 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions across 14 starts last year. He frequently made poor decisions and never scored more than twice in a game. If he doesn't turn things around this year, the Browns could look to move on from Mayfield next offseason.

Pro Football Network's Aaron Wilson reports the Browns "have fielded exploratory trade calls" about Baker Mayfield.

Wilson's report comes amid another report that the Browns could swap Mayfield -- along with multiple first rounders -- for Deshaun Watson. An injury-marred 2021 and a dicey relationship with Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski has raised real questions about Mayfield's future with the Browns. Mayfield, guaranteed $18.8 million in 2022, could land with a QB-needy team if the Browns are able to upgrade at quarterback this offseason. Cleveland's offense could look drastically different in 2022 with Amari Cooper in the fold and Mayfield and Jarvis Landry possibly elsewhere.

Baker Mayfield has posted a cryptic message to Browns fans on his Twitter account.

Forgive the gossipy news description, but we weren't sure what else to call Mayfield's multi-paragraph message to the people of Cleveland. "I have given this franchise everything I have," Mayfield said. "That is something I have done at every stage, and at every level. And that will not change wherever I take my next snap. Whatever happens ... I just want to say thank you." Alrighty then. The Browns and Mayfield were basically already in open combat before the team met with Deshaun Watson on Tuesday. Now the breach appears irreparable. Not that Mayfield really possesses anything in the way of leverage coming off his dismal 2021. Nevertheless, stay tuned.

That’s actually factually untrue. You may want to look at actual stats.
We may be arguing nitpicking.  As a Browns fan, I can tell you what I've seen with my own eyes.  He was very accurate.  You are welcome to call me out and point to stats, as well as have the last word here.

Mayfield finished 29th in the league in completion % in 2021.

Mayfield finished 30th in the league in completion % in 2020.

Mayfield finished 31st in the league in completion % in 2019.

Mayfield finished 24th in the league in completion % in 2018.

So when was he factually VERY accurate. The answer is never.

Mayfield is a up and down with his accuracy. He misses throws he should make, and makes some extremely high degree of difficulty throws that few can make. Not saying Mayfield is as good of a QB, but Josh Allen is another guy who has the same issue.

In my opinion, there are 5 tiers of NFL players.

Tier 1: Elite starters

Tier 2: Solid starters

Tier 3: Role players, high-end backups

Tier 4: Middling backups

Tier 5: A Day 3 rookie could replace this person

Baker Mayfield is the very bottom of tier 2 in my opinion.

I’m struggling to figure out what is even happening here… A cryptic a tweet, some interest by the Browns in Deshaun Watson, then all of a sudden people are speculating on where he’s going to play next year?

has the team even said one word about trading him?

Its just so bizarre.
